Get Inspired... The tribal trend has been around for a while now but it keeps reinventing itself by expanding across the seas from Africa. It infuses itself with other ethnic and ancient cultures such as influences from Native America, Europe, and Chinese heritage to create an even bolder statement with more intricate patterns. This latest Tribal trend is referred to as Multi-Tribal and is richly woven with warm, earthy colours and is heavy influenced by animal prints and motifs as well as splashes of colour. The step away from the original tribal concept creates a more visually rich and textured designs. Although being originally from all different parts of the world’s ancient tribes and cultures, these creations fit flawlessly together in this trend. So get a little edgy and have fun by adding pieces that are full of life. To keep this latest tribal trend modern, be sure to add bursts of colour. So go on, don’t be afraid of the jungle and tribalise your summer this season! Neo Teal is an upbeat bright in teal, mint and peach in a jumble of geometrics – large scale on the quilt cover’s front and a smaller variation on the reverse. The colours are joyful, the pattern uplifting. Choose accessories in tonal orange – such as the Ombre Coral throw – to add further zest.

Referencing the highly evocative poppy flower, Opium Red features a stunning abstract floral in saturated red and black on a white background. While the front of the quilt cover is a large-scale painterly effect the reverse is a clever contrast - a small scale palm print in red and black that is duplicated in the European Pillowcases.

Sweet

Roma Pontoon, by Ltd. from Logan & Mason, is high fashion and utterly on-trend! Its mix of abstract swirls and whorls, in a wash of tonal blues in a beautiful painterly effect, were inspired by the ebb and flow of the ocean. The intricate honeycomb graphic on the quilt cover’s reverse – in blue and white – is the perfect counterbalance for this uber-stylish summer bedtime look.

Juliette Rose from Logan & Mason is a bed of lush florals in a wash of watercolour brushstrokes that utterly transforms what could have been a classic floral print. Tonal hues of pink, blush and purple are offset by an unexpected lace print in teal green on the quilt cover’s reverse. 6 Home Scene - November 2016

T

he bedroom can be one of the easiest and cheapest rooms to update the look of and when you consider it is one room we spend most of our time in, it should be a space that is not overlooked. Sometimes a simple declutter and fresh new bed linen is all that is needed to create an elegant and soothing retreat perfect for summer. Legend Linen has recently released its Look Book for summer bedlinen so there’s no lack of choice and no shortage of designs that will inject lush new style into your bedroom. Here’s just a few ideas.

Manly Sorbet is the wild child of the look – blocks of triangular colour in black, white, peach, lemon, lime and sky blue. This quilt cover is fun, yet very smart – and it has a stunning reverse in a black and white box print.

Priya Sorbet is the new-look boho-chic – fresh, soft and playful it’s a look that can be easily accessorised with cushions and throws (such as the Ombre Throw Rug, Raffles and Tassel Square Cushions) in a mix of coral and turquoise hues. Legend Linen has released a range of vintage-washed linen blend quilt cover sets, under its Private Collection Label, that embodies our love of raw simplicity and chromatic restraint. Versai combines two natural fibres – linen and cotton – to create a luxuriously understated look that is soothingly soft to the skin, year round. Cool in summer, warm in winter Versai – in its carefully balanced colour palette – creates a cocoon of sophisticated comfort. The magic lies in the carefully edited colour palette - charcoal, denim, linen and white – that sits casually and elegantly with simple interiors and natural finishes such as timber, stone, knits and leather. Two defining details of Versai are the fabric ties that secure the openings of both the quilt covers and pillowcases – a practical yet perfectly proportioned solution – and its affordability. amboo homewares offer a range of health, aesthetic and environmental benefits for your home. Bamboo is remarkably sustainable due to its resilient and prolific nature, requiring minimal water and no fertilisers or pesticides. It grows at a much faster rate than regular trees and is naturally regenerative, making it a more sustainable alternative to timber and cotton. It only takes bamboo approximately four years to reach maturity opposed to regular trees which can take between 25 to 70 years. Bamboo is a great material for allergy sufferers as it is antibacterial and hypo-allergenic. There are many ways you can decorate your home with bamboo. Similar

to timber, bamboo adds a natural element to the space. Its light colour and characteristics that resemble timber enhance and complement most colour palettes. Bamboo in its natural state makes a great feature on its own and when manufactured correctly, makes quality and environmentally friendly products. From pegs and toothbrushes to kitchen scrubbers and tea towels, there are many stylish and practical bamboo products on the market that offer a healthier and more sustainable alternative to plastic products, providing a safer environment for your family. Summer!

Welcome to

W

ith the onset of longer days and warmer weather, now is the perfect time to update our homes. Whether it be a new colour scheme, window coverings or items of furniture, many companies are releasing designs reflecting the change of seasons, with a view to bringing nature indoors and indoors into nature. When considering colour changes to your interior, it’s important to establish the atmosphere you would like to create – how you would like to feel within the space. If uplifting energy is your goal, then vibrant hues will be your friend. Used as an accent in furnishings and/or a feature wall they will invigorate a space. This season’s must have colours are blush, salmon, coral and apricot. These related colours pair beautifully with grey tones, which have been a popular hard surface colour choice (tiles etc) over the past couple of years. They also work equally well with light to medium toned timbers. Heading into summer we will see more of the vibrant blues, greens, teals and aquas filtering into our interiors. Reflecting the colours of the ocean, they will provide a welcome haven to cool and calm our senses on a hot day. Combine these with earthy neutrals and natural textiles and you will have a match made in heaven.

The Moroccan inspired “Jali” sheer fabric (left) and “Lovina” collection (right) will add light filled softness and weathered character to an interior (both Warwick Fabrics - available KHIDesign)

If a relaxing haven is the preferred goal, then a softer “weathered” look may inspire. Basically a more subtle “imperfect” version of the afore mentioned colours plus a sprinkling of deeper blues and neutrals. Driven by a desire to slow down and appreciate nature’s natural life cycles, the use of these colours and fabrics will imbue a pared back organic quality to your home. Soft, relaxed and easy to live with. Perfect for our summer interiors! The addition of a few beautiful leafy green plants will add an additional punch of freshness and texture, further blurring the division between our interior space and the great outdoors!

Pitch Dark is an undefinable palette that challenges the senses and plays on the idea of finding dark spaces more relaxing, meditative and exploratory which in the past has been associated with light colours. It’s a new way forward for interiors and the use of strong colours like blacks and dark charcoals, combined with rich reds, moody nudes and deep blue is a palette that is coming into its own.

The colour library

COLOUR FORECAST

Strata is a rich and earthy palette that mimics the colours found in the layers of the earth. The diversity of the colours is reminiscent of those variations found in the environment. It features ruddy tans and browns, paired with lush deep greens found in fauna and plant life, with a hint of sea blue which is complemented by neutral base colours.

T

he Haymes Colour Library was created to start conversations about the latest directions in colour and design. The latest release to this innovative new colour trends model introduces Volume 8, Colour Forecast, consisting of three colour themes; Stark Beauty, Strata and Pitch Dark, each with its own palette of nine colours, with four core colours showcased for each colour story. Wendy Rennie, Colour &

Concept Manager at Haymes Paint explains the inspiration behind Volume 8, Colour Forecast. “Volume 8 covers the diverse collection of colour and design directions we see influencing the market globally. We’ve presented this volume in three distinct colour stories that we believe will work well across interiors, particularly in Australia.” “There is no one size fits all

approach and often it’s the blend of external factors like culture, arts, politics and commerce that influence our trends and colour palettes,” Wendy said. Haymes Paint released its innovative, new colour trends model – The Colour Library earlier this year, which is their new tool used for the release of the company’s colour stories and themes. Stark Beauty is a finely crafted approach to interiors that blends together a soft minimalism with an almost Japanese aesthetic and sensibility. The colours are simple parings of subtle whites and bold leafy greens providing a palette that is both fresh, energizing and balanced.

Citrus and Ginger The fresh flavours of summer 2016

The innovative Microplane brand is one step ahead of the trend having just released two clever new tools for the fast and easy prep of these two key ingredients – an ergonomic Flexi Zesti zester and an ingenious Ginger Tool. The Microplane Flexi Zesti is in a smart new shape, that fits both the curve of the palm and the shape of the citrus fruit. This all makes for ease of use plus fast and efficient zesting. he grating side of the tool actually flexes to the shape of the fruit, while the domed side moulds so well to the hand that its use is effortless. The freshly grated zest is collected in the integrated chamber – and is accessed by simply removing the silicone top and inverting the appliance.

The Microplane Ginger Tool is the complete answer to preparing fresh ginger – it simplifies the task of peeling, grating AND slicing this flavour-rich rhizome. This three-in-one tool features a rasp-like peeler - to quickly remove peel from the knobbliest of ginger - a panel of Microplane’s best-selling Fine photo-etched grating blade plus a razor-sharp angled blade for precision-cut fine ginger slices. Microplane is renowned for producing (in the USA) the sharpest grating blades that retain their sharpness – and the Ginger Tool is no exception! The Ginger Tool features a non-slip base and handle for ease of handling and is top-rack dishwasher safe. Both items are available nationally from leading kitchenware retailers. SHAYNNA BLAZE ON KITCHEN DESIGN

Kitchens are often known as the heart of the home – they're not just a place where meals are created, but a space that's the centre of family life. As it's one of the most used rooms, it makes sense that the kitchen's design is both visually appealing and highly functional, which relies on careful planning. Interior designer and ASKO advocate, Shaynna Blaze, shares some very useful tips on kitchen design

THE KITCHEN'S PURPOSE Shaynna explains that the first step is deciding how the kitchen will be used. “The configuration and space required depends on the different types of functions in the kitchen other than just cooking. Will it be used as a seating area at the bench, a place for kids to do homework and if it's part of a full open plan living space.” Other considerations include the frequency and style of entertaining, whether you are looking at a pantry with a full butler's kitchen or to accommodate laundry appliances.

DON'T BE AFRAID TO PUSH DESIGN BOUNDARIES There are so many design and functional options that can be overwhelming when deciding on the kitchen's design that many homeowners tend to stick with safer options and neutral colours. Shaynna suggests trying to step outside your comfort zone in small stages by incorporating colour in features like the splashback, bespoke handles and a different colour in the island bench to the main cabinetry of the kitchen.

DON'T FORGET FUNCTIONALITY AND PRACTICALITY While it can be fun to pick out design elements like benchtops, splashbacks and cupboard doors, one of the most crucial aspects of any kitchen is its functionality. “The kitchen layout must be practical,”

says Shaynna. “Allow for the most commonly used appliances – fridge, sink and oven – to be placed in the 'work triangle' so that moving between them all is only a couple of steps away.”

LOCATION OF APPLIANCES Don't forget to ensure that there are power points, gas and water outlets located where they are needed. Certain appliances also need be properly vented to ensure that enough air is circulating around them, so check the manufacturer's recommendations for the gaps to leave around each appliance. Shaynna also advises to be sure to account for enough space around fridges and ovens so the doors can open fully.

MAKE ROOM FOR SPACE AND STORAGE Ensure there is enough space for storing kitchen utensils and crockery. “One of the biggest mistakes you can make when designing a new kitchen is not planning for enough storage space,” says Shaynna. “Install deep drawers for easy access to pots, pans and bowls, and slimmer drawers for all your cutlery, cups and plates, leaving the larger cupboard doors for all your pantry needs.” Don't forget to make use of the upper wall space to install overhead cupboards and use pull-out corner solutions to provide easy access to items stored in the back corners.

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF NATURAL LIGHTING Natural lighting adds to the illusion of space and works well with modern, open plan living. If you lack windows you might opt for large skylights with added benefits of ventilation. Maximise natural lighting by keeping window coverings to a minimum and leave blinds and shutters open. If privacy is an issue, Shaynna suggests opting for a translucent window shade that still allows light in.

UPDATE APPLIANCES Old appliances can contribute to the kitchen looking out-dated, so consider replacing them with models that suit the new design. “Old appliances in a modern kitchen will turn heads for the wrong reasons,” says Shaynna. “Coloured appliances can add a splash of colour and contrast, while simple design and neutral colours can add to a timeless look that will last.”

BIN IT If space allows, plan for a recycling bin in addition to the general waste to make managing rubbish more efficient. “A pull out bin hidden in the cabinetry keeps your kitchen design sleek and keeps the mess out of site,” says Shaynna.

COUNTER ISLAND If there are plans to install an island or bench, try and opt for enough overhang to allow for comfortable seating and, with the addition of power, the island turns the area into an instant work station hub,” says Shaynna.

THE KITCHEN SINK Shaynna's last tip is the type of kitchen sink. “Look at styles that have accessories like chopping boards, drainage trays and stainless covers. These help create extra bench space in small areas and the covers let you hide the mess when you are more interested in entertaining”. e all love summer, but when the temperature rises, nothing beats the cooling air of an air-conditioner. Did you know that one of the contributors of respiratory illness is the harmful bacteria that can colonise inside your air conditioning unit? Invisible to the naked eye these bacteria can trigger respiratory distress for allergy and asthma sufferers. Simply cleaning the filters is not enough to reduce the risk of air-borne contaminants. Your air conditioner needs to be professionally cleaned and sanitised, removing these contaminants and restoring the health of your air conditioning unit. You can also achieve up to 30% in energy savings (per 35sqm room) by having your unit professionally cleaned. Winner of the 2016 NSW Sanitair Licensee of the Year, Graham Sundin is the owner of Sanitair

Northern Rivers, an Australian award-winning, on-site, specialised air conditioning cleaning service. Sanitair are the only air conditioning cleaning service providers that offer a 12-month mould free guarantee with all Premium services. There's a lot on offer, but don't be too put off by the many variations for bedroom flooring - there are really only a few basic types that you need to think about.

TYPES OF BEDROOM FLOOR

All you need to know about bedroom flooring COULTERS CARPET COURT

Whether you prefer to go for style or comfort, or if you have a specific need for easy-maintenance flooring or maybe flooring that will last a lifetime, picking out the right sort of floor for your bedroom is really very simple. 20 Home Scene - November 2016

CARPET - the staple bedroom flooring, available in countless colour possibilities, with many grades of quality and price. If you're looking for colour, comfort or cost, then carpet is the option for you. TIMBER - high in price but long in life, the durability of wooden flooring is second to none and just as stylish. But there's the obvious compromise on comfort to contend with so you really have to be sure you're happy with a hard-floor bedroom. LAMINATE - the cost-compromising option for those eager for a wooden-look floor. While ticking all the style options with versatile colours and qualities available, laminate flooring is another hard-floor option. But then you can always soften it up with a rug or two. BAMBOO - to make a real style statement without paying the high price of timber you might also want to think about bamboo. A more natural alternative to laminate it's just as easy to maintain, simple to lay and stylish too. VINYL - while being very similar to laminate flooring, and being just as good a compromise from timber, vinyl is slightly softer than laminate and, unlike laminate, is better for slip resistance, which can be safer. TILES - while not usually associated with bedroom flooring, tiles can offer a unique and stylish flooring solution. While sharing the durability and easyclean traits of other hard flooring, tiling offers and extra versatility when it comes to picking a design or being extra-creative. CONCRETE - the often overlooked flooring type, ultramodern concrete offers easy maintenance, long life flooring without excessive cost. While it's much trickier than other flooring types to install, the seamless finish is unmatched by any other option. That's not all...

FLOORING CHOICES Thinking about the purpose of your flooring is the safest way to make sure you're picking the right option. None of the factors you should consider are mutually exclusive but you will still want to think about the factors you want to put emphasis on and the factors where you can compromise just a little. There's no one flooring type that ticks every box so it's about finding what suits your needs best.

DURABILITY - unless you're prone to constantly knocking things off your bed-side table, then durability might not be a huge factor for bedroom flooring. Foot fall in bedrooms tends to be much less than in living rooms or kitchens so

this makes soft flooring, like carpet, a much more viable option. Then again, in a kids room durability might play a bigger role, as toys and spillages do their damage at a much more frequent rate.

COMFORT - in a bedroom comfort has to be high on the agenda. The low foot fall means going for that deep luxury carpet is a clear option. Shag-pile rugs belong in a bedroom too, and, with the option for having any sort of rug or mat, you don't just have to pick carpet if you want to maximise your comfort.

EASY-CLEAN - your lifestyle will probably dictate whether you need to go for easy-clean flooring or not. Laminates or vinyls are the obvious choice if you want to minimise the floor cleaning effort. But their smooth surface does mean that dust can collect in corners if you don't give it a regular sweep. Carpets only need a quick vacuuming, but they can be stained or marked much more easily.

ALLERGY-FREE - this is a top consideration that people often overlook. Dust allergies are quite common and any sort of fabric material in a room is going to have an impact on the amount of dust than can collect. Carpets are now frequently made with allergy free materials, but they are still prone to collecting hairs and dust.

VALUE - The scale of costs of hardwood flooring make it simply not an option for most. But the substitutes available mean that you only have to compromise a tiny bit to still get that much sought after timber-look. Cork, bamboo or laminate floorings all offer a much cheaper alternative and each have their own benefits. Carpet values vary massively, but this is usually for a very good reason; longevity being one of the main factors that prove sometimes it's not ideal to go for a cheap floor.

ENVIRONMENT - the main thing to think about if you want to get eco-friendly flooring for your bedroom is the material. Naturally made and produced flooring is best for the environment but you also want to check the source to ensure that it's renewable, and that the floor will last a long time before needing to be replaced. Another useful approach is to look into the manufacturing process of the flooring if you really want to ensure the carbon footprint is minimal.

STYLISH - style all depends on the look you want to go for. While carpets offer a huge amount of versatility in the style stakes there's no denying hard wood flooring is as stylish as it gets. But style options are infinite, so much so that we've written some more detailed guides about getting the look of your bedroom just right.

bathroom renovation mistakes to avoid..

DON’T...

1. DON’T get caught up in the current style hypes. Bathrooms can date very quickly (in as little as two years). Pick fixtures and tiles that will remain classic and functional for the next ten plus years. Style the room with accessories to make it pop. 2. DON’T Install cheap tapware, railings, toilets, tiles etc.. They will deteriorate quickly. Invest in good quality brands that stand behind their products. 3. DON’T put freestanding baths up against walls or shoved in corners. these baths need to be accessible all around to clean and maintain properly. 4. DON’T overcrowd your bathroom. Maximise the space as much as possible, use shower panels, wall hung vanities and toilets to free up floor space.. 5. DON’T use materials that are inappropriate. Non-waterproof mdf, particle board, soft woods will swell, rot and discolour. Porous stones and slates need to be sealed and manitained. 6. DON’T skimp on storage. You need room to store cosmetics, hair and shaving appliances, personal hygiene products, etc. Vanities with drawers, inbuilt shaving cabinets, towel/linen cupboards , niches in showers all provide extra storage. 7. DON’t use unlicensed tradespeople when renovating your bathroom. Check licenses, ask for wetsealing certificates. Cover yourself for what will be one of the biggest outlays in your home.

ne of the best ways you can add value to your property is to renovate. When you are going to spend money updating your home it pays to do your homework and make sure that what you are planning on doing will give you the best increase in your properties price for the amount you are going to spend. Bessie Hassan, Money Expert at finder.com.au shares her tips and strategies when it comes to renovating. “One of the smartest ways to add value to your home is to add an additional bedroom. Converting a two bedroom home into a three bedroom home can greatly increase your asking price when it comes time to sell later down the track,” says Hassan. If your finances don’t stretch to undertaking such a large renovation, there are many small, low-cost projects that can breathe life into your property and also add value. Hassan says “ simply freshening up paint in a room, replacing flooring, or improving your kerb appeal such as by investing in a new letterbox or laying new grass on your lawn can enhance the appeal and impression of your home.” There are also many ways in which you can save when it comes time to renovate and any savings can be put towards other areas of the home that might be in need of lift. “If possible, try to leave your electrical and plumbing outlets in their current position so you can save on plumbing and installation costs during a renovation project,” says Hassan. If you are going to renovate it is also important to consider what renovations will add the most value to your home. “Don’t renovate the wrong rooms or elements of the home. For instance, you should focus on renovating or upgrading high-traffic rooms such as the kitchen or bathroom rather than spending your funds on sprucing up the laundry which won’t be

used as frequently.” If you are going to be spending a large amount of money on your home you need to do your research. “Look into the demographics of an area, research the cost of materials and labour, and set yourself a realistic budget and timeline (and stick to it!),” says Hassan. “There are plenty of online resources available, such as online calculators and free suburb profile reports, which can help guide your renovation decisions. “It’s also sensible to surround yourself with a team of experts, such as local real estate agents, a mortgage broker, various tradesmen, and other renovation specialists to help you along the way. “Find out exactly what it is that local residents will pay extra for so you can boost the appeal of your property to a future buyer. “For example, a recent survey finder.com.au found that Generation Y are most likely to want a dishwasher in their property so if you know that a future buyer could fall into this age group, then you may want to spend a little more on a modern and efficient dishwasher,” says Hassan. To avoid over-capitalising, you need to think about how much value you can add to the property given your local market conditions. Hassan says it is wise to carry out some research into the market and look into median property prices, price growth trends, and buyer behaviour (e.g. if they prefer to rent or buy). “Speak to a local real estate agent to see how you can best add value to your home and to access information on similar properties in the area.” If you don’t want to end up spending more that you can afford on renovations that don’t add value to your property, it really does pay to do your homework.

Bessie Hassan is the Money Expert at finder. com.au - Australia’s most visited comparison website - and is a respected commentator and author who is passionate about helping Australians make better financial decisions.

Update the look of your outdoor area this summer

A

s the weather warms up, our thoughts naturally turn to spending more time outside enjoying summer bbqs, entertaining family and friends on the deck or simply relaxing outside on a warm summer night after a long day at work. After the cold winter months your outdoor area will usually be in need of a quick makeover, or even a full transformation. One way to update your outdoor area is with fencing and screening. This not only provides privacy, shade and protection from winds, it can also help to define your outdoor space. Aluminium slat screening is an innovative, easy-to-install screening system that can fit into any exterior design. Standard sizing is available or it can be made to size. For those looking for a high quality long lasting product, the aluminium range is perfect to achieve high end trends for new homes or makeover projects. The aluminium slats come in a wide range of powdercoat colours to suit all decors and provide a durable finish. Aluminium fencing is a great alternative to those looking for a light weight alternative to brick and timber, and with a range of colurs, it can provide a contrasting finish to your home. Aluminium fencing and screening products are tough, long lasting and low maintenance. Given its tough, durable finish, aluminium is perfect for use in our area. Call in and see the team at Mitre10 Yamba and take a look at the range of aluminium screening and fencing they have availalble.

Summer

Tips to get your backyard ready for

A

s Summer approaches, outdoor living begins to swing into step - barbecues become an essential part of the weekend, and weekday dinners are enjoyed in the warm open air with family and friends. However, the last thing you want before your outdoor get together is a moss-filled lawn, wilting flowers and dead tree branches. You need to ensure that your backyard is ready for the entertaining season. Thankfully, the Fiskars team have developed some handy tips for preparing and maintaining your backyard area, so that you can make the most out of festivities. Spring Clean After months of neglect, your garden will be needing a spring clean. Use Fiskars rake’s to effortlessly clear away any debris such as dead sticks, leaves and rubbish that may have appeared. Filter through the plant beds and spend some time pulling away any weeds to determine the space you have. It may take a while, but it’s important to start with a clean canvas when preparing for the warmer months. Pruning Late Spring is a good time to begin pruning old shrubs and dead tree limbs to get your garden looking lush. To make pruning trees easier, opt for tools that are lightweight and have a good amount

of reach. The Universal Garden Cutters by Fiskars have been developed to reach tree crowns and easily cut through dense bushes, allowing you to trim overhead without a ladder, or at ground level without bending or kneeling. After pruning, always add a dose of organic-based fertiliser to encourage new growth. Spruce up your lawn Lawns can look a little worse for wear after Winter, but by using a lawn feed packed full of minerals, your lawn will turn into thick, lush, green grass. Also make sure to feed your lawn on a regular basis with granular feed throughout the summer months. Weeding Weeds grow everywhere. They compete with plants and grass for water and nutrients and make your garden less attractive. The only way to avoid this problem is to remove them. There are two traditional ways of removing weeds. Chemicals, which can affect your

soil and damage plants, or hand tools which are a much more eco-friendly option and allow you to cut closer to the plant - though this can lead to backaches after longer periods. Fiskars has developed the Xact Weed Puller which enables the removal of weeds easily, effortlessly, and with no need to bend the gardener does their weeding tasks standing still, which is much more comfortable. Develop A Watering Schedule You don’t want the warm weather to affect your gardening work, so by having a well-developed watering schedule, it will promote good root development and also help plants stay lush during dry spells. Make sure to always water early in the morning, and when it gets really hot a deep soak of water once a week is optimal.

No property is safe from Termites

T If it was once alive... put it in the green bin There’s no need to be confused about what goes in your green organics bin if you think about it. All food and kitchen waste, including kitchen towel, tea bags, serviettes, newspaper and cardboard were once living things and can therefore be placed in your green organics bin for recycling. Your grass clippings and tree prunings were also living things and can be recycled if you put them in your green bin. Clarence Valley Council’s

aim is to keep food and garden waste out of our landfill to keep our methane production low, extend the life of our landfill and prevent an increase in waste management fees. Remember, go nude, wrap your scraps or use the compostable kitchen caddy liners-but get your organics in your green bin! For more information go to www.clarence.nsw.gov.au or phone the waste hotline 1800 335 599.

ermites are the cause of the greatest economic losses of timber in Structures in Australia. Independent data compiled by state forest shows 1 in every 5 homes are attacked by termites at some stage in their life. CSIRO data indicates that it could be as high as 1 in 3. Australia’s termite species (white ants) are the most destructive termites in the world. It can take as little as three months for a termite colony to severely damage almost all the timber in a home. John Elder of John Elder Pest Control has been inspecting for and treating termites in the Clarence valley since 1976. John recommends an annual inspection of your property for termite attack with prices starting from $132.00 including GST. Included in the visual inspection is the use of the lastest thermal imaging camera at no extra cost. John Elder Pest Control also inspects newly built homes and inspection reports comply with building warranty. Homeowners can have their home inspected by any pest control firm providing they are licenced and provide a report in accordance with the relevant Australian standard for termite inspections. Just like having your car serviced by a licenced mechanic and not at the dealership but still retaining the warranty. Before you carry out renovations, additions or just your annual termite inspection call John Elder Pest Control on 0418 661185 for all your pest control needs and save.

devices to meet Australian standards. To protect against pollutants the tank should be fitted with a “first flush” device that diverts the first flow of water from the roof away from the tank. Suitable screens should also be fitted to prevent mosquito breeding and animals and debris from getting into the tank. Using tank water for drinking is not recommended by NSW Health in urban areas where there is a good quality public water supply. Rainwater from tanks is generally safe to drink however tanks can be contaminated with air borne industrial contaminants, from roof or plumbing materials or with bacteria from bird or animal droppings. In some cases rainwater is unsafe to drink, or needs to be treated to make it safe for drinking. NSW Health has technical information and guidelines on using tank

ainwater tanks are commonly used in Australia as a water supply particularly in rural and remote areas. About 20% of households have rainwater tanks and they are making a comeback with the growing need to conserve water. They provide a constant supply of free water that can be used for a wide range of household functions and for garden use. There are a number of considerations when installing a tank. To make the most use of tank water it’s a good idea to plumb the tank into the house to appliances such as the toilet and laundry. This should be done by a professional plumber, and is required if the tank is directly connected to the town water supply for topping up when empty. Tanks connected to the town water supply usually require isolation valves or backflow prevention

water for drinking. Rainwater tanks do not require council consent if they are less than 40,000 litres, but they must comply with plumbing, and building standards. To encourage water saving Clarence Valley Council offers rebates to town water customers installing rainwater tanks. For more information refer to the Council website at www. clarence.nsw.gov.au, or call in to your local council office and pick up a rebate information kit.

What you need to ask when choosing an

air conditioner Choosing the right air conditioner for your home needn’t be a daunting task. Panasonic has a range of reliable air conditioning units, including cooling, reserve cycle, room-only and ducted systems, to suit any home design and budget. Panasonic’s intelligent air conditioning technologies ensure maximum energy efficiency, pure air quality and precise temperature control, plus they are designed to work with your home’s natural air flow and temperature range to create the perfect climate. Here are just a few of the questions that you need to ask yourself before you purchase an air conditioning unit.

A

dvance Roofing is a Maclean based business that believes strongly in providing a quality product, with great service at the right price. Grant and his team restore, concrete tile, terracotta tile, metal and can encapsulate asbestos roofs to near new condition. Most property owners overlook the repair and maintenance of their roofs thinking it will be cost prohibitive and only make restoration or maintenance plans when it’s far too late. Advance Roofing believes

Do you need a reserve cycle air conditioner or one that only cools?

a roof is the most valuable asset of any home and should be treated with the respect it deserves. According to the people in the know, we are in for a big wet season this year, with some high winds and torrential rain forecast to hit our region. So it is advised that you give Advance Roofing a call to receive an obligation free quote to either have your roof maintained or completely restored. Once your roof is restored it will look fantastic, add value and give you future peace of mind

What is the size of the room to be air conditioned? Do you have wall or ceiling insulation? How big are your windows and which direction do they face? Is internal and external noise an important factor for you? Do I need a split or ducted system? How is the capacity or size of an air conditioner unit measured? The Australian standard measures the capacity (heating and cooling power) with Kilowatts (kW). This is a measure of the amount of heat that will be removed (cooling) or added (heating). These measurements are shown on the Energy Efficiency Rating label found on all air conditioners as Capacity Output kW and Power Input kW.

ver wondered how a showroom floor gets to be so spick and span, while no matter how long and hard you scrub your garage or concrete floor, you can’t seem to get that glossy finish? The answer is Rust-Oleum’s RockSolid range. RockSolid is the DIY concrete and flooring polish that will leave your floor looking just like the showroom. The average Joe can enjoy seeing their ride on gloss thanks to RockSolid’s long lasting sheen. RockSolid is an easy to apply floor and concrete epoxy that is quick dry and self-levelling. Most floor and concrete polishes require a full seven days before they’re ready to bare loads again, but not RockSolid. You can park on a freshly applied coat after just one day. RockSolid is not only ideal for garages but can be used for rumpus rooms, hallways, offices, kitchens, laundries, basements - and the list goes on. A product that is easy to use and achieves industrial grade results is hard to come by, but RockSolid offers exactly that. RockSolid offers not only a great aesthetic, but it also provides an important protective layer for your flooring. Over time, concrete will crack naturally due to exposure to water, chemicals, and changes in climate. This would usually spell bad news for a floor epoxy, but RockSolid coatings are flexible, moving with the concrete to prevent cracking and peeling, making for a longer lasting coating. RockSolid is available in a number of finishes including Denim Chip, Saddle Tan Chip, Cherry Bomb, Earth Brown, Gun Metal, and Brilliant Blue. For more information or to find your nearest stockist visit www.rustoleum.com.au

New generation of Husqvarna Automower® brings effortless mowing to the aussie backyard Key features of the new Husqvarna Automower® Range AM105 1. Compact 3-wheeled robotic mower for efficient mowing of open grass areas. 2. Suitable for smaller lawns up to 600m² 3. Can handle slopes with an incline of 25% (14°) 4. The Husqvarna Automower® will carry out its work quietly, safely and effectively

usqvarna, the world leader in robotic lawn mowers, has launched the next generation of Automower®. The four new models; AM105, AM315, AM430X and AM450X, are set to take the hard yakka out of lawn maintenance. Since introducing the world’s first robotic mower in 1995, Husqvarna has been refining the Automower® to deliver the most reliable garden partner available on the market today. Proving to be the ultimate self-reliant mower, the latest generation of Automower® products are simple to set up and operate, with exceptional results. The working area is defined by a low voltage boundary wire, which is easily installed. Programming is as easy as personalising your mobile phone and once complete, the Husqvarna Automower® will carry out its work quietly, safely and effectively - even charging itself when required. Selected models boast a Weather Timer that adjusts cutting habits and adapts to lawn growth in line with weather conditions. The concept behind robotic mowing is to keep grass short. The Automower® cuts consistently, in irregular patterns covering every blade of grass to create a smooth surface and consistency. Since the grass is cut more often than traditional mowing, the tiny clippings act as a natural fertiliser for the lawn, which improves the grass condition and prevents the growth of moss. The Husqvarna Automower® features razor-sharp pivoting blades, delivering a cleaner cut without damaging the grass. Fitted with lift, tilt and collision sensors that trigger the cutting blades to stop automatically, ensures safety comes first. The Husqvarna Automower® also comes with theft protection systems such as theft alarm, personal PIN codes and an installation lock that prevents the robotic mower from functioning on any other installation. Furthermore, select models also feature a built-in GPS with tracking possibilities. Being electrically powered by a high performance Lithium-Ion battery, the Automower® produces no harmful exhaust emissions and is extremely quiet – with noise levels being between 58 - 61dB (A), dependant on the model. This allows the Automower® to work around the clock, without disturbing the neighbours. The Husqvarna Automower® provides Australian’s with a time saving solution for lawn maintenance. Each mower is engineered to work unattended and withstand the toughest climate conditions. Stockist: Yamba Ready Hire

All your hire and mower needs in one place Why hire? When you are considering DIY, sometimes it is better to hire equipment rather than buy. Below are just a few reasons why you should consider hiring. • You are not paying for equipment that is only going to sit around in your shed when you have finished with it. • There are no ongoing maintenance fees. • You only pay for as long as you need the equipment. • The equipment is well maintained and you can be assured that it will work. • Tools will all be tested and tagged and compliant with all safety regulations. • With the large range of equipment and tools available there will always be something suitable for the job you are doing. • Most hire companies keep abreast of technology, so you will often find the latest equipment available for hire.
