Parents protest, demanding new classrooms MAKHOSANDILE ZULU >>makhosandile.zulu@media24.com

PUPILS at Msilinga Primary School in Ezinketheni near Copesville have not returned to the classroom as a stay away pushed by the parents is under way. The protest action began last Monday when the par ents barred pupils and teachers from entering the school premises, demanding that the new building, although under construction, should be put to use instead of the existing mobile classrooms. Parents said the building of the school began seven

years ago and their children have been using dirty and overcrowded classrooms and unhygienic mobile toilets, which all pose threats to the pupils’ health. According to the chairperson of the school governing body (SGB) Ray Mabena, the completion of the school has been postponed several times, with the last promise for it to be done being January. A meeting between the Department of Education (DoE) officials, parents and other stakeholders, was scheduled for January 26, so an update could be provided to the parents. The parents had stated that should their demand of using the new classrooms even though electricity and water have not been connected to the new building, not be met, the stay away would continue. That meeting was moved to January 30, and the decision whether the stay away would continue was to be taken then. Accord ing to a parent who attended the meeting on Tuesday, a decision was taken that schooling would only resume on February 5, and the pupils would move into the new school building.
