Dear Readers, TODAY marks the end of another year for the Hillcrest Fever, and as the festivities kick off for this season, let us reflect on moments that touched our lives and the community this past year. 2014 has been marked by persistent challenges in our economy with price inflations (food, electricity, fuel, etc.). We had weather catastrophes and crime

continues to destroy some of our communities. However, the one thing that continues to stand undefeated is the spirit of the Upper Highway community. Through the difficult times, our readers have once again proven that we are, without a doubt, among the most resilient and strong-willed. We have weathered all the storms that came our way and have demonstrated that we can be a community to be proud of - from our disabled horse rider achieving his goals to a local woman beating breast cancer and becoming an inspiration to others - our community stands together proud! We are confident that 2015 will be better than ever. We, at The Hillcrest Fever, have faced our

own challenges this year, but as we enter 2015 we renew our pledge to you to do our very best to continue to be the most accurate, fair and balanced source of news, opinion, features, sports and entertainment in the Upper Highway Area. We will continue to be open and honest with our readers and we assure you that the new year will be one never to be forgotten. Our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones this year and those experiencing difficulties of all types this holiday season. We extend sincere and warm wishes to our Hillcrest Fever family for a safe and peaceful festive season, and a happy and prosperous 2015. Kalisha Naicker Senior  Journalist Hillcrest  Fever

Another child raped in Verulam ANDILE SITHOLE >>Andile.sithole@media24.com

A

NOTHER child (10) has become a rape victim in less than a week after an eight-year old girl was reportedly raped in Verulam. According to the Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa), the suspect, who is the victim’s stepfather, has been allegedly raping her for the past five years, following the death of the child’s mother, his wife. On Monday, June 11 residents heard about the incident and approached the suspect. The angry residents then broke into his house and assaulted him. When officers from Reaction Unit South Africa arrived at the suspect’s house, it is alleged that used condoms were found at the scene. Operations manager Vinod Singh said: “A neighbour found used condoms in the suspect’s home. She questioned the child who said that she was being raped by her stepfather since her mother’s death five years ago. “The child went on to explain that she and her stepfather had moved to Verulam from Johannesburg in December last year. “He had sealed all the windows in their home and held her captive in the house while he was at work,” Singh said. Singh said the victim was not attending school. “He had also asked her to sleep with other men to subsidise his income as a mechanic.” When residents entered his home several sex toys, lingerie and pornographic videos were found. “The child admitted that the sex toys were used on her. The suspect was placed under

arrest at the Verulam SAPS,” Singh said. The accused was taken to Osindisweni Hospital, however he escaped custody on Tuesday. The police could not comment on how the suspect escaped from the hospital. Rusa circulated the suspect’s photo on Facebook and he was arrested in Phoenix later that day. Social work supervisor at the Verulam Child and Family Welfare Society Mala Pather urged the community to report child abuse to

the authorities. “We ask the community to be more vigilant and to be our ears and eyes in the community. You must report child abuse to the authorities so that all the complaints will be investigated,” Pather said. Police spokesperson Captain Thembeka Mbhele said: “We can confirm that a case of rape and sexual assault was opened at Verulam police station and it has been transferred to Phoenix FCS for investigation. A stepfather

was arrested for repeatedly raping a 10-year old victim. He will be charged and will appear in court soon.” Last week, a case of a 48-year-old man who was accused of raping his eight-year old niece was adjourned at the Verulam Magistrate’s court until June 28. The suspect will be sent for mental evaluation to determine if he is mentally disturbed. He will be held at Westville Prison until his next appearance in court.

Tongaat Crematorium standstill

The The premises premises of of the the Tongaat Tongaat Crematorium. Crematorium. PHOTO: PHOTO: ANDILE ANDILE SITHOLE SITHOLE

ANDILE SITHOLE >>Andile.sithole@media24.com

T

HERE is an ongoing outcry from members of the public over the termination of services at the Tongaat Crematorium. The furnace of the 43-year old crematorium has not been working since May 23. Local residents who want to cremate their love ones said they have to travel to Verulam or use other nearby private crematoriums.

A concerned resident from Shakaskraal who refused to be named said: “I came to the crematorium last Sunday and found out that it was not working. We had to borrow the money from other people to transport relatives to Verulam where the body was cremated. “We were not informed that there was a problem at the crematorium. We are mourning and didn’t want additional stress,” he said. Other residents complained about

burial costs incurred when they discovered that the crematorium was closed. Superintendent Kevin Appalsamy from the Tongaat Crematorium said the situation at the crematorium is beyond their control. “It’s a mechanical problem. The machine that we use to cremate has been used since 1973. “The machine was imported from India back in the day. The company that imported the machine has li-

quated. We are trying our best to repair the machine,” Appalsamy said. He said they are currently looking for suppliers complying with the chain management policy to give them a new machine. “The council has been informed about the situation at the crematorium. We hope, after a week or so, that the crematorium will be up and running again. In the interim we urge the public to use private crematoriums. EThekwini Municipality owns only

two crematoriums, one in Mobeni and Tongaat. We are following the procedure to have the machine repaired. We therefore appeal to the community to be patient while we are working on this matter,” Appalsamy said. Appalsamy said the crematorium was not closed and confirmed that it will be opened to the public soon. Ward councillor Zanele Khumalo said she was aware of the matter and said council was working on it.

Reaction Unit SA crime report BIKER CRASHES INTO TRUCK: TRENANCE PARK Members of Reaction Unit SA (Rusa) were dispatched to Inanda Road, to the entrance of Trenance Park, Verulam, after receiving reports of a motor vehicle collision. Upon arrival at the scene, a 26-yearold Inanda resident was found to have sustained a head injury after his bike collided into the back of a flat bed truck that slowed down for a speed bump. Medics treated the biker on scene before transporting him to Osindisweni Hospital in a stable condition. His Gomoto 125cc motor bike was extensively damaged. The occupants of the truck were not injured. TWO INJURED IN KING SHAKA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT COLLISION Two people were hospitalised following a collision on the M65 in the vicinity of King Shaka International Airport, Tongaat, earlier this week. The Rusa Tongaat Operations Centre received multiple calls from passing

motorists reporting the collision. Upon arrival, members of Reaction Unit South Africa found that the driver of a Nissan NP 200 bakkie and the driver of a VW Golf 5 GTi had sustained injuries. The two were treated on scene before being transported to hospital by ambulance. It is alleged that the Nissan NP 200 bakkie was in the process of a making a U-turn when the VW Golf collided with it. THEFT SUSPECT ARRESTED: VERULAM A 19-year-old theft suspect was arrested by members of Rusa after he and an accomplice had allegedly stolen scaffolding from their place of employment recently. While on patrol on Todd Street, Reaction officers noticed the two men pushing a trolley with the scaffolding. When they noticed the officers approaching one of the men fled. Rusa members apprehended the accomplice, who provided different

versions as to how he had obtained the metal objects in his possession. Upon investigation it was established that the suspect was employed at a construction site in the Verulam CBD. They had stolen the scaffolding and were on their way to the scrap yard to sell the stolen goods when they were intercepted. The suspect was placed under arrest and handed over to police. Local police are investigating the incident. VEHICLE CRASHES INTO SCHOOL FENCE: EVEREST HEIGHTS Two women escaped without injury after the vehicle they were travelling in crashed into a concrete fence at a Primary School in Everest Heights recently. Members of Rusa were on patrol in the area when they came across the incident. The driver of the Mercedes Benz explained that while travelling on Austin Avenue, she became blinded by the rays of the sun and lost control of her

vehicle which then crashed through the school fence. The front of the vehicle was extensively damaged. The school was closed at the time of the accident. 16-YEAR-OLD PUPIL STABBED: PHOENIX A sixteen-year-old boy was injured after he was stabbed in the thigh by another pupil during a fight at a school in Phoenix earlier this week. Members of Rusa were dispatched to the school after receiving a call from a teacher reporting the incident. As a Rusa patrol vehicle approached the scene three individuals fled from the school premises. Reaction Officers apprehended a 13year-old pupil while two of his accomplices managed to evade arrest. The 13-year-old was found in possession of an Okapi pocket knife that was allegedly used in the stabbing. While being interviewed, the boy claimed that he was asked to keep the

knife with him following the stabbing. It is alleged that the victim was assaulted by the suspect after he prevented him from stealing a bag from a female pupil. The 13-year-old told Rusa that as the victim exited the school premises he was accosted by the older boy and three of his friends who were from another school in the Phoenix area. During the altercation, the 17-yearold drew a knife and stabbed the grade 10 pupil in the thigh while his accomplices allegedly assaulted him. The knife was then handed to the 13year-old. During the interview he pointed out the 17-year-old who was then apprehended by officers. The victim proceeded to a local clinic for medical attention. The suspect was handed over to police for further investigation. For more updates, follow Reaction Unit SA (Rusa) on Facebook

The motive of the attack is still not known.”

Mother arrested for child neglect A MOTHER (32) of two from Umbhayi informal settlement appeared at the Verulam Magistrate’s court on Friday, May 7, after her child went missing last week. The woman is accused of failing to pick up her children from a crèche. The police arrested the suspect at her place of work on Monday, June 4. It is alleged that the mother of the child

dropped her three-year-old child at a crèche at Umbhayi area and did not come back to fetch her. Police spokesperson in Tongaat Captain Patrick Ngwane said: “In the afternoon the owner of the crèche saw that nobody came to fetch the child since the child was alone and all the other children were gone. The woman never returned to fetch the child.

The owner of the crèche went to the child’s residence to look for her parents. On arrival she found that the house was locked and no one was in the house. She made inquiries and was told by the neighbours that nobody had seen her over the weekend,” Ngwane said. Ngwane said the owner of the crèche tried to contact the father and could not find him. “She reported the matter to area SAPS Tongaat sector commander Sergeant ZP Mkhwanazi who then mobilised the police

and the community to conduct a search. While searching, the suspect’s second child (11) was found loitering in the informal settlement. “An investigation revealed that the child had been seen by the community loitering in the informal settlement over the weekend and was not taken care of,” Ngwane added. Police followed up on information that the mother was seen on Monday rushing to work. The police proceeded to look for the mother of the two children at her place of em-

ployment. She was found and, when asked by police about the child abandonment, she failed to give the police a satisfactory reason about why she had abandoned the children. A case of child abandonment was opened and the woman was arrested. She was detained at SAPS Tongaat police cells. The station commander Colonel Santha Moodley commended Sergeant Mkhwanazi for her commitment and dedication for ensuring that the children are protected. - Supplied.

Child abuse awareness raised SUPPLIED

M

EMBERS of the Verulam Social Crime prevention unit recently held a crime awareness day at Waterloo Sports centre for children from the Waterloo crèche, initiated by Constable Nkosini. More than 200 children, teachers and care givers from local crèches attended the event.

The event coincided with child protection week. Guest speakers were present from Department of Health, Thuthuzela Care Centre, Child Line and guest speaker from the Tongaat Hullet group. SAPS Verulam spokesperson Captain Henry Kisten said: “The children were taught about child abuse and the importance of education. Pamphlets were distributed to the community.”

al-Fitr, a festival that marks the end of Ramadan this week. Here’s what you need to know about the holiday celebrated by over a billion people around the world. IT’S HELD TO CELEBRATE THE END OF FASTING During the month of Ramadan, Muslims fast from sun up to sundown to honour the month that the Quran was revealed to the Prophet Mohammed. Eid al-Fitr celebrates the end of the month —and the end of the fasting. The prolonged fasting isn’t just about food — it also includes abstaining from taking medications, drinking any liquids (including water), smoking, and having sex. Spoil Dad this Father’s Day ADVERTORIAL

What is tooth whitening?

WHITER teeth are the desire of many. To understand whitening, one needs to understand how teeth stain. Teeth are protected by an outer layer of enamel that serves as a barrier against plaque infiltration and gives our teeth a whiter appearance. Enamel is made of hydroxy appetite crystals

that form microscopic hexagonal rods, thus the enamel layer is porous which can allow staining agents to work their way down into the tooth. When we put stuff in our mouth through eating, cigarette smoking, tea/coffee, beetle nut chewing, etc, another layer forms on top of the enamel layer which can be simply removed by good dental hygiene and regular scaling and polishing by the dental professional, however when that layer sets on the teeth for a prolonged period, the foreign material gets into the enamel and this is when teeth whitening can be effective. Teeth whiteners use bleaching agents to get down into the enamel and set off a chemical reaction that removes the staining compounds. Northwick Dental Centre invites you for a dental assessment and an oral hygiene programme tailored to your family’s needs. — Dental Surgeon Dr Sudhir Rathiram ( BDT UKZN-Westville, BDS Medunsa)

THE Thekwini Municipality’s One City One Book programme is a landmark event that celebrates the literary works of eThekwini-based literary artists. The programme is based on eThekwini’s ingrained belief that a literate society is an empowered society. On May 17, the World Museum Day, in keeping with its innovative approach to programme delivery, the One City One Book project took its next definitive step towards elevating the written word to the fine arts. The Durban City Hall Art Gallery played host to the very first depiction of the written word in paint. Twenty-five fine arts students of the eThekwini College were honoured with their paintings adorning gallery four in an exhibition that is to be on display for the next five weeks. The 25 original pieces were inspired by Dr Bhoowan Singh’s novel, When The Chalk Is Down – An Odyssey. One of the artists in attendance had come in from as far as Pongola, reflecting exactly how important this initiative is for budding artists who have thus been introduced to the world through such an acknowledge-

ment. Senior manager at eThekwini Library Services Tebogo Mzizi articulated her happiness at the success of such a bold initiative by her department and the municipality. Mzizi said they went to great lengths to indicate the combined appreciation to the artists, eThekwini College Fine Arts Department, her team leads of Thevan Harry and Thulani Makhaye, for the excellent work done with such innovation, which provided impetus to the municipality’s being chosen as the Unesco City of Literature for 2018. Head of Parks, Recreation and Culture unit Thembinkosi Ngcobo said: “The promotion of literacy and the arts is a critical mandate of the eThekwini Municipality.” Ngcobo said he was touched by the fact that they have provided a platform for the 25 South African artists hailing from eThekwini Municipality. Ngcobo said: “Our acknowledgement of their original pieces will be truly realised when their work takes centre stage on the global arena, and for posterity,” he said. “I must also laud Singh for the nature and content of his novel, more so since it has been a catalyst to these artists, as well as to the next level of added value to the One City One OM SAI RAM Book project. It is our intention to continue to 10 & 13 Day Memorial Service evolve in like manner,” of the Late Ngcobo added. Singh indicated that MR POORAN SUREDIN (Jimmy) he was humbled and touched that his work had been acknowledged in such a manner. Singh said: “There have been a number of firsts attributed to this piece [the novel], and the fact that I have been able to, albeit in a small way, contribute towards ex30/11/1936 - 05/06/2018 posing the world to our South African talent is inDATE: 16 June 2018 (Saturday) & valuable to me. 19 June 2018 (Tuesday) “Their journeys have VENUE: 13 Canyon Place, Riverview, Verulam just begun .” TIME: 08.00am For further information visit www.whentheRemembered by family, relatives and friends. chalkisdown.com. Local boy to represent SA in Botswana A

FINAL year student from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Edgewood Campus, Avikar Ramcharan (20) is set to make his dreams come true when he represents the Universities of South Africa (USSA) team in Gaborone, Botswana, next week. The team will take on other university teams in Gaborone from June 17 to June 22 in a fiercely contested championship to determine the African Champions in tertiary education. Ramcharan, an attacking front line spiker and an extra ordinary middle block, started his volleyball at a young age, under the watchful eye of coach Tito Moodley, at what has become known as the school of Volleyball, Trubel Primary School. At the tender age of eight, he was a ball boy travelling with the excelling school teams to various tournaments. His opportunity arose in Grade seven when he captained the school team who emerged as Tonver champions. He was also selected captain of the Tonver team that excelled in the Friendship Games for the next five years. In 2007, he had his provincial call up that triggered a number of provincial caps. He was the youngest member

(at age 12) that brought gold to KZN. At Belverton Secondary, he captained the U14, U16 and U19 Volleyball team that won gold. In 2012 he represented KZN in the Inter-Provincial Tournament held in Durban. In the same year he represented the club – G.R.SPORTS – as the youngest school boy player to play in the Volleyball South Africa Inter Club Championships held in Johannesburg and was runners-up. In 2013, he captained the school team that participated in the National School Sports Competition in Bloemfontein. The team was placed third in the country. Ramcharan was also the youngest player to participate in the KZN Super League. In 2014,he captained the Belverton School team that won gold in the Tonver Gamesl Finals and received the MVP award again. He also went on to captain the school team in the Department of Education Circuit Managers Cup and brought gold as well as the MVP award. He had the rare honour of being the sportsboy at both Primary and Secondary School and obtained the Most Valuable Player award in all tournaments. In wishing him well in his South African debut, his

Praveen Sewnarain displays his medal received in Comrades Marathon.

LOCAL athletes from the Verulam Athletic club participated in the Comrades Marathon last Sunday and received medals. Team VAC was led by novice runner Sipho Silangwe in a Bill Rowan medal time of 8.08. Vukani Maphumulo, who achieved his 10th Comrades finish medal, thus earning the coveted Green number in 8.37, credited his training schedule and immense sacrifice he has made this year. Maphumulo remains a valued member of team VAC and, in the run up to the event, provided invaluable support for team VAC novices and communication crew for Comrades. Walter Mthembu, last year’s back to back finisher, received his third medal in a courageous 9.59 finish despite almost losing out on his chance to compete in the marathon after a knee injury and late substitution. Praveen Sewnarain delivered on his ninth consecutive Comrades finish with an easypaced enjoyable finish to received his bronze medal.

mentor , teacher and coach, Tito Moodley, said: “Avikar is an excellent example of a well-developed, all-round go getter. His achievement on both the academic and sporting fields is in line of Trubel’s motto of achieving academically as well sporting excellence. He is a fine example of a student who has passion and has persevered in the game. Well done and Congratulations.” His selection in the National University team comes as no surprise to his Secondary School manager, J.S.Moodley. “Avi, as he was fondly known at Belverton Secondary, was a role model. “Being both the captain of the school and district team, as well as excelling in your games, calls for a splendid talent. “Avikar always rose to that challenge. We know that even greater opportunities are to come his way. We, at Belverton Secondary, want to wish him well in Gaborone, Botswana,” Moodley said. The Tonver Schools Sports Council, which provides the training ground as well as the springboard for exceptional pupils, joins others in applauding a young man who has shown passion and determination over the years — a true ambassador of School Sports. - Supplied.
