Energy Performance

Energy Performance (EP) units are built to meet or exceed strict energy requirements. Insulating values are nearly twice that which is currently required by ENERGY STARÂŽ. Plus, they exceed 2010 ENERGY STAR criteria for most climate zones in the U.S. and Canada. Casements, awnings, studio, transom, radius, geometric and sliding patio doors are available as Energy Performance units. A triple pane glazing system helps these products achieve a remarkable energy performance rating of R5 for windows and over an R4 for sliding patio doors. Windquest EP units allow for a maximum air infiltration of only .01 cubic feet per minute, which is 30 times better than the industry standard.

Kolbe’s standard LoE2 coating reduces energy transfer through the insulating glass unit. The performance of LoE2 glass is achieved through a sputter-coating process. The coating achieves one of the highest levels of energy performance possible. This process is also environmentally sound and creates no emissions or residues. In summer, LoE2 glass allows visible sunlight in while blocking 96% of the sun’s infrared heat energy, while in winter, LoE2 glass reflects roomside heat back into the room. The result is significant savings in heating and cooling costs throughout the year. Kolbe’s standard LoE2 glass also selectively filters out 86% of the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays, which provides protection against the fading of furniture, fabrics and carpeting.

T h e r m o - E d g e S pa c e r Kolbe’s standard glass is complemented by a state-of-the-art, stainless steel spacer bar system on most units. These Thermo-Edge units achieve low heat conductance throughout the edge seal design. The primary seal of the dual-seal construction is compressed polyisobutylene, while the secondary seal is silicone. In addition, desiccants are enclosed within the stainless steel spacer to absorb moisture and the spacer corners are bent to be air/gas tight. This improves the overall U-factor of the window and can reduce the potential for condensation by increasing the roomside glass temperature at the frame/glass interface. Thermo-Edge stainless steel spacers are one of the many quality details that define Kolbe windows and doors. Surface #3 Stainless Steel Desiccant Spacer Fill

NOTE: Tested units include argon. The laminate has 1/4" inner pane. Based on Lawrence Berkeley Lab (LBL) Window 5.2 © 2003 analysis for classical UV transmission data.

L o E 2 -240 A tinted glass recommended for warm climates that achieves solar control over a wide range of the spectrum, while also helping to reduce glare. L o E 3 -366 Recommended for all climates, with maximum protection against heat loss and UV damage. ThermaPlus LoE Helps to meet the strictest energy requirements; provides protection against heat loss and UV damage. Available on HP units only. N e at ® Neat harnesses the sun’s UV rays to loosen dirt so water can rinse it away, leaving windows virtually spotless. A special sputter-coating process makes the glass ultra smooth, so the water “sheets off” more readily than it would on uncoated glass, allowing you to spend less time cleaning. Argon Gas To further boost energy efficiency, Kolbe’s standard glass is filled with argon gas. This naturally existing gas is colorless, odorless, non-toxic, non-corrosive and non-flammable. Its thermal conductivity is 30% lower than that of air. Together, the LoE2 coating and argon gas result in a 51% improvement in U-factors and a 104% improvement in R-values as compared to air-filled insulating glass without LoE2. What’s more, because units with argon are assembled in vacuum chambers, they do not require unsightly plugs in the spacer bars. To maintain the integrity of the product, units to be installed in or shipped through high altitude areas may not include argon gas.

Divided Lite Options Expand the character of your home or project by adding one of our divided lite options to your windows and doors. Choose anything from a traditional, colonial-style pattern to a unique, custom design to accentuate the overall appearance of your project. Windquest units are offered with two types of divided lites: performance divided lites and grilles-in-the-airspace. Divided lite cross section drawings can be found on page 69.

P e r f o r m a n c e D i v i d e d L i t e s ( PDL ) Kolbe’s performance divided lite (PDL) glazing system gives the appearance of true divided lites without sacrificing energy efficiency. Bars are adhered to both the interior and exterior of a single lite of insulating glass. Aesthetically pleasing spacer bars* are installed within the insulating glass unit. Together, these bars create the illusion of true divided lites. PDL bars are available in 7/8", 1-1/8", 1-3/4" or 2-1/4" bar widths. The exterior finish of the PDL bars will match the exterior finish on the unit. * Triple pane insulating glass has two spacer bars, one in each airspace. Spacer bars are not available for Windquest EP doors.

G r i l l e s - i n - t h e - A i r s pa c e ( GIA ) Grilles-in-the-airspace are constructed with aluminum bars sealed between two panes of insulating glass, offering the look of divided lites while reducing cleaning time. Choose from standard 3/4" contoured grilles, 5/8" flat grilles and narrow brass pencil bars. Bi-colored grilles are also available in numerous interior/exterior color combinations.

Photographs above show divided lites in an insulating clear glass unit, as used in Windquest HP units.

Clear Opening Dimensions

DEFINITIONS OF ACCEPTABLE EMERGENCY ESCAPE & RESCUE OPENINGS: “Egress” has long been the term used to describe the clear opening dimensions of a window or door necessary to enter or exit a building in case of an emergency. With the release of the International Building Code (IBC) and International Residential Code (IRC), “egress” is no longer the appropriate term.

E n e r g y P e r f o r m a n c e D ata Energy Star ® – U n i t e d S tat e s

E nergy P erformance T erminology

Energy Star is a governmentregulated program that was created by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), to help consumers quickly and easily identify energy saving products. The Energy Star program uses energy values obtained by window and door manufacturers through the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) program. NFRC ratings are based on the energy performance of the total window or door – both glass and frame.

➢ U-Factor refers to a measure of heat transfer through the window or door unit. A lower U-factor means less heat escapes during winter weather, thus reducing heating costs in cold climates. ➢ Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) is a measure of how much solar energy is passing through the unit’s glass. The lower a window or door unit’s SHGC, the less solar heat is transmitted into a room, thus allowing for lower cooling bills in hot climates. ➢ Visible Transmittance (VT) is a measure of the portion of visible light that passes through a window or door. The higher a window or door unit’s VT Total, the more visible light is transmitted into a room. This value is influenced by both the glass selection and by the ratio of glazing and frame area.

The Energy Star program for the United States divides the nation into four separate climate zones – Northern, North-Central, South-Central, and Southern.

➢C ondensation Resistance (CR) measures the ability to resist the formation of condensation on the interior surface of that product. The higher the CR rating, the better that product is at resisting condensation formation. While this rating cannot predict condensation, it can provide a credible method of comparing the potential of various products for condensation formation.

The performance criteria that needs to be met in order to be Energy Star compliant in a specific climate zone (effective January 4, 2010) is shown in the charts provided below.

E n e r g y P e r f o r m a n c e D ata Energy Star ® – C a n a d a Products may comply for Canada’s Energy Star program based on two compliance paths: either their U-factor total, or their Energy Rating (ER). The Energy Rating is based on a product’s overall performance based on three criteria: (1) solar heat gain, (2) heat loss through the frame, spacer and glass, and (3) air leakage loss. The higher the ER number, the better the product’s thermal performance.
