ABOUT US

Creating art with fragrance since 1887

SOAP!? says Georges Schweder, as they

stroll through the courtyard of the Palacio da Bolsa. ‘Why soap? Why not Port? There’ve been boats carrying Port down the Douro river since the 12th century! Much more distinguished.’ He glances at the octagonal domed glass ceiling, admires the tiled fresco on the walls. ‘Or tiles?’ ‘Too much port,’ says Ferdinand Claus, his business partner and fellow compatriot. ‘I’m not talking about ordinary soap. I’m talking about extraordinary soap,’ he says. ‘Let’s try it for a bit, see how it goes. What do you think? And if you’re not so keen on soap, maybe Eau de Parfum one day?’ The year was 1887; the city Porto. And maybe the conversation didn’t exactly happen like that

between two German businessmen, recently arrived to embark on new adventures in their adopted home. But in whatever form, it did happen. There was a dream, a vision, and the conversations about Claus Porto soap have been continuing ever since, and now include ideas for fragrances, candles, and even accessories. Claus and Schweder’s finely crafted soaps smelt of eucalyptus, pine and vetiver, and were blended with the sea moss found on the Portuguese shore, or with juniper and cyclamen. Vanilla and patchouli were key notes, blended with rich shea and mango butters. Their outsider’s eye eagerly absorbed the beauty of their adopted homeland into their soaps, as they drew not just on the nature around

them as inspiration for the fragrance, but everything else they saw - the opulent Belle Epoque ceramics, the famed Azulejo tiles, all became ideas for their famous packaging. Family to family, in 1903 the 24 year old Achilles de Brito joined Claus and Schweder as a book-keeper, but his vision was so respected he quickly becoming a business partner, and as war came along and the lives of its original founders fell under scrutiny, he acquired the firm from his mentors and founders. He never forgot their original dream, but instead expanded on it, creating a Portuguese hothouse of design, crafts, and creativity, even setting up an in-house lithography department in 1953, thereby ensuring

a commitment to detail. In time Achilles’ son, grandson and great grandson would oversee the expansion of the brand, and whole families were employed at the factory, with some individuals working there for almost 70 years. And now, an entirely new conversation. Still Portuguese-owned, but as international-facing as ever, 130 years on and the family-ethos remains, with Aquiles de Brito, the great-grandson of Achilles de Brito, actively involved in the house of Claus Porto. Thanks to his familial experience and expert eye, the same beautiful, detailed designs have been given a chic update, with new, white and gold outer packaging, to appeal to a new generation of Claus Porto fans. 3

Our production process has strict and certified

quality controls, covering every stage from the selection of ingredients to the final packaging. The soaps are manually wrapped in their unique vintage labels. The eye-catching packaging of Claus Porto soaps is inspired by our extensive archive of hand-drawn artwork with its roots inthe rich culture of pre-republican Portugal andthe opulent aesthetics of Europe’s Belle Époque.

One hundred and thirty years on, Claus

Porto’s factory is still making soaps in line with time-honoured traditions in its hometown of Porto. But that’s not all. Along with products

such as body and hand lotions, scented candles and shaving creams, to name a few, the brand is investing increasingly in lifestyle products, like its new soap dishes, stationary collection and range of speciality teas.

It is present in 60 countries, sold in the world’s most prestigious stores, including Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus in the United States; Harrods and Liberty London in the UK;

DECO COLLEC TION

Claus Porto’s Deco collection makes a bold

statement with its dramatic patterned labels taken from our extensive archives. They draw on the charming designs that first made Claus Porto’s name in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Each of the collection’s 10 lines represents a different fragrance composed of ingredients that recall Portugal’s verdant countryside.

Deco was first launched as a collection of soaps, all blended with shea oil for a moisturizing effect. The range has since grown to include liquid soaps, body moisturizers and hand creams, along with aromatic candles and fragrance diffusers.

history and showcases the unique designs, patterns and labels that have made our company a style icon for the past 130 years. The full-color, 240 page book has a bilingual text in English and Portuguese and was written and designed by Andrew Howard, a British-born graphic designer, teacher, curator and design writer, based in Claus Porto’s home city of Porto since 1993.
