Vagrants facing ‘war’ >> Taxi council warns City loiterers will be forcefully removed from ranks NOKUTHULA KHANYILE

P

IETERMARITZBURG taxi owners have warned that “war is on the cards” if authorities do not act decisively soon on whoonga users who have infiltrated taxi ranks in the CBD . The taxi said on Tuesday that the group of vagrants and drug peddlers started taking over the taxi ranks after they were moved from Matsheni Beer Hall in Retief Street after it was closed by Msunduzi Municipality in December 2016. uMgungundlovu regional taxi council chairperson Bheki Sokhela said numerous attempts to get the municipality to assist them had fallen on deaf ears. “We are not going to tolerate this any longer. We want the whoonga boys out of the taxi ranks. “Commuters don’t feel safe and this is affecting our business. People are opting to hire private transport because they are scared to come to our taxi ranks. We won’t lose our business over something that can be managed,” he said. Sokhela said they believed whoonga users were the reason behind the spike in petty thefts at taxi ranks. Vagrants sit together to smoke whoonga on Retief Street. “We have public toilets but they are PHOTO: NHLANHLA NKOSI not being used. “We want them out of taxi ranks. If them forcefully.” “Old women are forced to urinate There is a strong urine stench outA street vendor at the Retief taxi side the taxi ranks because people are outside; we can’t allow this to contin- the municipality is not willing to meet ue. us halfway, we’ll be forced to remove rank, who declined to be named for scared to go inside the toilets.

You can’t even fight because there are over 50 of them.” The street vendor said the vagrants also posed a serious health hazard because commuters were inhaling the whoonga that is being smoked. “Why is the municipality not doing anything? “Are they waiting for someone to die before they resolve this issue?” Fires were burnt and the vagrants, who were standing in groups, appeared drugged, when journalists arrived in Retief Street taxi rank onuesT day. A commuter who uses the Retief Street taxi rank said: “They sit and wait for people inside the toilet so they can rob them. “Our town is not safe anymore. The Retief taxi rank has become a no-go area. The authorities need to devise a plan around this issue.” Msunduzi Municipality spokesperson Thobeka Mafumbatha said the City is working on a plan to resolve the issue. She said the criminality aspect was the domain of the police and should be reported to them. She said the City would reinforce security at the public toilets around the city.

Celebrating Madiba in style

LETHIWE MAKHANYA >>lethiwe.makhanya@media24.com

I

N doing their part to uphold the spirit of Nelson Mandela,KnitWits for Madiba have once again embarked on their annual secret scarf day mission. KnitWits, and volunteers across the country, have been churning out scarves, en masse, for the 67 blankets event. These scarves were tied to trees in different areas across the country, including Pietermaritzburg, last Thursday for people in need to take for some winter warmth. 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day ambassador Shareen Scott told Echo that they were very excited about this initiative, saying that they have tied 100 scarves in different spots across Pietermaritzburg. “We always run this programme, every year, all over the country. We are on the fourth year now.It is one of our ways of giving back to the needy people in our country. “It is also a good way of getting people together to do something for needy people. We will continue to do it and we hope that, as time goes on, more people get involved so that we can

Ambassador for 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day Shareen Scott shows off some of the knitwear. help as many people as we can, ” she said. Founder of 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day Carolyn Steyn said: “Our knitwits and happy hookers throughout South Africa have been lobbying, knitting and crocheting to make sure that there are thousands of scarves to tie around trees

of eight and 10 years. The competition kicked off yesterday and will run until October 19. Children have to use their creativity to colour in the picture to reveal the hidden image. Entry is free and entry forms can be collected at Spice Chicken stores on 365 Langalibalele Street and 356 on Church Street.Entry forms will also be distributed to schools around the city. — Supplied

IN celebrating Nelson Mandela’s centenary, local business, Spice Chicken, erected a poster yesterday (Wednesday). This poster forms part of a colouring-in competition that the business is running. This competition has two categories, one for children between the ages of four to seven years and another for children between the ages

for people who need some warmth to take a scarf that has been made with love. As Madiba said: ‘it’s in our hands now’, and that is the ethos of the amazing family of 67 blankets. This year is also a teaser for the record breaking 27km scarf we will be laying out in Howick at the capture site on July 29, ”she said.

Oh my God, I now believe in miracles and I am happy again with my family. I am Shenise from Raisethorpe Thanks to Mama Husna for bringing back my husband who had left me for 2 years. When I went to mama Husna she burnt some muthi for me, asked me for my husbands names which I gave her and when I went home after 6 hours my husband phoned me and told me he wants to come back and since then we are happy and my family is all together now. JERRY BARNES LET me again take this opportunity , and from the bottom of my heart,to thank the management of Maritzburg Echo, especially it’s editor Candyce Krishna, for kindly allowing us to publicise our community sports events. Many of you will agree with me that a lot of publications are, unfortunately, overlooking community events, especially from the nearby townships. It is always heartbreaking that most of the media houses around the country, especially newspapers, have decided, over the years, to side-step their community events or news because of financial reasons.Talking from experience, and after growing up reading the Echo, everybody around the greater Pietermaritzburg and other nearby areas has always known this

publication as the “People’s Mouthpiece”. Echo has been part and parcel of the local communities that hail from different backgrounds, cultures, religions and races. I was very lucky to be there during my young days and during the early years of Echo. I saw Echo growing from covering local circles, going to regional and provincial levels. I was lucky enough to serve under four editors and spend 18 years there. The fact is, the support we are given byEcho management allows us to educate our communities about our events, news, and projects and it also gives us a lot of publicity . Last year, when I decided to officially start the Ward 34 Annual Community Awards, I was not aware that it was going to be warmly welcomed and embraced by everybody in the area. I was not only surprised and emotional but also humbled during our last year’ s very first event. It outplayed itself, the way it was supported in many ways, and was well attended. This year, I am saying again to all my ard W 34 community members from Eastwood, Panorama, Cinderella Park, Madiba and Malivana, let’s all unite and work together in order to make our 2018 event big and successful again. Let us also not forget that we don’ t have official sponsors to help out with trophies, medals or miniatures and we need to donate some to make it happen. If we were able to do it last year , let’s do it again this year. I know we can do it! Let us all show that at Ward 34 we are all united and proud of our community. For more details about the Ward 34 Annual Community Awards contact Jerry Barnes at 083 521 9553 or jerryb.barnes228@gmail.com or Mike Amod at 079 874 4637 or e-mail mikeamod@gmail.com Editor’s note: Thank you for the compliments. We will continue to deliver a top quality product to our readers and advertisers.
