ny time you picture a trip to the South Pacific, you envision a scene out of a movie: Clear blue waters flanking powdery white sands and swaying palms, all near thatched huts and coral reefs with a colorful array of tropical fish. This vision turns into a reality once you visit The St. Regis Bora Bora Resort, one of the world’s most exclusive and unique resorts positioned optimally in French Polynesia. hat some might describe as the quintessential Miami aesthetic moves indoors at the A Key Biscayne Penthouse – minus everything gaudy associated with the Florida city. Here, an ocean motif takes over – in both subtle and obvious ways – from the twotone wave pattern cascading over the rug to the solid white and blue color scheme given to the furniture. Yet, angles detract from the literalness of it all, while the occasional embellishment, like a detailed bronze frame, stands out intentionally, much like a buoy floating on the sea. ■

hen you want artwork to stand out, don’t overdo the rest of the room. That seems to be the strategy behind David Collins’ project, an Upper East Side condo with 28 developments, in addition to various public and communal areas. At a glance, the starkness and simplicity, of clear angles and a palette of neutral hues, pervade, giving each room an almost utilitarian feel. Yet, in essence, that’s almost the purpose: When two lines intersecting seems significant, a painting or print, then, immediately draws the eye. ■

Where Art and Architecture Merge:
MARC FORNES/THEVERYMANY Studio both art and architecture worlds. A company name ought to precisely describe what it does. As far as the name’s concerned, Fornes explains that, in any system, MARC FORNES/THEVERYMANY, Marc Fornes’ architecture and design studio, hints at the process going into each display. Fornes, a trained architect from France, spent time in Stockholm and London before moving to New York in 2006, where he initially worked at Skidmore, Owings and Merrill. The link between science, theory, and art and the ability to change people’s environment in a pragmatic way drew Fornes to the field and essentially shaped THEVERYMANY’s mission. The studio, which blends art and architecture through systemic research and development, began with technology, specifically applying computer science and digital fabrications to create elaborate geometric shapes. While starting with small models, Fornes and his team graduated to physical installations, which garnered interest from

The company’s name reflects this notion and their design process, which, for them, is a collaboration between design and construction. Structures now range from permanent to outside fixtures, both programmed and architectural. One of the most visible, so far, has been the pop-up store for Louis Vuitton and Yayoi Kusama – also known as the first carbon-fiber, self-supporting shelf structure applied to architecture. Fornes continues to move forward with multiple projects. As of late 2015, the company is working on a 120-foot piece to be placed in the largest cruise ship in the world, and a second stage for the Merriweather Post Pavilion’s amphitheater. ■

ome consider Belize to reside in the crossroads of Central American and Caribbean cultural spheres. On one hand, the architecture and English colonial influence present in the islands pervade this nation, while the farther you go inland, Mayan ruins hint at its ancient history. But, in line with this dichotomy, Belize’s position creates the type of Caribbean vacation atmosphere travelers seek out but without the large resort crowds and touristy atmosphere. Because of these factors, the creators behind Ka’ana just announced Itz’ana, a resort and residential community located on the Placencia peninsula. News started circulating about Itz’ana back in the summer of 2015, as both a vacation destination and the perfect setting for purchasing an investment property. Part resort, the grounds include a central location with a restaurant and bar and give a stunning view of the nearby waters – both the ocean and a lagoon. However, its 39 residences, consisting of various cottages and villas, are available for purchase; from there, the resort will rent out and maintain the properties. These properties, perhaps, are Itz’ana’s strong point. Designed by Roberto de Oliveira Castro, single- and multi-story vacation homes range in size from 1,000 to 5,000 square feet. You’ll feel a sense of openness upon entering one, with its unstructured floor plans, tall windows, and vaulted ceilings. Outdoors, gardens, decks, and plunge pools beckon you to bask in the Caribbean coastal sun and enjoy the view. Interiors display the styling of New Yorkbased designer Samuel Amoia, who strived to bridge a quintessentially Central American character with a modern aesthetic and incorporated traditional materials throughout. Whether you’re looking to purchase or rent, Itz’ana’s community encompasses 21 villas and 18 cottages, all facing either body of water. At Itza’ana’s heart is the Great House, essentially its dining and social center. During the day, you’ll have the opportunity to take
a yoga class on the rooftop deck or utilize its spa. With upscale treatment rooms, in addition to a meditation space and a saltwater pool, the latter utilizes locally sourced botanicals and presents a menu of Mayan-influenced services. With its appearance inspired by colonial estates, the Great House is also home to the Limilia Restaurant. Overlooking the sea, this pop-up dining spot by Chef Mara Jernigan presents innovative seasonal menus, with dishes inspired by cuisine from Belize’s native Garifuna people. Freshness and locally sourced ingredients are particularly important, and whatever you order will include vegetables picked from the resort’s organic garden and seafood caught from nearby waters. Other attractions bring travelers to the Great House. A Hemingway-inspired library makes a perfect spot to wind down with a good book, while, in the evening, the Rum Room is open for cocktails. There, a private sommelier can guide you through a menu of various Latin American and Caribbean rums. But, a significant part – if not the entire reason – for a Caribbean vacation is enjoying the outdoors, and while a jungle and one of the world’s largest reefs aren’t far from Itz’ana, the facility itself presents its own on-thewater activities. At the full-service marina, for instance, the ocean is ripe for fishing, diving, snorkeling, and sailing, while eight slips nearby offer space for ships with up to an eight-foot draft and 65-foot length. Going just a bit farther out, Itz’ana’s Private Island Club gives you a different perspective – one a bit more remote. Schedule it during your vacation for a special getaway, all with the resort’s luxury amenities. As one of Central America’s most anticipated vacation destinations, Itz’ana already has its properties for sale on the market. The resort’s official grand opening will be announced at a later date. ■

Kevyn Wynn Launches Successful Luxury Line of Cocktail Slippers After searching and finding no pair of stylish but comfortable
slippers, Kevyn Wynn, daughter of well-known Las Vegas hotelier Steve Wynn, decided to create her own. Finding she spent more time at home, Wynn sought out a pair of fashionable slippers, a style that would be comfortable yet still elegant, first at area boutiques and then online. Bulky, solely practical, or rugged options were all she managed to come across, so, in response, she reached out to the woman who provided slippers and robes to her family’s hotels with her own designs.
