Waterworks Park fall 2012 | architecture.studio IV | instructor.miriam.gusevich

WATERWORKS Park is located by the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn, NY. Once a cargo transportation hub, the canal is now recognized as one of the most polluted bodies of water in the United States. The site is in much need of facilities that can be shared by the diverse community

01

demographics as well be designed to maintain the canal clean. Linear forms are created, these which allow for flexibillity and imagination to the people of Brooklyn. The un-prescriptive park allows for more improptu activities, and allows the park to become what the people want it to be.

Subsurface Gravel Provides effective year round stormwater treatment even in cold climates while at the same time reduces peak stormwater flows.

Cubist Garden fall 2012 | architecture.studio IV | one.week.project instructor.miriam.gusevich

Using Juan Gris’ cubist painting “Guitar on a Table”, I reinterpreted the two dimensional elements of the painting and extruded three dimensional forms to create a garden. It was essential to understand the richness of the composition by remaining faithful to the painting’s formal order. I interpreted the layers by extruding and overlaping vertical and horizontal planes three dimensionally. Also by eliminating layers of the painting, I was able to simplify, leaving the “bare bones” of the main composition

Through a series of physical models, I explored the space implied within the painting and made it explicit through spatial analysis and compositional transformations. horizontal space

Urban Renewal fall 2012 | architecture.studio IV | instructor.carlos.reimers

The urban renwal focuses on the South East waterfront in Washington, DC. The site is now an unorganized part of the city, with the recently built Nationals Stadium, there is no other function or relation to the rest of the area. It is my focus to connect the waterfront and create more retail by connecting these areas with green space and paths.

17

The most challenging part was to connect the Nationals stadium to lower pedestrian walkways and to the Waterfront area. My main idea revolves around creating a rising green space to be able to walk over the stadium’s parking lot and attract people to the Waterfront in order for this South East area of DC is fully usable.

DHS Visitor’s Center spring 2013 | architecture.studio IV | instructors.dave.shovebrown+george.dove team.josh.jacques+adam.williams+adrian.gittens

The Department of Homeland Security is being built in the historic St. Elizabeth’s campus in Washington, DC. Once a psychiatric hospital, it is now level 5 security campus. The site is in need of a visitor center that will serve as a security screening for campus visitors, as well as a memorial for the tragic events of the 911 terrorists attacks as well as attacks to The Pentagon. The recovered soil from the pentagon is used as a green wall that runs throughout the building, starting from the lobby area all through the 911 gallery.

27

As a group we decided to focus on maintaning the institutional aesthetics of a government building but adding a twist to make it inviting to the public. A double axial focus would allow the visitors to move quickly through the security screening into te campus, or direct you towards the 911 memorial gallery. Curvial forms are created to guide you chronologically trough images and artifacts remaining of the 911 attacks. This reflection trail reminds the visitor why extreme security measures have to be taken to protect U.S. citizens.

Dance Theatre fall 2011 | architecture.studio III | instructor.julie.kim

The Dance Theatre is located in Tentleytown, DC, an up an coming part of the city populated with vehicular and foot traffic. While new structures are being built, the area’s fauna is disappearing. The site is in much need of green spaces. Courtyards are inserted in strategic parts of the theatre to create a daily

35

interaction of human activities with nature. The main courtyard is shared with the lobby stairs and with two main dance studios. The second courtyard connects to the office spaces as well as the waiting spaces for the Blackbox theatre. The third courtyards ceates an outdoor seating space for the cafe area.

Material Installation fall 2011 | architecture.studio III | one week project team.tylerthurston. nickgentile filipedasilva. saharmohammad instructor.julie.kim

This group installation project followed a material study in which we explored the effects of blow torching aluminum sheets By heating the aluminum and puncturing holes in it, we achieved a golden brown array of colors. This allowed it to reflect the harsh but natural light from te skylight above, and soften the light through the canopy onto the first floor of the building. The focus of the project was to be aesthetically pleasing as well as functional in the way it improved the lighting conditions. We were paired with a team exploring plastic tubing, which provided overall structural support for the canopy surface.
