Sun Group NEWSPAPERS

November in the Garden BY Faye Mahaffey Master Gardner Volunteer

Last week’s article about the Baldcypress tree made me wish for a special program for my computer. A program highlighting a glaringly inaccurate fact with a caption reading: “Do you really mean this?” would be very handy. As I shared information about the Ohio Tree Champion’s biggest Baldcypress I accidentally quoted the trunk’s circumference as 212 feet instead of…you guessed it…inches! Hopefully you glossed over the word as quickly as I did when proofreading twice before hitting “send”. The past week’s mild weather encouraged me to finish up a few items on my “to do” list. I mowed the lawn one last time to shred the last of the leaves, tidied up the potting shed, pulled the leaves up around my leaf lettuce, and put away the watering cans. What’s left? Cleaning and sharpening the garden tools! As I cut down Honeysuckle these past weeks I made a few fun discoveries. A very slow moving Rustic Sphinx Moth caterpillar and a bizarre looking fungus called Dead Man’s Fingers (Xylaria polymorpha). The OSUE Bulletin 942, Mushrooms and Macrofungi of Ohio and the Midwestern States, was instrumental in identifying this fungus that gets its nutrients from buried wood. Our wood pile also has a spectacular display of Turkey Tails (Trametes versicolor). A few of my hedge apples seemed to have been broken apart by some animal. That led me to a search on the internet to see just what animals would eat a hedge apple. There were some pretty funny entries such as, “A deer would rather eat the

post on your mailbox then chew on a hedge apple”. It seems that only squirrels will tear the hedge apples apart to dine on the seeds. After picking up a piece of a hedge apple and giving it the “sniff test”, I was surprised at the pleasant fragrance! The Osage orange is commonly used as a tree row windbreak in prairie states, which gives it one of its colloquial names, “hedge apple”. It was one of the primary trees used in President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s “Great Plains Shelterbelt” WPA project, which was launched in 1934 as an ambitious plan to modify weather and prevent soil erosion in the Great Plains states, and by 1942 resulted in the planting of 30,233 shelterbelts containing 220 million trees that stretched for 18,600 miles! The sharpthorned trees were also

planted as cattle-deterring hedges before the introduction of barbed wire and afterwards became an important source of fence posts. The heavy, closegrained yellow-orange wood is very dense and is prized for tool handles, fence posts, and other applications requiring a strong dimensionally stable wood that withstands rot. What are your favorite trees? We have a huge Gingko tree in our local cemetery and the yellow fall color this year was gorgeous! Don’t forget to email your gardening questions to Brown County Master Gardener volunteer, Mike Hannah, at mhannah2@msn.com. The catalogs are piling up and I need to get started on my Christmas “wish” list! How about you?

The Brown County Democrats are planning their annual Thanksgiving/ Christmas party on Friday, December 6 with the event taking place at the regular meeting place, the dining

hall of the Brown County Senior Center, 505 North Main Street in Georgetown. The doors will open at 6p.m., with the dinner buffet being ready at 7 p.m. The meat course, place

settings, and drinks will be provided by the Club and the Central Committee. Guests are asked to bring a casserole, dessert or salad to share with about eight others. All are welcome.
