BOOKS FOR LIVING 2019

‘When we were at school, we were told that disruptive behaviour was a bad thing. Instead, like Confucius, one had to aim for harmony. But now, everywhere I go, I hear about how entrepreneurs are planning to disrupt various industries. Disruption, it seems, is cool.’ Tom Hodgkinson, The Guardian. Amazon’s entry into the UK book market in 1998 disrupted the bookselling industry. The advent of e:books and apps was meant to disrupt the print industry, so that no one need own anything so cumbersome as a book again. ‘Books are dead!’ cried the Financial Times. That was over twenty years ago. As one of the first industries along with music to be ‘disrupted’ why are there more bookshops opening and book sales rising 5% each year since 2015? Could it be that after this length of time, that both ‘new’ and ‘old’ media have settled down together and simply broadened the offer to the end consumer a.k.a the book-buyer? That both print and digital, both bookshop and online retailer offer specific and equally valuable services? What may have been forgotten in the stampede to disrupt everything, is that technology today has only provided efficiencies in the supply chain and content platform. Until a robot can write War & Peace or come up with the complexities of a Lord of the Rings – and there are lots of people who think they will – a human still has to sit down, and think up stuff to ‘feed the omnichannel. ‘ At Clearview we are, as always, lucky enough to work with people who do. Our 2019 list contains some total gems, and we hope you enjoy looking at them and finding your way into a bookshop or onto Amazon to order a copy. Catharine Snow, Simonne Waud & Rosanna Dickinson. ‘Evergreen: a plant that retains green leaves throughout the year’. Scandinavian chef, Mikkel Karstad, casts his unique vision over vegetarian cooking, setting the bar for what is a hugely popular subject - ever higher. His mission is to show us how to eat green throughout the year, spending the time out of doors and in season, to understand how vegetables change in shape and taste according to the time of year. Chapters are built around specific vegetables including peas, Jerusalem artichokes and beetroot, interspersed with foraging trips to the forests, islands and green fields of the author’s native Denmark. As the seasons move on and new vegetables are ready to harvest, the daylight changes as the long, bright summer evenings become clear autumn days and then the first frosts of winter. The tranquillity and simplicity of a life lived closed to nature has been perfectly captured by Schønnemann’s images. Former consultant at NOMA restauraunt, Mikkel Karstad has worked for Gordon Ramsay, Pierre Koffmann and Claus Meyer. He now cooks and styles full time..

J O H AMBRO

A polaroid is the physical and organic reminder of a particular moment, enabling the creative team to step back and fully consider the technical and artistic direction of a photoshoot. The excitement of watching a polaroid as it slowly develops is what makes it not just a tangible record, but with our current immersion in the digital world, a tiny artwork all by itself.

Nancy Astor and Nancy Lancaster were brought up at Mirador, the Langhorne family house in Virginia, which was known for its superb food. The recent discovery of the original recipes from the Mirador kitchens, together with handwritten receipts from Cliveden, Ditchley Park and Haseley Court, provides the basis for the book. Over 60 recipes, including classics such as corn fritters, Southern fried chicken and Pullman salad, combined with classic French and British dishes, have been adapted for the modern cook. Scattered throughout are previously unpublished letters from Nancy Astor to her nieces, inviting them to lunch, organizing dinner dances, reminding them to tidy their hair and keeping them up to date with her political news – and views. Jane Churchill is the great great-niece of Nancy Astor and the great niece of Nancy Lancaster. Inheriting the family gene for interior design, over the last forty years Jane created and sold a vast and successful collection of fabrics and wallpapers. She now runs her eponymous design practice in London.

LEAF

S T UA RT OV E N D E N

Cooking with leaves could be something as easy as adding a bowlful of young nettle tops to a pasta recipe or wrapping a fish tightly in a whole banana leaf to steam with citrus and botanicals. Sometimes simplicity is best; a scattering of Marjoram leaves over a focaccia studded with juicy blackberries, or a simple wild garlic aioli to serve with asparagus. This is a book for all seasons, offering a way of exploring an important aspect of plant kingdom that takes a fundamental role in our lives, but one that we often take for granted. An exploration of nature, colour, vibrance and food that tastes divine. Stuart Ovenden is a food photographer and author based in London, whose clients include Conde Nast Traveller, Delicious and Waitrose. Previously, he spent seven years on the team at BBC Good Food Magazine, the UK’s biggest selling food title. Stuart’s first book, The Orchard Cook was published in 2018..

The colours, patterns and textures of sea life, from silvery shoals of giant tuna to the tiny creatures camouflaged in coral reefs make this the ultimate sourcebook. When Colin Tennant first laid eyes on the white sands and turquoise waters of Mustique in 1958, and decided to buy it there and then, fifty extraordinary years have passed. This anniversary edition charts the history of beautiful people doing beautiful things in a beautiful place; from the houses they built, to the parties they gave. Conversations and interviews with many of these unique individuals are included, together with the iconic imagery created by the world’s most famous photographers who either owned a house or visited the island regularly. Patrick Lichfield, Robert Mapplethorpe, Slim Aarons, Derry Moore, Kate Martin and Bryan Adams are contributors, amongst many others. The economic development of Mustique has provided a blueprint for luxury destinations worldwide, and the history of how the Mustique Company came into being, helped along by some of the world’s most powerful CEOs, is a fascinating business study in itself. The philosophy, since inception, has remained true: Mustique is a community, not a resort, which takes care of everyone who lives, works and stays there. Investment in Mustique underwrites all the conservation, ecological and environmental planning, and provides financial support for the local communities in St Vincent. This combination, as they say, could only happen on Mustique.

MY CHILDHOOD AS AN EVACUEE

A N N M A R I E WA L L E N B E R G In March 1940 ten-year old Ann Marie Wallenberg found herself part of a daring escape across occupied Europe. Leaving neutral Sweden as the Nazis invaded Norway, she and her mother travelled by any means possible through the horrors of Stalin’s Russia, Mussolini’s Italy and into France. Having survived the Luftwaffe bombing their train to Calais, arrival in Britain was shortlived. As her stepfather was on Hitler’s deathlist, evacuation to America, across the U-Boat infested Atlantic was the next plan. Would Ann Marie ever return home?
