“ Teaching, learning and pupil progress at Morpeth is outstanding.” OFSTED 2013
WELCOME TO MORPETH Morpeth is a co-educational school in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, for pupils aged 11 to 18. We have been rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted, since 2007. We are proud to reflect our very mixed local community and see the positive relationships between pupils as a real strength. We are equally proud of our buildings and facilities, which include specialist sports, music and arts departments, set within well maintained landscaped grounds. We believe our incremental improvement in exam performance over the past years, is due to the high quality of teaching and support provided by our talented, experienced and committed staff; as well as the hard work of pupils, the support of parents and carers, and our ‘whole-school’ ethos. We value learning both in and outside of the classroom, encouraging high aspirations and working hard to remove any barriers to individual ambitions. This prospectus informs you about the many aspects of Morpeth school. If you decide to send your child to Morpeth, you will become part of a community where we can work together to ensure your child is a happy and successful learner. Jemima Reilly, Headteacher
“ All groups of students make rapid progress whatever their backgrounds – lessons are exciting and stimulate the students’ imaginations.” OFSTED 2013
We have a long tradition of performing extremely well in exams; boys, girls and all ethnic groups achieve highly and pupils of all abilities make excellent progress. To support learning, we provide supervised homework clubs and the school library is open to pupils for reading and research before and after school, as well as lunchtime. We also offer support to pupils of all abilities including oneto-one tuition in literacy and numeracy, and academic mentors to support students with exam preparation, in Key Stages 4 and 5.
The Physical Education department provides a wide range of sports activities. Pupils regularly participate in local and national competitions. We have a long tradition of excellence in table tennis having been national champions in the past and having a team currently ranked second in the country. Our Music department was recently rated ‘School Music Department of the Year’ in the Education Business Awards. Pupils can join numerous instrumental ensemble groups, concert and jazz bands, choirs and PULSE, our afro-reggae drumming group. Free instrumental tuition sessions are offered to all pupils.
“ Music, the performing arts and the school’s international links make a major contribution to the students’ excellent moral and cultural development.” OFSTED 2013
ENRICHMENT All pupils are expected to take part in the wide range of extra-curricular activities on offer. Most recently pupils have travelled to Spain, Greece, France, South Africa, Holland and Germany; and taken part in subject based residential trips, outward bound activities, field trips and revision weekends, in the UK. Visits to universities are arranged for all pupils.
CURRICULUM In 2011 we made significant changes to our curriculum by offering one year GCSE options for pupils in Years 9, 10 and 11, to further personalise learning and support achievement across a broad range of subjects.
PARTNERSHIP Firms A huge proportion of Year 10 and 11 pupils engage in Business Mentoring. Pupils opt to work with employees from a number of key partnership firms in the City of London. For example, Mayer Brown, a leading law firm sponsor a range of activities and opportunities within the Drama curriculum; Investec support us in a number of activities including work experience and specific support in raising aspirations.
“Students are very eager to learn and a striking feature is the way in which they work collaboratively. They know how to support each other and behaviour in lessons and around the school is impeccable.” OFSTED 2013
We prioritise and nurture close relationships between the school and home. We are aware of the need to support our pupils in the widest possible sense, and have our own School Counsellor and School Home Support Worker who are available to work with pupils and families. The school’s website, Twitter feed, and monthly newsletter keep pupils, families and staff informed of activities, achievements and forthcoming events. www.morpethschool.org.uk

“ Morale is high because teachers feel treated as professionals. They do not accept anything but the best from themselves and the students. OFSTED 2013
