Temperatures might not have soared to scorching summer heights just yet but it’s time to turn up the heat on your wardrobe. So take inspiration from far-flung climes and get ready to tackle 2011’s take on the tribal trend. Every spring sees the fashion fraternity sporting a little bit of African-inspired chic and this time round the new twists are acid bright colours and edgy studded accessories. Kick off your safari with a spot of khaki and team with simple vests and printed scarfs. Animal prints are certainly a key part of this

trend and not just muted black and white. Leopard prints and even neon coloured spots and stripes will make your eyes pop when you walk down the high street. Don’t be afraid to mix and match for a cool clashing effect. If animal prints and jungle khakis aren’t your thing, pick up some super funky prints. These will look amazing if you keep the rest of your accessories simple. Studded leather belts look great gathering in kaftans or slung around safari shots. Necklaces should be big, bold and beaded. As for footwear, keep it simple with wedges, sandals or heels.

STEP BACK INTO THE GLAMOROUS SEVENTIES WITH BULLRING

SS11 is finally here and this season marks the rebirth of bell-bottomed jeans and striking jumpsuits with the return of the seventies. Elegant, sophisticated and undeniably chic, this trend lends itself to every body shape and guarantees to get heads turning. Let Bullring take you through some of the key pieces as we take a nostalgic nod to the era that gave us some of the world’s most timeless style pieces… Jumpsuits make a much welcomed return to the high street this season and this time they’re brighter and bolder than ever. Think jewel colours, striking gold waist belts and retro-style halter necks (just like this divine jumpsuit from Warehouse £70), and you’ll be on the right track. The jumpsuit allows you to embrace your inner glamour side whether you’re out for drinks with friends or being whisked away for a romantic date. Every season you should think about investing in a few key pieces, right now, top of your list should be a pair of flare jeans. Sneak skyscraper heels underneath and instantly achieve a long and slender frame. Check out these Indigo Jeans from Whistles at Selfridges £85. Accessories are always key to a look and are essential for capturing the essence of the seventies trend. A pair of super chic sunglasses like these Wayfarers £120 by Ray Ban at Selfridges will instantly add a touch of A-List glamour to any outfit. Whilst a large brimmed hat similar to this one by River Island £29.99 immediately reflects the seventies sentiment helping you to perfect your best Farrah Fawcett impression. Finally, to complete the look you need to ensure that your footwear is fully embracing the era. A pair of towering platforms or sturdy clogs will do the trick and of course add some height. These clogs by French Connection £95 will see you through the spring and summer, and we guarantee you’ll be receiving all sorts of compliments!

A new season is the perfect excuse to experiment with new textures, colours and trends. With the iconic Selfridges, the UK’s only Forever 21 and a wealth of other fashion shops at the centre, Bullring is the ultimate fashion destination.

Get smart There used to be a time when a man could muddle his way through the spring season in the same old t-shirt and jeans. But this year menswear has been given a super smart makeover and there is no room for mucking it up. What you need is a high street foolproof guide to this season’s key fashion buys. So we’ve rounded up all the key products you need to get the look, it’s all-American retro preppy (we blame Glee). PACK YOUR BAGS

Gather up that bikini, it’s holiday time! We’ve got our fingers crossed for long, hot days lounging around in the sun, but we want to look cool and stylish, not hot and sweaty. Fortunately there are some great clothes in the shops that are perfect for a week or two in a foreign country. Denim shorts are always a popular choice, and this year there are loads of styles to choose from. For those who prefer to hide their thighs try skinny shorts or for those who have pins to die for can don the hotpants especially if teamed with a bikini top. You can never have too many T-shirts or vests so scale

the high streets for some funky designs and bright colours. If you like your clothes to stand out there is a variety of playsuits on offer. These are great for the beach, providing an alternative to the usual beach dress, although we love love love the flowing dresses that the shops have created for 2011. Footwear needs to be equally cool, so don’t forget to add some stylish sandals perfect for strolling across the sand. All you need now is something to pack it all in. We suggest an eye-catching suitcase something thats guaranteed to stand out on the airport carousel! GRIT

CREATIVE FILM AWARDS RAISE MONEY FOR BIRMINGHAM’S CHILDREN HOSPITAL A creative charity film competition came to a close and swedes came to life on the big screen at AMC Cinema in Broadway Plaza, as budding producers, actors and enthusiasts got together for glitzy SWEDEit! 2011 awards bash. Hosted by Kerrang Radio presenters Kate Lawler and Alex Baker, the evening showcased the Top 5 swedes as voted by the public. Activities raised £200 and all proceeds go to Birmingham Children’s Hospital. The swede it craze is derived from an online phenomenon revived by Hollywood star Jack Black and is all about re-creating your favourite film or a special movie moment in a short clip, on a low budget. The Top 5 included entries of Mission Impossible, Spiderman, Inception, Rocky and Sixth Sense. Visit http://swedeit.broadway-plaza.co.uk to view the entries and see footage and antics from the fabulous event. The overall winner of the competition was Inception, cleverly created by Chris Stokes and Heather Dewell. The entry was a made using Sylvanian families characters and had an amusing futuristic twist on the original theme of the film. Kate and Alex presented the awards, as well as the top prizes, a flip camera, 100 free cinema vouchers and exclusive Broadway Plaza gift vouchers. The four runners up also received the exclusive gift vouchers. Celebrations continued at the afterparty in Broadway Casino, with The Mirage providing tasty thai treats for hungry guests and Scratch Radio DJ’d and ripped up the dancefloor. To coincide with the SWEDEit! competition, a series of flashmobs choreographed by Hannah Phillips, creative director at The REP took place around Birmingham. Talented students from the Birmingham School of Acting treated the crowds to a movie inspired routine which included scenes from Singing in the Rain, Dirty Dancing, Grease and Thriller.

This year Grit are proudly taken part in the BRMB Walkathon, in aid of Birmingham Children’s Hospital – and to help rebuild the Emergency Department. The Emergency Department of Birmingham Children’s Hospital is the gateway to state-of-the-art treatment in one of Britain’s most iconic hospitals and for some of the most dangerously ill or injured youngsters, their only chance of survival. Despite its importance and the expertise of its staff, the Emergency Department is currently very much a ‘Cinderella’ area with dark, cramped waiting areas, dilapidated decor and inefficient lay-out, all of which means a demoralising experience for its young patients, many of them already frightened or in pain. Top priority for everyone busy fund-raising for the ED is to give the whole place a face-lift, making it lighter, more spacious and more welcoming. They aim to give the ward a major re-design to increase its efficiency, placing the nurses’ station in the middle and providing separate entrances for the ‘walking wounded’ and the youngsters often critically ill or injured who arrive by ambulance. One major element on the wish-list is a parents’ room where patients’ families would get peace and privacy to talk to doctors and sometimes, tragically, to receive bad news. All this does not come cheap, around £500,000 for a full re-fit but with luck and thanks to the enormous generosity of BRMB in choosing the Children’s Hospital’s Emergency Department as their main Walkathon charity, it could soon be a reality. To sponsor us or get involved by joining our walkathon team visit http://www.justgiving.com/walkathon-Clare-Faultless-21029

Easter is all things to all people, a time of rebirth, emerging into summer, joy, chocolate, eggs, chicks or simply remembering when a fictional character was nailed to a couple of lumps of wood. But anyway... Amongst all this egg based chicanery it is all to easy to forget the real reason for Easter. All too often the religious grey-beards will pomp and bluster about fairy-tales, almost blinding us to the fact that Easter is all about time off work. And what better way to celebrate these few days off than to get staggeringly drunk and dance like a mad thing to some great bands like Victories At Sea, Fever Fever, High Commissioners, Filthy Habits and loads more. AND deejays like Chicks Dig Jerks, Fuzzz!, Hasselbaink, BeastRave, Knickerbocker Corey and more and more and more. Also wrestlers and BURLESQUE! Seriously, this is going to be the square root of party. Or party squared. Look something mathematical will be done to the party which will make it big and ace! The date for your iCal is 21st April at HMV Institute. Tickets are available from Seetickets, hmvtickets and with no booking fee, over the counter at We Are Birmingham Shop on Dale End. £12, more on the door. So go to Hott Date Easter.
