BIRTH OF A CITY, BIRTH OF A STATE

T

he historic Stutsman County Courthouse opened with great fanfare in 1883. The residents of Jamestown were just a decade removed from living in a tent city along a railroad line that was still under construction. With the completion of the courthouse, they had a substantial building to conduct the business of local government. The building stood tall in red-brick pride above mostly vacant land. Jamestown, as it existed at that time, was mostly gathered along the railroad tracks blocks to the northwest of the new seat of county government. The year 1883 was an important one in the region. The Northern Pacific Railroad completed its transcontinental line. Instead of being a little stop on a railroad that deadended somewhere to the west, Jamestown became a stop on a ribbon of steel that connected the Pacific Ocean to the Great Lakes. According to the motto of the Northern

GEOCACHI NG A high tech outdoor game that uses a GPS receiver or GPS enabled smartphone app to find containers (geocaches) hidden by other players. Geocaches can range in size from the size of your thumb to a 5 gallon pail. Many contain trade items with the expectation that you leave something of equal value. All geocaches contain a log sheet for the player to sign to verify their visit to the cache. Some of geocaches in Jamestown are part of the “Jamestown Geocaching Challenge”, where the player has to find at least fifteen of twenty listed geocaches and record the code written on the cache in a passbook. Once completed, the player

can turn in their passbook to the Jamestown Tourism Office to receive a limited edition buffalo shaped tag. Players can pick up a copy of the Jamestown Geocaching Challenge Passbook from the outdoor brochure rack at the Jamestown Tourism Office located at: 404 Louis L’Amour Lane Jamestown, North Dakota N46° 53.382 W098°42.170 Within 30 miles of Jamestown, there are approximately 150 caches. An introductory guide to geocaching can be found at www.geocaching.com/ guide.

Greetings from

THE UNIVERSITY OF JAMESTOWN

W

hether you are in our fair city on a business trip, vacation, or looking to move to Jamestown, I would like to welcome you and share a little bit about the University of Jamestown. UJ was founded in 1883 by Presbyterian settlers as Jamestown College, before North Dakota received statehood. Several years ago, our name was changed to the University of Jamestown, to better reflect the breadth of our educational offerings. Today, the University values its roots in the Presbyterian tradition and continues a relationship with its founding denomination. We cherish our humble beginnings and continue to hold fast to the Christian and liberal arts traditions that shape our programs and curriculum. We are very appreciative of the early Jamestown settlers who worked to bring the University to our city and value the continued relationship of mutual

support that we have with the city of Jamestown. University of Jamestown is a private, liberal arts university granting bachelor of arts, bachelor of science, and bachelor of science in nursing degrees as well as master’s degrees in education, leadership, and clinical counseling, and a doctor of physical therapy degree. Our Fargo campus houses the Physical Therapy program and Master of Arts in Leadership program. The University of Jamestown offers more than 40 areas of undergraduate study. Our unique undergraduate approach to education, the Journey to Success, emphasizes not only preparing students academically in their chosen areas of study, but also preparing students through an experience that is student-centered and integrates the liberal arts with sound professional programs. This approach includes components of selfreflection, student service,

diversity, and preparation for the student’s future career resulting in graduates who are critical thinkers who are able to communicate in today’s diverse world. While our student body is primarily from North Dakota and Minnesota, we have representation from 30 states and 20 foreign countries. The University has developed several international partnerships and actively sends students to Italy, India, Costa Rica and Africa. The faculty of the University are a dedicated group of educators who are committed to the success of our students. With 65 fulltime undergraduate faculty, the average student-faculty ratio is 12:1. A member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference of the NAIA, the University of Jamestown “Jimmies” have 16 varsity teams, 5 junior varsity teams, an ACHA Division I Hockey Team, an e-Sports team and Cheer and Dance teams. Slightly over

50% of our student body participates in at least one sport, and many are multisport athletes. For those non-athletes, the University boasts a wide array of other activities from which to choose, including: concert band, concert and chapel choir, musical theatre, dramatic theatre, and over 40 student organizations. I hope you enjoy your time in Jamestown. I invite you to stop up and see us anytime!

Sincerely, Dr. Polly Peterson President University of Jamestown

music singer, songwriter, and actress who lived and worked in this very depot from 1934 to 1937. In 1934, Marvin Egstrom became the depot agent and moved in with his family. His daughter, Norma Deloris

Egstrom, better known as Peggy Lee, helped him run it. The large living room upstairs in the depot is dedicated entirely to Peggy Lee’s life, career, and music.

This historic site consists of two sites telling the story of the Cold War years in North Dakota. They are the last remnants of the 321st Missile Wing, a cluster of intercontinental ballistic missile launch based out of Grand Forks Air Force Base. These facilities played an integral part in the Cold War. The Oscar-Zero Missile Alert facility is a guided tour to the underground Launch Control Equipment Building and Launch Control Center where you can see firsthand the front lines of the United States’ strategy of nuclear deterrence. The November-33 is a topside of a launch facility. It is a self guided tour of the sites the Missile Alert Facility controlled.
