Man drowns in Wewe River ANDILE SITHOLE >>Andile.sithole@media24.com

A

NOTHER human body was found in the Wewe River in Newtown near Tongaat re-

cently. A man who was only identified as Andile was crossing the river when he allegedly fell into the river and drowned. Fishermen found his body floating in the river four days after he went missing. According to the residents, five people have drowned while trying to cross the river in the past few months. A resident Nelisiwe Maphumulo (41) and other parents escort their children to cross the river when they go to school. Maphumulo who originally comes from Bhamshela, upper Tongaat relocated to Newtown in 2008 after RDP houses were given to the residents. “I escort my two children and help them cross the river. In the afternoon I come back and wait for them near the bank of the river. The other day I almost lost my life when I tried to

cross the river with my child. “We both fell into the water and we almost drowned,” Maphumulo said. The residents have to walk on top of the sewage pipe running across the river to get into Newtown. There is no bridge. Another resident Dolly Zondi (49) confirmed to have witnessed people drowning in river. “We need a bridge in Newtown. For the past 19 years living in the area, I have not enjoyed the fruits of our democracy that we fought for. “I am concerned about the safety of my children. Another body was found recently after it was washed away by floods. Our officials should come and get first hand experiences from the residents,” Zondi said. When the Coastal Weekly journalist visited the area on Tuesday, April 24, parents were seen waiting for their children across the river. Councillor Dolly Munien said: “This is not on. It’s so dangerous for children being taken over this pipe. I am going to try my best to get a bridge installed at that spot,” Munien said. Munien sent her condolences to

Rock-throwing allegations investigated ANDILE SITHOLE >>Andile.sithole@media24.com THE allegations about tow-truck operators paying desperate people to throw stones into the cars from overhead bridges are still under investigation. Metro police spokesperson senior Superintendent Parboo Sewpersad said that the police had received information about tow-truck operators being involved in the rock throwing incidents in Durban. It’s alleged that operators hire the people to throw stones over the bridges to cause road accidents. “There were two [alleged] incidents reported involving tow-truck operators. However, witnesses didn’t come forward with [further information]. If the witnesses are not coming forwards with the information, the police cannot go further with the investigation,” Sewpersad said. In Verulam a driver of VW Polo survived when a stone was thrown over the bridge into his car on Inanda Road on April 22. According to Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa), the victim claimed that a group of unknown men threw stones and boulders at his car. In a statement sent by Rusa, few boulders and stones were found in the vicinity of the incident. In a separate incident, a car was stoned in the same vicinity on Tuesday morning. The vehicle was damaged, but no injuries were reported.

cial visit from MEC for Health Sbongiseni Dhlomo who handed over a wheelchair to him on April 20 . Victor suffered a stroke which rendered him immobile in January this year. When the MEC arrived at Victor’s home,he also discovered that his wife Johanna Victor (65) can barely see and is in dire need of a cataract operation. Victor, whose speech is also impaired, was also seen by Dr Jimmy Mthethwa, chief director of Public Health and Non-Communicable Diseases and deputy manager of the Department’s Disability and Rehabilitation Unit Sithembiso Blose. They will be providing ongoing advice and support to the couple. The department said in a statement, Dhlomo made arrangements for Victor’s wife to be transported to McCord’s Eye-Care Hospital for an assessment which is expected to culminate with a cataract operation. Dhlomo said: “It is very important for the Department of Health to be receptive and to make house visits where there has been a request for help. We’ve come to this Victor family to provide assistance.” Johanna thanked MEC Dhlomo for his gesture, describing it as a Godsend. “We’ve been suffering for so long. We’ve been asking for so long, but there’s been no help. I’m very grateful. God is very wonderful, for sending the MEC and his team to come and help us. God Bless him. I am very happy that we’re getting help. I can’t thank God enough,” said Johanna .

Reaction Unit SA crime report RECKLESS TRUCK DRIVER CAUSES ACCIDENT: VERULAM A 38-year-old woman suffered spinal injuries after the vehicle she was travelling in was forced off the road by a reckless municipal truck driver. At approximately 12.15 pm on Monday, April 16. Paramedics from Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) were called out to the Inanda Road near Dawncrest in Verulam to render medical assistance. Upon arrival medics found that a yellow municipal truck with an NDM registration and a silver Opel Monza were on the scene. According to a witness, the driver of the truck had been driving recklessly for several kilometres and pushed three cars off their paths of travel. He eventually overtook the Opel Monza closely and his front left rim clipped the side of the light motor vehicle. This caused the driver of the car to lose

At approximately 2.58 pm the Rusa operation centre received a call from a horse riding school in Canelands. The caller informed the controller that a car with a male and female occupant had driven into his property for assistance and that one person was injured. Reaction officers arrived on scene and found a 45-year-old man with injuries to his right arm. His 34-year-old wife was seated next to him in the front passenger seat. The man was found without his pants. According to Sumaya Khan, she and her husband were on route back to their home in Darnall from the Mazaar in Hazelmere where they had visited to collect donations for a mosque that they owned. The woman explained that they had taken a short-cut through Canelands and drove past the library when the car stalled. They were then approached by two African males who attacked them with knobkerries. They took R500 in cash from the female and then assaulted the husband. The woman alleged that the suspects then removed her husband’s size 38 blue Levis jeans which contained a wallet with R600 in cash and fled. Whilst paramedics treated the man for

HE Sunfield Home School in Verulam held its annual autism awareness parade last Saturday to commemorate Autism awareness month on April 21. A float procession through the Verulam CBD ensured that the combined voice of autistic children was heard, with organisations and hundreds of pupils from local schools uniting with Sunfield to light it up in a public show of support. The deputy mayor of eThekwini

Municipality Fawzia Peer attended the event. The children of Sunfield Home surprised Peer with a handmade token of their appreciation. Autistic children showed the crowd their potential to lead a better, happier lifestyle with acceptance and a little understanding from people. They embraced their different abilities, taking to the stage to dance, talk about autism and present their gift to the deputy mayor themselves.

The One Out community group from Verulam supported the school with a steady stream of food the entire day, also winning the prize for best Float at the event. Sunfield Home School wishes to thank its sponsors, Ethekwini Municipality, the community, supporting organisations (Cricket Strength and C.E.R.T) and local schools for standing with them to create awareness in April, the month of Autism. — Supplied by Laura Pillay.

SAPS embark on crime awareness campaign S

APS Tongaat embarked on theft of motor vehicle crime awareness campaign that was held at the Westbrook beach and La Mercy beach on April 19. Corporate communication Captain Patrick Ngwane, sector commander Warrant Officer Manisha MaharajMarie, Social Crime Prevention coordinator Constable Lance Naidoo and deputy sector commander Constable Reggie Pillay conducted and took part in the campaign and distributed pam-

phlets. The purpose of the crime awareness was to sensitize the beach goers and motorists to be alert as the theft of motor vehicle in the area has increased recently. Most of the cases reported it transpired that the motorists hide the car keys under the vehicles when they are going to swim. Ngwane said: “We appeal to the motorists to refrain from doing this practice as it entices criminal activities, the criminals hide and observed motorists when

they hide the keys and later take the car keys from the spot and steal the vehicle.” The following information was circulated in order to avoid theft of motor vehicles: > Make sure you park your car in a secure place. > Do not park your car on the road verges or vacant lots. > When your car is parked inside your premises, ensure that the gates are locked at all times. > Make it a point to check your vehi-

cle at regular intervals. > Report any suspicious people loitering around to the police as soon as possible. > Install a gear locker, steering locker, vehicle alarm, vehicle immobiliser or a vehicle tracker as it is easier to trace your vehicle when it is stolen. > Do not leave any valuables in the

car as this may entice criminal elements. > Ensure that your vehicle is locked when you are going out even if you are not going to be long. > Do not keep the vehicle logbook inside the car. This initiative was well received by the community.

Acupuncture treats chronic back pain and cramps B

ACK pain is quite a common problem these days, affecting people of all age groups. Back pain has many different forms, such as upper, lower and middle back pain. CAUSES OF BACK PAIN Back muscles may get strained due to incorrect posture while standing, sleeping or sitting for long periods, excessive body weight, and repetitive bending or lifting of heavy objects. A slipped disc is another condition which is responsible for back pain. This happens when the cartilage discs of the vertebrae wear out and press on a nerve root. If the sciatica nerve root, located in the lower spine region, gets pressed, then it leads to chronic lower back pain that often extends to the legs and is accompanied by numbness. Elderly people often suffer from chronic back pain due to osteoarthritis affecting

the spine. Chronic back pain may also be triggered by stress and anxiety. Emotional stress causes disc degeneration or herniation. Prolonged emotional stress creates a sympathetic dominant state in the autonomic nervous system and leads to decreased blood flow to most of the organs, muscles and peripheral tissues. When blood flow to the lumber muscles is decreased, the muscles become tight and are easily fatigued. TREATMENT WITH ACUPUNCTURE Acupuncture enhances blood circulation, especially in the area where there is pain or discomfort. When circulation in the tissue improves, muscle relaxation occurs and immediate pain reduction occurs in many cases. In some other cases, when circulation improves, the pain in the affected area intensifies and is then followed by the

ADVERTORIAL

repair of tissue and muscle relaxation. Proper circulation in the tissue is important not only for blood to nourish the tissue but also to enhance the elimination of muscle fatigue and pain-causing substances (eg. lactic acid), thus resulting in healthy tissue. Acupuncture, cupping therapy and therapeutic massage offer relief for back pain. Acupuncture can help you lead a painfree life naturally without side effects. For a consultation, call doctor of Chinese medicine, Dr Meena Kasim at 032 944 2761, 031 207 3620, 082 786 4127 or 082 786 4087. WHAT IS A CATARACT? Cataract is a term used to describe the clouding of the natural lens of the eye. A clouded lens can be compared to a window that is frosted or “fogged” with steam. When the lens becomes cloudy, the light reaching the retina is blurred and distorted, and your vision is affected. This clouded lens is called a cataract, and it must be removed before vision can be restored. Cataracts are not cancerous. They can be treated with a surgical procedure performed in theatre done routinely by Dr Naidoo. TYPES OF CATARACTS The two most common types of cataracts are: . The cortical cataract . The posterior sub capsular cataract. Depending on the type of cataract, the patients will experience different vision problems, but the most common symptoms include: . Blurring vision . Sensitivity to light or glare . Double vision in one eye . Poor night vision . Needing brighter light to read . Experiencing fading or yellowing of colours Should you experience any of these symptoms and would like to know more, contact the Tongaat Eye Centre or Dr Naidoo at 032 945 0007.

JAPAN’S two time world karate champion Murakami Manabu will be touring the country for the next seven days teaching his special brand of traditional karate. “Master Murakami’s knowledge, experience and wisdom is second to none,” said South Africa’s karate legend Sonny Pillay Hanshi. The much sought after master of Shotokan style of karate Manabu who travels to an average of forty countries annually will conduct a Masters Camp on advanced kumite (fight-

ing) and kata (forms) techniques at the Tongaat Sports Centre from April 26 to 29. The camp is open to all karate enthusiasts associated with Karate South Africa (KSA) and has been organised by seasoned Protea head coach Brando Pillay Shihan. The visiting Japanese maestro will also preside as chief guest of honour over the coming weekends Kanazawa Cup tournament being hosted by the Skisa karate organisation at the Tongaat Sports Centre on April 28. As a matter of interest master Manabu is expected to do his special self-defence demo against multiple opponents at the Kanazawa Cup, Skisa’s

flagship annual tournament. Founder of Skisa, Pillay Hanshi expressed his delight at having Manabu at Skisa KZN run by head of KSA technical affairs Pillay Shihan. “Master Murakami is one of the leading karate teachers in the world today. It is a major scoop for Skisa to host him for the eighteenth year in succession in the kingdom and I expect a record number of karateka (senior karate leaders) to attend the masters technical workshop/Kanazawa Cup,” Pillay Hanshi said. Pillay Hanshi added that they will use the masters technical workshops as preparation for their Shotokan Karate International Championships in 2019 being hosted in Europe (Prague).
