INFECTION CONTROL AND CLEANING Cleaning is an essential MUST in any organisation with a duty of care to ensure that all persons present or visiting are within a safe and clean environment, with focus being on:

• • • •

reducing the risk of contamination

removing or preventing waste food, grease, dirt and rubbish attracting pests

helping prolong the life of surfaces/floor covers and ensure slips and falls are prevented

giving a pleasant and safe working environment

Cleaners play a vitally important part within any team Infection Control & Germs - Germs are spread by hands Germs are transmitted by hand, from person to person and to object. The frequency of hand contact on areas can create ‘germ hotspots’ and can increase infection rates and the spreading of bacteria. Adequate and effective cleaning for infection control is imperative.

ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITY ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITY REFERS TO THE PROCESS OF KILLING OR INHIBITING THE DISEASE CAUSING MICROBES n ANTIMICROBIAL MAY BE ANTI-BACTERIAL, ANTI-FUNGAL OR ANTIVIRAL. The following details efficacy accreditations relating to antimicrobial activities and depends upon the recommended contact time the product has been left on the surface for. This information is for guidance only as % kill rate is variable from product to product - we would always suggest you read the relevant efficacy data for each product before use.

BS EN1040

Quantitative suspension test to evaluate basic bactericidal activity of chemical disinfectants and antiseptics. Products that can be tested. Active substances (antibacterial biocides) and formulations planned to be used in food, industrial, domestic, institutional, medical and veterinary areas.

BS EN1275

Chemical disinfectants and antiseptics. Quantitative suspension test for the evaluation of basic fungicidal or basic yeasticidal activity of chemical disinfectants and antiseptics.

BS EN1276

This is probably the most common of the standards which need to be met. broadly regulates the bactericidal efficacy of cleaning fluids and sprays, in particular this deals with E-Coli and is vital as a safeguard to guarantee the performance of many cleaning resources used in kitchen and food preparation areas. Chemical cleaning solutions are tested to make sure that they can destroy the requisite level of 99.999% of bacteria in 5 minutes.

BS EN1500

Chemical disinfectants. Mostly regulates hand sanitisers and hygienic hand rubs. This standard was initially introduced in 1997 but has been updated as of 2013.

BS EN1650

Quantitative suspension test for the evaluation of fungicidal or yeasticidal activity of chemical disinfectants and antiseptics used in food, industrial, domestic and institutional areas.

BS EN12054

Chemical disinfectants. Quantitative suspension test for the evaluation of bactericidal activity of products for hygienic and surgical handrub and handwash used in human medicine.

BS EN12791

The test assesses whether a product for surgical hand disinfection reduces the release of the flora of clean hands. This test is used both for products used in surgical hand disinfection by friction, as for hygienic handwashing.

BS EN13624

Chemical disinfectants and antiseptics. Quantitative suspension test for the evaluation of fungicidal or yeasticidal activity in the medical area.

BS EN13727

Mandatory phase 2 step 1 suspension test for disinfectants intended for use in the medical area. It applies to products that are used in the medical area in the fields of hygienic handrub, hygienic handwash, surgical handrub, surgical handwash, instrument disinfection by immersion, and surface disinfection by wiping, spraying, flooding or other means.

3

All biocidal products also require a BPR Regulation EU 528/2012 authorisation before they can be placed on the market, and the active substances contained in that biocidal product must be previously approved. The biocidal products regulation (BPR, Regulation (EU) 528/2012) concerns the placing on the market and use of biocidal products, which are used to protect humans, animals, materials or articles against harmful organisms like pests or bacteria, by the action of the active substances contained in the biocidal product.

Where r e appropri levant, the ate E certifica N number tion wil l be shown a l o n g s ide product s listed within this doc ument

BS EN13697

Quantitative non-porous surface test for the evaluation of bactericidal and/or fungicidal activity of chemical disinfectants used in food, industrial, domestic and institutional area.

BS EN13704

Quantitative suspension test for the evaluation of sporicidal activity of chemical disinfectants used in food, industrial, domestic and institutional areas.

BS EN13727

Quantitative suspension test desinged to evaluate bactericidal activity.

BS EN14347

Chemical disinfectants and antiseptics. Quantitative suspension test for the evaluation of mycobactericidal activity of chemical disinfectants in the medical area including instrument disinfectants.

BS EN14348

Chemical disinfectants and antiseptics. Quantitative suspension test for the evaluation of mycobactericidal activity of chemical disinfectants in the medical area including instrument disinfectants.

BS EN14349

Quantitative surface test for the evaluation of bactericidal activity of chemical disinfectants and antiseptics used in the veterinary area on non-porous surfaces without mechanical action.

BS EN14476

Quantitative suspension test for the evaluation of virucidal activity of chemical disinfectants and antiseptics used in the veterinary area.

BS EN14561

Specifies a carrier test for establishing whether a chemical disinfectant for use on instruments (surgical instruments, anaesthesia material, endoscopes etc.) has a bactericidal activity in the fields described in the scope.

BS EN14562

Specifies a carrier test for establishing whether a chemical disinfectant for use on instruments (surgical instruments, anaesthesia material, endoscopes etc.) has a fungicidal or yeasticidal activity in the fields described in the scope.

BS EN14563

Chemical disinfectants and antiseptics. Quantitative carrier test for the evaluation of mycobactericidal or tuberculocidal activity of chemical disinfectants used for instruments in the medical area.

BS EN16615

It is a quantitative test method for the evaluation of bactericidal and yeasticidal activity of disinfectant wipes intended for use in the medical area. The wipe is tested on a non-porous surface with mechanical action.

COLOUR CODING THE IMPORTANCE OF COLOUR CODING FOR INFECTION CONTROL - BEST PRACTICE Cleaning is an important part of any environment and getting rid of harmful bacteria is paramount for the prevention of infections. Bacteria can be spread from room to room and from cleaning equipment to cleaning equipment, for example if a mop used to clean the washroom is also used when cleaning the kitchen, germs can quite easily breed. The best way to mitigate germs spreading is to ensure that all cleaning operations adopt effective infection control procedures, part of which includes all cleaning operatives following a colour coding system in their day to day work. BICS is the largest independent, professional and educational body within the cleaning industry. They have developed their own recognised colour coding system. Hospitals and Healthcare sectors tend to operate using a different one. In reality, it doesn’t matter as long as an organisation adopts one that is followed by all cleaning staff.

Colour-Coded Wiping - Best Practice Reduce the risk of cross-contamination by implementing a consistent and documented colour-coded wiping regime. Work areas and surfaces must be segmented by colour to be HACCP compliant - a critical part of FSA inspections. Colour-coded wipes easily identify use in different departments and surface areas. Plus this provides visual confirmation of effective cross-contamination control for FSA inspection.

COLOUR CODING

The difference between anti-microbial & antibacterial An anti-microbial inhibits the growth of harmful micro-organisms such as bacteria, fungi and moulds. An antibacterial specifically prevents the growth of bacterial. Hillbrush has developed a range of colour coded anti-microbial hygienic tools. Each component contains Biomaster Antimicrobial Technology which uses a silver-ion base to inhibit the growth of a wide range of microbes such as MRSA, E.coli, Listeria and Campylobacter. All products are FDA/EU food contact approved.

Make sure your ‘Scores on The Doors’ do not let you down The Scores on the Doors scheme operates across the UK and helps customers choose where they eat by providing information on hygiene standards for restaurants, cafes, food shops, takeaways and supermarkets. JET AIR DRYERS VS HAND TOWELS DRYING WITH PAPER TOWELS REDUCES BACTERIA ON FINGERS BY UP TO 77% Using a jet air dryer dispersed 1,300 times more viruses than drying with paper towels

Drying hands with paper towels reduces bacteria on fingers by upto 77%

The inner surfaces of jet air dryers harbour up to 48 times more bacteria than a toilet seat

The rubbing process of paper towels physically removes bacteria along with moisture

Coliform bacteria were found on 52% of jet air dryers tested, compared to 0% of paper towel dispensers

90% of people showed a behavioural preference for paper towels over jet hand dryers in the washroom

Jet air dryers can increase the germ count on fingertips by up to 42% Jet air dryers blow water droplets that could contain bacteria and viruses into the air, travelling as far as 2 metres and lingering in the air for up to 15 minutes

Given the strong preference for using paper towels, hand hygiene adherence would possible decrease is paper towels are not available in the washroom, according to a review article in the Mayo Clinic Proeceedings

Source: Kimberly Clark

Paper towels are the recommended hand drying method of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Guidelines on Hand Hygiene in Health Care

SINGLE USE HAND TOWELS ARE MORE EFFEC TIVE FOR INFECTION CONTROL THAN JET AIR DRYERS. We deal with all major manufacturers and can help choose the right hand towel solution for you, call us on 023 9243 4505 18
