WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION FOR THE RESEARCH? My first piece for the Mackinac Center was on political economic development, so it’s an issue I’ve been following for a while. In November, however, I was checking the status of the previous governor’s green jobs plan when I noticed that a lot of them were involved with electric cars in general and the Volt in particular. I began compiling all of the deals involving the project and found the sum noteworthy.

WHAT’S THE MOST SURPRISING THING YOU LEARNED? I wasn’t surprised by this, but I was in awe of just how much the federal government was pumping into the project. The state government bets on winners and losers in the

it’s part I love providing.

I just finished a policy brief reviewing the transition costs when closing a government pension fund. The state pension fund is expensive and underfunded, but legislators are afraid to close the fund for fear of large and material transition costs.

WERE YOU SURPRISED BY THE RESPONSE TO THE STUDY?

In the brief, I found that these costs were an accounting phenomenon and entirely discretionary. I also

Projects aro the institu ECONOMIC FREEDOM ROADSHOW

The Economic Freedom “Road Show” is a dynamic, 45-minute presentation exploring economic freedom and its five pillars. John Hardin, with the Charles Koch Foundation, dives deeply into the concept, offering the latest research available, and exploring strong correlations between a society’s level of economic freedom and its prosperity.

QUESTIONS INCLUDE:

What is economic freedom and how can we measure it?

Why has America fallen from 3rd to 10th in economic freedom

when compared with other nations across the globe?

How does this decline impact you and your future?

The presentation engages the audience in a discussion about how economic freedom affects diverse issues including civil rights, life expectancy, income levels, and environmental quality; how excessive government spending, unnecessary regulations and cronyism in the U.S. have shaped our economic freedom; and what such trends suggest about our future levels of prosperity.
