Barons coach is looking forward to new league

The Amelia returning lettermen are front row from left, Jon McDonald, Zac Hultz, Kevin Hall, and Tanner Owens, and row two, Tyler Hale, Tyler Scharf, Marc McDonald, Aaron Robinson, and Cameron Wisby. BY RICHARD CRAWFORD Sun staff Amelia High School is entering a new era in the histo-

Conference. Amelia had been a member of the Cardinal Division of the Fort Ancient Valley Conference. Randy Hospelhorn, head

coach of the Barons, is looking forward to the new scene and new atmosphere. “We’re excited about being in the new league. We’re entering with the attitude that anybody can beat anybody on any given night. We’re going to need to step it up and prove ourselves. I don’t know much about the new conference, but I do know we’re going to have to go out right away and prove ourselves.” Hospelhorn pointed out that he believes his squad has “very good senior leadership. We have experience and an improved work ethic.” He cautioned, “We lack more in numbers than I like. I’d really like to have more competition for each position. .. “We’re going to be depending on our seniors quite a bit. We’re continuing to work on developing pride and returning to a winning tradition. . . We’re still a work in progress.” He expects his standouts on offense to be senior quarterback Tanner Owens (6-feet, 1inch, 190-pounds), senior fullback Cameron Wisby (6-1,

At Williamsburg, the football program and the Wildcat alumni, the boosters, and the community are anxiously awaiting a return to the roar. “We’re going to be strong on the offensive line and in the defensive backfield and their better understanding of our goals for the program are going to help make the team stronger this year,” Scott Lefker, co-assistant head football coach along with Trevor Foster, both former Wildcat gridiron all-stars said. “We’ll be inexperienced in the offensive back field though, but they’re getting used to the system,” Lefker said. This marks the second year Lefker and Foster have shared the duties as head coach. They are the first co-head varsity football coaches in Clermont County history. The offense will be building

itself around the performances of senior quarterback Kevin Keeton (6-feet, 170-pounds), his first year as the signal caller, senior guard Billy Hickey (6-3, 260), senior wide receiver Cody Wiedemann (62, 185), junior tight end Anthony Young (6-0, 225), senior tackle Anthony Estle (63, 220), and sophomore center Michael Posey (6-2, 225). The defensive unit will be led by the play of senior cornerback Brandon Boggs (5-8, 160), junior end Matt Richardson (6-3, 190), Posey at linebacker, Young at linebacker, and Wiedemann in the secondary. East Clinton’s Astros and Blanchester’s Wildcats are Lefker’s picks to be the teams to beat in the National Division title chase of the Southern Buckeye Conference. “Hopefully we’re going to be able to compete in every game,” he said. Lefker stated he is “definitely excited” about the program

aimed at increasing community and school spirit, “Return to the Roar.” Said Lefker, “I’m definitely excited. We have a new locker room, the field has been upgraded. We have a new football program.” Foster, too, is excited about the upcoming campaign with school, community, alumni, and boosters emphasis on “Return to the Roar.” He said, “The facilities have a whole new look. The community is excited. From the Batavia viewpoint, defending Southern Buckeye Conference (SBC) National Division champion, the East Clinton Astros are expected to be very tough this season in defense of their crown, and in the overall conference Western Brown’s Broncos should be outstanding. The former head coach at Amelia High School, Ogden believes the addition of the Barons to the Southern Buckeye “will take them a couple of years” to work themselves back into the competition and that the western Clermont countians will find the SBC, in particular, Goshen New Richmond, and Western Brown, as “tougher than people think.”

BY RICHARD CRAWFORD Sun staff Wayne Stacy has returned to his alma mater to become Bethel-Tate High School’s head varsity football coach. During his prep athletic career he was a Southern Buckeye Conference (SBC) all-star on the gridiron and was among conference’s best in touchdowns scored, and total receiving yards combining with quarterbacks Terry McElfresh and Eddie McMahan to be Greater Cincinnati leaders in the aforementioned statistics. He brings to the Fighting Tigers “high expectations. We have a solid group of seniors who expect to win. It’s exciting, too, that our numbers are up to 52 that are out for the team,” he said. Bethel-Tate will be building its offense around “two of our three leading rushers back and experience at quarterback and offensive line, but we have some holes to fill up front (on the offensive line) and we need to have players who will step up and fill those holes.”

In the experienced Bethel backfield will be senior slot back Brian Myers (5-feet, 10inches, 175-pounds) and junior tailback Zach Mullins (6-2, 220). The quarterback will be junior Erik Shinkle (511, 175). They will receive experienced blocking from senior four-year varsity tackle Jordan Reinhart (6-2, 260), senior three-year varsity guard Tanner Wolffram (5-10, 255), and junior tackle David Hammock (6-4, 265). Stacy is looking forward to good defensive performances from senior middle linebacker Izzy Toney (5-8, 185), junior free safety Matt Small (5-10, 130), who intercepted three passes last year, Myers at cornerback, and Hammock at end. “We’ve had back-to-back .500 seasons, but no one is satisfied with just playing five and five. We’re going to play with the expectation to win,”Stacy said. His familiarity with Southern Buckeye Conference and Clermont County high school football leads him to believe that New Richmond’s Lions, Goshen’s Warriors, and Western Brown’s Broncos will be tough in the SBC-American Division and the addition of new conference and division member, Amelia, will make the level of competition even tougher. The Tigers’ head honcho also believes that Clermont Northeastern’s Rockets will be “much improved” and would be very dangerous to be overlooked. the Broncos will need to improve is in time of possession. “Last year, we found ourselves down early before we got into the rythm of the game,” added Dreyer. “We’re working on controlling the time of possession.” The coach also mentioned that numbers were down in the sophomore class, which is an area of concern for the future. In the Southern Buckeye Conference, the Western coach sees Goshen, New Richmond and Amelia competing with his Broncos for the top spot. “It should make for a fun race,” said Dreyer. “Goshen has returning starters. New Richmond has a good program. Amelia is just coming into the league, looking to make a statement. It should come

down to the end and we should be right there.” With the changes in offense, eyes will be on second-year quarterback Matty Corcoran. “We have a talented group of receivers,” said Dreyer. “If Matty plays every game to his potential, we’ll see where it leads.” Assisting Dreyer on the sidelines and in the press box will be Jerry Comello, assistant head coach, linebackers and defensive coordinator, Andrew Brunsman, quarterbacks, Tim Pickerill, offensive line, Rich Cox, defensive line, Jeff Essig, defensive backs and special teams, Jim Lovejoy, defensive backs, Brandon Boehm, receivers, David Laith, offensive line, and Justin Lawson, defensive backs.

Broncos expecting improvement in 2010 By Ritchie Butler The Brown County Press

O D D

The Western Broncos, under second-year coach Evan Dreyer, are expecting to improve upon last year’s 4-6 finish. “We only lost 10 seniors from last year’s team,” said Dreyer. “Our junior varsity was 6-3 and we have several guys returning to varsity play.” The Broncos return seniors Matt Canter, Matty Corcoran, Walker Davis, Justin Dilinger, Brad Jones, Kendal Klinginsmith, Quentin Miller and Brad Rhodes;

juniors Jordan Haggerty, Spencer Howard, Daniel Lewis, Matt Loudwick, Kevin McCoy, Andrew White, Zac Wilson and Nick Woodyard; sophomores Jake Morrison and Gunner Woodyard. New to varsity play this year are seniors Jake Banfil, Jake Bering, Dillon Bowling, Michael Latoof, Gunner Patton, Greg Reed and Tyler Russell; juniors Peyton Bailey, Greg Baker, Collin Bolini, Zaine Clark, Cody Conwell, Ray Derossett, Andrew Elliot, Jake Latham, Tucker Patten, Brian Traylor, Cody Wedmore and Coty Weis; sophomores Brady Brooks,

Tim Cecil, Brad Hinkle, Jake Lawson, Nick Orr, Kaden Piatt, Scotty Ryan, Garrett Taylor and Cooper Thatcher. “Our tempo will be a lot faster,” said Dreyer. “We have five or six good receivers and we must get them in space.” Speed will not only be a factor on offense, but on defense as well. “We’re also playing faster on defense,” added Dreyer. “We have a lot of guys who can run. We must utilize our speed and intelligence all over the field.” Fans will notice a distinct difference in the offensive approach

this year. “I wanted to be a triple-option team when I first got here,” said Dreyer. “But when we looked at now and the future, we realized we needed to change. We revamped our offense to give more guys more opportunities to touch the football now and in the future.” Twenty-eight days after last year’s final contest, the Broncos changed the way they looked at the entire season as well. “We want to start fast and finish strong,” said Dreyer. “This group of guys has worked hard all year. They will show that hard work

pays off. We have a very positive outlook.” Strengths of this year’s squad will lie in numbers and experience, along with the attitude. “We have more options offensively,” said Dreyer. “These guys are really a ‘blue collar’ group and want to win. Their willingness to do the work to win has changed. Our leadership and experience are there. This senior class had some brothers who played on the playoff team. They want to get back to winning ways.” One area of the game in which continued on page 23

There is a lot that is new at Clermont Northeastern High School. New football team, new head coach, and new attitude. Charlie Carpenter is the new head football coach in Owensville. He successfully turned the Amelia High School program into a winner in the late 1970s and went on to more football coaching success at the college and Canadian professional levels. The 1968 Loveland High School graduate has some previous knowledge of the Northeastern gridiron program and record. “I want to win some games and to build the program from there. There will be more interest and more guys coming out for the team with a winning attitude when they believe we can win,” Carpenter said.

The new Rockets have “good senior leadership. We have 15 seniors and that’s a good number for us. Many are three-year varsity seniors. We have good, young kids that will push the seniors. . . But we need more freshmen to come out for the team. We need more numbers.” The offense will be paced by senior wide receiver Jake Hacker (6-feet, 180-pounds), senior guard and tackle Tyler Berkshire (5-10, 200), senior tackle Chad Cummings (5-8, 260), junior running back Aaron Wright (5-10, 185), and sophomore running back Clay Cousino (5-9, 150). There is a three-way battle for the role as quarterback among senior Kenny Thompson (6-2, 170), sophomore Derick Schmidt (6-1, 165), and freshman Nigell Reese (6-0, 170). The defensive standouts are expected to be Hacker at outside linebacker, Berkshire

Carpenter has not had too long to see his charges at work. “It’s hard for me to tell a whole lot yet, but they are all working hard. We’re going out to win one game at a time and to get better each week.” Southern Buckeye Conference American Division all-stars returning Jake Hacker and Tyler Berkshire Southern Buckeye Conference American Division all-stars lost David Brausch, Jake Bieber, and Josh McGowan

BY RICHARD CRAWFORD Sun staff The New Richmond varsity football squad has set its goal to advance its program to greater glory. Head coach

Dan Scholz lost 13 players from his successful Lions of a year ago. He welcomes the return of 15 “committed” seniors. “We’ve got strong senior leadership. They understand

what we need to do this year. We’ll have strength in the (offensive) backfield and the linebackers, safeties, and some defensive linemen. . . “We have an inexperienced offensive line at some positions. We need to replace some key players from last year.” Senior Garrett Myers will lead the offense from his quarterback position handing the ball off to veteran running back Nick Williams, a senior,

and throwing the pigskin to veteran receivers Joey McCabe and Mikes Derkson, both seniors. The defense will build itself around linemen Cody Deller and Marty Mahaffey, both seniors, senior linebacker Austin Ward, junior linebacker Danny Scholz, and junior safety Jake Gundler. Scholz is anxious to prove the talent of his charges and anxious to get started against “a schedule that has increased

Oct. 29 Bethel-Tate (Senior Night) somewhat. We’re playing a few tougher teams looking to improve ourselves and to take our program to the next step and to get better each week.” The Lions’ head mentor expects the defending Southern Buckeye Conference American (SBCA) Division champion Goshen Warriors and Western Brown’s Broncos to be the major obstacles to the Red and Black’s charge to the conference title and that new SBC-A member, Amelia, will also provide “tough” competition. Football Rockets blast off on Aug. 27

The 2010 Fayetteville Rockets. Front row, l-to-r, Quincy Gambrel, Isaac Shelton, Andrew Dowers, Joe Gacek, Austin Caldwell, Anthony Reed, Stephen Pappas, Cody Shaw, Ethan Wolfer, David Watts, Nate Allen, Dalton Ruehlman, Austin Strong, Trevor Koch and Austin Nause. Back row, l-to-r, Jarrod Lindsey, Daniel Metzger, Eric Williams, Bryan Jent, Phil Wagers, David Kranz, Tanner Williams, Kirby Bell, Michael Kranz, Evan Williams, Luke Allen and Joey Burwinkel. Absent from photo were Jacob Laney, Michael Sylvester and Cody Boyer. By Ritchie Butler The Brown County Press The Fayetteville Rockets will be playing their first year of fulltime varsity football this season. The Rockets are also under new leadership in first-year head coach Ben Brisker. “Being a head coach is a big difference,” said Brisker. “this season there is a lot more responsibility with paperwork and keeping things running well.” Brisker is no stranger to the game. He served as defensive coordinator last year at Fayetteville. He has also served as

an assistant coach at Westfall (one year) and Circleville (five years). Brisker, a graduate of Ohio University and Circleville High School, is in his second year as a special education teacher in the Fayetteville Schools. He and his wife, Lori, who is expecting the couple’s first child in November, currently reside in Blanchester. “I am very excited about this being Fayetteville’s first year playing full varsity,” said Brisker. “We have 30 kids in grades 9 through 12 participating.” Back from last year’s squad, which played to a 1-4 record in five varsity contests, are seniors

Bryan Jent, Phil Wagers, Eric Williams, Cody Boyer and Dan Metzger; juniors Tanner Williams, Jarrod Lindsey, Michael Kranz, Dave Kranz, Joey Burwinkel and Luke Allen; sophomores Anthony Reed, Stephen Pappas, Austin Caldwell and Dave Watts. New to varsity play are seniors Michael Sylvester and Kirby Bell; junior Evan Williams; sophomore Joe Gacek; freshman Cody Shaw, Austin Strong, Isaac Shelton, Nate Allen, Andrew Dowers, Dalton Ruehlman, Jacob Laney, Trevor Koch, Austin Naues, Quincy Gambrel and Ethan Wolfer.

Look for the Rockets to run an unbalanced spread on offense, with a balanced run and pass attack. “We have a great offensive line,” said Brisker. “We are looking for big things out of our experienced players. We want to have a 50/50 run/pass balance on offense.” Defensively, the Rockets will feature a 5-2 shade. Fayetteville has an experienced defensive line and the Kranz brothers are back at the linebacker positions. “We are expecting those guys to be leaders,” said Brisker. “We are hoping to get a lot of rest for our players by spot-playing the

sophomores and freshmen. The younger guys will have to be a big part of our special teams.” Last season, Fayetteville played against five varsity teams in Ross Southeastern, Gallatin (Kentucky), Manchester, Fairfield Christian and Lockland. Those five opponents are back on the schedule this year. “We have everybody back from last year, so that should be an advantage,” added Brisker. “We are used to the speed of the varsity game and most of our players have had a taste of football at the varsity level.” The Rockets are flying with some high expectations in their inagural year on the varsity gridiron. “We want to be 9-0 going into the Lockland game,” said Brisker. “They are always a powerhouse in Division VI. We are aware of the playoffs and how they work. We have to get the kids believing that we can do it.” Brisker will be assisted on the sidelines this season by Cory Hanes, offensive coordinator and junior high coach, Harley McCullough, offensive and defensive line coach, and Steve Shaw, junior high assistant. The Rockets will be playing their home games at Goshen High School this season, as their field will not be ready until next year. “We really appreciate Goshen letting us use their facility,” said Brisker. “We want our kids to be motivated and get the Fayetteville community excited. Football can really bring about a community comradery.”

Our goal is to go at least 7-3 by winning at least three in the conference and four non-conference games,” said Shane Elkin beginning his first season at the Eagles’ helm having previously served as a varsity assistant coach for the Red and White. He believes his charges’ strengths include “our defensive line and defensive backs who have proven themselves.” The Red and White will “need to replace three senior linebackers from last year and to improve our offensive line that has not been game-tested yet. We also lack depth.” The power of the Milford offense will be built around senior tailback Nathan Termuhlen (5feet, 11-inches, 195-pounds) who

rushed for 1,200 yards in 2009, senior tailback Shawn Taylor (62, 165), junior fullback Ben Hittner 6-1, 185), senior quarterback Frank Sullivan (6-3, 205), and senior lineman Alex Beurket (6-2, 255) . The toughest defensive gridders are expected to be Taylor at cornerback, senior Ryan Golden (5-9, 170) at safety (also known as the hero position at Milford), and senior Nick Sharp (6-2, 255) on the defensive line. “We want to develop into a competitive program. We want to prove ourselves in the conference,” said Elkin. “We want to prove we can beat our conference opponents. We had a good camp. We’re getting stronger every day.” He believes all of his adversaries in the Buckeye Division of the FAVC will be very competitive and tough. Trojans to benefit from strong leadership

Goshen Warriors Varsity Football Roster Name

The Glen Este returning lettermen are front row from left, John Mikolay, Alex Scardina, Robbie Russell, Seth Wood, Josh Buttrick, and Mike Hogue; row two, Brian Schock, Austin Duncanson, Cody Downs, Michael Kennedy, Keith Blanton, James Mikolay, and Corey Goedde; and row three, Kyle Turner, Matt Jones, Justin Mulloney, Shane Seckman, Todd Davis, Kyle Rettinger, Trey Blank, Tim McBride, Wynton Overcast, Travis Jones, Corey Burris, and Anthony Clark. BY RCHARD CRAWFORD Sun staff Having lost just five lettermen from a year ago, Glen Este head football coach Zak Taylor is understandably enthusiastic about the upcoming campaign. “We have 24 seniors on the team so we definitely are going to have good leadership,” Taylor said. “We’ve got really good skilled kids on both sides of the ball.” If the Trojans have a weakness, Taylor believes it will be that his charges are “a little bit small up front. We’re

going to have some new linemen.” Taylor expects his leaders on offense will be senior running back Austin Duncanson (5-feet, 11-inches, 175pounds), senior running back Collin Pitman (5-9, 225), and senior quarterback Shane Seckman (6-4, 210). Each will be beginning their third year as starters for the varsity. On the defensive side of the football, a quartet is expected to spearhead the Purple and White - Pitman at linebacker, senior Matt Jones (6-2, 185) at outside line-

backer, senior defensive back Corey Goedde (6-1, 155), and senior defensive back Anthony Clark (5-11, 150). “I think we’re going to be improved. We have high expectations to win the league and to make the playoffs,” Taylor said. He predicts the Buckeye Division of the Fort Ancient Valley Conference will be “more balanced than it’s ever been,” but if anyone has just one step ahead of the rest of the conference, it would be Winton Woods’ Warriors and/or Anderson’s Redskins. “The way the league is this

year, if we’re not ready against all five teams on the night we play them we could lose them all and if we’re ready every game we could win them all. It’s going to be that close.” Fort Ancient Valley Conference Buckeye Division all-stars returning Collin Pitman, Austin Duncanson, and Corey Goedde Fort Ancient Valley Conference Buckeye Division all-star lost Dan Shepherd

Milford has a new head coach and new team with an increased emphasis on proving themselves a serious contender and winner in the Fort Ancient Valley Conference Buckeye Division. “We’ll be improved.

Broncos expecting improvement in 2010 By Ritchie Butler The Brown County Press

O D D

The Western Broncos, under second-year coach Evan Dreyer, are expecting to improve upon last year’s 4-6 finish. “We only lost 10 seniors from last year’s team,” said Dreyer. “Our junior varsity was 6-3 and we have several guys returning to varsity play.” The Broncos return seniors Matt Canter, Matty Corcoran, Walker Davis, Justin Dilinger, Brad Jones, Kendal Klinginsmith, Quentin Miller and Brad Rhodes;

juniors Jordan Haggerty, Spencer Howard, Daniel Lewis, Matt Loudwick, Kevin McCoy, Andrew White, Zac Wilson and Nick Woodyard; sophomores Jake Morrison and Gunner Woodyard.

I think the whole project will make the kids work harder and play harder.” Southern Buckeye Conference National Division all-stars returning Billy Hickey and Cody Wiedemann Southern Buckeye Conference National Division all-stars lost Marcus Barber and Caleb Morgan
