nterior designer Mark Weaver has put together a diverse portfolio of projects since he started his eponymous design firm in 1970. One of the most recent is a collaboration with architect O. Douglas Phillip. The project, a home in Santa Barbara right by a creek, draws upon their love of classic architecture and detailing. Along with strong Italian influences, the property incorporates the natural surroundings, such as native Oak and sycamore trees, and borrows elements from the Getty Villa in Malibu and classical buildings. Weaver, who’s designed structures ranging from private aircrafts to installations for Fortune 500 clients, often gives his work a historical touch while working within a clean and modern linear framework. From here, his style adds distinctiveness through dramatic lighting and blends furniture, art, and antiques into the spaces.

A glance at Weaver’s designs reveals a multitude of influences. Italian heritage, from the Romans and other historical points, finds its way in, while Weaver’s own travels further shape the final product. But, most importantly, Weaver makes it his goal to help clients discover their interests and then integrates this aspect, their tastes, and their lifestyle into the surroundings. Throughout all projects, Weaver is involved in every aspect, from the planning stage through construction, the finishing details, and even the landscape, all with the goal of adding cohesiveness to all design elements. Outside of his work, Weaver is a member of the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art and the Decorative Arts Council of LACMA, and is a patron of the Los Angeles Opera.■

Like many of Weaver’s projects, this living room centers around historical Italian accents. Here, Bronze Pompeian oil lamps, copies of those in the Naples Archeological Museum, light the room. “The Getty Museum assisted me in procuring them for my home,” he says. The sofa, a scale wooden reproduction of an Ionian day bed, is also from the Getty archives. Weaver finished the space with his own upholstered furniture and coffee table, an antique rug from Mansour in Los Angeles, and a mirror, from Michael Taylor, Inc., situated above the fireplace.

Many might call this room an exercise in history – specifically, how to add antiques to your space. Weaver designed the custom leather bed, and then gave the space a few signature details: antique 19th century Neopolitan bedside chests, made out of olive wood; antique stone columns from Therien & Co; 19th century Bolognese tapestries; carpeting from Sisal by JD Staron; and framed prints by Canova.

The side yard plays off the home’s classic Italian influences, creating the perfect setting. Using the property’s creek location, along with the native oaks and sycamores, landscaper Robert Truskowski added Italian Cypress, Westringea, French lavender, rosemary, roses, juniper, and native Agave plants. Weaver brings the outdoors into the space. “I wanted to have a focal element as you enter the bathroom,” he says, and as a result, the atrium area centers around a Japanese maple. Barrel-vaulted ceilings in Capri Blue enhance its spacious feeling, and, if you look closely enough, they include a copy of a design from the Naples Archeological Museo. As another luxurious touch, white carrara stone furnishes the bathtub.

MaHouse | Strasbourg, Alsace, France A

t MaHouse, designed by MARC FORNES / THEVERYMANY, the extra length of a step, the degree of each tilt, the obliques in plan and elevation and their corner indentations act as small anomalies to introduce the experiential to one’s daily environment. Of three stacked floors -- parents’ penthouse on top, children’s playground in the middle, ground floor for all -- the middle level is the most jumbled. three levels, providing a continuous spatial experience and copious light without direct views inside. The lines of the house are derivatives of code lines and constraints -- from maxing out the allowable zoning envelope, to the clearance height of each owner’s car in the underground garage. MaHouse is the second project by MARC FORNES/ THEVERYMANY for a French residence, following a staircase in a Parisian apartment designed with Ammar Eloueini.. ■


Where Art and Architecture Merge:

MARC FORNES/THEVERYMANY Studio both art and architecture worlds. A company name ought to precisely describe what it does. As far as the name’s concerned, Fornes explains that, in any system,

Fornes, a trained architect from France, spent time in Stockholm and London before moving to New York in 2006, where he initially worked at Skidmore, Owings and Merrill. The link between science, theory, and art and the ability to change people’s environment in a pragmatic way drew Fornes to the field and essentially shaped THEVERYMANY’s mission. The studio, which blends art and architecture through systemic research and development, began with technology, specifically applying computer science and digital fabrications to create elaborate geometric shapes. While starting with small models, Fornes and his team graduated to physical installations, which garnered interest from

The company’s name reflects this notion and their design process, which, for them, is a collaboration between design and construction. Structures now range from permanent to outside fixtures, both programmed and architectural. One of the most visible, so far, has been the pop-up store for Louis Vuitton and Yayoi Kusama – also known as the first carbon-fiber, self-supporting shelf structure applied to architecture. Fornes continues to move forward with multiple projects. As of late 2015, the company is working on a 120-foot piece to be placed in the largest cruise ship in the world, and a second stage for the Merriweather Post Pavilion’s amphitheater. ■ | 21

Preserving Evidence of An Old Art Form with Russ Hahn taking many art courses in retirement and achieving some success in watercolor painting, he “discovered” an unusual, nearly lost art form called postage stamp collage. Its basis is decoupage, another much older art form practiced in Asia for centuries by pasting pieces of paper, fabric, leaves, butterfly wings, and other fine materials to threedimensional objects. Postage stamp collage is similar, but it’s one dimensional with the intent to create images of people, places, and things for wall decor. Russ’ interest in art began at a young age. After high school and two years in the U.S. Navy, he took a few elective art courses at the University of Rhode Island while he finished his degree in horticulture, with an emphasis in floriculture, in 1957. Following a career in marketing/advertising, he and his wife retired to Vero Beach, Florida in 1994, where he took 24 art courses at the Vero Beach Museum of Art over eight years, starting a kind of second career. Interestingly, Russ’ father, a philatelist from age 10, was also filling his time creating art, albeit of a different kind. More of a “folk artist,” he was cutting up pieces of his many duplicate canceled stamps and pasting them to card stock to create images of animals and flowers. Encouraged by a friend and fellow philatelist who also created beautiful postage collages, he started making his own works. In 1997, Russ decided to send some of his dad’s small collages, which his father sometimes made into greeting cards, to Linn’s Stamp News, which led to an article a few months later. He told his dad he might try someday to combine postage collage with his watercolor art. After his father died the following year, Russ found a shoebox in a closet tied with string with his name on it. It was filled with envelopes and packets of stamps, all sorted by issue and color – a final message of hope from his dad.

Two years later, Russ and his wife Pat took a trip to Germany and the Netherlands. On their return, Russ was looking at a photo he had taken, a windmill at Zaanse Schans, an open-air history museum north of Amsterdam, and then a confluence of factors began to play out. Russ decided it was time to do what he told his dad he might. Using 3000 pieces of duplicate secondary canceled Netherlands postage from his dad’s major collection, he created an image of the windmill and called it “Dutch Treat.” Not including finding and sorting stamps, 100 hours went into the collage. Now, Russ’ collages are a little smaller but just as detailed. To start, his stamp collages involve creating a scene lightly with a pencil on watercolor paper, often working from a photo. Then, he cuts pieces of canceled postage of the right color and shape needed and pastes them to the paper. Typically taking 20 to 30 hours to create even a small collage, the project often becomes tedious and time consuming. Yet, because of their impressiveness, his collages have been exhibited at Vero Beach art shows, the Vero Beach Museum of Art, and the Vero Beach Emerson Center. Not to be confused with modern contemporary collage, postage stamp collage dates back to the invention and production of gluebacked perforated stamps in Great Britain in 1841, and began 50 years before Picasso started the abstract modern art movement with his first collage called “Guitar.” Its inception was no accident. In the mid 1800s, original oil and watercolor paintings were fairly expensive, as were lithograph copies just being introduced, so making colorful pictures out of canceled stamps became an affordable way to create wall décor. In the 1890s, Chinese artists began creating postage stamp collages on postcards to sell to tourists in Hong Kong. In 1912, after the Chinese revolution, the practice grew exponentially, resulting in postcards being mailed all over the world. Other artists took notice,

You might say Russ Hahn has a passion for the esoteric. After


Stamp Packets and the art form took off. Beginning to wonder if there were other artists creating postage stamp collages, Russ began to search art museums and stamp associations for references. He found some art and artists and kept a record, and later came across The American Philatelic Society in Bellfonte, PA, which offered PDFs of an 1898 article in British magazine The Strand and on two postage collage artists. The APS, interested in his research, asked if he’d write an article for them with no compensation. He agreed on the terms they would create an accessible file to document the art, article, and artists. Published December 2012 in two parts, Russ’ 22-page article became the longest-ever feature for American Philatelist. Readers can find a URL to the PDF by googling Russ Hahn, American Philatelist, or visiting Russ’ website, In an effort to let more people know about this old art form and the art made entirely with canceled stamps, Russ created a one-hour PowerPoint presentation in 2015 based on his article and included many additional images. So far, it has been shown three times to appreciative audiences. Russ says he has found only four artists who create postage collages primarily to sell, most over 60 years of age. From his observations, finding stamps and the time required to create the art seems to deter young artists Besides his interest in postage collage art, Russ still occasionally paints a watercolor and has created 24 large paintings in his tropical flower series. In 2009, one of an antique pink rose titled “Botanical Belle” won first place in watercolor at the annual Art By The Sea show in Vero Beach, judged by internationally recognized watercolorist Tom Jones. Both prints and originals in his tropical flower series have been purchased by institutions and homeowners, and in 2013, twelve prints were installed in the Indian River Medical Center, where they remain on display. At Home with Alex Meneses

The successful actress identifies with her character on NBC’s Telenovela, but her passions extend far beyond TV Photographer : JIM JORDAN


lexandra “Alex” Meneses, a veteran of hit comedies like Friends and Everybody Loves Raymond, returns to television, starring with Eva Longoria in NBC’s new hit comedy Telenovela. Although the native Chicagoan still maintains a home in the Windy City, this model-turned-actress’ primary residence is in the hills above Malibu, California, a magnificent home whose design reflects her own colorful personality. Her new series playfully documents the behind-the-scenes drama of a fictional Hispanic television soap opera—called telenovelas, they’re immensely popular with Spanish-speaking viewers around the world—and Meneses plays Isabela Santamaria, an over-the-top diva who is one of the highlights of the show. One of the producers of Telenovela is Meneses’ longtime friend Eva Longoria, whose character of Ana Sofia Calderon has elbowed the past-her-prime Isabela from the starring role. Isabela may be a fictional character, even a bit of a caricature, but there’s a lot of substance to the diva, who is of an age when female characters in telenovelas are usually phased out, just like in mainstream Hollywood. “I was completely retired,” recounts Meneses, explaining she was married and had a young child to care for. But when she got divorced and her daughter began attending school, Meneses started auditioning for parts again. The second audition she attended was for the role of Isabela in Telenovela and she instantly knew her decision to come out of retirement was justified. My immediate reaction was, “I have to play Isabela. She’s strong, she’s sexy and she’s unapologetic.” To a certain extent, Isabela also reflects what Meneses and every other actress experiences in Hollywood: the unpleasant reality that women of a certain age are no longer in demand for leading roles. “When women age in Hollywood, people forget about them, and the roles for them begin to dry up, a problem men in the industry simply don’t have,” reports Meneses, who knows this from personal experience. “The difference between me and Isabela is that I have a real life that I love,” she says, and adds, “Even if I wasn’t acting I’d consider myself incredibly blessed.” Isabela, on the other hand, is not coping with the reality that she’s getting older and that the world around her is changing. While ageism is definitely a serious problem in Hollywood, Meneses is grateful the producers and writers at Telenovela are creating compelling roles for women, including older characters who are legitimately strong and sexy. Because the role of Isabela is so nuanced and has such relevance to contemporary social issues, Meneses considers it the best part she’s ever had the opportunity to play. Previously, she might have identified the role of Stefania Fogagnolo, Brad Garrett’s smoldering Italian girlfriend in Everybody Loves Raymond, as her favorite. The character of

Stefania was not only extremely popular with viewers, but Meneses was nominated for an American Latino Media Arts (ALMA) award for the part. Noting they spent two weeks in Italy shooting, Meneses recalls, “You’re in Rome, eating fantastic food and hanging out with Ray Romano…What’s not to love?” Earlier in life, Meneses lived five years in Europe, include a two-year stint in Italy as a model. Her modeling career, however, began far from the catwalk in Milan. She was working as a makeup artist in Chicago—to pay for acting lessons at the renowned Second City improv group—when an agent approached her and said he wanted to represent her as a model. “At that time, nobody looked like me in the industry…even Cindy Crawford was considered exotic,” says Meneses, who landed a job on her first audition. “I was offered $10,000 for the shoot, so I said, ‘bye-bye makeup!’” When she moved to Los Angeles, Meneses began studying at the prestigious Lee Strasberg Institute and embarked on a prolific acting career. She has also appeared in CSI, CSI Miami, NCIS, Psych, and The Cleveland Show. Feature film credits include Selena, Boyle Heights, Auto Focus, and Ripped, and she has received critical acclaim for stage performances in Chicago and Los Angeles. Meneses also heads the independent production company OOLaLa Productions/LADDS Entertainment, whose projects have included the Sundance Channel hit documentary, Damned to Heaven. Meneses is quick to point out that while the cast in Telenovela portray actors in a Hispanic television program, the humor is universal and she doesn’t even consider it a Latin show. Underscoring the point, she notes that a variety of cultures are represented in the cast and crew. “We’re not trying to be a milkshake,” says Meneses, “but more of a tossed salad” in which cultural identities are celebrated but harmoniously coexist. “I came back into Hollywood as a lucky, lucky girl in a show that’s very diverse,” she insists. In regard to her own cultural identity—her father was born in Mexico City, her mother in the Ukraine—she reports, “I’m 100 percent Mexican and I’m 100 percent Ukrainian, but I’m 150 percent American!” Meneses has been in her current Los Angeles home, a sprawling Mexican hacienda-style estate in the hills above Malibu, for about eight years and is completely passionate about it. “I’m a house freak and love to attend open houses to get ideas for design and furnishings,” reports Meneses, who adds, “When I walked into the foyer of this home, I said, ‘I just have to buy this house!’” After moving in, she installed a dramatic tiered chandelier from Mexico in the foyer, making that three-story entryway feel even grander than the space she initially fell in love with. The home’s previous owner hailed from San Miguel de Allende, a Mexican city famous for its baroque Spanish architecture and artistic sensibilities. Although the terra cotta-colored house is large, with approximately 10,000 square feet of space and generous outdoor terraces that take full advantage of Los Angeles’ enviable climate, Meneses was immediately impressed by its cozy, nurturing qualities. Hidden gardens, multiple tile-clad alcoves and generous dark wood give the home an unexpected intimacy, while fine-textured Venetian plaster complements the original architecture. “The house is colorful, bold, romantic, cozy, and beautiful—kind of like me,” quips Meneses. One might even say it’s a bit like Isabela Santamaria. Her favorite room in the house is the master suite, which features a graceful domed ceiling, handcrafted Fez tiles from Morocco and a spectacular balcony overlooking a broad valley below. Emphasizing the suite’s romantic qualities, Meneses states, “When you stand on that bedroom balcony, you’d never know you were anywhere near Los Angeles. Two guesthouses sit on the lushly landscaped one-acre site, accommodating visiting friends or relatives. As a single mom, the most important part of Meneses’ life is her four-year-old daughter Stella, who is already fluent in Spanish and active in ballet and tap, ice skating and pretty much every physical activity. Mom reports her favorite color is pink and that she definitely has a girly side. “But she’s also a wild animal,” jokes Meneses, who adds, “She hits the ground running at six in the morning and doesn’t stop until nine at night.” Stella is also protective of her quality time with mom, often questioning why she has to work so hard. “During a recent publicity campaign for Telenovela that took me away from home with Eva Longoria and the rest of the cast, Stella scolded me, ‘Mommy, Eva doesn’t control our family!’,” recounts Meneses. The successful actress says she would not discourage her daughter from considering a career in show business, but only when she’s mature enough to appreciate the consequences, knowing it’s a world of constant criticism and rejection. “There’s so much disappointment that I would never recommend it for a kid…You have to be strong, you have to be fierce,” says Meneses. She adds, “It’s tough enough as an adult!” Between her demanding career and her commitment to Stella, Meneses finds time to serve on the Board of Trustees of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles—she has helped raise tens of millions for the institution—and is active with United Hope for Animals, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the Chicago History Museum. The gregarious actress has established the Alexandra Meneses Endowed Scholarship to assist students at her alma mater, Mother McCauley Liberal Arts High School in Chicago. Although the faculty of the Catholic school might not approve of Isabela Santamaria’s unabashed sexiness, they can only hope their young women graduates demonstrate the same commitment to community and family as Alex Meneses. ■
