Alysha Wright founded S.A.L.T on March 15, 2017 with the goal to help make obtaining your college degree as a parent a little easier and she stated being in school and having a child is “hard”. Alysha stated, “There’s an everyday struggle balancing having a child and going to school … there’s a constant time constraint”. Her statements are reasons why she started this organization. Currently in the US there are absolutely no non-profit organizations strictly dedicated to helping student parents. It’s statistically proven that it is impossible to independently take care of a child and obtain your degree, however students beat the odds every day. S.A.L.T and its members strive to continue the beat the odds and help in the bettering of student parents across the board. SALT encourages parents to use campus resources for academic achievement. SALT provides education on contraception and family planning. SALT provides mutual aid through shared experiences in a group setting. SALT provides learning opportunities and workshops, on topics related to life skills and adjustment issues. SALT helps parents develop problem solving, stress management and coping skills. SALT raises awareness about student parents at Savannah State University. # # #
