H i s b o u t i q u e a r c h i t e c t u r a l p r a c t i c e s p e c i a l i s e s i n s u s t a i n a b l e, c o n t e m p o r a r y, r e s i d e n t i a l a n d c o m m e r c i a l p r o j e c t s . M i k e’s c a r e e r h a s s p a n n e d b o t h t h e b u i l d i n g a n d d e s i g n i n d u s t r i e s w i t h s i g n i f i c a n t e x p e r i e n c e b u i l d i n g r e s i d e n t i a l a n d c o m m e r c i a l p r o j e c t s . A d d e d t o t h i s , M i k e’s e x t e n s i v e t e a c h i n g e x p e r i e n c e i n B u i l d i n g Studies and the Diploma of Building Design has provided him with an invaluable depth of knowledge for d e l i v e r i n g c r e a t i v e, d y n a m i c a n d p r a g m a t i c b u i l d i n g d e s i g n o u t c o m e s . M i k e h a s d e s c r i b e d h i s c a r e e r d e v e l o p m e n t a s t a k i n g t h e f o l l o w i n g p a t h: “ M y b u i l d i n g c a r e e r b e g a n i n t h e m i d 1970 s , a n d u n d e r t h e l e a d e r s h i p o f B r i a n D e r e k , m y o r i g i n a l f o r e m a n, I w a s f o r t u n a t e t o l e a r n b y - g o n e c r a f t s m a n s h i p s k i l l s a n d t e c h n i q u e s . I t m i g h t b e c o n t r o v e r s i a l t o s a y, b u t I a m c o n v i n c e d t h a t i t i s quite challenging for some practitioners to comprehend the intricate build pro cess if they have not themselves b e en involve d in building proje cts. E xamples of these building pro ces ses include d i m e n s i o n i n g d r a w i n g s i n s e q u e n c e, a n d d e t e r m i n i n g t h e a c t u a l r o o f p i t c h l i n e w i t h c o n s i d e r a t i o n of ‘birds mouth depth’ and true length of ro of memb ers. P r o m o t e d t o t h e r o l e o f s u p e r v i s o r o f a Tr a i n i n g A p p r e n t i c e s h i p S c h e m e i n t h e m i d 19 8 0 s , I b ecame disillusioned by the vir tually non- existent environmentally conscious practices for the build of new residential homes. This motivate d me to rese arch the ef fe ctivenes s of p as sive solar home principles. I have also enjoyed the oppor tunit y to teach in the Carpentr y and Joiner y and Diploma of B u i l d i n g D e s i g n t e a m s a t TA F E. T h e s e e x p e r i e n c e s h a v e e n a b l e d m e t o t r a n s f e r m y s k i l l s e t t o t h e y o u n g e r g e n e r a t i o n, w h i c h I f i n d r e f r e s h i n g . 5

T h e h o u s e i s l o c a t e d on a nor th- facing ste epl y sloping site with sp e ctacular views of Fre derick H e n r y B a y a n d t h e Ta s m a n Pe n i n s u l a r b e y o n d . T h e b r i e f c a l l e d f o r a s i n g l e storey dwelling with open plan living and flexible ‘ functional’ indoor and o ut d o o r sp a ce s fo r t h e p are nt s an d t h eir t e e n ag e chil dre n. Priva c y was i m p o r t a n t, a s w a s t h e n e e d f o r a l a r g e m u l t i p u r p o s e g a r a g e a n d c a r p o r t. This dramatic home is nestle d into the site and lowere d slightly from the a d j a c e n t r o a d, t h e r e b y c l e v e r l y a d d r e s s i n g l o c a l p l a n n i n g r e g u l a t i o n s a n d providing for a series of sp aces with var ying degrees of enclosure and p r i v a c y. C l e a v e r ’s s i g n a t u r e g e o m e t r i c p l a n h i n g e s a r o u n d t h e n u c l e u s o f t h e k i t c h e n a n d s h a p e s t h e p r o g r a m m a t i c z o n i n g o f t h e h o u s e. O n t h e e a s t e r n sid e are b e dro o ms, b at hro o ms an d re cre atio n sp a ce s fo r t h e t e e n ag e rs, d i r e c t l y a c c e s s e d v i a a g a l l e r y p a s s a g e. Pa r a l l e l t o t h i s p a s s a g e i s a w a t e r f e a t u r e, w h i c h c o n t i n u e s t h r o u g h o u t t h e h o m e a n d i n t o t h e s o u t h e r n c o u r t y a r d . M e a n w h i l e, t h e w e s t e r n s i d e a c c o m m o d a t e s t h e m a i n l i v i n g a r e a s a n d t h e p a r e n t s’ b e d r o o m w i t h i t s e n s u i t e. A c u r v e d J a r r a h d e c k , d e t a i l e d w i t h a f i n e s t a i n l e s s s t e e l r i g g i n g b a l u s t r a d e, s p a n s t h e f r o n t o f the house and unites the sep arate zones. All living sp aces have dire ct acces s to the nor therly asp e ct and to the magnificent views.

T h e e n t r a n c e d r o p s f r o m t h e s t r e e t i n t o t h i s c o u r t y a r d, a n d alre a d y t h e views o ut to t h e b a y can b e s e e n t hro ugh t h e b uil ding. Almost as impressive as those views is the sculptural form of the architecture itself: a soaring triangulated r o o f p l a n e c o n t r a s t i n g a g a i n s t t h e s k y a n d t h e b u i l d i n g’s h o r i z o n t a l i t y. F r o m t h e s t r e e t, t h e w e s t - f a c i n g ‘b o at b ow’ ro of minimises any imp act on the neighb ouring homes while allowing light to p enetrate deep i n t o t h e h o m e’s i n t e r i o r. O n c e i n s i d e, t h e e n t r a n c e b l a d e s l e a d t o a g e n t l y c u r v e d l a n d i n g t h a t f a c e s a c o n c a v e w a l l, w i t h p a s s a g e s l e a d i n g t o t h e t e e n a g e q u a r t e r s o n t h e r i g h t a n d t h e m a i n d i n i n g a n d l i v i n g s p a c e s o n t h e l e f t.
