Prior to the first visit for The Combined Approach, the patient and parents are referred to the Department usually by the general practitioner, and seen by a derma tologist for assessment and diagnosis. A referral is then made to the Psychodermatology Service and a series of appointments is arranged.
Visit One Introduction Therapist introduced. Note who attends with child. Arrange distracting activity for child. Broad characteris tics of programme described. Usual experience of treat ment to date summarised — in contrast, The Combined Approach characterised by collaboration between family and therapist. Emphasis to be on 'managing eczema' rather than 'being managed'; education, by discussion and reading.
