It’s been non-stop here at Très Chic since our last issue. We are still reeling from our whirlwind trip to London to shoot Ruth Lorenzo who blew us away with her energy, enthusiasm and sense of style. Supermodels eat your hearts out – this girl knows how to work a camera, as you will see on pages 28-35. Don’t miss her when she performs in Marbella at Pinillo Beach as part of the huge Queen Tribute concert on August 5. We were also lucky enough to hook up with Joaquín Cortés for a quick chat before his Marbella performance on July 16. Did he or didn’t he break Naomi Campbell’s heart? Flick to page 56 to find out. We are really feeling the 70s theme that is flowing through fashion channels this summer. We can’t get enough of the retro vibe that reaches from our wardrobe to the kitchen, which is why, as well as our 70s-influenced trends page, you will find classic recipes from the Abba era gracing our food section. It was a busy month for parties too. We were there dressed in white at the Nikki Beach party. Didn’t spot us? Well, we saw you and we picked our favourite outfits from the night – check out page 55 to see if you made it to our top three best dressed list. The Suite del Mar opening party was another amazing event – read all about it on page 50. If you noticed the hot guy playing the drums – he was hard to miss – his name is Stefano Cestra and you can get the low down on all his drumming exploits on page 52. Swoon!! And, of course, there was no way we were going to miss out on the infamous white and gold party at Buddha Beach – we love a bit of celeb spotting and there are always a few hanging out at Buddha. Turn to page 53 to find out who was at this year’s Buddha bash. As always, fashion features heavily in this issue, which has not one but two amazing fashion shoots and a beauty shoot by our star photographer Jayden Fa and his creative team. What would we do without you Jayden? We certainly wouldn’t be able to stay up to date with all the latest trends without his keen eye and savvy style radar. We hope you love his latest work as much as we do. See you at the beach (or maybe the bar)!

You have seriously had your head in the sand if you live in Marbella and you haven’t heard about La Sala. Where have you been? In our world it seems impossible to get through a weekend without hearing the name mentioned over and over again, as the one and only place for the city’s beautiful people to hang out for drinks and dinner. Packed every week night and almost impossible to get into at the weekend, La Sala deserves its hard-earned notoriety. The décor is slick. The service is even slicker and the menu is top notch. This heady combination, as well as its central location, make it the place to be seen. Nowhere else in town is as busy or as buzzing as La Sala. We’ll see you there – if we can get a table.

Want to add a little more sass to your swagger this summer? Then look no further than the fringe trend, brought to us by Roberto Cavalli, Gucci and All Saints. The choice of fringing right now is vast and allows us to feel playful once again. There’s really nothing cooler than the swish of fringing and, with some stack bangles and wedges, you will be catapulted to high-fashion status. Creating a look of carefree confidence, fringing allows you to stand out amongst your peers and add some boho spirit in the height of summer. Cool and carefree, now that is a good recipe!

Denim Candy

There is no fashion trend quite as enduring as the trusty denim jean, and this season we are treated to a refreshing spin on the old faithful. Gone are the days of straight legged, blue, hipster or bell bottom, in 2011 we can choose from a delectable array of colours and customised looks. With new styles such as the super-slouch and the sportster to tempt us, we are treated to a choice of pop colours and prints that would excite even the safest denim wearer. Beautiful florals from Topshop, candy colours from American Apparel, and with Vivienne Westwood designing for Lee, it’s time to revamp that old collection and step boldly into summer in colour.

70s fever has arrived and, with it brings a flood of psychedelic prints and gorgeous floral temptations. Figure hugging or soft and floaty, 70s style makes us want to sashay through summer with chilled-out style! Team high-waisted flares, with a bright shirt to really work this look, keep your top half tailored and those wedges at the ready. Key items can be added to a straight shift dress, or a long-billowing maxi for a simpler approach, add some extra large shades, long beads or a headscarf, and don’t go anywhere without that flower in your hair!

The event, which celebrates rising stars in fashion design, is now in its 20th year and is judged by designers such as Amanda Wakeley and Lucy Yeomans, editor of Harper’s Bazaar.

Iconic British fashion designer – Diane Von Furstenberg is confirmed as the latest designer to collaborate with Gap Childrenswear. Her line for Gap will hit the shops in March next year. The collection will range from baby girls’ clothing to items for teenagers up to the age of 14. FLOAT your BOAT If you have ever wondered how celebrities achieve that easy, chic style even when they are just popping out for a cup of coffee, Daisy boutique has all the answers – and you won’t even need a stylist! When we walk into Daisy Boutique, the owner, Anne-Mette Elizalde is busy styling up her latest customer. A loose, cotton top, a leopard print scarf and some chandelier earrings later, and said client is beaming from ear to ear as she leaves with bags packed full of stylish new looks. Anne-Mette is super hands on and spends much of her time researching new brands and bringing the latest fashions to Marbella from all over the world. Her latest coup is signing up the Tolani label, which is one of the hottest brands in California right now. Anne-Mette shows us amazing photos of Sienna Miller wearing the same scarf that her client just walked out with around her neck. Of course, Sienna always like to gives things a twist, so the next pic shows her wearing the same scarf as a sarong as she walks along a sunny, Californian beach. “I had to work really hard to get this brand,” says Anne-Mette as she shows us more of his scarves and pure silk tunics, which are all made in India. “Tolani is so popular with celebrities that the designer Raj really doesn’t even need to export his collection; it gets snapped up as soon as it hits the shelves in the US.” Luckily for Marbella, Ana managed to charm Raj and convince him that the Costa del Sol is the perfect market for his 26 TRÈS CHIC

designs, which are now flying out of Daisy Boutique as fast as they arrive. The Infinity scarf, which is one of our favourites, has already sold out, but Anne-Mette promises there will more arriving before the end of the summer. Phew! Tolani is just one of the casual but chic labels that epitomise the Daisy style. The store is a one-stop shop for comfy style that has A-list appeal. Angelina Jolie and Sarah Jessica Parker just can’t get enough of the Rachel Pally brand that is one of Anne-Mette’s best sellers. “Angelina Jolie says she loves the label because it is so easy to wear, it never wrinkles and you can step off a plane looking fabulous without economising on comfort,” explains Anne-Mette as she pulls out a selection of Rachel Pally’s dresses, shorts and tops. All her designs are made from 92 percent modal and eight percent spandex, so they look like cotton jersey but feel like silk and hang beautifully. Also on the comfy side is Jen’s Pirate Booty, another made-forsummer collection that features dresses and tops made predominantly from cheesecloth and crochet. Supermodel Alessandra Ambrosia is a big fan of the label, which is so light that it lets your skin breathe in the hotter months of the year. Always on the lookout for the perfect t-shirt, we couldn’t help but spy the edgy collection of tees from Lauren Moshi. Each one is created from one of her original sketches that are then printed onto t-shirt fabric. Pair one of these with a well-cut pair of jeans, and your style kudos will go off the radar. No wonder celebs such as Charlize Theron, Nikki Hilton and Christina Aguilera are regularly being snapped wearing Lauren’s looks. Of course, no outfit is complete without the perfect accessories, and Daisy boutique has an eclectic range of bags, shoes and jewellery to suit every look. Check out Mimi Bijoux, which is new at Daisy and already selling like hotcakes. Made from real gold and semi-precious stones the delicate, bespoke designs incorporate vintage, ethnic and multi-cultural influences such as the evil eye bracelets that come in yellow, rose and white gold. The big excitement of the day was to discover that Daisy stocks ultra-trendy Jeffrey Campbell shoes from the US. We couldn’t try them on fast enough. It is the hot shoe brand that all the top bloggers are going gaga over, and we totally get it. The chunky, fur sandals with wooden heels are bang on trend, combining the 70s wedges look with a clog-esque feel, the ideal accompaniment for all our most retro looks (especially flares) this summer. Plus, at 120euros they are amazing value for money. We’ll be back to pick up a pair of the leopard print style that are arriving in August – see you there! The Très Chic team swap their flip flops for welly boots and head to London to meet X Factor star Ruth Lorenzo who is coming back to perform in Marbella this summer By Daisy Omissi

After an almost missed flight, a lost camera cable and a fight with a black cab driver, the Très Chic team has made it to London for an exclusive photo shoot and interview with X Factor star Ruth Lorenzo. The 28-yearold Spanish singer, who brought the house down with her knock out performance supporting Bjorn Again in the bullring last year, is coming back to Marbella this summer as the warm up act for the huge Queen Tribute concert, which will take place on August 5 at Playa del Pinillo. Although summer has finally arrived in Marbella, the sun in London is playing hide and seek – it hides, we seek – and the sun is most definitely on a winning streak. Fortu-

is being launched in Spain on June 27. With a voice this big, it is no wonder she almost stole the show from Bjorn Again last year and no surprise that she went so far on X Factor in 2008. Despite the chilly, underground venue, Ruth is on top form and has her entourage with her for moral support – her nine-year-old niece and her older sister, who just flew in from San Francisco on route to see the rest of the Lorenzo clan in Murcia, Spain where Ruth was born. When she was 10 years old, Ruth and her family moved to the States where she stayed until she was 16 and they returned to Spain. One of six kids, two girls and four boys, Ruth still has an American twang to her accent, which she admits is, “A bit all over the place.” Now based in London, Ruth is still riding the wave of her success on X Factor three years ago and travelling around Europe performing concerts. This summer alone she is scheduled to sing in Russia, Paris, Nice, Ireland, and of course, Marbella. “I am so excited to be coming back to Marbella,” she tells us while she is getting ready for the shoot. “It is so cool that they asked me back. I had tears in my eyes at the end of the show last year. Performing in a bullring is something special for anyone who is Spanish and the crowd was just amazing.” This year Ruth is planning to go back to her roots as a trained opera singer and open the show with an operatic aria before she launches into a set

“It is harder and more painful to follow your heart and do what you believe in, in the long term I think I will have more credibility and longevity as an artist” nately, our venue for the shoot is indoors at the ultra-grungy and urban Cable nightclub in London Bridge, and we take shelter from the rain under the arches of the railway. The soundtrack to our day is the rumble of trains as they rattle towards the station above us shaking the venue and making it feel like the ceiling might fall on our heads at any moment. The only thing louder than the noise of the train is Ruth’s amazing voice as she sings us a snippet from her latest track Burn, which 28 TRÈS CHIC

of rock classics. When we meet her in London she has just returned from Madrid where she performed at the Must online magazine awards. And she will shortly be returning to Spain for a promotional tour prior to the launch of her single. “My Spanish audience is growing all the time,” she reveals, although her biggest fans are still English and Irish, who have been following her since X Factor. In fact, it was some of her original English fans who encouraged her to enter X Factor in the first place. “I was working at a golf resort in Spain singing at the weekends,” Ruth explains. “There was an English family who used to come every year to the resort and they told me about X Factor. They kept saying I should enter and then for my birthday they gave me an entry form. It’s thanks to them that I am where I am today.”

TRÈS CHIC Exclusive So what is it about Ruth that has kept her star illuminated while so many other ex-X Factor stars have disappeared from the limelight? It is obvious from watching her work on our shoot that she is hard working, professional and enthusiastic about everything she does. From the minute she arrives on set she is focused, full of ideas and totally game for whatever we suggest, despite the slightly damp and dark conditions. She loves all the clothes we have brought along for her and doesn’t complain in the slightest about the numerous costume changes and hours of hair and makeup. It definitely helps that Ruth is passionate about what she does and has a typically fiery Spanish personality that means no-one in the industry is going to push her around. She even walked away from her EMI contract because they were pushing her in a direction that she felt was wrong for her. “I am not a Euro pop kind of girl, it is just not me” she says. “If you go down that route, you will have one hit and then disappear forever. I want to do music I love and I don’t want to sell out. Although it is harder and more painful to follow your heart and do what you believe in, in the long term I think I will have more credibility and longevity as an artist.” Where Ruth has had an advantage over other ex-X Factor contestants is her attitude towards the fame game. She has an instinctive understanding about who she is and how she wants to be portrayed. She isn’t interested in appearing in magazines every day just for the sake of it and you will never see images of her falling out of nightclubs drunk or posing in her underwear for a men’s mag. She is way too savvy to be sucked into that darker side of celebrity living. “Fame that comes quickly, leaves quickly,” says Ruth, who has been singing all her life and knows that it is hard work not paparazzi pictures that will get her to the top. “The world of celebrity can confuse you. Some artists get in a panic if they aren’t in a certain magazine, when really they should only panic if they can’t sing anymore. It is easy to lose sight of what’s important.” Ruth is way too busy penning sings for her new album as well as writing for other artists, such as her friend Danni Minogue, to be out partying the night away. “Danni and I have become great friends since X Factor,” says Ruth who was mentored by the Aussie star during her stint on the show. “She is mostly in Australia since she had her baby but we email all the time and she looks over all my new material; she is always interested in what I am up to. Her upcoming album is going to be amazing – I think it is going to surprise a lot of people.” She has had less contact with Simon Cowell since the show, but admits she’d love it if he came to see her perform in Marbella where he has house. “Simon had nothing but kind words to say about me during the show, he is such a lovely guy,” she says with a coy smile when we ask if he didn’t have a bit of a crush on her during X Factor. “Simon is a business man and once you understand that business is business it is much easier to get along with him. You can’t take anything he says or does personally. He is preparing contestants on the X Factor for this industry, which is not a nice business to be in; it is nasty, rude and can be awful. “Simon gave me the confidence to stand up for who I am. I was a typical Spanish woman with big hips and big boobs, TRÈS CHIC 31

TRÈS CHIC Exclusive but he made me feel good when he said I looked beautiful.” Ruth still has the curvaceous boobs and hips, but she has drastically slimmed down in the three years since she found fame. Now she picks at a lentil salad during our shoot avoiding the flapjacks that the rest of the crew are tucking into. She is incredibly aware of her body and movements while we are taking her pictures, moving and improvising to give each shot a unique angle; she is a photographer’s dream! “I used to be so nervous about doing shoots. Now I appreciate how hard models have to work and how they need to understand where they are putting their bodies.” It is hard to imagine Ruth being nervous as she totally takes control of our six-hour photo session in the underground club. From the moment she walks in she takes over the situation without any diva behaviour but with charm and a sense of fun. “I am a bit of a control freak,” she laughs as she grabs the eyeliner from our make-up artist and applies it herself. “My make-up artist totally hates me. I always have to do my eyeliner myself. I think I have OCD,” she jokes. “I am a bit like Monica from Friends. Well, a cross between Monica and Phoebe. Phoebe represents my creative side.” Ruth had stipulated that she wanted the shoot to be “Rock N Roll” and we were happy to deliver, mixing up outfits from edgy brands such as A&G Couture with Stephen Webster jewellery. When it came to shoes Ruth gave us the pick of her immense collection of Kurt Geigers, Jimmy Choos and Manolo Blahniks – and we were like kids in a candy shop! She must currently have at least 70 pairs crammed into her wardrobe and that’s not taking into account the numerous pairs she gives away on a regular basis. “I love shoes and bags,” she confesses, “But if I had to choose I’d take shoes every time. Shoes, shoes, shoes! I am much more into bags and shoes than clothes,” she adds. “I love buying second hand clothes from markets. My signature look is a pair of amazing, black leggings, Manolos, a cool, second-hand leather jacket from Camden Market, a nice vintage clutch from Brick Lane and chunky, silver jewellery from The Great Frog or Crazy Pig on Carnaby Street.” Completing Ruth’s rock n roll look is a tattoo that snakes up her arm reading: The Raspberry Pattern. The significance? “I like randomness, small versions of patterns in the universe – raspberries are one of them, they are just random but beautiful.” Ruth may be addicted to the randomness that life brings, but it wasn’t anything random that got her to where she is today, it was sheer hard work, commitment and passion, and for that we salute her. See Ruth live at Pinillo Beach on Aug 5. Visit: for more information. With special thanks to Cable London. 34 TRÈS CHIC

White Out

The Nikki Beach white party is possibly one of the most famous parties in the world. Jet-setters from around the globe fly into Marbella for this iconic night. The moment those fireworks (and champagne corks) go off you know that summer has officially started. This year a sea of partygoers dressed in white danced the night away to the hottest sounds of the summer provided by sexy Swiss model and DJ Tanja La Croix, and recently retired motorbike ace, Fonsi B20, along with resident Nikki Beach DJ Mario Zarate. The Nikki Beach go gos (direct from Miami) were on top form strutting their stuff on the podiums and giving the crowd an amazing show. We loved the sax player and electronic violin players who really upped the tempo of the night. We have never seen Nikki Beach so packed or as many people having so much fun. And the best news? This was just the first of many spectacular nights that Nikki Beach has lined up for 2011 – it is going to be a white hot summer!

Boogie Wonderland There wasn’t a person left sitting down at the Suite del Mar party – the whole crowd was on their feet dancing the night away under the stars The morning after the Suite del Mar opening party, the Très Chic girls were busy comparing blisters. High heels and six hours of non-stop dancing are never a good combination, but the music was so amazing at the party that we couldn’t sit down. Resident DJs Zoe Marmentini and Edu Reyes always get it just right, playing the perfect combination of tunes to get the whole crowd burning up the dance floor. Drummer Stefano Cestra also upped the ante with his energetic drumming over the top of some the biggest hits of the year. Everywhere we looked VIPs, who we’d never imagine leaving their private booths, were up strutting their stuff and loving it. The free-flowing champagne probably helped everyone get into the mood but the biggest crowd pleasers of the night were the Pop Dolls who belted out the best sing-along tunes of the last 30 years. In matching gold wigs and spray on lycra catsuits they rocked the stage with their live vocals and wicked moves. The only time the crowd stopped to draw breath was to watch the amazing Cirque du Soleilesque antics of the amazing Aerial Illusions acrobats, who hung from ropes, juggled fire and stretched into positions we didn’t think were humanly possible. A stunning firework display was the climax of the night, which everyone agreed was one to remember. Our blisters were a constant reminder of how much self-inflicted fun we’d had for days to come! Thanks to Tara Lorimer and Zoe Marmentini for organising an amazing night – we’re not holding you responsible for the blisters, honest. We are looking forward to going back to Suite del Mar during the summer. Every weekend the Suite del Mar’s exclusive crowd will be rocking on the beach to the beat of Stefano’s drums whilst acrobats swing overhead and the moon glistens on the med. Suite del mar is open from 10am till 4am, 7 days a week; beach club, water sports, lunch(1pm till 4.30pm) & dinner (9pm till late) serving fresh fish, gourmet pizzas and sushi. Beach Boutique, Spa & VIP boat service. It’s a Suite life!

TRÈS CHIC Interview

Five minutes with

Stefano Cestra The resident drummer at Suite del Mar this summer

Photography by Johnny Gates

Apart from great rhythm, what does it take to be a world-class drummer? Most of all it takes a lot of feeling; you need to feel every single stroke you hit with your hand or drumstick, feel the vibrations in your body and soul and be satisfied with what you have just played. It takes the skill to play the right drum pattern at the right “time” to fill up the silence of a bar; it’s like writing a poem, trying to find the most appropriate words. The only difference is that you have to do it in real “time”. You have performed all over the world, how is the scene different in Marbella? Marbella is a special place to me, it’s a cosmopolitan town, the location is superb, I have great memories of past gigs and most of all I’m surrounded by warm, cool people. Being Italian and having moved to London in 1998, I love to fly over to a hot country like Spain where I find the Spanish community very similar to my culture and my traditions. 52 TRÈS CHIC

What makes you enjoy performing in Marbella? Here I enjoy the weather, the dancing and the appreciative crowd! What kind of sounds work best in Marbella? Deep house and funky-tribal house. These are always the winners; they are great for the beach and night clubs. They are a blank sheet of paper that I can fill with sweet tribal grooves. What has been your best night in Marbella? Without a shadow of a doubt the after party at Marbella Club, for the wedding of a dear friend of mine in 2010 and the opening of Suite del Mar in 2011 – great gigs! What is going through your head while you are performing? When I’m performing I usually concentrate on the track I’m playing along to and let my inspiration take over. I think about the crowd a lot too. I really want them to have a good time. At the end of the day one of the main goals of my profession is to make people happy and help them enjoy the moment. You have played for numerous celebrities at private events – Pink, Danni Minogue, Lenny Kravitz, Jensen Button, Sting, Bon Jovi and many more – who threw the wildest party? I didn’t actually play for Sting’s private event, I only had the honour to meet and chat with him at a Brian Adams private party where I was performing. The F1 world champion Jenson Button’s party was going at 350km per hour – a great atmosphere and I had the opportunity to play with the giant of electronic music Faithless. Which celebrity you’ve met made you most star struck? Definitely Lenny Kravitz. He has an amazing personality and charisma. I also met his drummer, at that time it was Cindy Blackman – it made my night!

Gold Star

Buddha Beach, Puerto Banus’ first and best boutique beach club, officially welcomed in its fourth summer season with its now traditional White and Gold Party. Marbella’s party crowd joined sports stars David Bentley – who earlier in the day had been a winner at the inaugural Buddha Beach and La Sala Golf Competition – and Ian Harte, while The Apprentice’s Liz Locke was also spotted in the VIP area. The White and Gold party was even more popular this year and great entertainment on the night included live DJ, percussion, electric violins, and Brazilian and Thai themed dancers. Another highlight of the evening was a superb acrobatic display on a trapeze suspended above the pool. The 600 guests also got into the spirit of the event by dressing in white and gold and enjoying the Laurent Perrier Champagne and a selection of tempting canapes on a sensational and stylish summer night. Here’s to another successful season at Buddha Beach!

PRIVATE Dancer Joaquín Cortés may not be shy when it comes to dancing bare-chested in front of thousands of people, but his personal life is strictly off limits, says Daisy Omissi who interviewed the flamenco star prior to his upcoming show in Marbella TRÈS CHIC 57

“It’s a way of living, a way of feeling and a way of communicating to the world through our culture and way of life“

here aren’t many flamenco dancers who travel the world and receive the same treatment as a rock star wherever they go! With screaming fans, groupies and girls fainting at his feet, Joaquín Cortés is renowned for being a ladykiller, just ask Naomi Campbell – he apparently broke her heart. Apart from being one of the sexiest men on earth, Joaquín Cortés is possibly the most iconic flamenco dancer on the international dance scene. His ground-breaking, contemporary style rocked the world of flamenco when he first burst onto the scene in the 1990s, and since then his notoriety as a performer and choreographer has gone from strength to strength. He has danced for George Bush at the White house, performed to sell out audiences at the Royal Albert Hall in London, appeared live on stage with J.Lo, and now he is coming to Marbella this July with his show Calé. If you weren’t a dancer what would you do for a living? It would be something to be with the world of arts; maybe a painter or sculptor, I don’t know, anything related to culture. Apart from dancing do you do anything else to keep fit? Apart from dancing, I do some cardio exercises, running and other sports; the truth is that I do really take care of my health and I have a very healthy lifestyle. Do your family and friends have any nicknames for you? Who hasn’t got a nickname from their childhood? When I was a little kid my eyes were very chinese-like, very narrow; everyone used to call me “Chinese” or “Little Chinese”. Do you have any rituals that you follow before a performance? Sometimes I cross myself and kiss the stage floor before I go out on stage.

What do you do to relax after a show? I have a shower, eat something and just relax for a while. Obviously, after a show my muscles are going two thousand miles per hour and it takes a while to wind down. How would your friends and family describe you? I think they’d say I am a very disciplined person, a fighter and above all a person who loves what he’s doing; I love my world. You have performed all over the world, which is your favourite city to dance in? There are so many beautiful cities in the world, it wouldn’t be fair to say I like one more than another, or prefer one country to another. It’s impossible to choose because there are so many interesting places to see. Your parents are from Malaga and Cordoba, does it feel special to be coming back to your roots of Andalucía to do a show? Of course, I feel very special being Andalusian. When you come back to your land where your origins are, where your family and friends live, it is always special. Do you still live in Spain when you aren’t touring? Well, I’m living in Spain, but I have lived in New York in the USA, and in London in the UK. Right now I am thinking about moving back to the USA. You have performed with Alicia Keys and Jennifer Lopez, are there any other stars you’d like to perform with? I had such good luck performing with those singers, but also I have performed with Michael Jackson at the Monte Carlo Awards, and with many different artists at international galas such as the MTV Awards, the Grammys and the Oscars. I love collaborating with other artists, because it makes you grow not only as an artist, but as a human being as well. We are a fashion magazine, so tell us about your fashion

style. The fashion world has always impressed me. The truth is that I was lucky having the godfathers of fashion dressing my shows such as Giorgio Armani, Jean Paul Gaultier, Paul Smith, Narciso Rodríguez and Dolce Gabbana. What are your favourite brands? I love Yves Saint Laurent, Tom Ford, Gucci, DSquared, Christian Dior, Armani and Balmain. So many… Is fashion an important part of your life? Yes. I believe what you wear is really important. In a way we are selling image, we have to have a defined personality and style, not only when you get on stage but when you walk down the street. Is it true you broke Naomi Campbell’s heart? I’m not going to talk about these things because I do not like talking about my prívate life. There are things that have happened in my life that I don’t deny, but I like being tactful about my personal life. How is the show you are bringing to Marbella different to previous shows you have produced? Calé is a fusion of all my work. It is a trip through time, through the history of my career. It is a culmination of 20 years work; a summary of the seven works that I created and which have gone around the world. The costumes are by Giorgio Armani. It was very successful at the premiere in New York at the Bacon Theatre and we have toured many countries with it. Now we are coming to Marbella so that people can enjoy this new spectacle. How does it feel to be known as the most famous flamenco dancer in the world? Above all, it is important that through my work we are taking our flamenco culture worldwide. I believe this is the message that we take with us wherever we go. Do you still get nervous before you go on stage? There is still a tingling in my stomach and there are some nerves, during those five minutes before I go out on stage. I think it’s necessary because it shows you’re alive and still worried about giving a great performance. It shows you still feel a lot of respect for the audience and I still want to give all that I have. This feeling makes me want to continue as an artist. How do you feel once you are onstage in front of an audience? I feel as if I were alone in my room with them undressing my body and soul for them, revealing my true personality. It’s like suffering a metamorphosis everytime I perform. What does word flamenco mean to you? It’s a way of living, a way of feeling and a way of communicating to the world through our culture and way of life. See Joaquín on July 16 at Recinto de Conciertos Playa del Pinillo. Finding the perfect man is all about sending out the right signals – take dating expert Kate Mulvey’s tips on getting the technique down to a tee Recapture Your Inner Child

Feel Good About Yourself

The essence of flirting is about radiating confidence and feeling good about yourself. And there is a good reason for this. When we feel confident we give off a positive energy, that is like a magnet attracting people to us. Of course, more often than not, our inner spirit gets buried under layers of shopping, work and all the other daily hassles that we have to deal with. Summer is a good time to step back from the everyday grind and give yourself some quick confidence boosts. You need to appreciate yourself inside and out. Stand in front of a full length mirror

Good flirts are playful, and have a sense of fun and adventure. If you want to find your inner-playfulness, ditch the grim, I’ve-had-a– hard-day-expression, and recapture your inner child. Children live entirely in the moment, unburdened by the past or worry about the future. Do something childlike each day, run barefoot along the beach, play frisbee in the surf. Take a new perspective on life, and see it, not as something you have to deal with, but as a new adventure.

Get A New Look

Whether it’s a dramatic new haircut or dying your hair strawberry blonde, buying more daring clothes or even a luscious lipstick, a summer makeover is one of the best ways to get into a full on flirting mood. Changing your look or just indulging in a bit of “me” time can

If you want to find your inner-playfulness, ditch the grim, I’ve-had-a–hard-day-expression, and recapture your inner child. and find five things that make you feel good about yourself. Take note of your physical attributes (eyes, lips, hair, legs, smile) and your style (hairdo, clothing, stance, make-up). After all, emotions guide our actions, so if you feel good, you will act in a positive way.

make you feel special and more adventurous. Have a mood lifting massage or pampering spa treatments, enough to make anyone feel sparkling. Get a “result” outfit together. Some things will make you feel sexier than others, and when you feel sexy, you look sexy. TRÈS CHIC 61

Make A Diva Entrance

Before you walk into a party/bar/dinner, stop and take a few deep breaths. Make sure your posture is good and that you have a smile on your face. Look around as if it’s your party: this will give you an air of confidence and relaxed control. The most magnetic people are immediately identifiable by the fact that they greet everyone with a warm, smile. You don’t need to have a naturally cheerful manner, it is about making an effort. No matter how you are feeling, if you can manage to feel a warm smile, it is the first step to developing natural magnetism.

Be Friendly

We always think of flirting as hair flicking, lip licking come-ons, but you know, the most successful flirts are people who make other people feel comfortable. In other words, you may look great, but if you are sending out “Im panicking” signals, you will push people away. Send out open, friendly body signals, that say, “Come here. I’m approachable and easy to talk to.” Sitting up straight with a relaxed posture shows that you are having a good time and are interested in people. If you are standing, uncross your arms and keep your palms facing upwards. If you send out friendly signals, then you will get friendly messages back.

Send Some Sex Signals

It’s summer after all, and everyone is feeling that bit sexier. Show a bit of flesh, buy a backless dress, shoulders are highlyerotic without being an overt come on. Let the straps of your dress fall down from your shoulders, ditto a cardigan,

Get Out The Giggle Pin

There is nothing more attractive than a woman who is laughing out loud. It lights up her face and acts like a neon sign flashing, “I’m a woman who is fun to be around. Laughter draws people to you, and when you laugh with one another, a positive bond is created. Of course, we can’t all feel like Joan Rivers every day, but you can build laughter into your life. Set aside a “funny” time each day. Read a humorous book; watch a film you know is guaranteed to make you laugh. Laughter makes you feel great, and leaves you feeling revitalised.

Be A Charmer

Charm is seduction without sex and a potent flirt technique. The method is simple. All you need to do is deflect attention from yourself onto the other person. Simply try to understand their spirit, match their mood, and make them feel great. Ask questions about their lives, pepper the conversation with supportive statements such as, “uh huh”, “yes I see”,and “how interesting”, it will soften them up and they will drop their defences.

Be A Tease

Teasing shows you have a sense of humour and helps everyone relax. The next time you are in a group, tell a funny/risqué story with some gentle innuendo, it will engage people’s attention. Introduce a gentle tug of war to get a bit of chemistry going. Disagree with what someone says, it will make them a bit anxious, and as soon as you are charming again, they will mistake it for affection. Disappear at some point – about 10inutes will do. It will give people time to miss you

Before you walk into a party/bar/dinner, stop and take a few deep breaths. Make sure your posture is good and that you have a smile on your face. Look around as if it’s your party: this will give you an air of confidence and relaxed control. let you shoe dangle from your toe. Have you ever seen a Hollywood actress play like a sex kitten? Try sending out some attractive body language signals (subtle, non-verbal cues) that say, I’m sexy and glamorous. Try the Glamour Pose: Arch your back to emphasise your bottom and flexibility (signals youth) and push your breasts forward. For added sex appeal, bite your bottom lip, play with your hair and look smouldering into the middle distance. It may sound corny, but like many obvious things it works, after all the Hollywood divas have been using it for years. 62 TRÈS CHIC

and they will wonder where you have gone.

Deal With A Put Down

Of course, not everyone is going to be putty in your hands. There are a lot of people out there who are unhappy and waiting to put you down. You can’t do anything about them, but what you can do is make sure you don’t fall for their behaviour. If you find yourself on the other end of a toxic put down try not to be defensive. Often someone will put you down because they feel inadequate. If you show you are hurt they know they have hit a sensitive spot and feel they have won. Keep your sense of humour and laugh at yourself. It shows that you are not affected. Or simply walk away. Alexandra Emmerlich and best friend Jazmin Duong, are the design duo behind new label UOMM, which recently won first prize at Marbella Crea for its fresh and innovative designs

Alexandra Emmerlich (24) and her best friend Jazmin Duong (23) came to our attention when their label, UOMM won first prize at Marbella Crea earlier this year. We are always excited when we discover new, raw talent right here on our doorstep and the UOMM brand is definitely one to watch. The girls, who both grew up in Estepona and have known each other since they were three years old, only became close friends in the last few years when they were studying tourism together in Malaga and discovered a mutual for fashion and designing. Ever since then they have been almost inseparable, designing clothes during the day and working at Olivia Valere by night to earn enough money to buy fabrics for their collection. “We started out making clothes for ourselves and our friends,” says Alexandra, who looks every inch the fashion designer in cut off shorts, vertiginous heels and fluorescent nail polish. “Then through word of mouth people started approaching us and commissioning outfits for parties and special occasions. Then the opportunity to participate in Malaga Crea came up in April and we decided to put together a proper 76 TRÈS CHIC

collection.” The designs duo’s first experience in the fashion industry didn’t lead to a first prize this time, but it gave the girls their first taste of putting together a whole fashion show from choosing the models and the music to fittings and choreography. “It was an amazing experience,” says Jazmin who, with never-ending legs and glowing skin, could easily be a model. “We learnt so much from Malaga Crea and it gave us the confidence to go on and win Marbella Crea a few months later.” The Marbella Crea victory plus a thriving Facebook page has very much put these girls on the fashion map in Marbella and they are busy planning their next fashion show, probably at Olivia Valere where they work in the evenings. “We have been approached by many venues to do a fashion show, but we just haven’t got time to put together the clothes and work in the evenings so we probably won’t do anything until the autumn,” says Alexandra. There is a show booked in for December, which is part of the Marbella Crea prize package but the venue is yet to be confirmed. Just like the name of the brand, which is combo of the two girls’ names, the style of UOMM is a complete mixture of their individual styles and inspirations. “I am the more adventurous and daring one. I am not afraid to attract attention to myself with what I wear,” admits Jazmin who is inspired by retro and vintage fashion, and

loves shopping at Camden Market or Brick Lane in London. Alexandra on the other hand brings balance and subtlety to the brand. “My personal style is more minimalist and elegant. So we are a good team; we both bring something unique to the clothes,” she says. Each girl’s individual aesthetic could also be traced back to their origins. Alexandra is half German and Jazmin half Vietnamese. They are really ying and yang when it comes to style and personality: Alexandra is definitely the quieter and more thoughtful of the two, while Jazmin is bright, bubbly and chatty. Until now, the girls have worked from their hearts and created their clothes through trial and error but now they are planning to move to Madrid or Barcelona to study design. “This September we want to go to one of Spain’s fashion capitals to learn more about professional fashion design and tailoring,” Jazmin explains. “We are going to live and study together, it is very exciting. We can’t wait.” Working in a big city will also give the girls the inspiration that is sometimes lacking living in Andalucia. “In Madrid or Barcelona, the fashion is so cutting-edge, here in Marbella it can be a bit dated,” says Alexandra who currently gets most her inspiration from old movies and music. “In the capital you can sit and people watch for hours, which can be very inspiring,” agrees Jazmin. Until the girls became close friends both had been interested in fashion but had always thought it would be too hard and too expensive to break into the industry, but things changed as they got to know each other. “We encouraged each other to take the next step from dreaming about fashion to actually trying to turn our dream into reality,” says Jazmin. “Until I met Alexandra I thought it was impossible, but we realised that if we did it together it would make it easier and we could support each other.” The feel of the latest UOMM collection is classic with a touch of the exotic thrown in: A plain white dress is embellished with feathers on the shoulder; black and white ensembles are given a hint of fluorescent to brighten them up. Overall the collection is simple, chic and feminine. There is no doubt that this collection is just a hint of what is to come. We can’t wait to meet the UOMM girls again in a few years to see how their line has evolved and matured, but for now we are just going to enjoy their fresh and fun designs, which are guaranteed to put a smile on your face. 78 TRÈS CHIC

The Ultimate Gibraltar Fashion & Lifestyle Experience The high street or in Gibraltar’s case “Main Street” has become increasingly significant in the daily lives of women on the rock. The feeling of excitement one gets while walking passed a shop, items of clothing jump out at you from the window displays, the rush of adrenaline you get from buying your favourite item, or even better the thrill of getting a bargain. All these moments have been experienced by most of us at some point during one of our shopping outings. We all look for the satisfaction of walking into a shop, and finding exactly what we want so while spending a day in sunny Gibraltar where would you start? Obviously taking into account the refreshment breaks a long the way. Here are a few pointers on where you can find the hottest restaurants, if you fancy a relaxing lunch, by the sea, while having a browse through the boutiques at Ocean Village Promenade, or if you want to put your party shoes on, and hit the dance floor, where you can find the funkiest beats and fresh tunes to get you in the mood.

Where to shop? Keeping it simple; there are certain shops, which sell attire for any occasion, for example, at the beginning of Main Street you will find, Dorothy Perkins. This tends to cater for the working woman, who looks for a more smart casual outfit. La Senza is located just opposite, where you can find the perfect fit in underwear and swimwear, exactly what’s needed for summer 2011. Moving up town you will find Mango, which is for the sophisticated woman who looks for a sleek high-end look, which is influenced by the Spanish fashion trend. Peacocks offers quality clothing without the higher price tag and lastly on our shopping guide would have to be Topshop, which is the trend setter’s haven, selling the Kate Moss range. If you are looking to finish off your outfit, look no further than Accessorize, located at the end of Main Street. Gibraltar offers a variety of UK fashion stores with UK prices. Where to eat? For everything else head down to Ocean Village. There you will find a variety of restaurants; Chinese cuisine at The Water Margin, fine Indian cuisine at Laziz, or American styled food at Harley’s. Why not try the 2 for 1 menu at Gibraltar’s Gala Casino, sit outside on the air lounge and admire the bay view while enjoying a Caesar Salad or chicken fajitas? Where to relax? While down in Ocean Village, after lunch why not treat yourself to a manicure or even a full body massage at B Beautiful Beauty and Spa? They offer a wide range of treatments that will leave you feeling satisfied. Finishing off your look, get your hair done, at Janice Hair Salon, where they specialise in hair treatments and extensions. Where to party? Now that you have found the perfect outfit, spent the afternoon relaxing, while enjoying a lovely meal, I think it’s time to finish the day off with a bottle of wine and a few moves on the dance floor. Savannah Gibraltar, located at Leisure Island is the place to be this summer bringing you the biggest international acts we have ever seen on the rock. Gibraltar…the little city with a lot to offer!

Clockwise from left: The cool Savannah bar and restaurant; Ocean Village; Shoppers walking through “Main Street”; A couple of shoppers look happy with their new purchases; Topshop’s new s/s campaign; Enjoy a manicure at B Beautiful.

Can romance ever survive across the class divide? As the dating pool of eligible bachelors get smaller and smaller, writer Kate Mulvey dates her very own gamma man

“‘Come ‘ere my posh princess,’ he would say, pulling me towards him, and revealing a tattoo of an EAGLE ON HIS BICEP. It was a bit like having a holiday from myself and my usual kind of life.”

“Alright gorgeous,” a cockney voice said. I spun round to see a tall man in a Levis shirt and jeans leering down at me. Part Grant Mitchell, part Alfie, he was handsome and rugged with a builders suntan and a cheeky grin on his face. Before I had time to say something withering in reply, he plonked himself down, leaning in just enough, so I could smell his cheep cologne. His name was Gary, and apparently he knew my friends brother´from somewhere along the coast. He managed to get my number, within a few minutes. And after a couple of weeks we began seriously dating. Whatever made me start down the road of romancing someone from the other side of the tracks, I am not really sure. I had never dated down before. But then, I had just come out of a tricky relationship and I was flattered by the attention. But it was more than that. Gary was different to anyone I had met before.

Compared to my usual public school dating fodder, with their high octane lifestyles, he was a breath of fresh air. Down to earth and honest, at first it was easy to see the attraction between us. He seemed to be everything I was not. He would laugh at my foreign films and we would end up watching Bruce Willis in Die Hard. Ok so he hadn’t read Proust, in the original French, actually he hadn’t read at all, and he left school before he took his o’levels. But he was witty and street smart. In the evenings, we would sit on the veranda, “Come ‘ere my posh princess,” he would say, pulling me towards him, and revealing a tattoo of an eagle on his bicep. It was a bit like having a holiday from myself and my usual kind of life. Romancing across the class divide can hold a sort of exotic appeal. The chemistry between working class lad and posh chick is all about the other. Instead of dinner parties, we spent our time in his local pub, in Marbella . Permanently welded to the upholstered banquettes, me with a fizzy water and him with his beer and whisky chaser, I felt like I was on a film set of Eastenders in the sun. And more often than not a physical fight would break out. TRÈS CHIC 83

Instead of avocado salad with seeds, (rabbit food according to him) we were eating chips with everything and he drank beer by the bucket load. Whilst all these things seemed to be fun whilst we were in the love haze, the things that divided us became more and more significant. For a start, it was difficult trying to adapt to each others different social circles. His idea of a good night out, was watching football, (he was a Fulham supporter). I cringed every time he came home wearing his replica Fulhamshirt with a six pack of lager in one hand and cigarette in the other. So what is the answer? Should we all be swapping our type A investment bankers for a muscled bound plumber who can whisper sweet nothings and fix the loo at the same time? I remember taking him to a friends dinner party. As soon as Gary stepped into the plush apartment with the expensive art on the walls, I could feel his whole body stiffen. He was out of his milieu and we both knew it. He felt emasculated, and in an effort to flex his masculine muscle, he morphed into a caricature of himself. He drank too much, challenged one of the men to an arm wrestle (which of course he won) and made an awkward pass at the hostess. Everyone forgave his social faux pas, but he and I knew that this was the beginning of the end. The point is, if opposites initially attract, what at first was appealing becomes irritating to each other. For a start, we laughed at different things. He watched Only Fools and Horses, I liked Fraser. I resented the way he mocked my friends, saying that they were ’poncy’,and whilst I had once loved his cockney banter, I now found it boring. Youth Search

Ever feel lost in a world of skincare, trailing around the beauty counters being beckoned over by leering counter assistants, all convinced that their range is for you? This may sound like a bad dream, but this is how many women feel about choosing the right product. So, let’s help you through. There is a veritable buffet of antioxidant creams on the market, and those containing vitamin C, green tea and coenzyme Q10  are all great for warding off the damaging signs of aging. Or home in on Clinique’s Youth Surge SPF 15 Age Decelerating Moisturizer (£27.40), this boosts your skin’s natural defence capabilities, so skin looks younger for longer.

With colours such as popping purples, dusty blues, and yummy coral pinks, a loaded brush of bold colour can have you looking fresh and feeling on-trend in seconds. Alongside the tropical teasers there is plethora of nudes coming through for the less adventurous. As seen at Marc Jacobs and Yigal Azrouel, the nudes are soft and subtle with an understated elegance. Whether you like to paint each finger a different popping shade or stick to softer hues, the outlook is bright to have summer licked.

Cutting the Detox-Retox flux… OF LIFE Osteopath Hilary Maclise explains how TO MAKE IT COUNT AND enjoying the results

ummer heat is here so it is time to put on that bikini again and head for the beach. Are you feeling confident in your skin or are you putting yourself on an emergency diet? Hopefully, your decision to change your eating habits actually comes from a desire for wanting to be healthy and feel good – not just look good. The physical results come following the habit changes. Get ready to be healthy, looking great and feel happy and confident! So what’s the secret formula? The magical answer to everyone’s prayers? The quick fix, tricks and tips? Ok, here it is…drum roll please… Commit to long-term goals to change your habits and attitude towards your body’s health. Even a baby-step goal is a good start. I will, of course, give you some suggestions to help guide you towards a healthier body and lifestyle. It is important to have a place to start. And the “finish” or goal is total balance.

Try a new method this year: Think of changing your habits for your long-term health not just to shed a few kilos for the summer. Go for feeling healthy, balanced and strong! Why not? I would answer the following questions for yourself and have it with you all the time on a piece of paper or card: • What habits do you want to change and by when? • What are your motivations to do so? • What benefits do you hope to gain? • How does your state of balance benefit others? • How will you feel when you have met your goals and how will you celebrate?

Hilary Maclise, Marbella Body and Yoga, Centro Comercial Guadalmina / Tel: 637 564 031

When you commit to your personal goal of balanced health, there should be no feeling of deprivation or intention to starve yourself. Just the word “diet” has a very negative connotation for many of us. Think about the health benefits you will experience and the physical results of feeling less puffy, more energetic and fit. Let me first explain to you that the body has many functions it has to perform every day without even being asked: draining, breathing, beating, communicating, digesting… the list goes on. The body sometimes needs a break! The organs, intestines, lungs and other areas in the body get “congested” and inflamed from working overtime. Extra energy is spent in trying to process old antibiotics, built up toxins and heal unrepaired tissues. All while you’re working away throughout your day! Magic I know. This is why we feel sluggish, puffy and no matter how many times we stop eating those biscuits, we still can´t get rid of that muffin top effect in our favorite jeans. It’s actually not the biscuits; it’s the build up of toxins and residual waste that create inflammation in the intestines and give that muffin its top! Just as you have to change the filters of your car, your body´s filtering systems must be cleansed as well. Imagine what extra energy you will have when you do a bit of a healthy cleanse or what is also known as a detox.

You don’t have to fast to cleanse the body (although taking a break from food is a great practice one day a week to keep the digestive fires burning). To get the inertia going, but not required, I suggest the 5-day cleanse by Young Living Essential Oils. It has proven effective with my clients to cleanse the body and shed unwanted kilos in a healthy manner. The 5-Day Nutritive Cleanse™ facilitates gentle and effective cleansing to improve overall health and well-being. This nutritive cleanse includes an energising, replenishing, whole wolfberry nutrient infusion, a high quality, super food energizer and nutritive powder, and softgels, which soothes gastrointestinal discomfort and supports healthy digestion. FOOD TO AVOID or 695 84 5416 In some eastern philosophies, it is said that food should be taken as medicine. The body is treated as a temple. And just as you would polish and clean to keep a temple sacred, you should keep the body clean too. For this reason, in Ayurvedic Medicine the body is treated without antibiotics and balance is restored to the body and the mind. Whether you decide to give yourself a jump start with a cleanse or not, here are some changes in habits that I can suggest as longterm goals, as well as, your personal goal for two weeks. Really give yourself these two weeks and then your body will be more prepared to handle an occasional late night out, a dessert fest and coffee or a cheese tasting. I suggest the following foods be avoided. Most people no longer have digestive enzymes to digest these foods (and therefore, cause inflammation, allergies and congestion in the body). I also include suggestions for substitutes so you don’t feel too deprived.

After two weeks of a committed regimen, you will feel and look great. And how are you going to celebrate making a goal and sticking to it? Hopefully, you will feel so much better, that you will naturally develop healthier habits to last your lifetime and fit in with your lifestyle. Good luck!

La Posada Sacristia proves that there is so much more to Tarifa than wind turbines and surfing – there is luxury too!

It took a long time for my most stylish friends in Marbella to convince me that I was missing out by not taking a trip to Tarifa. Like so many other misguided visitors to the south coast of Spain, I was under the impression that Tarifa was only a place for kitesurfers and hippies, and not really a place for anyone without a wetsuit and a lump of board wax. What I didn’t realise is that Tarifa is a place of contrasts. One day you can see the landscape of Morocco as clear as a bell and the next it is so hazy you’d never guess that Africa is just a 35-minute boat ride away. On some days the wind blows so hard that kitesurfers make a beeline for the beach from as far away as Malaga, while the next day children play happily in the sand without so much as a gentle breeze to ruffle their hair. The vibe in this atmospheric and laid back beachside town changes from street to street and from building to building. One minute you feel like you are in a typical Spanish pueblo and the next you could be in Africa. This is Tarifa’s magic formula and unique appeal. Everyone who visits Tarifa comes for a different reason. Yes, there are those who are here solely to take advantage of the magnificent beach and surfing opportunities, but then other people

“I was under the impression that Tarifa was only a place for KITESURFERS AND HIPPIES, and not really a place for anyone without a wetsuit and a lump of board wax ”

come just to enjoy the unique sensation of being at a crossroads between two cultures. If you want to go down the hippy route and camp close to the beach then it can totally tick that box. But if you want to go in for a more glamorous experience and enjoy a luxurious break in sophisticated surroundings then we have the place for you! Posada La Sacristia is Tarifa’s best kept secret. This beautiful, 10-room, boutique hotel was originally a dilapidated 17th century private house that was lovingly restored to its former glory by the current owners – one of whom is an architect and the other a chef. The refurbishment, which took two years to complete, is so sensitive to the original features of the house that when you walk in the hotel you still walk over original Tarifa stone floors and mosaic tiles. Authentic Roman pillars line the inner patio area, which is illuminated by spotlights created from Moroccan copper trumpets hanging from the ceiling. Despite its historic roots, La Sacristia retains a chic and contemporary feel, which is achieved through a choice of cool, neutral colours on the walls and a minimalist aesthetic throughout. The combination of antique, Asian, Spanish and Moroccan influences hang together TRÈS CHIC 101

effortlessly giving the hotel an eclectic and distinctive style that only someone with an amazing eye for design could pull off successfully. Although La Sacristia is only 50 metres from the main street, which is bustling with busy bars and shops, it maintains a calm and tranquil quality that makes you relax as soon as you check in. Each of the 10 rooms within the hotel has its own personality and character depending on the size and the shape of the space it is in. In an old house like this no two rooms are the same, which must have been a challenge at the time of conversion. What is consistent throughout the hotel is attention to detail, from the bowl of oranges decorating a tiny recess in the main staircase to the vase of fresh flowers on the reception desk. As well as the 10 rooms in the main hotel, La Sacristia has also expanded with luxury suites that sprawl over several floors in other converted houses around the town. The advantage of these suites is the extended space that guests can enjoy as well as the extra privacy. Each one has a unique selling point; a funky staircase; a contemporary, free-standing bath;

amazing views of Africa; stunning, modern art. Take your pick. Whichever one you choose will find something that takes your breath away. All of the suites are located within easy walking distance of the hotel so they still benefit from its excellent service and facilities, including the in-house massage room, which is located at the very top of the hotel and has amazing views over the rooftops of Tarifa. La Sacristia’s piece de resistance is its restaurant. The passion and attention which is lavished on the hotel by the owner who did all the design, is equalled by the other partner who runs the kitchen. Dish after dish of fresh produce are sent out to the dining room to the delight of inhouse guests and other visitors to the restaurant. We recommend trying the seared tuna. Tarifa is the biggest exporter of fresh tuna to Japan, and the tuna that isn’t exported to sushi-land is served in local restaurants such as La Sacristia. There is nowhere in Tarifa that does it better than here. A new addition to the hotel is a small designer boutique that has been created by style guru, Anette Lundgren. Recently back from a buying trip to Paris, Anette has filled the store with covetable fashion and accessory brands that bring a fresh shopping perspective to Tarifa. What La Sacristia manages to achieve where other boutique hotels often fail, is the ability to combine its individual character and atmosphere with all the little luxuries you’d expect from a big five-star chain: fresh, fluffy towels; large, comfortable beds and pillows; and attentive service. After a night at La Sacristia I had to admit that my Marbella friends were right, Tarifa definitely is the place for me and I didn’t even get my toes wet. Raising the bar

Cocktails and light bites at La Casita offer more than the average bar menu As we are already firm fans of eating out at La Casita, we couldn’t wait to get down to the La Heredia restaurant and try out its new tapas and cocktails menu. Of course, being biased, we decided it was only fair to get some lovely ladies along to give us their honest opinions about the light bites and beverages that you can order at the bar or in the comfy sofa area of the restaurant. The new menu is designed for people who want to have a more informal dining experience at La Casita without missing out on chef Lawrence’s amazing culinary skills. It is the perfect option for groups of friends who want a fun night out with a few drinks and snacks in a relaxed and stylish environment; the restaurant has been recently refurbished and expanded so the décor is as fresh and contemporary as the chef’s modern, innovative approach to food.

The cocktails: Libido

Zubrowka vodka, apple and orange juices, raspberry coulis, Chambord.

Falernum Rum Punch

Rum, apricot brandy, fresh lime, homemade falernum and pineapple juice

The menu: Cod and prawn gyozos Gyozos are a type of chinese dumplings filled with Cod and Prawns. Anna: “These are my favourite dish of the evening. Tasty, fresh and filling too.” Sarah: “It is really nice to have these parcels filled with cod as well as prawn. The cod is a bit chunkier and meatier, and makes a refreshing change from prawns.”

Roast pumpkin gow gees Gow Gees are pastry “bags“ or sachets filled with roast pumpkin. Anna: “The absolutely perfect dish for vegetarians. The roast pumpkin gives the pastry parcels a sweet edge and a smooth texture.” Sarah: “These are like mini pasties – totally yummy! I could eat a whole plate of them.”

Boquerones “Caruso”, roast garlic and fennel ali-oli Caruso are Anchovies filled with smoked mozarella, breadcrumbed and deep fried, with ali - oli ( mayo, garlic ) and fennel added. Anna: “Fennel ali-oli? I have never tasted this before and it is so much nicer than the garlic version.” Sarah: “I don’t really like boquerones if they aren’t super fresh and these taste like they came straight out of the sea and onto my plate.”

Zucchini fries Lawrence’s famous zucchini fries are a firm favourite of La Casita regulars. Look out for these and a bigger selection of veg and fish fries at his new restaurant La Fishita, which is opening in Nueva Andalucía in August. Anna: “How does Laurence get these fries so light?” Sarah: “Way better than potato fries and great for munching on with a cocktail or two.” TRÈS CHIC 105

If you want to party in Marbella the obvious destination is Nikki Beach. Famed for its decadent atmosphere and amazing DJs, this glamorous beach bar and club attracts a jet set crowd from around the world. It is the first place people think of when they are planning a night out on the town with their friends, but not necessarily the first place people think of when they are planning to go out for dinner. Only those in the know, realise that Nikki Beach actually has one of the most eclectic and value for money menus around town! Surprised? We were! When the Nikki Beach team invited us over for dinner, we really had no idea what to expect. Our last experience of the club was dancing the night away to banging tunes at the opening party surrounded by 1,000 other revellers, not sitting under the stars being serenaded by a live flamenco guitarist playing over the top of laid-back, chill-out sounds. What a contrast! Relaxing to the mellow vibe, looking out over the sea and enjoying the sound of the waves crashing on the beach, it was hard to imagine this was the same place we last saw people dancing on the tables in white bikinis. Dinner at Nikki Beach has a different vibe altogether. Of course, it still incorporates all the quintessential Nikki Beach qualities: 108 TRÈS CHIC

amazing service, stylish décor and a sophisticated crowd, but the atmosphere is far more conducive to enjoying an intimate dinner for two or with a group of close friends. The biggest temptation, without a doubt, is to come to the club for a day on the beach and bring a change of clothes so that you can segue seamlessly from day to night and stay for dinner. A number of our fellow diners had cleverly planned just this and made us very envious as they sat down for dinner looking tanned and relaxed. We soon got in the mood with a couple of cocktails – after all you can’t come to Nikki Beach and not try the infamous Nikki Beach Mojito. We also couldn’t resist the June Sparkle – Grey Goose vodka infused with pomegranate, strawberry and pineapple juice topped with chilled Mumm Champagne. Now, that’s what we call a cocktail! Our next big surprise of the evening came when we served the hugest starter portions we have ever seen. We were so shocked that we even had to ask the handsome restaurant manager, Julian, if there had been a mistake and they’d brought us main courses by accident. But, nope, he reassured us that these stomach-busting dishes were indeed our entrées. Despite the hearty-sized portions, we quickly polished off the loin of tuna in nori seaweed, which was dipped in tempura and served with a light watermelon and wasabi sauce, and the wagyu beef roll. We even ate the edible pansy garnish that sat on top of the tuna. If it is a light dinner you are after then a couple of the Nikki Beach starters would easily fill you up. However, we’d recommend the full Monty as what came next couldn’t have been more enjoyable. Having been pleasantly surprised by the generous-sized starters, we should have been prepared when a plate of BBQ baby back ribs the size of a house were placed in front of us. Not one but two racks of foot-long ribs are served up per person – and boy, you would need the appetite of a sumo wrestler to munch your way through them all. We took the challenge and gave it a shot. Finger-lickingly delicious and succulent (thanks to a secret marinade that chef, David Farber, wasn’t willing to reveal), we demolished most of the ribs and even managed to finish off the polenta, cheddar cheese and jalapeno chips, which are an innovative alternative to run-of-the-mill potato chips. At just 24 euros, this dish is astonishing value for money. By the end of the ribs we looked and felt like sumo wrestlers, but we still had two dishes to go. The grilled filet of beef in a crust of wild mushroom gave the carnivores

among us another treat. Served on top of grilled asparagus and fondant potato, the steak was finished off with a red wine demi-glace – a very sophisticated but satisfying dish. On the lighter side, the poached sea bass and white tiger shrimp rolled in courgette was a definite favourite. Set on potato and green apple confit and served with asparagus, the combination of fresh fish and succulent vegetables could not have been more delicate. A light chocolate mousse with cream ice-cream and a rice crispy wafer was just about all we could manage for dessert at the end of what can only be described as one of the most creative, innovative and value-for-money meals we have enjoyed in Marbella. CHINA DOLLS The art of Cui Xiuwen highlights the continuing fragility of women’s position in Chinese society. Born in 1970, Cui Xiuwen has become an internationally recognised conceptual photographer and video artist. Her work has been shown at the International Centre of Photography in NY. It has also been collected by the Pompidou Art Centre in Paris. In 2004, she became one of the first Chinese artists to host a show of her work at the Tate Modern in London. This summer her work will be shown in Marbella at Poligono Gallery’s “Masters of Chinese Photography” exhibition. The exhibition will be running from the 8th of July to 15th September. Since 2004, Cui has been working on photographic montages, made up of photographs that she takes and manipulates on a computer, printing them on a large scale. In the series “Angel” on display at the gallery, Cui Xiuwen uses adolescent girls and the subject of pregnancy to make a powerful critic of a patriarchal society treating women as commodities. “I want to express female’s process of growing up,” Cui says, “I put adult mentality on a teenage girl, I think that what the girl bears is as much as a woman’s growth and build up.” The girls in the pictures seem dwarfed by their surroundings, lost and vulnerable. The allwhite schoolgirl uniform adds to her virginal appearance. There is a sense of isolation of the figures from each other and they appear with their eyes closed, “No longer wishing to see the outside world, reality, nor to be confronted by it or to have to deal with it,” she explains. The golden palatial roof tiles, red and grey masonry walls remind us of the Forbidden City in Beijing, alluding to the imperial dynasties and their patriarchal agenda. Women in general have been outsiders in Chinese society, especially in traditional culture. Sold into other families as wives, concubines, courtesans, and maids while still young, they lost all chances of a normal life if they became pregnant without being married. In today’s China they are still subject to the patriarchal conventions of the past

and the on-going preference for male children that results in the abortion of female foetuses and the subsequent reduction of the number of women in China. In addition, government policies restrict child bearing, and pregnant women wanting medical care often need to have a pregnancy certificate. There is a surprising contrast between the poetic and mystical figures of the girls, unavoidably erotic “Lolitas”, when in the artist’s hands they are actually speaking of exploitation, and the isolation of the exploited. The critic is powerful yet the final result is subtle, with harmoniously balanced arrangements of colours and shapes. This contrast is typically used by Chinese artists. Cui disavows any feminist agenda. She maintains that her subjects, though apparently female, represent the whole of society. The make-up of the girls, with its reddish blotches around eyes that mark the whitened skin, suggests underlying bruises. And so beyond the fragilities, insecurities and social problems of adolescence, we question ourselves what concealed scars we carry. Cui Xiuwen hopes we can become more conscious of them so that we can maybe transcend them. The fact of observing the wounds can help us heal them. For more information contact the gallery at or call 952 898 998.

AWARD SEASON STYLE DANGER DANGER Once a cheater always a cheater. Oh dear, it looks like Cheryl Cole has lost some sense. Cheryl Cole has reportedly reconciled with her cheating ex-husband Chelsea footballer Ashley Cole, and has even spent a night with him at the home they shared when they were married and just before he prepared to go away on holiday. A source explains, “They were saying what a special night it was. They were mucking about like old times just playing pool, smoking and having a few drinks. There wasn’t any awkwardness between the two of them and they seemed very comfortable together. She knew Ashley was going away so it made sense to be there. They spent the night together and got on brilliantly. Who knows what will happen when Ashley gets back from his holiday. Cheryl doesn’t deal with a crisis well. Behind the smiles and the glamour she can be quite insecure. Dealing with her marriage split was hard but her career was a massive help to her then. She also had Simon by her side and I think she thought he’d always be there for her, helping guide

In frustration Adele wrote on her website, “There is absolutely nothing I can do but take the doctors’ advice and rest some more.” She has already postponed her American tour due to the illness, and it is likely that she will have to cancel further shows. Adele has also been warned that her smoking habit will make her problem worse. A source close to the singer told the News of the World, “Adele’s voice is very special. But if she continues to abuse it in the way she has, then she could lose it completely.” Joss Stone was recently the target of an alleged violent robbery plot. Committed - A Love Story

By Elizabeth Gilbert Most of you will have read Elizabeth Gilbert’s best seller Eat, pray, love and if you haven’t then you’ve probably seen the movie starring Julia Roberts and Javier Bardem. Committed picks up from where we left things in Eat, pray, love. Elizabeth Gilbert meets and falls in love with a dashing Brazilian man named Felipe, and having both gone through horrendous divorces they have solemnly sworn never to get remarried. But fate has other plans for these two. The US government gets involved and Felipe is banned from re-entering the USA. The only way for him to return and for them to be together is to swap vows and get married. Committed is a skeptical piece on marriage and a compilation of all Elizabeth’s fear and doubts on the subject. While effectively in exile, and waiting for Felipe to be able to return with her to the USA, the two of them spend a year in South East Asia, time which she spent researching and going through all her questions and doubts on marriage. The book is split into eight chapters, each chapter looks at one aspect of marriage, including the history of marriage, the surprises marriage brings, the impact of marriage on women, autonomy, subversion and many more. Whilst reading you can almost see and understand her train of thought, and understand how she dealt with her issues. Issues which, if not all, most of us will at some point on a larger or smaller scale, have to deal with. As a young woman in a serious relationship but not yet married this “self-help” book was very eye-opening and informative. Questions and doubts, which I didn’t even know I had, were not answered as such, but helped me to form a stronger idea on the tricky issues that surround all relationships. Why will you enjoy this book? Because it’s eyeopening!

of what she went through when she was younger. Within these pages we get a glimpse of what everyday life was like for Jamaican slaves living on a sugar plantation. Although the story is set in a time when having slaves was the norm and then in the consequent years of emancipation, the novel is not just about slavery, it is the story of a woman’s life and the years and experiences she lived through. It’s about her family, her lovers and the people she met along the way. The author explores not only the horrendous and inhumane treatment which Jamaican slaves endured, in fact she does not even dwell on these issues, her main focus is on the culture and society which evolved during and because of these times. Andrea Levy is also the author of Small Island winner of Whitbread Book of the year and the Orange book prize for fiction. Why will you enjoy this book? Because the style in which the novel is written is utterly captivating.

“Natalia our very own BOOK WORM, talks to us about her FAVOURITE BOOKs of the moment”

The Long Song

By Andrea Levy This story is set early 19th century Jamaica, a time when slavery had already been part of society for two hundred years. The narrator of the book is Miss July, an old woman living with her son and his family. Prompted by him she writes the story of her life;
