UNDERSTANDING HAITI Poverty, natural disaster, endemic disease, political upheaval and voodoo describe Haiti. The country’s media tagline is consistently, “The poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.” Haiti has no doubt faced, and continues to face, great challenges. But how did it get to where it is today? And what more is there to this small, Caribbean island nation? This presentation will provide a survey of Haitian history and culture, starting in pre-Columbian times and moving all the way to the present day.
