Caterham High School Sixth Form

Getting the best from every student

Welcome from Dr Atkins, Headteacher

Highly successful, Caterham High School Sixth Form offers a wide range of AS/A levels along with a growing number of vocational courses in an attractive, purpose built Sixth Form building with facilities and opportunities for all to enjoy. It has often been said that being in the Sixth Form is like being in another school. This is just how it should be, as the methods and approaches used in the Sixth Form reflect the greater ability and maturity of our students.

An Emphasis on Excellence Expectations Caterham High School Sixth Form is friendly and caring with the Head of Sixth Form and personal tutors readily available for advice and encouragement. Within this supportive context our expectations are high and to realise them we encourage self-discipline and self-motivation. Students are expected to abide by our code of conduct which puts emphasis on the respect for student’s own work and that of others. The Sixth Form dress code also requires students to dress smartly in suits. Student progress is monitored by a tracking system.

Facilities The Sixth Form area is large and comfortably furnished, complete with its own classrooms, study area, free access computers, social area, cafeteria and toilets. This facility is suitable for many different uses, including quiet study during lesson time, socialising during breaks and a range of clubs and activities after school. There is a warm and friendly atmosphere which helps new students feel at home very quickly. All Sixth Form students also have access to our sports facilities comprising a swimming pool, fitness centre, gym and all weather pitch.

A Well Rounded Experience Sixth Form Committee This group of elected representatives meets every week to discuss a wide range of affairs: social events, charity fundraising and common room facilities. Many students are given positions of responsibility, as Head Boy and Head Girl, Senior Prefects and Chair of the Sixth Form Committee itself. Be ready to take an active part! We encourage different ideas and views; every opinion is listened to and gives much variety to our Sixth Form community. And more‌ Sixth Formers may also take on responsibilities, such as helping younger children to develop their reading and assisting in particular subject areas. Sixth Form students are also encouraged to take part in the sporting and creative life of the school, whatever courses they are taking. We welcome Sixth Formers to our sports teams, choir, band, orchestra and school productions.

Parental contact Parents are kept fully informed of progress through Parents’ evenings and regular reports sent home. Our tutors, subject teachers and Head of Sixth Form also readily liaise with parents regarding any issues that may arise outside of these times.

Helping you Reach your Potential Sixth Form Tutors As part of our caring ethos, all students are organised into Sixth Form Tutor groups. The tutors meet students daily and are the first and main advisers in both academic and pastoral matters; tracking students’ progress on a monthly basis, tutors may also offer extra support and guidance. Working with the Head of Sixth Form, the tutor also writes the university or employment references. Tutors are also able to give expert advice on such issues as study skills, option choices and careers. In addition there will always be a senior member of staff on hand in the Sixth Form area ready to give help and reassurance.

Preparation for Life after Sixth Form Careers In liaison with the Careers service and our specialist Post 16 adviser a full programme is followed throughout the Sixth Form to incorporate advice and help for Higher Education or careers. During the summer term we operate our own advice day when Universities send experts to help the students with talks on Higher Education choice, writing personal statements, interview techniques and financial arrangements. Within the Sixth Form PSE programme high emphasis is placed on advice for Universities including the Russell Group, Further Education institutions and art colleges.
