Fishing the dream Dustin Connell making a name for himself STORY BY ANTHONY RICHARDS CONTRIBUTED PHOTOS

Fishing is what Dustin Connell was born to do, and he proved that at the highest level in 2017. Connell, 26, completed his rookie season in the Bassmaster Elite Series, where he was one of only 108 fishermen in the world to take part in the professional series. “It is the highest level of bass fishing, Connell said. The season consisted of nine events that led 10 | Chilton County Chamber Of Commerce

him to tour the United States competing in several states, such as Minnesota, New York, Florida and Texas. He finished 12th in the Angler of the Year standings, which are based on point totals from all nine events and also make up the world rankings. Success came in a hurry for Connell during his rookie season, especially after winning his first career elite tournament at the Ross Barnett Reservoir in Mississippi. En route to victory, Connell outdueled some of the legends in the sport of bass fishing,

such as Kevin VanDam who finished one spot behind Connell at the Ross Barnett event. “I didn’t know if I had it [tournament won] or not,” Connell said. According to Connell, it was surreal to be not only competing, but also beating some of the fishermen that he has followed over the years and grown up admiring. That win was big in several ways. Not only did it catapult Connell up the standings, but he also earned a $100,000 check as his winnings. “It’s very expensive [to compete in sport],” Connell said. “You have to win or have really good sponsors to do it.” Several sponsors from Chilton County have helped Connell shoot for his dream of becoming a professional bass fisherman. McKinnon Toyota and Veneer Cast Stone are major sponsors from the Clanton area, along with The Fishing Hole, Hickory Chip and Edwards Jewelers. Following his professional victory, Connell

became a more recognizable figure, including getting noticed shortly after his win during a trip to New York. According to Connell, there is quite the existing fan base that closely follows bass fishing. As the season continued, so did the awards and honors that Connell was presented. He was named the 2017 Bassmaster Rookie of the Year and also qualified for a spot in the 2018 Bassmaster Classic at Lake Hartwell in Greenville, South Carolina March 16-18. “It is the Super Bowl of bass fishing,” Connell said. Despite the sudden success, Connell continues to remember where he came from and who he is as a person. Since he was 10 years old, Connell has felt most comfortable near a body of water with a fishing pole in his hands. Connell remembers catching his first bass in the creek that flows near Goose Pond Park Facebook.com/thechiltonchamber | 11

under the bridge along U.S. Highway 31. He credits his brother James for helping him to discover his love for fishing and thanks all his friends, family and continued local support throughout the process. Now that Connell has experienced the feeling of winning at the highest level, he knows what it tastes like and wants even more. “It hasn’t really been easy,” Connell said. “I’ve worked so hard to get here, and I feel like I’ve put the time in. The biggest goal is to stay at that level.” Another major influence in helping Connell get to where he is in his career has been the support from Danny Stevens and his family. Connell was born and raised in Chilton County and still calls it home to this day. He graduated from Chilton County High School and the University of Alabama with a bachelor’s degree in marketing. However, fishing was always his first love and something he always pictured as a possible

Connell understands the role that he can play in promoting the sport of fishing, as well as being an example for those that walk the same creeks that he once did growing up. “No one can stop you from doing what you want to do,” Connell said. “I’m proof of that.”

for the project would be strong because during County Commission meetings people had filled the meeting room, hallway and stairs asking for a hospital in Chilton County. The hospital has given local medical offices a place for patients to have X-rays and lab work done without leaving the county. St. Vincent’s Chilton has also supported the greater Chilton County medical community by providing office space leases for specialty doctors. “At the current time, the following medical specialties are available at St. Vincent’s Chilton: Cardiology, Gastroenterology, General Surgery, Nephrology, Obstetrics/ Gynecology, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, Podiatry, Pulmonology and Medical Oncology/

Hematology,” Campbell said. “These services are offered in addition to our 24/7 Emergency Department, advanced imaging and diagnostic services, stress testing, pulmonary function testing, inpatient and intensive care services and laboratory services.” The outpatient wing, where many of these specialty doctors lease space, operates almost at capacity. Technology advances through telemedicine have helped St. Vincent’s Chilton provide a higher level of care for local stroke victims. “St. Vincent’s Chilton now has telestroke capabilities in the Emergency Department that allows for real-time neurology consults for patients who are potentially suffering a stroke, and further allows Emergency Department

physicians’ clinical consultation resources to administer tPA (tissue plasminogen activator),” Campbell said. “This means patients need not travel all the way to Birmingham for stroke care when time is critical.” There are plans to expand the use of telemedicine in the future. In addition to creating the equivalent of 151 full-time jobs, the hospital has provided the opportunity for many in the medical field who had been working out of the county to work closer to home. “Between the hospital and the nursing and medical courses at Jeff State, we are encouraged about our work force,” Janice Hull of the Chilton County Chamber of Commerce said. “In addition to more than 100 jobs, the hospital has been responsible for the addition of other medical offices and support services. It’s a wonderful addition, and I’m so glad that more of our people can work in Chilton County.” Caton said an industry in Chilton County was going to have a significant increase in costs for worker’s compensation coverage because the county did not have a hospital. The construction

16 | Chilton County Chamber Of Commerce

of St. Vincent’s Chilton “helped them keep their worker’s comp rates down,” Caton said. “When our industrial board goes out to recruit different businesses to come out to the county, two major things that people look at are our school system and health care,” Caton said. “We are able to offer the best of both. We have a great school system, and now we have a great health care system.” This is an important component as development of the proposed industrial park moves forward. Expansion of the health care complex is in discussion. Future plans for the campus could include a sleep center, a durable medical equipment store and a medical office building. Campbell said that the medical office building spaces would be full-time leases, rather than the current outpatient facility where an office is leased to different doctors on different days. The Chilton County Health Care Authority would be a partner for the medical office building, just as they were in bringing St. Vincent’s Chilton to reality.

Community of Faith Unique faith establishments add religious flavor to Chilton County STORY BY CAROLINE CARMICHAEL CONTRIBUTED PHOTOS

It is no secret that the Chilton County community offers numerous churches to residents from a variety of traditions. There are, however, several faith establishments that add unique flavor to the religious atmosphere in the county. Among them are the following: En Fuego, River Church and Clear Waters Cowboy Church. River Church River Church is a Clanton First United Methodist Church ministry that has been drawing Chilton County residents to the river — or rather, Lake Mitchell — to worship each summer since 1968, according to River Church Committee Chairman Judge Sibley Reynolds. “We’ve had people that only call themselves 18 | Chilton County Chamber Of Commerce

members of River Church,” Reynolds said. “I mean, they did not attend anywhere else.” Reynolds said the weekly summer service was initiated by former CFUMC Pastor John Trobaugh, who founded the church on his lake home property in 1968. Members met at his boathouse each Sunday during the summer until 1970, when the Chilton County Commission began reserving the Higgins Ferry Pavilion for the meetings. Trobaugh has since died, but his legacy lives on in the John Trobaugh Pavilion at Higgins Ferry Park, which is packed with anywhere from 30 to more than 400 worshippers each Sunday from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Each service opens with a singing of the hymn “Shall We Gather At The River.” “In 30 minutes, you get three songs, some special music, some Scripture, a couple of prayers and an 8- to 12-minute sermon,” Reynolds said. “And you get credit for being

there.” The River Church Committee thanks the Chilton County Commission for the church’s use of the pavilion for its services. Clear Waters Cowboy Church Smack-dab in the center of the Bible belt, Clear Waters Cowboy Church offers a new kind of buckle to the buckaroos that fill its pews each week at the Gray and Sons Stockyard in Clanton. “It’s a church where everybody that doesn’t fit anywhere else can come to and feel comfortable,” Clear Waters Pastor Jim Gunter said. Although “cowboy” may be in its name, Clear Waters Cowboy Church is home to at least 80 Clanton residents with a variety of backgrounds outside the walls of “old western” culture. The congregation does, however, celebrate its western theme with numerous cowboy events throughout the year. Included among these are kids’ rodeos, chuck wagon cook-offs, chute dogging, barrel racing and its annual summer children’s camp in Chelsea. The “interdenominational” establishment was created from the Texas Fellowship of Cowboy Churches to provide a place of

worship for individuals in Clanton who may feel that they don’t “fit in” with church congregations elsewhere, Gunter said. Clanton’s establishment is one of the largest cowboy churches outside of Texas, Gunter said. It is primarily volunteer-run, its leaders holding employment elsewhere. Clear Waters Cowboy Church is located at 803 Logan Road in Clanton. En Fuego En Fuego may be a single, annual event — but it draws tens of thousands to its massive worship music festival in the heart of Verbena. “The goal of the event is to see lives changed,” En Fuego director Kevin George said. “We’re not there just to have a fun music festival, we want people’s lives changed.” Once gates open at noon each year, cars begin filing onto the County Road 23 donated Verbena property, unloading young travelers to fill about 72 acres with worship and prayer. At least 20,000 people attended the 2017 concert, with more than 500 volunteers serving at the event. “It’s just something that everybody seems to rally around and lock arms, and that’s what makes it work,” George said. Learning to grow Chilton County Schools make changes to improve students’ educational experience STORY BY JOYANNA LOVE PHOTOS BY JOYANNA LOVE AND KEITH MCCOY

C

hilton County Schools have seen a number of changes in the past year. Highlights included the addition of Project Lead the Way engineering classes at Chilton County High School and Clanton schools and expansion in the Jemison School system as well as the CCHS STEM Academy. The shifting of grades to different buildings for Jemison Intermediate and Jemison Middle School was another major change. However, many behind20 | Chilton County Chamber Of Commerce

the-scenes changes were also implemented in an effort to better serve and prepare students for life after graduation. A Division of Teaching and Learning has been established with Ashlie Harrison as director. “We started having six central office staff go out and do classroom evaluations looking for best practices,” Glasscock said. “That has been really, really good.” Each week, classrooms are randomly selected with each of the six administrators visiting two classrooms. The administrator and the teachers do not

know who has been selected until the day of the visit. “We try to identify best practices, so if I see a teacher using a method that maybe we haven’t seen before, we come back, and then every Tuesday morning our six meet and discuss those teachers that we evaluated,” Glasscock said. This approach allows the central office employees to compare notes, find best practices and find ways for other principals and teachers to find out about the methods that have been successful in other Chilton County classrooms. The goal is to “establish continuity across the district,” Glasscock said. While there may have been some hesitation about the observations at first, Glasscock said teachers are now excited at the prospect of

being able to “show off best practices.” “Adults are not going to tell you ‘I want you to come in my classroom and see what I’m doing,’ but they really do,” Glasscock said. When a teacher has a best practice that the central office staff feels would be beneficial to other schools, they meet with the principal to set up a time for the teacher to visit other schools. “We have really ramped up our administrator professional development, making good leaders better leaders,” Glasscock said. Programs that have been successful at one school, such as Reflex Math for memorizing basic math facts, have also been implemented at other schools. Glasscock said Reflex Math is good because it gives immediate assessment of a student’s knowledge of basic math facts and Facebook.com/thechiltonchamber | 21

what they need to improve. Glasscock said education needs to get away from a “silo mentality” where each school is only concerned about what is going on in its building. Instead, Glasscock wants principals and teachers to learn from each other, and students to have the opportunity to take the classes that will provide them the most benefit. This is why students are able to apply for the CCHS STEM academy or the Jemison High School Culinary program no matter where they regularly attend school. High School juniors and seniors are continuing to take advantage of dual enrollment opportunities through the Clanton campus of Jefferson State Community College. The 2016-2017 school year was the first time an application and interview process was established for Career Tech through the LeCroy Career Technical Center. This process helps ensure that the students in these classes are those who are really interested in those classes and the field as a potential career. LeCroy has also implemented a simulated work place to give students an experience as close to the workplace environment as

22 | Chilton County Chamber Of Commerce

possible. This school year, the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council was established. The students said they wanted “more effective teaching, more flexibility in their scheduling ... and they were concerned about culture and climate in their schools,” Glasscock said. The Council has also established a survey for students to fill out during school. Glasscock said the project will be student-led and the surveys are 100 percent anonymous. Each school had an assembly explaining the survey, and the students filled it out in class. Students will present the findings of the survey to the central office in January. “I think, for the first time, we have given students a voice in their education,” Glasscock said. Technology continues to be a focus for the school system. After the next round of state technology funds is released, the school system will be extremely close to having a Chromebook for each student. The school system’s preschool program has also grown with the addition of classes at Jemison Elementary.

New opportunities City of Jemison experiences growth during 2017 STORY BY EMILY REED PHOTOS BY ANTHONY RICHARDS

The City of Jemison experienced a large growth in 2017 with more individuals moving to the area and new businesses opening. The city, named after Colonel Robert Jemison Jr., was incorporated in 1907, and is located at the geological end of the Appalachian Mountain Range near the center of the state. Located in north Chilton County, the city sits nestled between Calera and Thorsby, with U.S. Highway 31 serving as a main thoroughfare, and Interstate 65 Exit 219 providing a prime hub for new businesses.

Jemison Mayor Eddie Reed described the city’s recent growth as a “historic time for the city” in early 2017, estimating roughly $8.5 million had been spent by new businesses or relocating businesses to build or remodel in the city in 2017. Some of the businesses to either relocate to Jemison or be built within the city limits during 2017, or are currently under construction, include Concord Travel Center, Texaco, Burger King, a new Dollar General, O’Reilly Auto Parts, Marion Bank and Trust, Porter’s Automotive, Sneaky Pete’s and Suds R Us. Six of the nine businesses are located within the heart of Jemison, near the intersection

of U.S. Highway 31 and County Road 42, which is also a main thoroughfare connecting motorists from I-65 to U.S. Highway 31. The influx of businesses has added jobs and tax revenue for the city, with the Burger King at Exit 219 adding 40 jobs for individuals, alone. Future development is anticipated at Exit 219. Reed said the city has high expectations and are excited about what the future may hold in terms of more businesses locating at the exit. Central Alabama Electric Cooperative serves the Jemison interchange, and according to Connie Bainbridge of CAEC, the city is likely to attract more commercial businesses in the future. “Having a developing interchange, Jemison is poised to attract more commercial businesses,” Bainbridge said. “Working with the City of Jemison is exciting because Mayor Reed and others are very aggressive in recruiting great establishments for their citizens. Increasing their tax base will help

24 | Chilton County Chamber Of Commerce

ensure that the funding is in place to handle the growth they are experiencing. There is more available property at Exit 219, and there will be more announcements of new businesses in the future.” Some key components to facilitating the rapidly growing city have included city officials making changes to the city’s infrastructure. The sewage system received a nearly perfect score, and was approved for updates by the city council to accommodate the growth. A new fire station is being built to better service the city and its residents, and provide a faster response time. Speed limits have been changed with new traffic lights being approved to help improve the roadways. In 2016, a major state-approved project was completed with the resurfacing of County Road 42. One of the city’s main thoroughfares was resurfaced from U.S. Highway 31 to County Road 51, improving road conditions for the large number of motorists traveling the road each day.

‘A big surprise’ Stokes to be named a Retailer of the Year STORY AND PHOTOS BY JOYANNA LOVE

Stokes Automotive in Clanton has been named a Silver Retailer of the Year by the Alabama Retail Association in the More Than 20 Million Sales category. Dealer and company president Kirk Stokes said “it was a big surprise” to find out the dealership was a finalist. “I appreciate it, and I know the Chamber had a lot to do with that. I appreciate all they did to get me nominated for that,” Stokes said. Owner Kirk Stokes received the award at a luncheon ceremony in Birmingham on Oct. 17. Nancy Dennis of the Alabama Retail Association said 14 businesses will be recognized in different sales categories. The local dealership was nominated for the award by the Chilton County Chamber of Commerce in May. An application and letters of recommendation were submitted, and then reviewed by a panel of judges. One of these letters came from an out-of-town customer, and highlighted how

the service at Stokes Automotive went “above and beyond.” Stokes said sometimes people from out of state have car trouble on Interstate 65 and will bring their car in to the service department. “We kind of pride ourselves on helping them out, getting them a hotel and getting the car fixed,” Stokes said. Chamber director Janice Hull said Stokes is involved in the community and a big Chamber supporter. It has been a year of recognition for the dealership. Stokes was

named the Chilton County Chamber of Commerce’s Business of the Year at the 2016 Chamber banquet. “We work real hard, and we try to sell everyone that comes into the dealership,” Stokes said. He said he wants the dealership to have a reputation for good prices and service. Stokes moved to its location on I-65, Exit 212 next to the giant peach eight years ago. Stokes said the move has made it easier for those coming from out of town to find the business. Business in

both the sales and service departments has increased since the relocation. “We are a lot more visible now,” Stokes said. The company slogan “We clobber big city prices” was adopted when the business moved to Exit 212. Representatives from the Alabama Retail Association came to Clanton on Aug. 3 to interview Stokes and Hull for a video that was shown at the awards presentation. The glass 2017 Retailer of the Year trophy is now on display in the Stokes showroom.
