l’Introduction La galerie Backslash est fière d’annoncer la première exposition personnelle en France de l’artiste autrichien Clemens Wolf. Fasciné par les ruines ou les sites en construction, mais également par l’idée de frontière, il crée une distance opti que entre le spectateur et le sujet. Ses œuvres trouvent leur expression par le biais de la peinture, l’installation ou la sculpture, toujours avec une forte notion de monumentalité doublée d’une large réflexion sur la perspective. Les œuvres créées pour l’exposition proposent un parcours autour des dernières étapes de ses recherches, notamment avec la résine et le carton. L’ensemble reste fortement imprégné et marqué par son univers si caractéristique. Les œuvres picturales de Clemens Wolf ont pour base le pochoir. L’artiste en réalise de tailles différentes, parfois immenses, puis vient poser les matières pigmentées, comme la peinture à l’huile, sur les supports que propose son travail, de la toile au papier. La difficulté majeure réside dans la découpe de ces pochoirs, par endroits si fins et si fragiles. Les différentes strates de couleurs passées les unes après les autres confèrent parfois un côté vaporeux, comme dans un songe ou un lointain souvenir. Les monochromies des œuvres de Clemens Wolf exacerbent cette impression nébuleuse mais égale ment une plasticité parfois proche de l’abstraction. Si l’on se rapproche et prend le temps d’observer lentement, il ne s’agit plus de monochromes. Chacun doit
s’attarder sur l’œuvre et en dénicher les moindres détails, de formes ou de cou leurs. Les œuvres sur carton trempé dans la résine notamment, laissent volon tairement apparaître quelques traces de réalisation afin d’aiguiller le spectateur. Le plasticien converge tous ces éléments vers une dématérialisation de l’image et procure à cette dernière une forme d’intemporalité déjà fortement exprimée par les tons choisis. Outre son travail prédominant de peinture et d’œuvres sur papier, Clemens Wolf privilégie les matériaux de construction exigeants, tels que le béton et le métal, notamment à travers des installations dans l’espace public. Certaines sculptures proposent une relecture du thème favori de l’artiste, la frontière. Le titre de l’exposition y fait fortement référence, “de l’autre côté de l’arc-en-ciel”, ce que l’on aimerait voir mais qui n’est pas att eignable physiquement. L’ensemble reste donc concentré autour de l’abstrait, du vague. Ce titre met également en oppo sition les couleurs vives de l’arc-en-ciel et son versant qui pourrait être moins chatoyant, plus sombre, imperceptible. Le travail de Clemens Wolf a été récom pensé par plusieurs prix en Autriche et a été exposé dans de nombreux pays, notamment l’Allemagne, la Chine, Israël ou encore les Etats-Unis. Ses œuvres font partie de nombreuses collections publiques autrichiennes, dont celle du prestigieux Musée Essl de Vienne.
Introduction Backslash is delighted to announce Austrian artist Clemens Wolf ’s first solo exhibition in France. Fascinated by ruins and building sites, as well as the concept of the boundary, he creates an optical distance between viewer and subject. His works take on different forms, en compassing paintings, installations and sculptures, but share the same powerful notion of monumentality combined with an in-depth reflection on perspective. The pieces created for the exhibition invite the viewer on a journey through the final stages of Wolf ’s explorations, including his use of resin and cardboard. The resulting whole remains strongly imbued with and marked by his highly characteristic universe. Clemens Wolf ’s visual works are based on stencils. The artist produces different sized stencils, some of them huge, then applies pigmented materials such as oil paint to the media he uses for his work, from canvas to paper. One of the main difficulties of this technique lies in cut ting out the stencils, which are incredibly fine and fragile in places. The different layers of colours applied one after the other at times produce an ethereal effect, as in a dream or a distant memory. The monochromaticity of Wolf ’s works heightens this impression of nebulous ness, as well as underlining a plasticity that sometimes borders on abstraction. Anyone who gets close to them and takes the time for leisurely observation will see them lose their monochromatic nature. The works demand that viewers
linger and discover every tiny detail in the shapes and colours. The works on cardboard dipped in resin, in particular, intentionally retain a few traces of the execution process to help to guide the viewer. Wolf brings all these elements into play in an attempt to dematerialise the image, which thus takes on a form of immateriality already powerfully expressed by the tones the artist has chosen. In addition to his focus on painting and paper-based pieces, Wolf likes to use challenging building materials, such as concrete and metal, especially for his public installations. A number of his sculptures offer a new interpretation of the artist’s favourite theme: the boundary. The exhibition’s name, The Other Side of the Rainbow, refers clearly to this theme, evoking those things we would like to see but cannot physically attain. The work as a whole thus remains centred on the abstract and the vague. The title also creates a contrast between the bright colours of the rainbow and the colours on the other side, which could well be darker and imperceptible, lacking the same sparkle. Clemens Wolf ’s work has been recognised with several prizes in Austria and exhibited in a variety of countries, including Germany, China, Israel and the USA. His pieces feature in numerous Austrian public collections, including at the prestigious Essl Museum in Vienna.
