initial concepts and ideation were performed quickly in order to move to user testing and early foam and card prototyping.i undertook the project performing both tasks alongside one another enabling quick development and responses to feedback.

the logo and app were an accompanying graphics element. the user can look at the water levels on the tank and gain infomation on how to treat potential problems.

in order to develop fully for the ďŹ nal model, i constructed a solidworks cad model to enable experimentation.

after this development, a

ďŹ nal ďŹ nished model was required. taking place in the

workshop over a total of 5 weeks, dyed plywood,laser cut acrylic and prolab materials were used in the creation.

What does this mean?

Through a standard water supply connection to the mains, a carbon filter and nutrient supplying filter the tank can be left to look after itself. A water change is only at the click of a button.

After connecting to the tank, the app can be used to monitor the water quality, light, air and heat in the tank aswell as connect to online forums and communities.

a large amount of initial ideation of forms were drawn for the planning of this project.

the dirty carbon excel tool was used to ďŹ nd the carbon footprint for the product runs of both variables.

alongside the use of the dirty carbon tool, the eco indicator 99 tool was used. this gave an overview of the ecological impact of the entire products lifecycle.

from a consumption point of view and production of waste, the move to technology such as iPad’s and other pen enabled touchscreen devices is a sustainable option. However this comes with a high usage and energy waste due to the electrical parts required and also has a far larger carbon footprint.

THE USE OF CHEAP ALTERNATIVES MEANS STUDENTS OFTEN LOSE THEIR PIERCINGS EASILY.


to begin the project, a large amount of ideation was conducted to explore a lot of different ideas.

one of the essentials of the project was to cardboard model the final design for demonstration of it folding and unfolding. .

the direction of my project was based on japanese orgami, beginning with paper modelling to find ideas and try out different shapes. i drew and incorporated these into my initial ideation.

the ďŹ nal model was made from a thick card. there are a total of 6 live hinges in the design and as shown above a magnetic clasp on the wing tips and a middle clip for the bottom wings to fold it down.

the product displays earrings in a interesting and novel way whilst also being able to fold into a handy size to keep earrings safe and organised when travelling and staying at dierent places.

The design and consequential manufacture of an injection mould tool to produce a plastic promotional widget.


the ďŹ rst stage of the project was to induvidually choose a brand and design a suitable plastic promotional widget, mine being a fender pick holder.
