Yes,  we  can  talk  about  some  of  the  lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not  be  very  festive  at  all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with  you.  We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful  individuals  who  are  slowly  changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. Dear Readers, TODAY marks the end of another year for the Hillcrest Fever, and as the festivities kick off for this season, let us reflect on moments that touched our lives and the community this past year. 2014 has been marked by persistent challenges in our economy with price inflations (food, electricity, fuel, etc.). We had weather catastrophes and crime

group of youth from Imbali have been left traumatised after witnessing one of their friends lose their life in front of them. Buyisile Sithole was one of the seven people who was run over by a car in Imbali Unit BB next to Izwilesizwe Primary School last Thursday evening. Buyisile died at the scene while others were injured and were rushed to Edendale and Northdale hospitals. She and her friends, including Ward 17 councillor Thamsanqa Sithole, were on their way to visit a bereaved family in the area ahead of the funeral when the accident happened. Sithole said that the community is still shocked by this accident. He told Echo that they had just finished collecting money which they were going to give to the grieving family when they saw a car driving at a high speed towards them.

“When we saw the speed the car was travelling at we got scared, but we thought that nothing was going to happen as we were not standing on the road but under a shelter on the pavement,” Sithole said. Sithole said that as the car got closer it seemed as if it was slowing down, but within a blink of an eye, they were run over. “It happened so fast that we could not even escape the car. Buyisile was crying asking for help and we ran to her and tried to help her. I ran home and fetched a car. When we tried to lift her up we realised that she was seriously injured. “We rushed to Mbalenhle Clinic to get an ambulance but there were no ambulances available. We later got a private ambulance that rushed to the scene to assist us. She survived for an hour but she later died at the scene while paramedics were busy trying to save her,” said Sithole. Sithole said that they are devastated by the death of Buyisile as she was very helpful in the community as

Through the difficult times, our readers have once again proven that we are, without a doubt, among the most resilient and strong-willed. We have weathered all the storms that came our way and have demonstrated that we can be a community to be proud of - from our disabled horse rider achieving his goals to a local woman beating breast cancer and becoming an inspiration to others - our community stands together proud! We are confident that 2015 will be better than ever. We, at The Hillcrest Fever, have faced our

I am still shocked by the incident but as a leader, I have to be strong for the family and the community,” Sithole said that they are busy working together with the Msunduzi Municipality in getting counselling for those who were injured and those who are traumatised by the incident. It is still unclear if the driver of the car was arrested or not. Plessislaer Police Station Captain Musa Ntombela was not reached for comment at the time of going to print. A memorial service takes place on Friday next to Shosholoza Centre at 3pm.

Ward 24 youth starts cleaning campaign LETHIWE MAKHANYA >>lethiwe.makhanya@Media24.com

T

HE African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) of Ward 24 initiated a clean-up campaign last Friday where they identified areas under their ward that needed tidying up.

The youth started with cutting grass at Oribi and also launched a programme called “Leaders in Training” (Lit) which provides a platform for local small businesses in the ward to be registered on a database, creating exposure for their businesses. The information can be accessed at the ward councillor’s office. Fezile Mhlongo, who is the member

of ANCYL, told Echo that they started this campaign after experiencing problems with Msunduzi Municipality who had failed to trim verges and grassy areas. “We took the initiative and fundraised, and we managed to purchase four machines to use for grass cutting. This will be an ongoing campaign as we will continue to clean more places that

IVULIZANDLA Community Care Centre in the Willowfontein KwaPhupha area is urging people to help so that they can be to build a proper house for the elderly in the area. The house will be used as a venue where all elderly people who need help will meet to discuss their issues and also get an opportunity to meet with nurses and social workers. Grace Mnikazi, who is the founder of this centre, told Echo that she has always used her five-room house as a meeting point. “I started this centre with six people in 2016 but now I have 150 people. We meet every Tuesday and Friday to discuss the issues that they [elderly] have and try to assist them. I even organise nurses and social workers to come to attend every month so that the elderly don’t have to go to clinics and wait in long queues for them for their medication. “I have always been fond of elderly people since I was young, that is why I decided to start this centre. I had nothing when I started but because I wanted to help, I tried my best even though it was not easy. I did not even have food to feed them. I would go and sell treats at the school in order to get money to buy bread for them to eat,” she said. Mnikazi, who sells food at Silwanetshe Primary School for a living, said seeing elderly people happy motivates

Money buys everything NICOLA JONES

4 MAY 2018

“YOU see! I sent you to the right school after all!” No doubt hundreds of parents say this each year, but this comment, heard at the weekend, came after a narrow win by a first hockey side. The child to whom the remark was addressed, one assumes, initially wanted to attend our losing school, but the mother wanted otherwise, and used a sporting defeat as justification. Nothing wrong there — none of us is as God, after all. But after 15 years of watching schoolboy rugby at this particular private establishment, and nearly as many witnessing the throwing of coins by its pupils at the feet of our family of schoolboys, perhaps the time is right for a word about it all. Once, a parent threw cash notes on the ground, next to an injured child in our losing side, and suggested our school buy a new coach. I was so conflicted at the time between punching this hideous pretence for a father on the nose, and grabbing the cash and running, that the moment of retribution was lost. I suppose the overwhelming message being imparted to the Godly boys is that money buys everything, including players and coaches. The most important point is that One Wins, everything from schoolboy sports matches to getting away with murder. Consequences not so obvious, however, include the fact that many private schools at the moment are battling to field three teams per age group. So, of 120 pupils in a grade, 80 will choose to play hockey over rugby. And what about the pressure of encouraging all these boys to conform to the standards of capitalism, the prevailing economic order of the elite? If you question the school or the

parents about this, you question the fundamental values around which they have built their lives and on which their schooling system depends. Not comfortable. Where large numbers of schoolboys are now choosing not to play rugby, this isn’t surprising. I remember having an argument with a principal once about rugby being compulsory, and his argument was that for boys, it is a controlled way of finding outlets for natural aggression, and he had a point. That, however, was some 10 years ago, and times have changed. Now we have schools competing for players: kiddie professionals, getting paid for playing rugby at school. And the increased competitiveness of schoolboy rugby has resulted in these kids becoming bigger and stronger — one longitudinal study from 1968 to 2011 pegged the average body mass of players at Craven Week as having increased by 10 kg (6,6%). Of course, some of this weight increase can be attributed to resistance training, as all the “top rugby schools” have on-campus gyms. And one cannot argue that the heavier players have a competitive advantage, as numerous studies have shown that a disparity in body size may increase the risk of injury.Much more concerning, however, is the number of age group rugby players who have tested positive for anabolic steroids and stimulants in the past two years. Studies have painted a lurid picture of widespread abuse and the connivance in some instances of coaches and team-mates as well. Many schools adhere to random drug tests, but the blood tests are extremely expensive, and the average schoolboy appears to know all the finer points of manipulating urine tests. (I guess it shouldn’t be forgotten that

some steroid abuse among schoolboys is merely for them to look good — some 63% of schoolchildren admitting this in one survey.) Steroids, however, are expensive, as are legal supplements, and most abuse is consequently found at quintile 5 schools (the wealthy schools, including former Model C institutions). If you have the money, you can (literally and figuratively) grow. Small private schools and former Model C schools are different, in that many ordinary children with working parents who battle financially make enormous sacrifices to send their children to these schools, and the value systems are not necessarily the same. They can’t buy coaches and players to the same extent as they don’t have the capital resources to do so. But back to the Big Private Schools. One notable incident at a Johannesburg school fairly recently resulted in a new war cry by a BPS, which went thus: “It’s all right, it’s okay, we’ll have jobs for you one day”, on the occasion of them losing to a government school.I guess money even makes it okay to lose sometimes. Here in KZN this weekend, it was loud rap and “f**k my body” music from a small group of the opposition, wearing an astonishing array of strange hats and funky dark glasses, while their paler compatriots practised their cricket fielding skills by hurling loose change around. Our wing nearly got concussion from the rain of coins on his head at one point. Even the parents couldn’t resist the odd dig: a brilliant saved try at one stage elicited the comment: “It must have been a recessive gene”. I guess money makes it okay to be racist as well. Cut the ‘commissions’ paid to football bosses to fix SA’s game the sport, first involving former referee and TV analyst Andile “Ace” Ncobo and Jordaan, and now Khoza and Jordaan. But, why should there be so much bad blood between our administrators in light of SA football being so far from where it could be? Bafana Bafana’s shoddy world ranking at one level and the poor state of amateur football at another are clear examples of this massive room for improvement in the sport. With this being the case, you would think that people would be reluctant to run football and endure endless stress and sleepless nights. Moreover, shouldn’t Jordaan (66) and Khoza (70) be more concerned about going gently into retirement, having served the game, as well as the struggle for democracy, for so many years? This is clearly not on the agenda of either man. But one wonders whether this would still be the case if there were far fewer commissions

Sports Plus Carl Peters

I

T is sad and ominous for the “beautiful game” in this country that two of its most powerful officials, Danny Jordaan and Irvin Khoza, are seldom presented as brothers in arms in the news, when there’s still so much work to be done in the sport from the ground up. More often than not, the football community is served a negative or controversial article when both these ageing men are in it. The latest came a few days ago when SA Football Association (Safa)

president Jordaan accused Khoza, boss of the Premier Soccer League (PSL) and one of four vice-presidents at Safa, of trying to defame him by allegedly giving financial support to Jordaan’s rape accuser, Jennifer Ferguson. It is reported that investigations into the rape case and the counter charge of defamation are now on the go. So are plans for the next elections at Safa, which might help to explain this latest dose of political drama in

and kickbacks available to administrators. How it does not come across as unethical behaviour when officials earn commissions for responsibilities they should be taking care of anyway, like negotiating deals with broadcasters and corporates, boggles the mind. Considering that Jordaan, Khoza and a number of others have made millions from the game down the years, one can see the politicking going on for a long time unless the sport can find the guts to take a closer look at those nasty commissions. By seriously restructuring them, reducing first-class travel and accommodation, and limiting access to paid-for overseas conferences, we could end up with administrators who are genuinely focused on correcting the game rather than ones who keep eyeing “top dollar” while trying to get the sport going. Meanwhile, KwaZulu-Natal foot-

ball lost one its big servants when Bheka Phakathi passed away in a car accident on Saturday night at the age of 43. As Golden Arrows chairperson Mato Madlala fondly recalled this week, Phakathi was among a group of young soccerites from Lamontville, south of Durban, who helped Arrows become members of the First Division and then the Premier League by asking former Arrows boss Rocky Madlala to form a club and give them something to do. Phakathi was an impressive midfield strong-man for Arrows before moving to Pirates and then, near the end of his playing career, Maritzburg United, before he joined the coaching fraternity. His premature death came shortly after another Arrows man had been involved in a major car accident, suggesting our football guys need to take more care on the roads.

United plan strong finish CARL PETERS

T

HE ambitious and youthful men of Maritzburg United will have to “press the reset button” as they contemplate their last two matches of the 2017/18 season — both massive assignments for them. Not only is coach Fadlu Davids expecting his sprightly men to have renewed hunger for their next assignment after losing to Chiefs last weekend, but the reboot will also feature three key players coming back into the selection frame to give Davids a full complement of hopefully-recharged players. “It’s kind of a good thing that we lost to Chiefs, because we have to forget all the praise we got from everybody for our positive results recently and will have to press the reset button,”said Davids yesterday in putting a positive spin on Saturday’s 2-0 loss in Egoli. “The loss came at the right time. We now have to go back to the things we did in the league and Cup before we lost to Chiefs for our next match.” That next match for the fourthplaced “Men in Blue”, as Maritzburg players call themselves, is a KwaZuluNatal derby against the recently-improved Golden Arrows team in the last round of the Absa Premiership at Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday, May 12. For that assignment,Davids will welcome his first-choice goalkeeper Richard Ofori, influential midfielder Siphesihle Ndlovu and often-used substitute Mxolisi Kunene back from one-game

suspensions that kept them out of the clash with Chiefs, who leapfrogged Maritzburg into third place with their deserved win on home soil. More good news on the manpower front is that Davids has no major injuries affecting his selection process at this point in time. The league showdown with Arrows in front of the “Blue Army” of chanting United fans will be followed seven days later by the most exciting fixture in the club’s 14-year history — the Nedbank Cup final against equally hungry Free State Stars in Cape Town. Davids said that he was still hopeful of finishing third in the league before plotting Stars’ downfall a week later. That would come to pass with a win over Arrows and a loss for Chiefs in their last match against relegation-threatened Ajax Cape Town in the Mother City on the same day, because Chiefs sit on 45 points and Maritzburg have 43. Arrows are six points behind Maritzburg in seventh place, while Ajax lie just above alreadyrelegated Platinum Stars at the base of the standings but will avoid the play-offs should a combination of positive results emerge for them before the curtain comes down on the 30-game league campaign. Davids said: “I want us to finish on 46 points, even if we don’t go back into third place. So, we will be going all out for a win against Arrows with all our regu-

lar players. “We will not be resting any players in the Arrows game with the Cup final in mind. We must first worry about Arrows and then Free State Stars. “Another reason we can’t afford to rest players is because there is no fixture this week and any rested players would not played for two weeks before the Cup final. That would not be good for their rhythm.” Aside from Davids’ men and Chiefs fighting for a third-place finish in the last
