WELCOME

FROM THE HEADTEACHER Dear Parent/Carer I am delighted that you have shown interest in our vibrant learning community. As Headteacher of Brentside High School I am privileged to lead a team of dedicated staff who are committed to all aspects of your child’s education. The school provides a well ordered, happy learning environment which will secure the highest possible standards of achievement for all, through an appropriate curriculum which prepares our diverse student intake for the responsibilities of adult life. Our school provides an education for 1400 students, 300 of them being in the Sixth Form. Staff create a flourishing environment in which the students can learn. Concern for each individual child is paramount as we seek to develop the unique talents of each student. Brentside High School is a highly successful school, acknowledged by its local community for ensuring that each student reaches his or her full potential.

Your child will benefit greatly from exceptional care, guidance and support, high quality teaching and learning and state of the art resources. I appreciate that choosing a secondary school for your child is one of the most important decisions you will ever have to make. This prospectus will help you make that decision, and seeing the school in action at our Open Evening will allow you to capture the real atmosphere at Brentside, meeting both staff and students. It is also possible to visit the school during a normal working day by simply making an appointment via my PA. We hope this gives you all the information you need to make an informed choice for your child’s future education.

THROUGH THE ARTS AND TECHNOLOGY The arts are very important at Brentside for their role in developing creative minds. We are especially proud of our Visual Arts College status and its impact across the school. Throughout the year we host many arts events such as art exhibitions, drama productions, music concerts and gym and dance displays. Students have also exhibited work and performed in professional arts venues in London and abroad. We pride ourselves on our prestigious arts partnerships with organisations such as the National Portrait Gallery, V&A Museum and Hayward Gallery as well as the BBC and Sky.

This enables us to provide unique, high quality opportunities for our students through workshops, exhibitions and work placements. We also invest heavily in technology as a learning tool and students have access to state of the art computers and equipment in lessons and out of hours for research, e-learning and communication. Our ICT facilities have been identified as amongst the best in London.

LEARNING AND ACHIEVING…

OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM We have a long tradition of providing an enormous range of enrichment activities in all curriculum areas including sports and the arts. Throughout the year there are many extracurricular activities including visits within London and the UK as well as overseas. All students are encouraged to take part in clubs and activities to broaden their learning experience.

Central to our provision outside the classroom is the Learning Resources Centre. Here students can access sophisticated resources to support their learning in lessons and extracurricular studies. The upper floor of the Learning Resources Centre is fully fitted with new computers whilst the ground floor houses a wealth of books and other printed material.

CELEBRATING

SUCCESS

We believe that the most effective way of motivating students is by celebrating and rewarding their successes and achievements. Students regularly take part in achievement assemblies and they draw great joy and pride from each other’s successes. Once a year we have a formal awards evening for all year groups where prizes are presented for attainment and outstanding effort.

IN THE SIXTH FORM Our large and successful Sixth Form offers students the opportunity to extend and improve their academic and vocational qualifications in excellent facilities. Students are encouraged to take on responsibilities and develop their leadership skills by acting as leaders of the school council, peer mentors, heads of house as well as supporting the learning of the younger students in the classroom. Most of them go on to university.

“I CAN GO TO MY TEACHERS AT ANY TIME FOR HELP. THEY WILL GIVE ME SUPPORT AND FURTHER MY KNOWLEDGE ON A RANGE OF THINGS FROM UCAS APPLICATIONS TO POLITICS.” SIXTH FORM STUDENT

A CARING

COMMUNITY Parents, students and inspectors all comment on the high quality pastoral care in the school. On joining, all students are assigned to a tutor group where they are supported by a form tutor and strong pastoral team who give generously of their time to monitor individual progress and maintain regular contact with parents. Welcoming new students is very important to us and we believe that success over time is enhanced by a happy and confident beginning in a new school. We have close links with our feeder schools and all students are visited in their primary school before they join us. They also enjoy a visit to Brentside before starting in September so that they are familiar with many staff and the school environment.

“OUR DAUGHTER IS DOING REALLY WELL ACADEMICALLY. THE SUPPORT THAT STUDENTS RECEIVE IS, QUITE SIMPLY, EXCELLENT.” PARENT OF A YEAR 7 STUDENT
