S construction of a new shopping centre in the Mathulini area in Umzumbe gets well underway, tempers are flaring as the Inkosi Bhekizizwe Luthuli, Umzumbe Municipality and the community seem not to be singing from the same hymn book. The project is being spearheaded by Inkosi Luthuli but the municipality admits they are not involved in any way. Umzumbe Municipality spokesperson Trevor Khanyile said the municipality was not consulted before the project started. “Generally as the municipality we are the custodian of the Spatial

Planning and Land Use Management Act 16 of 2013 (SPLUMA) that regulates planning for the use of land so that people build in correct areas designated for specific purposes. Our involvement starts with ensuring that the developer complies with the prescriptions of law when developing,” said Khanyile. The Act, said Khanyile, ensures that all development in an area falls within the means of the municipality and its future plans and zoning. Last week, community held a march after complaints were raised that employment is reserved for “outsiders,” among other things. Inkosi Luthuli called a media briefing on Wednesday where he

let it be known that construction of a shopping centre in the area has been a dream of his for a long time. Luthuli also said the municipality has refused to be involved with the project since the very beginning. He said in the early 2000’s he found a potential investor to start the project however, the investor failed to meet the deadline of initiation of the project. He said at that time a site number had already been given and the land belonged to a Mr Mbambo who later sold the land to the current owner Mr Ngubane who owns a tavern near the site. “When construction had to start, issues arose as the munici-

pality took some time to issue the permit to start construction. It took them two years to issue the permit after having Cogta involved. In the past weeks we have witnessed ward councillors and municipal officials together with a number of community members burning tyres on the site, interfering with the progress,” said Luthuli. He added that several meetings where the municipality was asked to participate, however they did not come. Khanyile said the municipality appreciates working together of all sectors of society but it is disturbing to see challenges with the construction. He said he hoped a solution will be found soon.

Ugu apologises  for  error VUSI  MTHALANE >>vusi.mthalane@media24.com UGU  District  Municipality  has  issued  an apology  after  incorrect  water  statements were  mailed  to  customers  last  month. Ugu municipal manager DD Naidoo said after this, the municipal call centre received many complaints about account names not matching  billing  details.  He attributed the error to a contracted printing company which he says mixed up the  data. “The billing system has the correct infor mation and the batch that has an error is for January. Affected customers are those residing  mainly  in  Shelly  Beach,  Uvongo Margate,  Ramsgate,  Southbroom,  Trafal gar, San Lameer and Park Rynie,” said Nai doo.  He said the error occurred on the state ments  that  get  posted  out,  not  emailed ones. “These will be reprinted and all bills will  be  corrected  accordingly.  The error is regretted and Ugu sincerely apologises to all its affected customers for the  inconvenience  caused,”  he  said.  Meanwhile, residents have been asked to  store  water  in  anticipation  of  planned water shutdowns scheduled to take place on 21 and 28 February. This is due to the con struction of a pipeline to the Bhobhoyi wa ter  treatment  plant.  Affected areas are from Hibberdene to Ramsgate and inland Gamalakhe, Murchi son, Bhobhoyi and Nyandezulu. Water will be  off  from  7am  until  3pm  on  both  days.

DONATION of equipment to the Port Shepstone Hospital will ensure that administrative processes are speedy and efficiently conducted and that more training sessions are made possible. This comes after the Road Accident Fund donated R500 000 to the hospital for laptops, projectors, external hard drives and a camera.

Hospital board chairman, Reverend John Grubb, thanked everyone involved in making the donation possible. “This will ensure proper filing of patient records and that the different departments are run more smoothly and efficiently,” he said. Grubb said he sourced the equipment last year and received a quote from Game. However the purchase was not possible at that time. “When I returned to the store

this year, the price had escalated by R3 500, but Game was kind enough to give us the equipment at the originally quoted price,” he said. The hospital’s acting CEO Dr Babusisiwe Dlamini-Kunene said the hospital had been waiting eagerly for such equipment. “Files are often misplaced. Patients information change and now we will be able to update these records. We also won’t have to deal with looking for storage space,” she said.

Doublemurder suspect  arrested A 19-YEAR-OLD man was arrested for the murder of his mother and sister in Thokotho, Gcilima on Wednesday. SAPS spokesperson Captain Gerald Mfeka said Margate police received a call that two bodies had been found at a house in Gcilima by a domestic worker and the suspect has been apprehended by the community.

Mfeka said officers found the bodies of a 34-year-old woman and a seven-month-old baby who had both been stabbed in the neck. He said the suspect was then arrested and a double-murder docket was opened. “Mfeka said allegations suggest that the suspect got into an argument with his mother while she was getting ready for work and he then stabbed his mother and baby sister,”

The suspect had previously been arrested for housebreaking and claims that he had a mental condition had not been confirmed. “In his previous arrest the suspect was claimed to be mentally challenged and was taken to a mental institution however, he was later released back to the police after observations proved he was not mentally challenged,” said Mfeka

On Monday Mfeka said the investigating officer took the docket to court as the suspect is still in a mental institution for examination. “The investigating officer took the case docket to Ramsgate Magistrate Court for the suspects next appearance as he was booked into a mental institution for two weeks to examine his mental state,” said Mfeka. - Supplied.

Brazen gang  behind  bars  for  a  long  time THE  end  to  an  exhaustive  investigation came  on  30  January  when  soughtafter house robbers were sentenced to a com bined  prison  term  of  165  years  in  the Scottburgh  Regional  Court. Three  armed  criminals  broke  into homes in the Scottburgh area in October and November 2011 and robbed their vic tims. Some of victims, including children, were terrorised, beaten, burnt with an iron and  raped.

A task team was immediately set up under the command of Detective Warrant Officer  Yugen  Moodley  of  Scottburgh SAPS.  On 25 November, 2011 the first suspect was arrested by Warrant Officer Brendon Rensburg  and  Warrant  Officer  Kenneth Glover of Umkomaas K9 Unit who also re covered  a  firearm  and  stolen  property.  Shortly  thereafter,  Amandawe  com munity  members  overpowered  and  ap

prehended two other men who attacked them and who were also sought after for the robberies. Another firearm was found in  the  possession  of  one  of  the  men.  An intense investigation followed and the recovered firearms were linked to two of the robberies that had occurred. Foren sic  evidence  and  expert  witnesses,  saw the three accused appear regularly before the  Scottburgh  Regional  Court.  The  fiveyear  trial  came  to  a  conclu

sion when  Scelo  Mkhize  (32)  was  sen tenced to 50 years, Smakahle Shabalala (27)  received  60  years  and  Siyanda  Gu mede  (34),  55  years.  Ugu Cluster Commander Major Gener al  Sethenya  Nxamagele  is  pleased  with the outcome of the trial, the perseverance of  the  investigation  team,  and  the  in volvement of the community in assisting police.  “Fighting  crime  is  everyone’s  re sponsibility”  she  said.    Supplied.

ist Association in 2014. A short while later, Reverend Mike Effanga, of the Concerned Citizens of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM), held a series of meetings with the municipality and the public, providing feedback and comment on why they should not permit nude bathing. “The operation is illegal as the Constitution does not permit nude bathing. Therefore a town’s by-law cannot go against this,” he said. Effanga’s group is of the impres-

sion that such a beach will lead to moral decay, children will be exposed to nudity, crime will rise and possibly even prostitution will occur. Traditional leaders from the area are of the view that the beach is sacred. Effanga compiled a report based on all this information and wrote to the Public Protector last year to intervene. Mkhwebane and a delegation from her office then visited the

beach to conduct their own investigation. Mkhwebane said her report will be concluded early this year, which the Concerned Citizens group eagerly awaits. “The public protector’s professional diligence is impressive and we are happy with the way the issue is being handled. Until she makes a decision, nude bathing at the Mpenjati beach is illegal. “We look forward to the final report.”

He added that the municipality is of the view that this review will create a positive image to stakeholders, tourists and the general public. “This will motivate the staff to comply further with key legislation governing financial matters. This also confirms the fact that there has been improvement

CANDYCE KRISHNA >>candyce.krishna@media24.com THE Shree Ramnarayan Temple Society invites everyone to its Maha Shivarathri prayer on 24 February at 6pm. The prayer will go on until 6am the next day. The public is invited to take part in the bhajans and recitals. Maha Shivratri translates to “great night of Shiva” and is a Hindu festival largely celebrated in India as well as Nepal. The festival is celebrated on the new moon day in the month of Maagha according to the Hindu calendar. The day is celebrated to venerate Lord Shiva, an important deity in Hindu culture. There are also many other mythological legends associated with this day. It is believed that the people who fast on this night and offer prayers to Lord Shiva bring good luck into their life. The most popular Maha Shivratri celebrations take place in Ujjain, believed to be the place of residence of Lord Shiva. Large processions are carried out throughout the city, with people thronging the streets to catch a glimpse of the revered idol of Lord Shiva. ARUSHA Govender (18) of Marburg will represent KZN in the Zee World Miss Teen Commonwealth SA 2017 pageant. The Fever caught up with her to find out more. Fever: Tell us a bit about yourself. TG: I consider myself to be a very adventurous, open minded individual who strives to persevere. My interests and activities include modelling, singing, dancing, hiking, picnics, and most of all, I love good food. Fever: When did your modelling career begin? TG: From the age of five, when my mom dressed me in beautiful dresses, I dreamt of being a model. My dad would make me walk up and down the passage and show me a few modelling steps. Fever: What are you studying and why have you chosen this field? TG: I am a second year Bcom marketing student. One of the reasons for my choice in Bcom is that it offers good job security, a respectable salary and decent annual leave. I also want to have an exciting, fast-paced job where I will never be bored. Fever: How did you hear about this pageant? TG: While I was researching my assignments in November last year I came across the entry form, spoke to my parents about it and next thing I

These hundreds  of  swallows  come  to the  South  Coast,  rent  accommodation  or stay in their own holiday homes and spend their Euros, Francs and Pounds which must be wonderful for them given the exchange rate. After all, our destination is not known for over the top prices so no wonder these long haul spenders come to our subtropical shores year after year and it is catching on. SA politicians  have  not  learnt THE 20th anniversary of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) on April 15, 2016, passed without fanfare. However, Jacana Media published an excellent pocket history of the TRC written by Mary Burton, who was a commissioner. The TRC, arising from the transition to democracy in 1994, had a specific and finite task: to probe atrocities committed during the apartheid era with the possibility of finding restorative justice rather than retribution. Those who fully disclosed their part in human rights violations committed during past conflicts could seek amnesty. Those who had suffered abuse or had lost family members had a right to know the truth. Although there are many criticisms of the work of the TRC, it is generally recognised that dealing with these past brutali-

I AM currently employed by the state and I consider myself a very dedicated employee. I take pride in serving the people of this country but nothing gets under my skin as someone, a member of the public, choosing to invoke his religion or religious beliefs at my place of employment. Firstly, I have taken my time to serve you and you think I am not clean enough to serve you just because I am male. I take offence to such. In my book, the invocation of your religious beliefs under the abovementioned circumstances smacks of tyranny, ungratefulness and conceit. In my book, it is a violation of my good-heartedness. I feel discriminated against whenever this scenario presents itself. Secondly, in my culture, a male my age is not allowed to touch a woman who is old enough to

ties was a crucial part in reaching some sort of national reconciliation. It is significant that former leader F.W. de Klerk and then president Thabo Mbeki attempted to prevent the publication of the final TRC report. In the light of the recent brutal and totally unacceptable abuse of power at the Sona in Parliament, the record of the TRC is a salutary reminder that South African politicians have not learnt from the history of the past. This deplorable behaviour takes us back to the draconian states of emergencies during the eighties. Where is our hardwon democracy in all this? It seems that one group of bloated, selfinterested patriarchs who have no regard for the rule of law, has replaced another. Mary K.

Imagine what would happen if every elderly woman were to refuse my help citing her cultural beliefs? The system would crash and service delivery would come to a standstill. How is it that some of us can compromise on our beliefs, be they religious or cultural, yet some members of the community refuse to return the favour? I have stated the context under which my concern emanates, therefore I do not expect to be misunderstood. Public Servant

Lateral thinking  needed

You get  the  leaders  you  vote  for INCUMBENT U.S. President Donald Trump seems to be getting more criticism than congratulatory messages. Kindly allow me to wish the big man everything of the best. He went after the biggest job in the world and was successful. Who are we to hate him for that? He won fair and square, and is here to stay, so get used to it. At the very least, the “bore” factor in politics is officially a thing of the past and the next four years are bound to be very interesting, if nothing else. Trump put aside a life of luxury and his billions to travel to each state, make his case and do the hard yards. Remember, our very own country voted in a man far worse, so why the shock? Have no sympathy for the U.S. (celebrities seriously need to stop their futile protesting) — the process was fair and you get exactly the government that you ask for. Malusi  Magwaza

THE chicken industry needs to do some lateral thinking. If the European Union (EU) only wants breasts, then it’s time to make a deal with it. We’ll take the EU’s cheap bone-in portions provided it buys our chicken breasts at a premium price. The chicken bones are extremely valuable; a bouillon will enrich any vegetable soup and research from Harvard Medical School reveals that the harvested cartilage is more effective than the most powerful drugs in treating inflammatory arthritis. becomes the victim. No wonder there is a vibrant trade of secondhand goods and the police usually are always caught in the middle. The suspects, like the students on TV, stir the trouble and when the police come in to take control they become the bad boys. I cannot believe this. The police must use force when suspects become uncontrollable otherwise how are they to take the upper hand of the situation by talking nicely. Please man, the people of this country need to sit up and think. Disturbed

THE article “Suspect shot, later dies” by Precious Gumede refers. Reading this article made me realise why police do not want to go out on call to protect us and our properties anymore, and I really don’t blame them. If I read correctly, it seems that the policeman who helped catch one of the suspects is now being investigated for murder. If this is so, are these thieves allowed to enter innocent people’s property, steal what they want and get away with it? Then on top of it all, they are offered VIP treatment on taxpayers’ money. What is this country coming to? Goodness me, the suspect does the harm to the innocent then

I MISS the peace and quiet one finds in libraries. Internet cafes have screaming disco music, apparently designed to create an ambiance. How on Earth does one associate the use of a computer to a recreational activity? Try to find information of a medical or legal nature while

Veral as mens se gewete oorsensitief is. Jy weet iets is verkeerd of jy voel dis verkeerd. Beskou jy jouself as geliefd? In Christus is jy God se geliefde seun of dogter. Jy hoef nie na ander se pype te dans nie. Leer om ja te sê, leer om nee te sê. Wees jouself, wees dankbaar, wees verantwoordelik.

New design  language  for  Mitsubishi

M

ITSUBISHI’S popular  compact crossover,  the  Mitsubishi  ASX,  is getting a refreshed look for the 2017 model  year.  In  addition  to  the  company’s new Dynamic Shield design language, the Mitsubishi ASX range now includes a new 2.0 MIVEC sixspeed CVT derivative coming in  at  under  R400 000. Nic Campbell, General Manager of Mit subishi  Motors  South  Africa,  states:  “We have  to  address  the  current  affordability needs of our customers... When you consid er  Mitsubishi’s  worldclass  safety  ratings, the new ASX 2.0 GL CVT is easily the best sub  R400  000  vehicle  on  the  market.”  The  new  2017  Mitsubishi  ASX,  which goes on sale immediately, is the first model in  South  Africa  to  feature  the  company’s

new Dynamic Shield design language. The striking new design is centred around a new front  grille,  which  is  significantly  more prominent than that of its predecessor and will soon be seen on other models, such as the new Mitsubishi Outlander and the much anticipated  new  Pajero  Sport.  The Dynamic Shield grille combines the previously  distinctive  “Safety”  and  “Per formance”  treatments  of  the  Mitsubishi frontend design. Models such as the Pajero have always been styled to appear impos ing, whilst still conveying a sense of safety and protection. The ASX and Outlander, on the other hand, feature a grille with a more aggressive  and  sporty  design.  In  the  ASX,  the  Dynamic  Shield  grille connects  the  upper  and  lower  sections  of

the bumper into one single air intake. The black section of the intake links the head lights and fog lights, and is surrounded by eyecatching chrome details that widen to wards  the  middle  of  the  Dynamic  Shield grille.  The  grille  is  rounded  off  by  a  lower chromed section, which mimics the design of a strike plate and hints at the ASX’s SUV family tree. Mitsubishi is using the introduc tion  of  its  new  design  language  to  effect other,  smaller  tweaks,  while  the  popular items  and  high  specification  level  remain unchanged.  Changes  to  the  new  ASX  in clude  redesigned  seat  cushions  that  are fashioned  with  longdistance  passenger comfort  as  the  main  priority.  The new Mitsubishi ASX lineup consists of  five  derivatives  all  featuring  the  frugal

and highly reliable 2.0 MIVEC petrol engine. This engine is equipped with Mitsubishi’s In novative  Valve  Timing  Electronic  Control System (MIVEC) and multipoint injection that produces 110 kW at 6 000 rpm and 197 Nm of torque at 4 200 rpm. Power is deliv ered  to  the  front  wheels  via  a  fivespeed manual gearbox or CVT transmission with six  preprogrammed  gear  steps.  The ASX is one of the safest vehicles in its class and boasts a fivestar Euro NCAP safety rating. All ASX models feature Mit subishi’s  proprietary  Reinforced  Impact Safety Evolution (RISE) body shell, no less than  seven  airbags,  Isofix  child  restraint mountings and a range of dynamic safety systems that include ABS, electronic brake force  distribution  (EBD)  and  emergency

T Mary’s girls don’t just enjoy equal opportunities, they enjoy every opportunity. St Mary’s is a respected school, steeped in tradition and family values. Our heritage, based on Christian values and an understanding of accountability and self, is at the heart of everything that we do. While we may be 111 years old, our thoughts are innovative, our systems progressive and our approach is modern. This allows us to focus on our vision of a brighter future for each and every girl at the school, laying solid

foundations right from Grade R to enable her to grow into a confident and happy person. We encourage girls to measure themselves against their own performances and not those of others, thereby developing a sense of selfworth, self-respect and self-motivation. “We want our girls to feel valued and supported in their school environment, and respectful of the role that they play in our close-knit community, in society, and in our country. Our motto ‘Service before self and God before all’ serves as a constant reminder of

St Mary’s  girls  have  the  freedom  to  truly  be  themselves. our roots and our responsibilities,” says Jonathan Manley, executive principal.

Matric results St Mary’s achieved a 100% bachelor’s degree pass rate, with an average of 3.44 distinctions per student and 341 distinctions overall. With this, 78% of our final results were either an A or a B. We were one of only two schools to have seven of our girls placed in the top 5% of students who wrote the IEB examinations. Specialists in girls’ education We employ experienced, qualified teachers who are passionate about

what they do. This shines through in their ability to provide our girls with a holistic education that is tailored towards girls.

Confidence Our girls have the freedom to truly be themselves. They are able to enjoy an environment in which their intellectual and physical confidence can blossom.

Care and support We understand girls. We understand their needs and provide a nurturing environment where they feel comfortable exploring all the opportunities that are available to them.

Boarding Boarding is part of the fabric of our school. Open to girls from Grade 8 to matric, our boarding houses create a sense of family. Here, lifelong bonds are formed and our girls learn valuable lessons and develop a healthy sense of independence.

Leadership The girls of today are the future leaders of tomorrow. Our school provides the perfect platform for your daughter to learn the value of responsibility, and the potential she has to inspire and lead others.

F you would like to witness some of the country’s and the world’s best water skaters perform, get down to Umtamvuna River Lodge on 25 Febraury. That is where and when wakeskaters will compete for the title of the 2017 Backyard Sessions Champion. “This year sees current WWA World Champion and Wakeskate Tour Champion Andrew Pastura from the USA bringing his expertise to the South Coast along with threetime IWWF Ladies World Champion, Zuzana Vrablova,” said organiser Matti Buys. They will only compete, but also

guide the local ladies in getting in the water and ultimately on a wakeskate. International wakeskaters such as Andrew Roehm and Cole Kraiss together with Port Edward’s Matti Buys and Kaylib Louw, will feature at the event. “This year has an even better twist on it with the introduction of the junior divisions.” Last year the Umtamvuna River Lodge noticed a huge growth in the participation of youngsters in the sports of wakeboarding and wakeskating as well as an impressive development in the level of riding from these children. “One example that been of Creston High’s Kiera Booker who in the past seven months of wakeskating

has shown immense growth.” After competing in his first competition in Johannesburg earlier this month he will return home to ride in front of friends and family in the junior division. “Hopefully this is a start of more to come from the talented South Coast riders.” Other entertainment during the day will be children’s slides and a skate ramp. Food and drinks are available at the lodge. The event starts at 9am and will run throughout the day until the start of pro finals at 5pm. Entry is R30 for adults and R20 for kids at the gate.

ARGATE sansei, Gordon Douglas attended a martial arts seminar in Cape Town recently with two leading Japanese Budo experts - Tsuneo Ando Shihan who is an 8th Dan Yoshinkan Aikido, Kancho of the Ryudojo and Kenji Nakazawa Kancho, founder of Aikisambo. The seminar featured Aikido, Aikisambo and Ashihara Karate. “I have been training in martial arts for over 20 years now starting with karate,” said Douglas. After six years of Aikido training, he added that it was a great honour to meet and train with the head of Yoshinkan Aikido, Ando sensei. “I have been training with Kancho Kenji since 2014 and I’m one of only two people in South Africa certified to teach Aiki Sambo,” he said.

Ando sansei was instrumental in forming the Urayasu City Aikido Association. This association is unique in being the only organisation in the world where the Yoshinkai and the Aikikai co-operate on various local activities. He is also currently the Chief Instructor at the Yoshinkan Aikido Headquarters Dojo in Tokyo. Kenji Nakazawa studied various forms of martial arts while working at the Kanagawa Prefectural Police Department, namely Judo, Kendo and Taihojutsu. He experienced Judo and Taihojutsu competition for four years. In 1976, he left Yokosuka for San Francisco, USA where worked for a tour company as a tour guide and interpreter for eight years. During his stay, he taught the self defence class at the sports clubs in the Bay area. “It was truly an honour to attend a course hosted by the masters,” he added.
