hello, everyone ! Born and raised in Jakarta, I am an interdisciplinary designer who currently resides in Vancouver, BC, Canada with having interest in industrial design, communication design, and philosophy. Recently, I graduated with a Bachelor of Design, Industrial Design major with a minor in Social Practice and Community Engagement from Emily Carr University of Art + Design. My practice revolves around social change and speculative design. I like to inspect the value of things, culture, ideology and social systems, taking a closer look at problems that are considered insignificant.

I believe that things which are essentials are invisible to the eye. For me, good design is not only about providing solutions. design should also make us think, talk, and question. At its core, design prompts self-reflection, igniting the imagination and affecting social change. Therefore, I find it important to have immersive research in my design process to build connections and empathy through the power of storytelling.

how important

is the role of aromas in our life?

essentia

is wearable jeweller y that explores the role of scent in human well-being. It allows a person to apply aromas to maintain and improve one’s welfare.

concept Essentia strives to address the underlying and layered value of the human sense of smell in the current daily unimportance of our olfactory sense. It encourages the public to trust their primitive “mute instinct to navigate and improve their well-being -while exploring the power of aromas and memory. The aim of essentia is to identify the potential effect and use posed by aromas derrived from everyday objects. To this, smell offers enriched possibilities for human experience. The goal is to create user experience that combines scientific knowledge, technology, and the olfactory sense.

the juxtaposition

senses vs technology Smell is largely considered insignificant in our world today.

12

Yet, we forget that our olfactory sense has been helping us to mate, eat and survive whose evolution goes back to prehistoric times. As this time primarily emphasizes new technology, we have become numb with our sense of smell. Essentia bridges the gap between our olfactory sense, technology and our well-being by identifying the potential effect and value posed by aromas.

the connection

aromas and wellbeing Smell connects us with our memory -either it’s a good or a bad one. Aromas have the power to instantly take us back to reliving a moment that gives us comfort or sense of home and place.

14

In the middle of the everyday chaos of our contemporary environment, people are stressed more easily. We all are familiar with depression, anxiety and panic attack - that might vary due to various and different reasons. Essentia offers a possibility to apply aromas in order to create a calm, and a safe space. Perhaps, our mute sense has a crucial role to transform and achieve a better balance and sense of well-being every time we feel lost, stress or disconnected.

gender neutral jewellery

The design of the wearable is centered around simplicity, accessible material, and gender neutrality.

15

The aesthetics take inspiration from Bauhaus philosophy, positive-negative elements of shape + form, and experimenting with 3d printed materials. This design space can be speculative, critical and a testing ground for ideas and development.

Wear it around your neck

Let it detect your heart beat through the sensor in the necklace tension

If your hear beat turns into high ( > 110 BPM) , your necklace will send signal to the main component.

The signal will trigger Essentia to release the aroma - the chosen smell

Let the aromas slow your reduce your stress level.

// Note : > 110 BPM or higher is proven to be equal with high stress level. It might indicate that someone suffers a pannic attack , or an uncomfortable situation.

aromas

20

Most of the time we only value what’s in fronts of our eyes, however, something that is invisible can create a powerful impact as well. There is something missing in how we create relationships with smell and how smell can affect our everyday. Right for the moment we’re in our mother’s belly, our life is guided by smell. From the moment we are sperm, its ability to smell that guides its way to the ovula. The pleasure of smell is intrinsically related to our survival instincts. It is as if the pleasure of smelling was the powerful way to tell us what’s good for us. It is not just pleasure, just for pleasure. It is a way to survive. We could not survive without our sense of smell telling us what is good and bad for us. In fact, it is the one sense where we lose control, of which each breathe sends uncensored information to the brain.

Scent Library was made to facilitate people in choosing the quality and type of aromas. Each number encapsulates a different moment/ memory that will affect people’s well-being through the extraction of smell.

02 A heart beat sensor is located at the necklace area , which will send a signal to the main part of essentia after the BPM exceeds 110. The locking system between necklace and essentia will carry the information from the sensor and giving it into the circuit board inside the component.

heartbeat interaction + 3D print

How do we capture memory ? Different smells encapsulate different memories. This exploration was made to test the limit in preserving scent into a man-made object by using jasmonite and several materials which contained essence of aromas in them (egg shells, metal powder, leaves, etc)

By using the distillation process, essentia was successful to create a mini scent library. Each smell was extracted from everyday objects. It comes from the “unusual “ material that we use to consider unable to carry aromas.

The exploration went into creating and developing a prototype with an arduino, a heart rate sensor and a motor component that reacts through the code. The number 110 BPM will activate the motor to spray the bottle. The images beside shows an exploration of shape and material using 3D Print technology.
