W
elcome to the Solenborg Villa. Located by St. John’s Denis Bay, the Solenborg villa represents the degree to which one of the world’s most prolific design teams can create a property that integrates with its surroundings. New York-based architectural and interior designers Tony Ingrao and longtime partner Randy Kemper completed Solenborg just a few years ago. Selecting a spot deep within the U.S. Virgin Islands’ protected parklands, the property has been described as “dazzling” for its sophisticated yet refined comfort. Ingrao established his own architectural firm in 1982 and quickly developed a reputation for projects innovatively incorporating light, materials, and texture and considering how the interior relates to its surroundings. A regular on the AD100 list, Ingrao has created private residential properties in the U.S. and Caribbean, as well as in Europe and the Middle East, and has designed homes for Jack Welch, Kim Cattrall, Donnie Deutsch, and Goldie Hawn, in addition to some of the world’s most influential power brokers and real estate moguls. Before the two came up with a plan for Solenborg, Ingrao and Kemper traveled regularly to the Caribbean for two decades and, at one point, remodeled a home on St. John’s south side, an area with a more desert-like climate but not far from the Virgin Islands National Park. However, as they worked on this property, they discovered the beautiful vistas located within the vicinity, and decided to design a personal residence and vacation home by a hillside that opens to a vast seascape. The result was villa consisting of two independent double-level structures, as the U.S. Virgin Islands’ building codes restrict all dwellings to two stories. Together, these parts function separately yet work together. The lower unit, designed for visitors, consists of four bedrooms, plus an elaborate screening room and various lounge chairs. The space’s definitive characteristic is walls of detailed zebra bamboo. The upper portion, also known as the main house, is a bit more elaborate. Ingrao and Kemper designed it to have an 80-foot Great Room on the first floor, along with living, dining, and game areas. Off the Great Room, a deck

The floor above then features a master suite and guest room. But, the two didn’t stop there. The rooftop is essentially another floor, albeit one in the outdoors, for lounging and taking in the surroundings. Here, a hot tub, created with blue-colored glass tiles, makes the space’s centerpiece. Once in and relaxing, you’ll get a stunning view of the nearby waters, where sailboats pass through during the day, and can even see other islands in the distance. But, Solenborg isn’t just about the features. Rather, Ingrao and Kemper had to strategically think about every material going into the villa. Based on the local climate and eco system, certain materials simply weren’t feasible. In fact, Ingrao explained in a previous Architectural Digest interview, their first attempt involved a bit of troubleshooting: “We once put down a bunch of great North African carpets and returned six months later to find that they’d been devoured by insects.” In drawing up a home that wouldn’t deteriorate or seem unreasonable within its surroundings, they considered the climate’s multiple facets that occur throughout the year: intense sun, wind, and rainstorms. In response, Solenborg’s construction consists of mold- and mildew-resistant materials. Local granite and silver travertine make a firm yet harmonious foundation with the hillside. Less typical for the Virgin Islands but still suitable for the climate are Italian sandstone, bamboo, and porcelain wall tile. Along with these, they used durable fabrics and outdoor textiles for most upholstery, with the only exception being decorative pillows made with Fortuny cottons. Along with these aspects, the materials’ hue blends within the nearby park, so Solenborg doesn’t appear as an anomaly. For instance, the villa’s exterior bronze hue intentionally reflects the bark found on St. John’s turpentine trees. The trend, of course, isn’t exclusive to the color. The rest of Solenborg seems to materialize out of the landscape, and that was Ingrao and Kemper’s intention. décor throughout. Visitors notice this attribute immediately when setting foot by the gates, which feature woven bronze stands cased in multicolor glass orbs created by Mexican craftsman Ernesto Cruz, who based them on Claire Falkenstein’s iron-and-glass entrance to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice. Yet, the appreciation for art hardly ends there. Once you get through, the next facet that usually grabs visitors’ attention is a 10foot tall sculpture of an hourglass, with its sand halted midstream. Inside, there’s no shortage of details. The Great Room emphasizes its natural aspect with gnarled wood bases added to the cocktail tables, lounge chairs, and sofas. Silk carpets further fortify its elegant atmosphere, while the two designers added art and artifacts from the
Caribbean, South America, and East Asia throughout. In another space, their approach is a bit more eccentric, with a cactus root dining table and chairs sporting a heart motif. A nearby lounge further revels in similar eclecticism, featuring satinwood columns from Bombay, Danish Art Deco style armchairs, and African tribal sculptures. The master bedroom stands out with more of a classic, lavish design. Here, the designers opted for a wood-centric motif, incorporating woven-rattan doors, a teak desk, and a Japanese freeform sculpture. Yet, as a contrast to this, an eight foot long chandelier, consisting of bronze and dangling glass, hangs from the ceiling. Since its completion, the designers have used it as both a personal property and opened it as a vacation residence for groups. Getting

there, however, proves to be a challenge for those coming in from the U.S. Travelers first need to arrive in nearby St. Thomas, where they then board a helicopter destined for St. John. During that 10-minute journey, you’ll get to take in the stunning view of Charlotte Amalie harbor, as well as the surrounding green hillsides and various surrounding cays. Once you’re there, the on-site manager leads you through a personal tour, letting you get a glimpse of its seven total guest suites, expansive pool decks, the rooftop, home theater, and fully equipped gym with massage facilities. Following this introduction is a cocktail reception and welcome dinner catered by one of St. John’s private chefs.

INSIDE THE HOMES OF KARI WHITMAN Celebrity Interior Designer Kari Whitman, a well-known former model and actress, found her true calling as an interior
designer working with A-list celebrities in Hollywood and royal families in Europe. Now one of the most sought-after interior designers in Hollywood, she’s worked to give character to spaces inside homes belonging to Jessica Alba, Kristen Bell, Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas, Don Johnson, Virginia Madsen, Emilio Estevez, and Don Henley. In the process, many of these properties incorporate eco- and pet-friendly features. Her success in this area translated to her own show on the WE network, titled Designer to the Stars. Founding her eponymous company Kari Whitman Interiors in 1994, she started specializing in high-end residential properties and later including commercial design. Her extensive portfolio has since encompassed condominiums, estates, boutique hotels, and large-scale residential developments. But, for working with A-list clients, Whitman credits Estevez with her start. While she got her first acting role in his 1990 movie Men at Work, it was designing his Malibu home for The Dude Room, which she hosted, that took her career to the next level. “He is a class act and a beautiful person,” she says about the actor. “He trusted and believed in me even when I didn’t believe in myself.” Along with Estevez, Whitman continues to maintain great relationships with her design clients, including other high-profile actors and royals. Likely as a result, the interior designer finds herself traveling all over the world. She manages by maintaining homes in Los Angeles and the Aspen-Boulder region of Colorado, and supplements that with a small office in New York. “My office is a one-stop shop globally,” she says. Because of these three locations, she currently has projects in the works all over the country, including in Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Aspen, and Baltimore. The next stop, career wise, for Whitman is expanding her brand. This approach, so far, has led to multiple product lines: an eco-friendly line of paint and a mixing kit, Wall Make Up;

two lines of lighting designed in collaboration with manufacturers Boyde and Zeev; a line of wallpaper focused on artists, titled A Carpet Alongside Stark Carpets; and an innovative line of tile about to come out through Soli USA. In addition to these design-centric pursuits, she’s combined this passion with her love of dogs to create Greener Pup, a line of ecofriendly dog beds. All profits go toward dog rescue efforts. As some of these product lines have yet to reach stores, Whitman confirmed that a few will launch with the opening of her latest two Baltimore projects, a 41-story, five-star hotel and a 43-story high-end residential building. Both are her first major endeavors with Questar Properties. Design isn’t Whitman’s only passion – she also considers dogs one of the most important things in her life. In one way, she explains, a dog completes the vibe of a space. “Once the home is complete, you can never have the energy of your expression, in my opinion, without the wagging tail of an animal,” she says. “For me, animals give the final touch!” But, on a more personal level, she has a strong relationship with her dog, Hank, rescued from a high-kill shelter in Los Angeles. He touched her in a way no other could, she explains, and now, he’s essentially her sidekick and travel companion, accompanying her on the road. She tells us they take care of each other, and she can’t imagine her life without him. 14 | www.ClienteleLuxury.com
Her love, too, led to starting a nonprofit, Ace of Hearts Dog Rescue. Since its beginning, the organization has saved about 5,000 dogs from death in the Los Angeles shelter system. “It amazes me we are still killing animals and have not fixed this problem!” she tells us. Whitman considers the environment another passion, partially from the influence of her hometown of Boulder. The city, she says, has the best energy and is “hip without being hipster.” However, living there shaped her attitude toward being eco-conscious, and her spaces, as seen below, have a green component. “When doing my interior design, Mother Earth is always one of my main focuses,” she explains. “Being a tree hugger from Boulder, Colorado, I will always be ethical and keep our allegiance for our beautiful environment.” Another aspect shaping her designs? Traveling to other parts of the world, which, Whitman says, she does for inspiration, in addition to her love for art and affinity for the Earth. “If I am going to travel for pleasure, it’s always design motivated,” she says, “As I believe going through Europe is one the best ways for me to experience another culture and the old craftsmanship that is almost non-existent in America today.” The next stop, in this regards, is Croatia. You’d think, with The Honest Company being as successful as it is, Jessica Alba’s home would capture the paradigm minimalist, naturally lit feel of green spaces. Whitman considers the actress one of her most creative clients, and thus, her estate feels like a country cottage given a modern architectural upgrade. The rustic element’s there, emerging through natural wood surfaces and a palette of brown and maroon. Yet, even with its seeming hominess, touches like a carefully selected marble stone or pattern elevate it far above any assumed shabby chic. Certain elements, of course, go far beyond. A dining space, for instance, impresses with a dark finished table and chandelier above: In line with the simplicity but adding a touch of elegance. Similarly, a media room Whitman design is both kid and dog proof and, for Alba’s main craft, built with top-tier entertainment in mind.

This expansive property displays trademarks from Whitman’s other works – namely, prominently placed artwork and angular aspects incorporated throughout, from something as simple as a table’s edge to the lattices covering the wall. Yet, considering the sheer degree of this home, Whitman clearly strives to make every space unique. For instance, one bedroom centers around a butterfly motif, which she added for its sense of freedom – particularly, bringing a facet of nature inside for a more peaceful sleep area – but also for its rock ‘n’ roll character. Many spaces rely on a two-tone color scheme. For instance, in a bathroom designed for the female of the house, a cream shade pervades, accented by red from bronzed aspen leaves. A large metal tub, featuring jets and a steam shower, gleams inside. As an off-shoot of the rock ‘n’ roll character emerging in her spaces, the home’s breakfast room clearly displays a love for fashion – logos from Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, and Chanel are added to one side – and further juxtaposes it with a nature infusion – here, in the form of a horse painted on the opposite wall. Contrasting, felt carpet covers the ceiling, while Whitman added old and new chairs from Milo Baughman. At other points, however, the room is a bit more staid: For instance, gray hues dominate, with a pop of red or white adding variation. A Green, Forward-Thinking Concept at Beijing’s Sunrise Kempinski Hotel W
ith a gradual opening that started in November 2014, the Sunrise Kempinski Hotel in Beijing is one of the company’s largest developments in China, consisting of 14 hotels along the lakeshore and on Yanqi Island, plus a conference center, 14 restaurants and bars, spas, a private marina, and a nine-story pagoda. The hotel itself, located at the foot of the Yan Mountains and not far from attractions like the Mutianyu Great Wall and Qinglong Gorge, features 306 guest rooms and suites spread over 21 floors. In working with 60 designers from across the globe, Chief Designer Zhang Hai Ao and his team from Shanghai Huadu Architect Design Company came up with what’s described as an “oriental sunrise” concept. For one, it symbolizes China’s forward-moving economy, but secondly, it further represents its integration with the surroundings. In the works for two years, the Sunrise Kempinski Hotel materialized as a mixed-structure system incorporating concrete-filled tubular columns connected with steel beams and utilizing a concrete core. The design, additionally, integrates green technology that makes use of the nearby landscape. For instance, a fully glass exterior allows each floor to get 25-percent more light; at the same time, low-E glazing on the glass ensures a comfortable temperature in all spaces. Photovoltaic panels further power the facility.
Tying this and the “Oriental Sunrise” together are the architectural aspects. As the building’s top reflects the sky’s color, the middle turns toward the Yan Mountains, while the bottom mirrors the nearby lake. Aside from the big-picture look, Ao went for a minimal, contemporary approach when designing most guest rooms, and then, opted for a “jewelry box” concept for the ballroom and meeting rooms. Specifically, this 1,850 square meter space, built to accommodate 1,400 individuals, incorporates alternating pieces of metal and wood, resulting in a beveled rippling effect. For smaller events, this space can be divided into three separate ballrooms and is complemented by a pre-function area and 12 other meeting rooms. Rounding out the complex are nine restaurants and bars encompassing Chinese, European, and international cuisine and German beers. Kempinski The Spa takes a similar approach, offering treatments based on the European cycle of the seasons to restore the body’s natural equilibrium. Already, likely because of its proximity to various activities and attractions, the hotel is turning into a travel destination. Scotland’s Crossbasket Castle
Announces Grand Opening as Luxury Hotel Going back centuries, the Crossbacket Castle in Scotland has a fairly
extensive history. Initially constructed in the 15th century, it first served as the dower-house of the Lindsays of Dunrod, and by the 19th century, several families called the property home. By the 1960s, James Little College acquired the building, but roughly 40 years later in 2011 Lanarkshire businessman Steve Timoney and his wife Alison Reid-Timoney purchased the property. Together, they invested over £9 million ($13,138,000 USD) to turn
it into a five-star luxury hotel, which just announced its opening in early May 2016 with a performance from the Scottish Ballet. The Timoney’s goal is to have it as a wedding and corporate event venue, highlighting both the rural and historical aspects. For guests, its nine bedrooms present a modern yet period experience, enhanced by the restored original features. Located not far from Glasgow, Crossbasket Castle will be part of Inverlochy Castle Management’s portfolio.

recently underwent significant renovations. A new name and features, such as an updated convention center and on-site restaurant, will be unveiled during the official grand opening in June. Established in 1974, the hotel property overlooks the Deschutes River in Oregon, giving it a distinctively Northwestern character. $10 million and a skilled team of industry experts essentially overhauled the concept while retaining its strengths. What changed is, the full-service 211-room hotel now includes more modern rooms, world-class amenities, and polished public spaces, plus various ecofriendly features. At a glance, one of Agnes Manganelli’s portraits seems like a simple
image drawn in colored pencil. Yet, with a closer look, a multifaceted picture emerges. One, Manganelli’s strokes have an almostphotographic quality to them, but the vividness – and the absence of black – then illustrates the subject’s character, making it far more intense the longer you study it. Manganelli’s artistic journey started at a young age. At age 8, she received a McCall tracing box, and upon illuminating the image to draw, she realized she could pretty much trace just about anything. That, along with a handful of colored pencils, she learned how layering strokes on top of each other transformed them into different shades. The combination resulted in her discovering she could bring anything to life with colored pencils. Later on, Manganelli earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts at Temple University and then went onto study in Rome. Following, she worked for over 15 years in the New Jersey/New York area as an art director in advertising, and during her time in that role, she won multiple design awards. Now residing in Vero Beach, Florida with her family, she has been devoting her time to “drawing the human spirit” while presenting her work at various events. Essentially going back to her roots, colored pencils remain her tool of preference for their flexibility and portability. Consider the Extraordinary Dining in the Maldives P
art of the Hilton Maldives Resort and Spa on Conrad Rangali Island, Ithaa Undersea Restaurant debuted in 2005 with an exclusive concept. A tunnel, made out of clear acrylic walls, delivers a 270-degree view of the Indian Ocean’s ecosystem, while you dine on Maldivianinfluenced European cuisine. As the world’s first all-glass undersea restaurant, Ithaa means “Mother of Pearl” in the native Maldivian language of Dihevi. Its appearance, however, is somewhat deceiving. To get there, you first need to walk to the end of a jetty, where a thatched pavilion sits. There, you go down a spiral staircase to the restaurant. Inside, the views are rather stunning – you’ll essentially be immersed in a world of fish, turtles, and stingrays – but the space is fairly small. In fact, the tunnel only sits up to 14 people, so reservations months in advance are required.
Now considered one of the most beautiful restaurants in the world, Ithaa’s journey encompasses multiple locations across the globe. Kuala Lumpur National Science Center designed the tunnel itself, which now qualifies as the world’s largest aquarium tunnel. After being completed in Singapore, the tunnel was then transported by barge across the Indian Ocean to the Maldives. Visually, New Zealand’s M.J. Murphy Ltd. designed the sparse, rustic interior. With this scene presented, most might consider the food secondary, but Ithaa puts just as much thought into its menu. With the exception of the fish, ingredients are sourced from all over the world to create dishes that are clearly European in nature but have distinctive Asian and Maldivian characteristics. To dine, Ithaa is open for a six-course dinner with a set menu, a four-course lunch with lighter fare, and mid-morning for cocktails. ■
