Are you up for the fight? How to build your immune system and face the winter with confidence! In addition to your flu vaccine, you can assist your body in the fight against flu and various other virus infections by follow ing these easy steps to build your immune system. Eat healthily! The advantage of following a healthy eating plan cannot be overemphasized. Fresh fruits and vegetables on a daily basis are a good way to start. You also need Omega 3 and 6 in your diet, commonly found in fish and other foods such as avocados. Yoghurt should form part of your daily intake of dairy as it contains probiotics which is good for your digestive system. Throw in a few nuts, whole-grain foods and cereals. The same goes for green and rooibos teas, which are rich in anti-oxidants and are also beneficial to your immune system.
sive, but a good guideline is to exercise at least three times a week for approximately 45 minutes. Walking, jogging, swimming and cycling are suited for most individuals and will also enhance bone density in women.
Dermalex Repair, start your journey to relief! Dermalex, a clinically proven skin care range, is now available in Leading Pharmacies across South Africa. This ground-breaking range of products has been developed by leading European dermatologists to aid in the relief of rosacea, psoriasis and eczema – chronic skin conditions which have a huge physical and emotional impact on sufferers. These products are cortisone, paraben and fragrance free and provide a safe and soothing solution that allows suffers to effectively manage these chronic conditions without having to worry about harmful side effects. Dermalex Repair’s unique Barrier Repair Accelerating Complex works in two ways to restore and protect damaged skin. Firstly Dermalex Repair activates the skin’s own repair mechanism through a patented mineral complex that restores the natural
structure of the skin which helps to prevent future flare-ups. Secondly Dermalex Repair forms a moisturising micro-shield on the skin that calms and soothes irritation whilst also protecting the skin from outside insults. “Dermalex is proven to be an effective stand-alone treatment and can also be used in combination with other products. The range provides an alternative and effective new solution for optimum relief of the symptoms of rosacea, psoriasis and eczema,” says Annelies Smits, international brand manager for Dermalex. This product targets the cause of the condition by restoring the skin, while soothing, calming and moisturising affected areas. Vitamin C - the super hero of nutrients Vitamin C steals the show when one considers the immune boosting benefits of nutrients. How does it work? Since our immune system is responsible for protecting our bodies against invading viruses and bacteria, it comes as no surprise that Vitamin C’s actions are directly focused on immune cells. According to test results published in Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology, there is up to 100 times more Vitamin C in our white blood cells than in the plasma (the fluid component) of our blood. Vitamin C has also been shown to increase the number and activity of our immune cells, as well as protecting our immune cells against premature degeneration. At the onset of an infection, an increase in the usage of Vitamin C by our immune cells results in a decrease in Vitamin C levels. During this time, it seems that the body is able to retain dietary Vitamin C more effectively, as it is required to help fight the infection. Can Vitamin C support the prevention and management of colds and flu?
Reduce the risk: Taking 1000 mg Vitamin C per day can reduce the risk for colds and flu. Reduce severity of symptoms : A review published in the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials reveals that a daily dose of 1000 mg of Vitamin C can reduce the severity of the symptoms of a cold. Reduce the duration: This same report showes that Vitamin C supplementation showed a modest but consistent reduction in duration of cold symptoms. Contrary to the popular belief that oranges have the highest levels of Vitamin C, guavas, sweet red peppers and chillies contain between 3-6 times more Vitamin C than oranges. With many vegetables listed as concentrated Vitamin C sources, it is important to consider the fact that heat exposure during cooking destroys up to 50% of the Vitamin C. It is therefore important to find ways of ingesting vegetables such as red peppers in their raw state to get the desired immune boosting benefit.
Did you know? Signs of Vitamin C deficiency include: bleeding gums, poor healing of wounds and bruises, muscular atrophy, skin lesions, depression and rheumatic pain in legs. To optimise your intake of Vitamin C this winter, take Vital Maxi C – it provides a dose of 1000 mg Vitamin C, enriched with bioflavonoids, L-glutathion and Alpha Lipoic Acid, to support the absorption, retention and metabolism of Vitamin C in the body]

Can antibiotics decrease the effectiveness of birth control pills? Q
The effects of antibiotics on birth control pills may be overstated — except in the case of one antibiotic, rifampin (Rimactane). Studies clearly show that rifampin decreases the effectiveness of birth control pills in preventing ovulation. However, rifampin isn’t used widely today.
I feel tired all the time and need to know what I can use to boost my energy, as I simply cannot keep up with the demands of my life as a 39 year old male, with a career and family. Please help. Q
Some lifestyle or health factors are well known to cause fatigue. Insufficient sleep, an unbalanced diet, stress and some medical conditions may be key contributors to fatigue. However, if you follow a healthy diet, sleep enough and do not suffer with a medical condition that results in fatigue, I would suggest that you have your blood pressure tested - it would be good to have it tested while you feel tired. If your blood pressure is low, this may explain your persistent fatigue. In the case of low blood pressure, Vital Men would be the correct multivitamin for you to take, since it contains all the energy support nutrients you need, as well as a high dose of ginseng that can help normalise your blood pressure. If your blood pressure is normal, I would advise that you take Vital Gold as a multivitamin, as this would support your energy levels, especially if you are active with an exercise programme.
Some other tips that you can follow:
Drink more fluids: Drink at least 6-8 glasses of water per day – one of the first symptoms of dehydration is fatigue and poor concentration. Drink 2-3 cups of green tea – green tea is packed with energizing antioxidants that support energy and vitality Sleep it off: Make sure to get enough rest – at least 6 hours of sleep per night is needed, but 7-8 hours is ideal Get fighting fit: Regular exercise is vital to support your body and mind’s resilience to cope during times of stress and fatigue. An unfit person is less able to cope with the physical and mental demands of a pressured lifestyle. Spoil him this Father’s Day
We all know how important a mother is! But a noted sociologist, Dr. David Popenoe, one of the pioneers of the relatively young field of research into fatherhood says that fathers bring positive benefits to their children that no other person is as likely to bring! They bring emotional security and balance into a home. We agree! So spoil your dad this Father’s Day by showing him how much you appreciate his role in your life!
