Bordeaux 2000

In 2000, Bordeaux saw dicey weather at first, with spells of cold and heat that left vintners chewing their fingernails with worry that grapes would molder on the vine. Then, two months of perfect sun ripened the vineyards, drawing out the concentrated essence brought on by the summer’s tumultuous first months. Scant rain forced vines to express their full voices. With this lot, you take home 60 bottles of Bordeaux’s legendary 2000 vintage, including three bottles of the amazing Baron Philippe de Rothschild Chateau Clerc-Milon Pauillac, two bottles of the Chateau Beychevelle Saint-Julien, and three bottles of the Chateau Talbot Saint-Julien. This is a library of Bordeaux of which collectors dream. Don’t miss the opportunity to make it yours. This package will be sold as one lot and includes 60 bottles. TO TAKE HOME THIS EVENING:

Legendary Burgundy

Ever since the 14th century when Duke Philip the Bold denigrated “vile and disloyal Gamay” and praised Burgundian Pinot Noir in its stead, issuing decrees to protect it, wine lovers have always held a special place in their heart for these dry, elegant wines. Maybe it’s the independent spirit of Burgundy’s winemakers, or maybe it’s simply the wine’s sensuality, but we suspect that people who adore Burgundy are a little more discerning, and more likely than others to live life to the fullest. (Hey, they didn’t call him Philip the Bold for nothing). This lot of eleven superstar Burgundies includes a 1972 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti worth more than many people’s automobiles. The Romanée-Conti vineyards are worked with horses and grapes harvested and sorted by hand, according to the phases of the moon, to produce a wine that critic Clive Coates calls “The scarcest, most expensive— and frequently the best—wine in the world.” Take home these carefully aged Burgundies and look forward to some delicious evenings. This package will be sold as one lot and includes 11 bottles. TO TAKE HOME THIS EVENING:

Domaine Drouhin Oregon 2014 OREGON WINE AMBASSADOR

One couple will enjoy a full season of Domaine Drouhin Oregon, from seeing the vines’ first green shoots in the spring, though the excitement of harvest in the fall. The Drouhin family’s winemaking roots run deep, having taken hold in Burgundy’s best vineyards more than a century ago. In 1987, Robert Drouhin was invited to participate in the first International Pinot Noir Celebration, and on that trip, he decided to purchase land in the Dundee Hills. Where there had only been Christmas trees and wheat, the Drouhin’s began planting their first vineyards in Oregon. At the same time, Robert asked Véronique to be the winery’s new winemaker, and her brother Philippe Drouhin took responsibility for viticulture. In 1988, DDO produced its first vintage, from purchased grapes, and in 1989 built its landmark, four-story gravity flow winery. The rest is history. The winner of this package will get to know Domaine Drouhin year-round! First of all, you'll go to the head of the line to become a member of Domaine Drouhin Oregon’s wine club, including an allocation of the Pinot Noir Louise, for which there is now a 3 1/2 year waiting list. The fun starts immediately, because you're invited to the special Louise release party on March 8th. In August, you’ll attend a Plate & Pitchfork dinner at Domain Drouhin, where you’ll be treated to a spectacular dinner sourced from the verdant surrounding farms—and vineyards, naturally. Continue your experience with one night at the scenic Domain Drouhin Oregon estate guest house in Yamhill County. From your charming home base, you’ll spend the next day touring local wineries, as well as savoring a private tour and tasting of Domain Drouhin itself. When harvest comes, you’ll discuss that year’s vintages with winemaker Véronique Drouhin over a Harvest Lunch. Bring a bottle of DDO’s 1st vintage to share and bring another couple, as well. And, of course, harvest wouldn’t be complete without a place at the table at Domaine Drouhin’s celebrated Oregon Harvest Dinner. In February 2015, you'll be on the list for DDO's fabulous Valentine's event, For The Love of Wine. Tonight, you'll take home a 3 liter of 2012 Domaine Drouhin Oregon Dundee Hills Pinot Noir and 9 bottles of the 1st vintage of Domaine Drouhin from 1988. With this package you can anticipate the coming year, the new friends, and the wonderful wines you’ll experience. This package will be sold as one lot for two people.

Cirque du Soleil: Totem

An evening experiencing the Cirque du Soleil is always an unforgettable occasion. So, on Thursday, May 1, 2014, why not step it up with an unforgettable pre-party? Cirque du Soleil’s Totem traces the fascinating journey of the human species from its original amphibian state to its ultimate desire to fly—as always, told with stunning costumes, original storytelling, and the breathtaking choreography that sets apart Cirque du Soleil’s performances from any others. Inspired by many founding myths, Totem illustrates through a visual and acrobatic language the evolutionary progress of Earth’s species. The Toronto Star deemed Totem, “Spectacular, artful. Breathtaking and deliciously ironic.” The Boston Globe agreed, adding that “Totem is visually ravishing.” You’ll start your evening at the Red Lion Jantzen Beach “Red Lion on the River” with a pre-function cocktail party. The Red Lion will cater you with heavy hors d’oeuvres and wine from Et Fille Wines. Roundtrip transportation will get you to and from the Portland Expo Center from the Red Lion. The Wine Spectator Top 100

In November 2013, the Wine Spectator published its list of the top 100 wines in the world. Oenophiles waited on the edge of their seats for this list. Could they buy these wines, taste them? Would they be impossible to find? Maybe you wondered yourself. No sweat. We’ve done the work for you and pulled together 51 bottles of 36 of these top wines for you to savor at your leisure. No calling wine merchants across the country, no biting your lip as you hope you’ll be able to snag a bottle or two of wines that collectors worldwide are snapping up. We bet you thought you wouldn’t be able to land a bottle of the 2010 Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf-du-Pape. How about that bottle of 2010 Lewis Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon that the winery sadly reports is sold out? Got it. And the 2010 Quilceda Creek that Robert Parker raved about? Yep. It’s here, too. In short, win this package, and you’ll relish the best the world has to offer. This package will be sold as one lot and includes 51 bottles. TO TAKE HOME THIS EVENING:

Happy Birthday Woodward Canyon! 2014 WASHINGTON WINE AMBASSADOR

We’re all in favor of celebrating birthdays in a big way, and this year the Walla Walla appellation turns the big 3-0! Two couples will toast the anniversary with some of Walla Walla’s best wines, from one of Walla Walla’s premier wineries, Woodward Canyon. (We’d be remiss if we didn’t note that Woodward Canyon was the Classic Wines Auction’s first Washington Wine Ambassador in 1996. Thank you!) Win this lot, and you and another couple will spend a weekend in Walla Walla with a VIP tour and tasting at Woodward Canyon, Rick’s famous wood-fired pizza lunch at the winery, plus private tours and tastings at Long Shadows Vintners, Reynvaan Family Vineyards, and Seven Hills Winery, highlighting the 30th anniversary of the Walla Walla appellation. And of course, a proper celebration includes private jet transportation between Portland and Walla Walla. The festivities continue with a five course dinner with the Smalls prepared by James Beard recognized Chef Antonio Campolio at the chef’s table at the Marcus Whitman. Enjoy it! You’ll be staying at the luxurious hotel for two nights, so there’s no need to drive afterward. In fact, there’s no need to drive at all, since you’ll have ground transportation while you’re in Walla Walla. Plus, while you are in the area, connect with NW editor of Wine Enthusiast Magazine, Paul Gregutt, for a special tasting at his home in Waitsburg, WA. Paul will pick wines from his personal cellar (and he has some nice wines). To draw out the memory of this wonderful trip, you’ll receive a one year winery membership for each couple, plus one 30th Anniversary vertical. This is already an amazing package, but there’s more! Woodward Canyon’s Darcey Fugman-Small and Rick Small will come to your house for opening of the vertical at a mutually agreeable time. Now let’s have a look at the stunning wines in the vertical: The wines featured in the vertical are Woodward Canyon’s 1981 to 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon, originally known as the “Dedication Series” and now known as the “Old Vines.” These wines have been made primarily from the same vineyards since day one, Sagemoor in the Columbia Valley and Champoux (in which the winery is a partner) in the Horse Heaven Hills. The 1987 was the first Washington wine to ever be included in the top 10 of the Wine Spectator’s Top 100 list and was ranked #10. The 1989 was ranked #56 and the 1991 was ranked #22 in their subsequent Top 100 lists. The 1995 and 1998 were included in The Wine Enthusiast’s Best of the Year listings and the 2005 was Seattle Met’s #1 of the top 100 Washington Wines. All together these wines have received 29 scores of 90+ from the Wine Spectator, The Wine Enthusiast, Robert Parker, Stephen Tanzer, and Wine and Spirits. These wines have a reputation for aging very well.

Dinner with San Antonio Spurs Coach Popovich

Taste and dine with a basketball icon and revisit nine Oregon vintages of wine that have never been available for purchase! Gregg Popovich, Coach of the San Antonio Spurs, is famous for winning NBA Championships and his laconic wit and wisdom. A serious wine enthusiast (he had to build a separate building to house his wine cellar), he has long been a part owner in A to Z Wineworks and, for his own personal and charitable use, every year A to Z crafts a special blend for him called Rock & Hammer. It has never been for sale and there has never been a vertical tasting of these wines. As Harvey Steiman asked in the Wine Spectator almost eight years ago, “Will it ever be available to the public?” No, but you could be one of the lucky few beyond Pop’s circle who will get to taste them all from 2004-2012. The name Rock & Hammer comes from a Jacob Riis’ quote in the Spurs’ facility: “When nothing seems to help, I go look at a stonecutter hammering away at his rock perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the hundred and first blow it will split in two and I know it was not that blow that did it but all that had gone before.” Coach Pop will present the vertical tasting of 2004-2012 Rock & Hammer Pinot Noir wines with Sam Tannahill, Co-Founder and Director of Winemaking and Viticulture for A to Z Wineworks adding insights into the limited edition wines. The tasting will be held at REX HILL winery and be followed by dinner in the lovely REX HILL gardens prepared by Carmen Peirano and Eric Ferguson of Nick’s Italian Cafe and Fino in Fondo. Among the guests may be New Yorker, but native Oregonian Henry Abbott, founder of ESPN’s True Hoop NBA blog. And tonight, each bidder will take home a magnum of 2012 REX HILL Willamette Valley Pinot Noir. This package will be sold for $750 per person for a maximum of 30 people, and will take place on Sunday, July 20, 2014. THIS LOT INCLUDES: ■■

California “Cult”

We had a lot of work tracking these lovelies down, but we did it for you. Yes, this lot contains 20 bottles of nearly impossible to find California Cult Cabernets. Case in point, the 2004 Screaming Eagle Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. The Wine Spectator says, “Impeccably balanced, intense and complex, with a mix of savory currant, loamy earth and firmly structured tannins. Tightens up on the finish, where the tannins clamp down, yet the finish is long and persistent.” The tasting notes of those who’ve been lucky enough to sample this wine include descriptors like “sexy,” “luscious,” and “spectacularly memorable.” And the 2006 Harlan Estate Napa Valley? Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate gave it 96 points and said, “Its dense ruby/purple color is followed by classic aromas of crème de cassis, melted licorice, smoked meats, burning embers, and graphite. It has thrown off some of the tannic clout it displayed last year, revealing great balance. A candidate for ‘wine of the vintage’.” And this is a magnum! Every wine in this remarkable lot can be described with superlatives, but let’s feature just one more, the 2010 Bryant Family Vineyard Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. The Wine Spectator awarded in 98 points, noting, “Delightfully complex, elegant, rich and subtle, with a core of ripe, spicy currant, black cherry and plum that’s pure and focused, supple and juicy, with an amazing finish that reverberates with flavor. Shows great balance, concentration and persistence.” Most of these wines are ready to drink now or cellar for up to a decade or longer. These wines have it all: great heritage, individual vision, and extreme rarity. You can’t afford not to bid on them. This package will be as one lot and includes 20 bottles. The town will be buzzing with excitement! Sure, you’ll have four tickets to the race, but that’s not all. While at the Indianapolis 500 you will be guests of the Target Chip Ganassi Racing IndyCar Series team. That’s right! Target Chip Ganassi Racing is a four-time Winner of the Indianapolis 500, a 10-time IndyCar Series Champion, and fields entries this season for 2008 Indianapolis 500 Winner and Four-Time IndyCar Series Champion Scott Dixon and reigning Indianapolis 500 winner and former IndyCar Series Champion Tony Kanaan. Wow! As the Target Chip Ganassi’s guests, you’ll get a behind-the-scenes tour of their onsite garages, million-dollar race cars, pit spaces at the track, meet team drivers and crew, plus visit their shop and racing transporters. The visit will be scheduled during race week before race day. On race day you will be provided a special treat with a ride to the track from your hotel. Not only are you able to pass all traffic and highway closures, you will be delivered to Gasoline Alley, right inside the track facility. All eyes will be on you, as people try to figure out if they saw you on Entertainment Weekly or in People. After the race you will be met at the track and taken to your hotel. That’s quite a lot of thrill for one auction package, but you’re up for it! As you contemplate this amazing vacation, you can share your signed, three-liter bottle of Andrettti Winery Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, which you’ll take home tonight. Who knows? Maybe Mario Andretti will be on hand in Indianapolis to sign you another one… This package will be sold as one lot for two couples and will take place May 22 - 26, 2014. THIS LOT INCLUDES: ■■

Gregory Grenon Featured Art

Gregory Grenon, one of the Northwest’s most recognized artists, paints emotionally charged portraits in oil on glass. Strong dark lines set off his brilliantly hued compositions. Before encasing his paintings in found frames, mirrors, or windows, Grenon flips the glass around and thus presents the viewer with the reverse image. The result is a richly layered plane of tones across a pristine, luminous surface. Grenon’s subjects are primarily women expressing emotions ranging from vulnerability, sadness, and apprehension to confidence, strength, and resolve. Grenon’s paintings express a powerful range of emotions on his behalf. They also serve as a platform to remind viewers of the significance and powerful profile of women. As he states, “I want to feel the freedom or lack of freedom of being a woman… My paintings are me talking through women, speaking up for women.” This brand new piece, completed in 2013, is titled Her Attitude is Inconvenient, and measures 67" tall by 53" wide and is oil on glass. Gregory Grenon lives and works in Portland, Oregon. His work is featured in galleries throughout the country and has been exhibited at the Museum of Northwest Art, Washington, the Paris Gibson Square Museum in Montana, the Montreal Museum of Fine Art, the Bellevue Art Museum, the Rockford Art Museum in Illinois, the Tacoma Art Museum, and the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art. Grenon has been awarded a National Endowment for the Arts Visual Arts Fellowship in Painting in addition to multiple residencies in the Pacific Northwest. Icons of Food, Wine, and Design

Win this lot and experience an evening of rare pleasure and extraordinary company. “Once in a lifetime” may have become cliché, but this lot truly defines the term. Michael Etzel farms Beaux Frères vineyards with love harvesting distinctively small yields to make natural Pinot Noirs with minimal intervention. His uncompromising approach results in well-balanced wines that beautifully reflect the character of the land and the vintage and that age exceptionally well in the bottle. No wonder then that he and partner Carey Critchlow selected Jim Cutler to design their new home. Cutler studied with Louis Kahn and mirrors Michael’s deep respect for nature, place and materials designing buildings of great repose. Enjoy an intimate, relaxed dinner with them in their new understated home, past the vineyards, nestled in a secluded forest above a pond. Joining will be Michael’s ‘beaux frères,’ Robert Parker, Jr. Parker has authored twelve best-selling books on wine since founding The Wine Advocate, the influential, independent journal that firmly established the 50-100 point rating system for scoring wine quality. Wines will be selected from Robert Parker’s personal cellar and the Beaux Frères library, a rare opportunity to taste for yourself how elegantly the Beaux Frères wines age! To complete the Oregon dream meal, none less than James Beard award winner, Vitaly Paley will personally cook dinner for the group. A former concert pianist, Vitaly is a maestro with food. His commitment to sustainable, seasonable Pacific Northwest cuisine results in pitch perfect dishes, always both creative and elegant. Each couple will receive a signed copy of one of Robert Parker’s books, Vitaly and Kimberly Paley’s, The Paley’s Place Cookbook, and Jim Cutler and Beth Wheeler’s book, Searching for True, featuring Cutler Anderson Architect designs that might include Bill Gates’ compound, Famous Tree in Oregon’s high desert, or the retrofit of the Edith Green Wendell Wyatt Federal Building in Portland. This package will be sold as one lot for three couples and will take place on one night during July 11-13 or 18-20, 2014. THIS LOT INCLUDES:

VINI Award Winner Dinner: Roger Hinshaw

Classic Wines Auction couldn’t happen without the tireless support of some of the region’s most generous individuals. Roger Hinshaw, Bank of America President, exemplifies this sort of open-hearted, dedicated individual, and that is why we are awarding him the 2014 VINI Award. Each year since 1992, the Classic Wines Auction has presented the VINI Award to individuals who have used their enthusiasm and support of viticulture and passion for the community to increase the success of Classic Wines Auction events. Roger Hinshaw has served on the Classic Wines Auction Board for the last nine years and has been involved with the Auction for more than 15 years. The VINI Award dinner this year will be held at the spacious and inviting tasting rooms at Hawks View Cellars in Sherwood. Since 1991, Hawks View Cellars has been a small family-owned winery in Oregon’s Chehalem Mountain range crafting limited production wines from low input viticulture and detailed winemaking. From the winery’s beautifully landscaped patio and lawn, a ring of five Cascade peaks forms a dramatic backdrop to the sweeping view of Oregon’s wine country. The dinner— scheduled during a blissful late summer evening, Saturday September 13, 2014—will overlook vineyards bursting with grapes. The dinner’s spectacular setting will take second place to the laughter and good cheer, not to mention the evening’s food and wine. To begin, enjoy champagne from Moët Hennessy. Then, each fabulous course will be paired with a special selection from Hawk’s View’s full range of wines, including Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris from Oregon, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from Washington’s grapes, and Pinot Noir and Syrah from California’s vineyards. Each couple will take home a special bottle of Hawks View Cellars’ 2013 La Baleine red blend. This will be an evening to celebrate and remember for years to come. This package will be sold for $2,500 per couple, for a maximum of 25 couples, and will take place Saturday, September 13, 2014. THIS LOT INCLUDES: ■■

Commemorative Magnums

This year’s Classic Wines Auction Commemorative Magnum is very special indeed: it combines the highly sought-after 2012 Ken Wright Cellars Carter Vineyard Pinot Noir with the evocative work of artist Gregory Grenon. First, consider the wine. Ken Wright’s guiding principle is to care for the land and let the grape speak for itself without forcing it into any pre-ordained profile. As a result, Ken Wright Cellars has earned a worldwide reputation for gorgeously crafted wine whose every sip reveals terroir and the sensitive profile of the Pinot Noir grape. The 2012 Carter Vineyard is fruit-focused with moderate tannins and acidity, and aromas of black cherry, blueberry, blackberry, and plum skin. Next, look at the artwork that complements the wine. Gregory Grenon, one of the Northwest’s most recognized artists, paints emotionally charged portraits in oil on glass. Strong dark lines set off his brilliantly hued compositions. Grenon’s paintings express a powerful range of emotions on his behalf. They also serve as a platform to remind viewers of the significance and powerful profile of women, as reflected by Conceal, the image captured on these bottles. Each magnum comes in a custom, Classic Wines Auction 30th Anniversary wood box and is signed by Ken Wright and Gregory Grenon. These will be sold for $350 each, maximum of 47 bottles. California Cabernet Deluxe

Win this lot, and give your wine cellar an infusion of 50 bottles of top-of-the-line Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. We’re not just talking any Cabernet, either, but bottles from four of the appellation’s finest wineries—Caymus, Chateau Montelena, Spottswoode, Silver Oak, and Charles Krug—and from a range of vintages dating as far back as 1974. First, you’ll take home a case of Caymus Special Selection Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon from 2000 to 2006. Caymus Special Selection is the Wagner family’s flagship wine and is comprised of the very best barrels of the vintage. As Robert Parker wrote, “Not many wineries, anywhere in the world, can match the Wagner family’s consistent record of success.” Parker’s scores for these bottles range from 92 to 96 points. Add to that a case from another venerable Napa Valley winery, Chateau Montelena, with bottles from 1996 to 2009, including the 2003, of which Robert Parker said, “This is another example of why Chateau Montelena over the last thirty years has been the most consistently fine producer of top-flight, world-class Napa Cabernet Sauvignon!” Ten bottles of Spottswoode Estate from 1999 through 2010 join this amazing package. Robert Parker had this to say about Spottswoode, “When the history of Napa’s great vineyards is written, the 40-acre Spottswoode Vineyard, tucked behind the quaint town of St. Helena, will be counted among the finest grand cru vineyards of the region.” The bottle of 2007 Spottswoode Estate Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon included in this lot has the 100 point rating to prove it. Last but far from least, you’ll take home a case of older Charles Krug Peter Mondavi Family Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, including three bottles of the stellar 1974 vintage. This is a truly rare find and one you’d be foolish to pass by. This package will be as one lot and includes 50 bottles. TO TAKE HOME THIS EVENING:

Meyers Leonard One-on-One

At Classic Wines Auction, our mission is to help children and families rise above difficult circumstances and thrive. Portland Trail Blazer Meyers Leonard knows firsthand what that’s all about. He’s faced difficult challenges and through hard work and discipline he’s succeeded to become an example for others. Win this lot and you can host up to 15 kids (elementary or middle school aged) for 2 hours of inspiration, fun on the court, and learning with pro basketball star Meyers Leonard. To accommodate the Trail Blazer’s schedule, this event will be offered on Saturday, March 15 at the Trail Blazers Practice Facility in Tualatin. The Trail Blazers Practice Facility is one of the newest and largest practice facilities in the National Basketball Association. Meyers Leonard’s early life was largely defined by family tragedy. When he was six years old, his father James, a golf pro, was killed in a freak bicycle accident. His mother Tracie, had been largely housebound since her husband’s death, sidelined by an old horseback injury and subsequent disc surgery that left her with crippling pain. When he was in second grade, young Meyers gained a surrogate family that helped him develop the strength, skill, and discipline needed to enter professional sports. The children who take part in this package will start their special day with one hour clinic of drills, tailored to the specific age group, from the Trail Blazers coaching staff and Meyers Leonard. After the fun and learning, they’ll do a Q and A, pictures and autographs with Meyers. These children will never forget this day, but just to make sure, they’ll each take home an autographed jersey and basketball from their new favorite player, Meyers Leonard. And for you, there are two front row seats next to the Blazer bench for the Trail Blazers game on Sunday, March 16, 2014. This package will be as one lot for 15 people and will take place on Saturday, March 15, 2014. THIS LOT INCLUDES: ■■

One hour of drills, coaching, and learning from the Trail Blazers coaching staff

■■

Second hour will be a Q & A, pictures and autographs with NBA Pro Basketball player Meyers Leonard
