Amino Acid The chief component of proteins, of which 14 are essential for delivering proper nutrition to the human body. Anti-Oxidant Fights the aging process - Anti (against) - Oxidants (oxygen) fights oxidation. Oxidation is the cause of aging and leads to making the body susceptible to diseases. Oxidation is a deterioration of the body much like rust (a form of oxidation) deteriorates metal. It is a naturally occurring substance that combats the negative effects of oxygen called oxidative stress. Bioavailable Easily absorbed by the body. Centenarian Anyone reaching the age of 100 or greater. Chelation Chelate – Greek prefix meaning: “Claw” A term used to describe a resulting compound when a mineral is bound or stuck to certain carrier molecules, in this case a “claw-like appearance” of two amino acids (ligands) on each side. A patented amino acid chelated will increase the absorption into the human body by 400% – 600%. Free Radical Molecule A term used to describe a negatively charged molecule that is produced in the oxidative process that has been identified as the cause of cellular damage in all living things and contributes to aging.

ORAC Values ORAC measures the Anti-Oxidant Values in Fruits, Whole Foods & Products containing Anti-Oxidants. In 1997, Dr. Richard Cutler and two of his students were credited with the invention of the ORAC Method which originally only included the test for the Peroxyl radical. Today the ORAC Value System has expanded to include 5 tests and is used around the world. “Total ORAC Complex Value” is a laboratory measurement of a substance’s Anti-Oxidant potential to absorb reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, commonly referred to as free radicals. Most companies only test for the Peroxyl radical. VíaVienté tests for “The Total ORAC Complex Value” consisting of these 5 tests: 1.) ORAC Test Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity The ORAC analysis measures a substance’s ability to protect the body against the peroxyl radical. 2.) HORAC Test Hydroxyl Radical Absorbance Capacity The HORAC analysis measures a substance’s ability to protect the body against the hydroxyl radical. 3.) NORAC Test Nitrite Radical Absorbance Capacity The NORAC analysis measures a substance’s ability to protect the body against the peroxynitrite radical. 4.) PhytoTonic Phyto – Greek prefix meaning: “To bring forth from a plant.” Tonic – “a liquid healing agent that invigorates and restores.” The term PhytoTonic was coined by Dr. Mark Pedersen to describe a health promoting tonic like the one presented in this book. Polyphenyl Polyphenyls are the natural Anti-Oxidant agents found in fruits. They are most often found in the protective skins or regenerative seeds of plants. They give the yellow to a banana, red to an apple and blue to a blueberry. Components with polyphenyls act as scavengers in the body, sweeping out damaging free radicals. Polyphenyls are also thought to have the capability of repairing cellular DNA and helping ward off long-term damage. Puree Any food that is processed into a smooth, thick consistency. VíaVienté combines mineral-rich Vilcabamba Spring Water with a blend of Whole Fruit Purees to capture all of their nutritional value in a drinkable form. Searching for the Secret to Long-life and Vitality in Vilcabamba 1936 – U.S. Government Printing Office reprints an article by Rex Beach entitled “Modern Miracle Men” establishing the knowledge that minerals are the key to human nutrition and pointing out the deficiencies in U.S. agricultural food products. 1954 – Dr. Eugene H. Payne, clinical investigator for Parke Davis Pharmaceuticals, publishes an account in Reader’s Digest about the virtual absence of heart disease in the Valley of Vilcabamba in Loja Province. 1969 – Dr. Miguel Salvador, an internationally known cardiologist living in Quito, Ecuador, becomes interested in Vilcabamba after learning of the reports that residents of the village never suffer heart attacks. He undertakes a major research project in the area on behalf of the Ecuadorian government. 1970 – Dr. Alexander Leaf, Harvard Medical School, is commissioned by National Geographic to investigate the claims of an abundance of centenarians in three regions of the world, the land of Hunza in the Karakoram Range in Pakistan, the Caucasus in Georgian Russia and the Sacred Valley of the Vilcabamba, Loja Province, Ecuador. His article “Every Day is a Gift When You Are Over 100” appeared in the January 1973 issue of National Geographic. 1973 – Dr. David Davies, a British gerontologist, publishes his first account in the New Scientist. Davies reports that “Hypertension, heart disease and cancer are comparatively uncommon” in Vilcabamba. University of Quito investigated the area’s river water from which most of the Vilcabamba inhabitants drink, “in a search for chemical factors which might be responsible for the longevity.” 1978 – The National Institute on Aging and the Fogerty International Center sponsor an international meeting regarding Vilcabamba. Dr. Alexander Leaf is co-chairman of the workshop, which includes researchers from Japan, Canada, France, Ecuador and the U.S. who conducted research in Vilcabamba. Collectively, their findings report that the Vilcabambans experience better health, longer lives and above average coronary and bone health as compared to other populations. 1981 – Dr. Morton Walker, a medical journalist visits Vilcabamba to obtain samples of water, food and hair for analysis. I also review records in Vilcabamba’s Lieutenant General’s office, the Civil Registrar’s office, the local church and the Provincial Council of Loja to determine whether the centenarian claims are authentic. I interview several of the centenarians and investigates their diet, drinking water and lifestyle. Laboratory analysis of the samples collected by me reveal that the Vilcabamba water and food supply contains what I described as “the perfect combination of trace minerals and other elements deemed necessary for maintaining a balanced body chemistry.” The villagers’ hair analyses confirm the food and water findings. 1983 – Dr. Harvey Ashmead, Albion Labs, after having secured a number of patents for mineral chelation for human consumption, becomes the renowned expert on mineral chelation and the natural chelation processes that occur in the mineral waters of Vilcabamba. 1989 – Dr. DeWayne Ashmead, President of Albion Labs, publishes his book Conversations on Chelation and Mineral Nutrition. It contains his findings on mineral chelation, originally designed to support farm animal and crop production, and its benefits for human consumption and advanced nutritional supplementation.

1991 – Craig Keeland, Founder and C.E.O. of VíaVienté, asks the question, “Can you slow down the aging process to live a longer and younger life?” Craig’s goal is to develop an anti-aging product that combines all the “Best from nature with the best from science.” After reading Dr. Harvey Ashmead’s book, Craig insists that chelated minerals be an essential ingredient in his future anti-aging products. 1991 – After much research in the science of anti-aging, Craig Keeland seeks out Dr. Richard Cutler, National Institute on Aging. Dr. Cutler is credited with 16 years of research as well as verifying the role of Anti-Oxidants in fighting free radicals and thereby slowing the aging process. 1991 – Craig Keeland meets Dr. Harvey Ashmead who shares a copy of my 1981 manuscript, Secrets of Long Life. My manuscript confirms that the mineral profile of the Vilcabamban’s water is a key factor in the villagers’ remarkable health. 1991 – Craig Keeland meets me and I share my findings in my newly re-published book Secrets of Long Life. 1991 – Craig Keeland travels to Vilcabamba to confirm his belief that the “Fountain of Youth” can be found in the pristine waters that cascade from high in the Andes Mountains down to the village. He brings back a sample of water to be tested. 1991 – Dr. Harvey Ashmead and Dr. Mark Pedersen successfully assay the mineral profile from Vilcabamba’s water which becomes known as Vilcabamba Mineral Essence (VME). Craig asks Dr. Pedersen to formulate a good tasting tonic, combining VME with Anti-Oxidants and herbs. Due to technological limitations which kept them from eliminating the bitterness in a tonic form of the minerals and whole foods consumed by the Vilcabambans, Dr. Pedersen went on a “scientific mission” to resolve the problem.

1992 – Life, Reader’s Digest, Newsweek and Longevity magazines publish articles about anti-aging technologies and advances in nutritional supplementation sparking the Anti-Oxidant Revolution. After reading these articles and posting them throughout the halls of his company, Craig Keeland is convinced that he has made the right choice to become a leader in anti-aging product development. He confirms his decision to require “Pharmaceutical Standards” for all of his products. 1993 – High Society magazine in Dallas covers Craig Keeland’s Vilcabamba trip to discover “The Fountain of Youth” and dubs him the “Ponce de Leon for the 21st Century.” The article also mentions Keeland’s “Great Water Taste-Off,” featuring Vilcabamba water. 1994 – Craig Keeland is invited to Dr. Linus Pauling’s home. Keeland shares his vision for anti-aging with the 93-year-old two-time Nobel Prize Winner, known as the “Father of Vitamin C.” Pauling “Passes the Torch” for “A Better Nutritional Future” to Keeland. This was Pauling’s last known interview. He passes away only five months later. 2003 – Craig Keeland again commissions Dr. Mark Pedersen, now with another leading nutritional products manufacturer, to develop a tonic delivery system for the Vilcabamba Mineral Essence and the powerful Anti-Oxidants found in Vilcabamba’s equatorial fruits and herbs. Using recent advances in scientific technologies, Pedersen successfully develops a good tasting “Whole fruit and herbal PhytoTonic” from homogenized (broken into small particles) “PhytoNectars.” He then adds the VME, making this new formula a revolutionary delivery system for the “Best from Vilcabamba.” 2003 – Dr. Richard Cutler, is now Scientific Director for The Kronos Group, a company dedicated exclusively to anti-aging technologies. The “Sacred Valley” of the Centenarians

Founded by the Spanish in 1756, Vilcabamba is a tiny village in a Rainforest High in the Andes Mountains in the southwest corner of Ecuador. There, the Spanish encountered the Quechua Indians, possible ancestors to the Incas who had inhabited the Valley for centuries. The modern people of Vilcabamba are thought to be a mixture of the Spanish explorers and the Quechua Indians. The Vilcabamba Valley sits at the foothills of the Andes Mountains at an elevation of approximately 5,000 feet. It boasts the amazing claim of being one of the few places on earth that was not affected by the Ice Age. Surrounding the Valley and rising high into the Andes Mountains is Podocarpus National Park, a national reserve and one of the world’s few remaining rain forests, known for its Pre-Ice Age microorganisms. Falling rain settles into the tundra in the heart of the preserve, saturating the area with thousands of pools filled with the most organically mineral-rich spring waters in the world. tundra and winds its way through the mountains, it absorbs organic minerals and is forced by gravity to seek portals throughout the Valley from which to emerge. The places where this water emerges are the natural springs, which are abundant throughout the Valley. Just two miles from the center of the village lies one of these ancient springs, believed to have been utilized by the Incas. Here the soil has an unusual pinkish tint. About two miles further up toward the Warrango Ridge is another spring. It is likely that people have visited this spring for centuries, possibly going back to Incan times, as evidenced by markings on the surrounding rocks. These springs contribute to the volume of water flowing down the Valley and into the center of Vilcabamba. The purist and richest of these waters flows some 200 feet below the surface of the river valley in artesian wells that deposit this mineral-rich water. The water tested from these wells shows a higher content of essential minerals. This water is the source for the Vilcabamba Mineral Essence used in the All Natural Whole Food Puree, VíaVienté. The very essence of life itself, water, is considered sacred by the inhabitants. The old ones of the village say, “From the throne (the Andes) of the Sacred One (God) comes the elixir of life.” Local legend identifies the Valley as the original Garden of Eden. The modern world considers people over the age of 65 to be elderly. In Vilcabamba, these elderly engage in hard work well beyond what is considered the age of retirement in the rest of the world, enabling the Vilcabambans to remain contributing members of the community throughout their lives. What is most remarkable, however, is the absence of disease among the population. The Gift of Vilcabamba What do the people of Vilcabamba have to teach us? When Dr. Eugene H. Payne’s article about the Vilcabamban region was published in Reader’s Digest in 1954, it sparked an avalanche of scientific interest in the area. Dr. Payne had traveled there to investigate the story of a British engineer who had retired to Loja to spend his few remaining years in the Province. Though high blood pressure had severely damaged his heart, surprisingly, Payne found him in good health. The man reported to Payne that as long as he stayed in Loja he seemed well, but whenever he left the region, his blood pressure zoomed and his heart gave him trouble. Dr. Payne also noted that heart disease was almost unknown among the inhabitants of the 4400 square mile province. 1 In 1969, Dr. Miguel Salvador, an internationally known cardiologist living in Quito, became interested in Vilcabamba after hearing reports that residents there never suffered heart attacks. He undertook a major research project in the area on behalf of the Ecuadorian government, surveying 340 randomly selected Vilcabambans of all ages. Of all the villagers Dr. Salvador surveyed, only one showed signs of having a weak heart. Dr. Salvador reported a high proportion of villagers over the age of 65, however, it was their level of physical activity that caught his attention: “I was impressed, however; not because people were living to be more than 100, but because they were so active, with minds and bodies you’d expect in men and women who were 60 or 70.” Salvador’s findings were published in 1972 in an Ecuadorian paper titled “Vilcabamba: Tierra de Longevos.” ²

Dr. David Davies, a British gerontologist visiting Quito in 1971, heard of Salvador’s Vilcabamban findings and arranged to visit the region. During the next two years he made three additional trips to the area and published his first account in the February 1973 issue of New Scientist. Dr. Davies stated that, “Hypertension, heart disease and cancer are comparatively uncommon. Death is usually the result of an accident or of catching influenza from the few outsiders who visit the place.” He also noted that baptismal certificates for Vilcabambans appeared authentic and that they confirmed both the longevity of current inhabitants as well as those who were deceased. Davies’ report mentioned that scientists from the National University of Quito were investigating the area’s spring water, from which most of the inhabitants drank, “in a search for chemical factors which might be responsible for the longevity.”3 In the early 1970’s, Dr. Alexander Leaf, chief of medical services at Massachusetts General Hospital and professor of clinical medicine at Harvard, was commissioned by the National Geographic Society to visit areas of the world where centenarians were supposed to be plentiful. When Dr. Leaf visited Vilcabamba, he observed: “In Vilcabamba, the community was Catholic, and church baptismal records confirmed some of the ages claimed there. Some could also be supported by the number of generations of offspring, and by testimony from friends and relatives of similar age. A census taken in 1971 showed that Vilcabamba, with a population of only 819, had 9 individuals above the age of 100. In the United States, by comparison, the figure is about 3 centenarians per 100,000 population. The average daily diet provided 1,200 calories. The daily protein intake was 35 to 38 grams, and of fat only 12 to 19 grams; 200 to 260 grams of carbohydrate completed the diet. from animal sources. Needless to say, one sees no obesity among the elderly in Vilcabamba, neither were there signs of under-nutrition.” 4 Vilcabamba is a tranquil community that allows its inhabitants freedom from most of the stress that confront modern society. Certainly this lack of stress contributes to their longevity. Dr. Leaf also recorded that regular sexual activity is an important factor in reaching extreme old age. In Vilcabamba, part of the natural flow of life is the continuation of sexual activity throughout the elder years. By the mid-1970s, the long-lived Vilcabambans had become the focus of global scientific excitement. In 1974, filmmaker Gene Ayers released his film titled Valley of the Old Ones. David Davies’ book The Centenarians of the Andes was published in 1975 in Great Britain. McGraw Hill released Dr. Leaf’s book Youth in Old Age the same year. The following year, Rodale Press published Grace Halsell’s book Los Viejos – Secrets of Long Life from the Sacred Valley. And a second documentary film was released titled, Longevity – To Live to Be 140. Each one of the scientists involved in documenting the vitality of the Vilcabambans confirmed that many of the villagers were well past 100 years of age. But more than their longevity was of interest. All of the elderly inhabitants were healthy, active and mentally alert. On February 27 – 28, 1978, the National Institute on Aging and the Fogerty International Center sponsored an international meeting concerning Vilcabamba. Dr. Alexander Leaf was appointed co-chairman of the workshop, which included researchers from Japan, Canada, France, Ecuador and the United States who had worked in Vilcabamba. Their findings showed that the importance of Vilcabamba was not simply in the area of longevity but also in the apparent good health of its elderly. Addressing the health aspects, Dr. Miguel Salvador reported that 44% of the elderly in Vilcabamba showed normal electrocardiograms, and only 30% showed definitely abnormal electrocardiograms, compared to 80% to 90% abnormality in other Ecuadorian and American populations. © 2009 GP Publishing - All Rights Reserved

Other researchers noted that the Vilcabamba elderly shared five unusual characteristics: • They were not overweight, and in fact were relatively thin • They had lower blood pressure than expected; rarely hypertension • They had lower than usual blood cholesterol values • They had lower heart rates, especially after exertion • Measurements of the Vilcabambans’ bone structure showed the usual bone loss common with aging in other populations, but they appeared to be free of symptoms of osteoporosis, like spinal curvature, pain and fractures common in other populations.5

Secrets of Long Life At the invitation of the Ecuadorian Government, I visited Vilcabamba in November 1981 as an unbiased medical journalist to obtain samples of water, food and hair for analysis, to try to determine why the villagers were living to such an old age in perfect health. Laboratory analysis of the samples I collected revealed that the Vilcabamba water and food contained:

“...optimum amounts of trace minerals and other elements deemed necessary for maintaining a balanced body chemistry.”6 In my book Secrets of Long Life – How to remain healthy, sexual and actively working beyond 100, which I published upon my return from Vilcabamba, I reported my belief that the Vilcabambans’ health practices could be adapted for increasing the life expectancy of Western industrialized people. I concluded that the Vilcabambans’ long lives were due to what they ate, the balanced minerals in Vilcabamba drinking water, the amount of exercise in their daily activity, maintaining sexual intimacy well into advanced age, a pollution-free environment and peace of mind that permeates their outlook on most situations.

Food Supply In evaluating the villagers’ food supply, no chemical additives were included in food preparation. Food was organically grown and traditionally served in moderate portions. The people ate fresh, whole food newly picked from the fields, trees, vines and bushes. Almost no packaged, bottled, canned or boxed prepared foods were imported. Their diet was based on yucca, potatoes, rice and grains that provided substantial fiber. The high fiber component of their diet appeared to act as a natural chelating agent to protect them against carcinogens and kept their blood cholesterol levels extremely low. Physical Activity Vilcabambans maintain a habit of physical activity all of their lives. That exercise from laboring in the fields kept their muscles strong, joints movable and vital organs functioning well. When a person exercises, lactic acid is generated, which also acts as a chelating agent to protect from carcinogens. Elderly Vilcabambans generated much lactic acid in their muscles during vigorous physical labor. Lactic acid subsequently coursed through their arteries to clean them of atherosclerotic plaque. Exercise also kept their blood circulating so that brain cells were well fed with glucose and oxygen. I saw no symptoms related to senility or Alzheimer’s disease among the Vilcabambans. Johan Bjorksten, Ph.D., the developer of the cross-linkage theory of aging, supports his claims regarding the importance of exercise in Rejuvenation. “That certain exercise is beneficial for health is no longer doubted. This has mostly been ascribed to improvements in circulation and in muscle tone. It is an established fact that the lactic acid or lactate content of the blood is about doubled during the time of moderate muscular exertion, and declines to the normal level abruptly, in a few minutes. Since lactic acid is a fair-to-good chelating agent, it may help remove from the system potentially crosslinking aluminum, cadmium, mercury, lead, arsenic and excess iron, among others, thereby increasing longevity if depletion of the needed chelatable metals manganese, cobalt, zinc, iron and perhaps molybdenum is counteracted by the supplement medication or a couple of quarts daily of skim milk. © 2009 GP Publishing - All Rights Reserved

The (time x mass) product of circulation-elevated lactic acid is more dependent on the duration of muscular exertion than on its intensity. Therefore, predictable beneficial effects are achieved from exercise such as walking, jogging, rowing, skiing and swimming where an elevated lactic acid content of blood is maintained regularly and for a considerable time.” Pollution-Free Environment I also measured air quality in Vilcabamba, determining that the air purity there is higher than almost anywhere else in the world. This may be in part because of the Huilco tree, a main source of dispersing negatively charged ions into the air in the region. Positively charged toxic ions produce a negative effect in most living organisms, especially people. The aged come down with respiratory complaints, and asthma sufferers wheeze and gasp. In contrast, a preponderance of negative ions gives a feeling of exhilaration. The Japanese, after testing the negative ion environment of Vilcabamba, duplicated this condition in their hospitals and reported remarkable healing time, especially in their burn patients. Herbology Medicinal plants grow naturally and in quantity in the Sacred Valley. For centuries, the natives have made use of their miraculous curative qualities. These medicinal herbs, plants and animals were often cultivated, bred and prepared in the villagers’ homes, in patches next to their vegetable gardens or mixed among the food plants themselves. Modern medicine was not practiced in the region until relatively recently when scientists and doctors arrived in the Valley with their technology and modern methods, only to rediscover the organic practices of the villagers. The Mineral-Rich Drinking Water As I observed the Vilcabambans’ lifestyle, I came to believe that their drinking water contained the primary secrets of the villagers’ long lifespans. Chelation (pronounced key-LAY-shon) is derived from the Greek word chele meaning claw. In effect, the chelate substance gives a firm, pincer-like binding of certain chemicals to bivalent metals or other minerals. The chemical process of chelation incorporates the metal or mineral ion into a heterocyclic ring structure. Certain chemicals such as the enzyme bromelain found in fresh pineapple or the enzyme papain in papaya, both of which Vilcabambans eat regularly, close the ring structure and grasp heavy metals with the claw-like action. They are encircled or sequestered by the complex ring, thereby losing their toxic properties. Toxic metals that are chelated out of the Vilcabambans’ bodies include lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic, aluminum, nickel, copper, calcium and others. Thus, the Vilcabambans don’t suffer from heavy metal toxicity, which may be one reason they frequently live such long lives. Toxic minerals trapped in the body cells of people living in industrialized Western nations are a result of the high levels of air, water and food pollution that come from advanced technology. These minerals create the elevated incidence of degenerative disease such as cancer, heart and artery problems, diabetes, kidney disease, sexual disorders, varicose veins, lupus erythematosus, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, liver disease, arthritis, cataracts and others. Vilcabambans living in the high Andes Mountains of Ecuador where there are no factories, smokestacks, industrial wastes, automobile exhaust, foods with additives or impure water avoid degeneration of the body’s cells due to pollution. The latest preventive medical research unmistakably shows the weakening of the basic body chemistry in modern man and the breakdown of his immune system have resulted from two factors: • Nutritional inadequacy in the processed food Westerners eat • Abundant build-up of toxic heavy metals in the cells The lack of contaminants that might cause degenerative disease is a factor in the villagers’ lifestyle. Vilcabambans avoid impurities of all sorts and chelate out of their bodies any possible stressors, in the form of pollutants or carcinogens, by the natural oral chelating agents they get from their organic foods. On my return, I brought samples of the Vilcabamban drinking water back to the United States for analysis by MineraLab, Inc., a trace mineral analysis laboratory in Hayward, California. From my collective observations and lab analysis of their drinking water, I concluded that the primary reason the Vilcabamban centenarians remained in perfect mineral balance, was because of their organic mineral water. The Vilcabambans get this balance of minerals by drinking the rainwater that collects in mountain lakes 12,000 feet above sea level in lush vegetarian pools. Then as more rain comes, it pushes the water from pool to pool farther down the mountain and meanders down the mountains over rocks, soil and other mineral deposits. At the elevation of approximately 4,000 – 6,000 feet, where most Vilcabambans live, they dip water out of artesian wells, quiet pools, rushing streams or flowing rivers and use it for cooking, washing and drinking. I found this water to contain minerals in a perfect balance to promote excellent health. John A. Myers, MD Writing in the Journal of Applied Nutrition, John A. Myers, MD, of Baltimore, Maryland, supports my theory that the longevity of the Vilcabambans can be traced directly to the minerals in their drinking water and diet. “Each of these communities is situated in a Valley supplied with water which washes silt from a mountain behind them…These people drink the silted water. They fertilize crops with it; they eat the flesh and milk of animals raised on it and have a constant supply of trace elements throughout their lives that is good or better than any other place on earth.” “These people maintain their health and longevity from activation of enzymes of their cells by these mineral elements supplied to them in a fortuitously balanced concentration.” Mineral Content of the Centenarians’ Cells While in Vilcabamba, I also took numerous hair samples to analyze them for trace minerals. easily measured in hair tissues. Through laboratory analysis of hair strands, one can measure the balance of minerals in the body. I performed Hair and Mineral Analyses on forty adults and ten children under age ten. The oldest living Vilcabamban from whom I took hair samples for mineral analysis was 131-year old Jose Maria Roa. Comparing the children’s analyses to the adults provided clues as to whether the villagers’ potential longevity was an inherited trait or acquired from their lifestyle. I concluded that lifestyle was the key. Hair mineral analyses showed no common genetic mineral trait between adults and children. However, I found a definite similarity among the centenarian mountain people who all displayed similar hair concentrations of the same minerals. The children, on the other hand, who came from the village center, often consumed processed foods such as soft drinks and packaged sweets. They had hair analyses similar to that of Westerners. The hair mineral analyses conducted by MineraLab, Inc., also indicated that the reason these Ecuadorians live so long is directly related to the minerals ingested in their water and food. “The water and unprocessed food produce a type of chelation process in their bodies – particularly the blood vessels. Additionally, other lifestyle factors such as their daily exercise, breathing the pure air with its negative ions and the non-stressful community living contribute to their longevity. Degenerative diseases such as cancer, heart attack, arthritis, kidney disease, Alzheimer’s disease, cataracts, liver disease, glaucoma, diabetes, senility, stroke and others don’t strike them.” I also noticed that while these killer diseases were not present in the Vilcabamban centenarians, they were prevalent in larger Ecuadorian cities to the same degree as in the United States. Upon examining the public health records of Quito, Loja and Guayaquil, I discovered that the average Ecuadorian lives for 74 years. The old ones of Vilcabamba live approximately 50% longer. I also concluded that the Vilcabamban lifestyle protects them from heavy metal poisoning. The chelating mechanisms produced by optimal exercise, by drinking mineral water and eating fresh food packed with vitamins, minerals, enzymes, hormones and other nutritional substances appears to protect them from heavy metal toxicity and other causes of degenerative diseases. ents in the process of being dried, stored, refined, frozen or canned; or because they have been grown in depleted or chemically treated soils. In contrast to North Americans, the elderly of Vilcabamba do not suffer excessive calcium-causing disease. One reason may be the natural calcium antagonist manganese, which appears to be bioavailable in the Vilcabamba environment. Since this mineral is biounavailable in the North American environment, Americans are victims of more than 6 million spontaneous bone fractures each year. Upon further study of the laboratory analyses of the Vilcabambans’ hair and water samples, I concluded: Vilcabamba’s water, termed ‘elixir of life’ contains a rich and seemingly ideal combination of minerals. The laboratory analysis of the samples, conducted for over a year by MineraLab, Inc., revealed that the nutrient concentration contents of the centenarians’ bodies and their mineral drinking water exactly match. Gordon of MineraLab, Inc., also concluded that: “The drinking water of Vilcabamba prevents hardening of the arteries and the causes of degenerative illnesses such as heart attacks, glaucoma, diabetes, senility, cerebral hemorrhage and other medical problems.” 6 In 2005, at the invitation of Craig Keeland, I returned to Vilcabamba to reacquaint myself with old friends, such as Jaime Mendoza, who owned the hotel in which I stayed during my first trip in 1981. That statement, printed by the U.S. Government Printing Office in an article by Rex Beach, a staff member of the 74th Congress in 1936 summarized some of the findings of Dr. Charles Northern, a pioneer in the field of nutrition. Beach continued in his article to point out that, “No longer does a balanced and fully nourishing diet consist merely of so many calories or certain vitamins of a fixed proportion of starches, proteins and carbohydrates. Chelation When we ingest a mineral, the body must bind that mineral to the correct amino acid in order to be used by the body. Since amino acids are not always available in the correct amounts, as little as 30% of that mineral may actually be absorbed by the body. Chelation improves absorption by 400 – 600%. Before non-chelated minerals can be absorbed by the body, they must be chelated or complexed in the stomach or intestinal tract or in the intestinal wall prior to entering the intestinal cells and ultimately the bloodstream. This natural chelation is not a simple process and is dependent upon a number of variables. That is why absorption of non-chelated minerals is so low. Dr. H. For our organic bodies to absorb particles of inorganic minerals, those minerals have to become in some measure organic. This is accomplished by bonding amino acids from hydrolyzed protein to metallic atoms. This process occurs naturally in the growth of the plant or animal, which eventually is eaten. The resulting molecule is an amino acid chelate and is available for absorption by the body, with consequent use of the mineral, in a way that the non-chelated minerals or improperly-chelated minerals cannot be.” Dr. DeWayne Ashmead’s goal is to require that all mineral supplements on the market be required to measure up to the highest standards of absorption established by amino acid chelated minerals so that the consumer will benefit from these advances in technology. “If this is truly the Fountain of Youth for these centenarians of Vilcabamba, I will dedicate my life to duplicating the Essence of this water and sharing it with the world!” Craig Keeland, 1991 In 1979, Craig Keeland, launched a company that would position him in the growing nutritional supplements market. At the time he was only 24 years old. When he was 29, he asked himself, “Why can’t I look and feel the way I do right now for sixty or even seventy more years? Why, if man is engineered to live 120 years, does old age begin at 65? Why do some people like Dick Clark never seem to age? Why can’t people Live Longer in a State of Youthfulness?” As he pondered those thoughts, he told himself that he would find the answers to those questions, even if it took him the rest of his life. Being an avid reader, Craig began noticing a series of articles about the aging baby-boomer population and the growing desire to live longer and be more active in retirement. For Craig, this presented a paradox. If in fact, people were living longer but not living well, there didn’t seem to be a significant advancement in the quality of life as it relates to health. As he dug further, Craig uncovered a series of articles about Dr. Richard Cutler, who at the time was working for The National Institute on Aging at the National Institute of Health in Baltimore, Maryland. Craig read articles about the Anti-Oxidant Revolution and began seeing products with more potent formulations of vitamins C, B, A, Beta Carotene and others hitting the shelves. Additionally, Craig found numerous articles about “Chelated” minerals, describing how the mineral contributes to human health. In these articles, the name Dr. Harvey Ashmead kept recurring. Dr. Ashmead, founder of Albion Laboratories, had successfully patented the process of chelation using amino acids so minerals could be delivered directly to targeted areas of the body with mineral deficiencies. Along with Ashmead, the name Dr. Mark Pedersen kept surfacing. Dr. Pedersen, a world-renowned Herbalist, had written the reference book that herbalists use when they need more knowledge regarding a particular herb. Dr. Ashmead replied vaguely that there were studies being done, but that scientists knew too little about chelation to have significant long-term results in evidence. After countless meetings, Craig left confused and unsure why Dr. Ashmead was so reluctant to share the depth of his knowledge. Then Craig had a brainstorm. It occurred to him that Dr. Ashmead did not believe Craig was serious, and that like so many others before him, he was just out to exploit the life work of Dr. Ashmead. Craig went to the bank, drafted a $5,000 cashier’s check and mailed it to Dr. Ashmead. About three weeks later, while wondering if he’d just wasted $5,000, Craig’s phone rang. It was Dr. Ashmead saying, “You’ve made a believer out of me. You are serious. I want you to come back to Albion as soon as you can. I’ve got something I need to share with you.” Craig immediately booked a flight and within 24 hours was back at Albion Labs. After lunch and several anxious hours, Dr. Ashmead called Mark Pedersen and Craig into his office. He then opened the bottom drawer of his desk, pulled out a manuscript, and laid it on the desk in front of Craig. “Here is your answer. I believe you will find in this manuscript everything you need to know about how to live to be 100 in a state of youthfulness.” Craig picked up the typed manuscript titled Secrets for Long Life (my original document in manuscript form). He went to his hotel and read the manuscript several times. Entranced by the story, Craig learned that I, on my trip to Vilcabamba in 1981, had indeed confirmed that the Vilcabambans do live in perfect balance with the minerals needed to maintain a healthy body and to help us sustain longevity. With help from a friend that he knew in Langley, Virginia, Craig located me and called me on the phone. While scientists like Dr. Charles Northern, Dr. Harvey Ashmead and Dr. DeWayne Ashmead were advancing our understanding of the vital importance of minerals to human health, others were uncovering the equally important role of Anti-Oxidants. Dr. Linus Pauling Dr. Linus Pauling, two time Nobel Prize winner, has the distinction of being the first Anti-Oxidant research pioneer. Dubbed “The Father of Vitamin C” by many of his colleagues, he is also often considered to be the founding father of molecular biology. His work in this field transformed the biological sciences and medicine, providing a base for biotechnology. His landmark book The Nature of the Chemical Bond is frequently cited as the most influential scientific book of the 20th Century. In 1948, Pauling had a sudden insight regarding the fundamental structure of proteins, an insight that had eluded him for more than a decade. Working with a sheet of paper that he folded over at sites where he knew the protein chain could theoretically bend, he discovered that the polypeptide chain, formed from sequences of amino acids, would coil into a particular helical structure which he named the alpha helix. This helix theory was later used by genetic researchers Watson and Crick to identify the double-helix DNA structure that launched the scientific community into a new era in genetic research.

When he was awarded his first Nobel Prize in 1954, the academy cited his seminal work on the nature of the chemical bond and the structure of molecules and crystals. They also acknowledged his application of the resulting concepts to the elucidation of the structure of proteins, specifically the alpha helix. Dr. Pauling’s groundbreaking discoveries set the stage for researchers who would follow him, including Dr. Harvey Ashmead – a pioneer in the fields of chelated minerals and amino acids. Pauling also showed that Anti-Oxidants play an important role in combating the aging process by ridding the body of cell-damaging, free radical molecules. In the skin of the average smoker, one can see the result of the absence of Anti-Oxidants and cumulative oxidative stress. After visiting Vilcabamba in 1991, Craig Keeland conferred with Dr. Cutler regarding the Vilcabamban’s diet and health. Dr. Cutler believed that the fruits grown in Vilcabamba registered a higher Anti-Oxidant value from most other parts of the world. But why would an orange from Vilcabamba have a higher Anti-Oxidant value than an orange from Florida, America’s Orange Capital? The answer lies with radiation levels produced by the sun. At the equator, the sun is directly overhead, delivering radiation at its greatest strength. In other latitudes, the sun’s rays are less direct, reducing the radiation that permeates growing fruits. It is thought that the earth first tilted on its axis during the Ice Age, causing vegetation in the equatorial regions to adapt to higher levels of radiation from direct sunlight. A clinical study is the scientific benchmark for proving whether a treatment is truly effective and that the results of this treatment can be measured over time. The purpose of the investigation was to learn if VíaVienté could reduce the inflammation and resulting pain in people suffering from Osteoarthritis of the knee or hip. The independent research organization teamed with Miami Research Associates to conduct this study of VíaVienté. Bilberry PhytoNectar containing Resveratrol Bilberry is a valuable medicine. In Europe it is a listed drug for improving night blindness, and those from European colonists to South Americans valued it enough to naturalize a variety of Bilberry in the high mountain valleys of the Andes. Bilberry is a blood tonic that has been used to treat vascular and blood disorders, including amenorrhea. It shows positive effects when treating age-related macular degeneration (AMD), varicose veins, thrombosis, and angina. Blueberry PhytoNectar containing Resveratrol The Blueberry (Vaccicium myrtillus) is a close cousin to the Bilberry. Like Bilberry, Blueberry is an important blood tonic and has been used traditionally to treat diabetes, urinary tract infections and indigestion. The anthocyanins in Blueberries, like all dark colored berries, provide them with interesting medicinal effects. In researching the many berry tonics available, I found Blueberries an even more potent source of anthocyanins than their European cousins, with some varieties of Blueberries containing as much as 10% of their dry weight. Blueberries are not as studied as Bilberries, but the few studies so far point out their ability to maintain blood vessels, particularly those in the eyes. Prunes are the perfect complement to balance progesterone dominant constipation during certain phases of the menstrual cycle. Additionally, a recent study showed that the consumption of Prunes may be associated with a lower risk of estrogen dependent cancers, including breast cancer.22 Menopause brings unique cardiovascular risk factors to women. Prune nectar has been shown to promote healthy cholesterol levels, particularly HDL (good) cholesterol in both menopausal and post-menopausal women compensating in part for the reduction of estrogen levels, and helping to maintain a healthy cardiovascular system. Although Egyptians used them to treat acne and other skin disorders, Elderberries are best known for promoting respiratory health, as an aid to surviving the hardships of winter, the common cold and for a long useful life. Cranberry juice has been shown to reduce E. coli and other harmful bacterial growths in the urinary tract. In the 1930s, Joseph Baerman Strauss dreamt of building a bridge across the Golden Gate linking San Francisco to Marin County. After more than four years of construction at a cost of $35 million, the Golden Gate Bridge opened to vehicular traffic on May 28, 1937. Though Strauss only lived a year beyond completion of the bridge, he disproved the conventional wisdom of the time that “no one can bridge the Golden Gate because of insurmountable difficulties which are apparent to all who give thought to the idea.” Since the Golden Gate opened, nearly 1.5 billion people have crossed the 1.7 mile stretch across the bay. An overwhelming majority of Americans today are mineral deficient, which leads to loss of energy, a lowered metabolism and decreased immune function. If you do not have access to these higher potency organic Equatorial fruits, it is important to look for ways to get as much as you can from the fruits that are available to you. This could be accomplished by creating ways to enjoy all parts of the fruit, including the seeds, skin and even roots. Some accomplish this through juicing raw fruits directly. Regardless of the method, this “whole fruit” approach will obviously provide more of these Anti-Oxidants than just consuming one part of the fruit. Another characteristic of Vilcabamban centenarians is their daily schedules, including participation in physical labor. Most days throughout the Valley begin early in the morning. Breakfast is rarely skipped and usually consists of some form of fruit and vegetable. Glenn Thomas, MD An Associate Clinical Professor at Loma Linda University in California, Dr. Glenn Thomas was struck unexpectedly with Lyme disease early in his medical career. Following a hike to San Gorgonio peak in the San Bernardino Mountains in 1993, he began experiencing symptoms that included: pain and inflammation in nearly all major joints, severe fatigue, difficulty sleeping, severe memory impairment, stroke like symptoms and major speech problems. The Vilcabambans have been very generous in allowing Westerners to have access to their mineral-rich waters, Anti-Oxidant infused fruits and to simply learn from them. Vilcabamba’s future is in the hands of the children who now live there. To maintain their rich heritage, the children need quality education. Then, they won’t have to leave the village in their late teenage years to obtain that education in one of the large cities from which most never return. Craig Keeland believed it was important to give back to these generous people and decided to create a foundation to serve the children of the area. Craig was extremely careful to find out exactly what the children needed. Toward this purpose, Craig asked his long-time friend, Jaime Mendoza, who Craig calls “the Ambassador of Vilcabamba,” to become the director of The Andes Children’s Foundation. Jaime was born in Ecuador but left there at age six with his family to live in San Francisco. There, his father served as Ecuador’s General Consul for 14 years. Growing up, Jaime considered himself an American. He served in the U.S. Army and attended college in the states. On a trip to Ecuador, Jaime visited Vilcabamba and fell in love with the scenic beauty, the climate and the people. As Jaime says, “When you love it this much, you have to marry it.” From that moment, he has made Vilcabamba his home. Jaime founded Vilcabamba’s tourist industry when he established the Valley’s first hotel. It’s an industry that has allowed the area to prosper. Today, nearly 70% of Vilcabamba’s inhabitants are employed by the industry that Jaime founded. He has hosted scientists from all over the world who have traveled to Vilcabamba to study the longevity of its people. Their documentation of the centenarians of Vilcabamba has brought tremendous notoriety to the Valley. Jaime’s wife Durga and two children, Eva and Adrian are deeply involved in the life of Vilcabamba and have recently taken over the reigns at Co-Directors in Ecuador. Durga established a foundation dedicated to preserving the ecology of the region and the surrounding Podocarpus National Reserve. She has advocated for better structural buildings that bring life and color to the village. Jaime and his family have done much to help the Vilcabambans live more comfortably. The Andes Children’s Foundation Helping the Children of Vilcabamba allows us to give back to these people who provide us with so much. From a modern day viewpoint, there are many needs in the simple agrarian culture. Virtually any of the daily conveniences we take for granted in our modern world would be considered luxuries to the average Vilcabamban. The Andes Children’s Foundation was established in the United States as a registered 501(c)(3) charity to provide financial and physical support for the educational needs of the children of Vilcabamba and throughout the Loja region. The Foundation’s goal is to not only give back to a culture and a people who have given us so much, but to do it in a way that will not be intrusive or adversely affect the area’s resources. By helping educate the children of the region, we provide the residents there with invaluable possibilities for future growth and blessings for generations to come. that is lacking in the ability to provide the technology and full educational opportunities simply because of the limited financial resources of the state-run school system. Teachers in this system frequently go on strike, just to earn an additional $10 a month, thus interrupting the flow of the curriculum and hindering the children’s progress. The initial work of the foundation had its beginnings when Craig Keeland traveled to Vilcabamba with a very special donation: The local school’s very first computer system. Future cash donations will be used to buy more computer equipment and provide much needed school supplies. For example, there is a shortage of school books. Much time is wasted as teachers are forced to read from a single copy of a book while the children copy down everything the teacher reads so each child will have something to study.

AMBASSADORS OF HOPE One hundred percent (100%) of all contributions to the foundation are sent directly to Vilcabamba. All administrative costs are paid for by outside benefactors. Though cash donations are tremendously helpful, the foundation goes beyond in building a solid educational experience for the children of Vilcabamba. The foundation provides opportunities for individuals to give direct in-kind donations of educational materials including: computer equipment, books, school supplies and much more. One such donation was the result of a recent trip to Vilcabamba by Craig and Dr. Mark Pedersen. As part of his Scouting Eagle Award project, Dr. Pedersen’s son Matt located computers and a video projector to donate to the children’s school. But, he was not sure how to get them there. When Craig heard of Matt’s project, he volunteered to cover the costs of packaging and shipping the donations himself. None of the foundation’s funds were used for any administrative expense. The computers and video projector were delivered to Jaime Mendoza in Vilcabamba, who then presented them to the school’s principal. The foundation also provides individuals a unique way to serve the children of Vilcabamba through one to three week educational missions.

Participants can travel to Vilcabamba at their own expense and teach the children directly. During these mission experiences, volunteers are given the opportunity to share with the children their own specialties such as using the computer, training on various software packages and teaching subjects like science, math and more. Through this program called “Mission Vilcabamba”, the missionary does not even need to possess any special skill or talent in order to instruct the children as they are always needed to teach English, music or even organize athletic events. The goal is to provide anyone who would like to participate with an opportunity to serve. The foundation has set its sight on providing three missionary opportunities throughout the year.
