The Interactive Irish! – A Finnish View A Finnish lesson would begin with the teacher holding up a mobile phone & asking everyone to turn his or hers off for the duration of the lesson. The teacher as the person with the knowledge would give the lesson without interruption, allowing a brief question time at the end; interaction is not encouraged during a class, interruptions are a definite no-no! An Irish class begins with interaction between teacher & student; there is lively discussion with each learning from the other. The Photoshop course with Bernie O’Reilly has been fun even though there is, & has been so much to learn. I had no idea that one could do so much to manipulate photographs in fact I’ll never look at a professional photo again without wondering what has been taken out, put in or airbrushed. Bernie is a very enthusiastic teacher with a marvellous way of imparting information painlessly. There has been interaction in abundance, something that I have personally enjoyed. It’s good not to flounder alone in the depths of uncertainty when one is slow in assimilating information & instead share information with teacher & fellow students & help each other. It ‘s very uplifting to know that others can also have trouble ‘getting it’ immediately. In Finland, during the mid lesson break the learners sip their coffee in silence. In Ireland the coffee break is a great social occasion, where everyone gets to know each other. All topics are up for discussion. Overall, the Finns are not a talkative nation & would perhaps find an interactive class as difficult to cope with as Irish students would find a teacher-dominated, non interactive class. The Woman’s Way team were tasked to develop new skills – see the fruits of their labours.... By Pauline Dunne Woman’s Way, January 23, 2012

When I told a friend that I was starting pottery classes she got very excited and started reminiscing about that particular scene from Ghost – I had to stop her right there. We didn’t use pottery wheels in this particular class and Patrick Swayze was certainly nowhere to be seen. Instead we moulded the clay with our hands, and with the help of our teacher Tony Bird (a man of great talent and also a great storyteller), we each crafted our very own cottage. When I proudly showed a friend my finished piece she was very impressed and even went so far as to say, “That’s the kind of thing an American would pay €20 for in a gift shop.” Now if I really took her comment to heart and tried to flog my little clay cottage on some unsuspecting tourist I'd probably have to give Tony a cut of the profit because without his help it would still be an abandoned lump of clay gone wrong. He showed each of us how that by pushing the clay through a kitchen sieve we could make something which resembled grass and, by simply scratching a few lines into the roof, it would give the illusion of being thatched. Once we’d finshed building our cottages, Tony put them all into a kiln to be fired and to take all the water out of the clay. Once this is done it’s time for the glazing. Glazing, for all intents and purposes, is the same as painting. The only difference is that while you are doing , you have to hope to God that the ‘butter yellow’ you’re lashing on your thatched roof actually is in fact yellow, and not green, or some other colour. Because it’s glaze as opposed to paint – you can’t see the colours very well when you first put them on, and you have to put three layers on to ensure the depth of colour and that your piece is nice and shiny. Once you’ve finished glazing your piece, you stick it in the kiln again and it’s only when you take it out that you can really see what colour your cottage is. Thankfully I didn’t go too astray with the colours (even though what was meant to be grass is slightly more yellow than intended). So my cottage is sitting proudly on the mantelpiece at home and I can point it out to any visitors that might come a knocking. After I’d finished my cottage I felt like a master potter; I had quickly forgotten that I never would have made my cottage had it not been for Tony’s help, and so I got to work on making what every self respecting potter can make – a vase. l used the coiling method, 12

where you get long tubes of clay and coil them around in the shape of a vase. I got carried away though and ruined it a little bit. Then when it came to glazing my colour choice wasn’t the best (it looked like vomit). All in all, my vase is the type of thing that only a mother could love, and she does too. lt has pride of place on the mantelpiece - though l won't be admitting to being its creator should any visitors stop and ask. After my vase disaster I made a clay dog, a jar, another cottage type thing, a photo frame and an angel candle holder for Christmas. Every time I finish making one I imagine that one day, my grandchildren will find them and think, “Wasn’t Nanny very talented altogether?” and of course they'll be wrong but won’t it be a lovely sentimental moment for them? My pottery classes each Monday night were a nice break from reality. It was two hours in the week when I could forget about everything else that was going on and just focus on something entirely different. On my first class Tony told us how he had asked a pupil from the year before if she had enjoyed the class and she replied ‘Yes I did, it saved me a fortune in therapy!’ and I think that explains it perfectly. It's a great stress reliever, and the satisfaction you get when something you've been working on for weeks comes out of the kiln looking good is like nothing else. I'd recommend a night class in pottery to anyone who wants to make new friends and have a solid piece of work to show for it at the end of it all. I did my pottery class in Scoil Mhuire, Clane, Co. Kildare . If you would like to sign up for their next batch of classes visit www.cIanesm.com or call 045 868255 for more information.
