WAS A GREAT YEAR AT CHAMINADE JULIENNE!
THROUGHOUT THIS ANNUAL REPORT, YOU’LL READ ABOUT ACCOMPLISHMENTS
What adjustments are necessary to our curriculum and methods of instruction to ensure that our students are successful in college?
of our students, progress of the campus master plan, the active engagement of alumni, parents, and friends in the life of the school, and external recognition received by the school and our people. It was a great year.
I invite you to revel in these successes since progress is only possible with the generous commitment of so many in the
We are confident that we are asking the right questions.
school community. Your support, documented in these pages, provides the vital resources necessary to sustain the excellent Catholic educational experience at CJ. On behalf of the Marianists and Sisters, our Board of Trustees, teachers and staff members, and, most importantly, our students who benefit most directly from your support, I thank you. While we acknowledge achievement, it has never been the nature of Chaminade Julienne to dwell too long on what is now past. We would rather be working for what is to come: identifying opportunities, overcoming challenges, creating strategies, and moving boldly and confidently into the future. Perhaps such forward-thinking comes from St. Julie and Blessed Chaminade, our patrons and founders, who had ambitious dreams for their missions. Or, from the Sisters and the Marianists, who continue to demonstrate vibrant action on behalf of God’s people. Or, maybe from our shared history of immigrant Catholics who built schools and churches and gave Dayton its creative and enterprising spirit. Whatever the source, we are compelled to prepare for the future, knowing that the needs and expectations of our students and their families, our Church, and our community will continue to evolve. So, we have embarked this year on the next phase of a strategic planning process, designed to determine our goals and actions over the next three to five years. We have prepared for this phase by examining data about our school, the region, and Catholic education, reviewing educational trends and research, and discussing preliminary concepts with leaders in the community. From this, school leadership, Trustees, and faculty and staff have identified the issues we believe to be most significant to Chaminade Julienne’s future. Among these are: •
How can we continue to attract, develop, and retain great teachers, staff members, and leaders?
How can we sustain the positive momentum that has led to enrollment growth over the last few years?
Now, we begin the task of assembling teams of smart, committed people to whom we propose these and other questions. We will ask them to consider how other schools have approached similar issues, review research about teaching and learning, test possible goals, identify strategies and their anticipated impact, and, ultimately, recommend action. Some of these people are already on our Board, its advisory councils, our parent groups, and our faculty and staff. Others we will need to recruit from the extended CJ community which, fortunately, includes an ample supply of smart, dedicated people. Twelve months from now, I fully expect that we will look back and be able to say once again that it was a great year. Our students will achieve in the classroom, music room, athletic venues, and community service sites; our teachers will continue to innovate and lead; our volunteers will find new ways of getting “it” done; and your generosity will usher in growing excitement about our campus and programs. Just as importantly, I will be able to share with you the approach Chaminade Julienne will take toward addressing the big questions we have asked — how we will continue and extend our tradition of excellence; how we will more fully embrace the mantle of leadership for Catholic education; and how we will respond to Jesus’ call to be the light of the world “so they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly father.” (Matthew 5:14-17) So, as a contributor to the success of this past year, please join in celebration as you read this Annual Report. Then, as you turn the last page, know that we are already at work shaping a bright future for Chaminade Julienne — a future you are making possible. May God continue to bless you in great abundance. Sincerely,
How can we assure the Catholic identity of the school, shaped and enlivened by the charisms of the Marianists and the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur?
Daniel J. Meixner ‘84
How can we reshape our financial model to have sufficient resources to invest in growth and innovation at tuition rates that can be affordable to all our families?
Leadership Giving Continues To Grow
For the past five years the most significant area of growth for the annual fund has been with the number of individuals who have prioritized CJ by joining our Eagle Council. These individuals have made gifts of $1,000 or more and the total value of their gifts accounts for more than 70% of the total 2012 Annual Fund revenue.

HIGHLIGHTS WE CELEBRATE THE SUCCESSES OF THE YEAR — GREAT AND SMALL. WE OFFER THEM TO GOD WITH A PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING FOR THE MANY BLESSINGS SEEN AND UNSEEN THAT HAVE BEEN BESTOWED ON THE CJ COMMUNITY AND ALL WHO ARE MEMBERS OF THIS WONDERFUL FAMILY.
As part of their year-long justice project, the seniors helped spotlight the tragedy of human trafficking. This year’s Sister Dorothy Stang Symposium featured a survivor of human trafficking, and was followed by a community training and work session a month later. Students, faculty and staff contributed $3,800 to help in the effort to rescue victims. During Hunger & Homelessness Awareness week, students learned about the poor in our area. The school’s outreach resulted in $3,100 and 2,000 non-perishable items donated to those in need in & around the Dayton area. Students participated in several other charitable events including Touchdown for Tots and the St. Vincent de Paul drive which filled two large trucks with donations. Students, faculty and staff combined to serve 10,386 hours volunteering throughout the local and global community. The hours are valued at nearly a quarter million dollars. This total does not include the minimum number of service hours required by religion class for students at each grade level Through the ministry and service program, students are connected to over 50 service sites in the Dayton area as well as mission trips to Cincinnati, Indiana and Belize for a vast array of service learning opportunities. Just one example is Join Hands Miami Valley when over 140 students and 15 faculty and staff members spent part of an October weekend giving back to the Miami Valley. CJ students were given leadership roles in the Catholic Schools Unity Mass held at the University of Dayton for all Catholic schools in the northern half of the Archdiocese. As ambassadors, students served as hosts and guides for the event.
The Chaminade Julienne “Mission Effectiveness Orientation Materials” was published and made available on CJ’s Web site. It includes an overview of the Marianists and Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, their founders and martyrs as well as “Essentials of Catholic Identity and Mission.” This resource also contains a brief history of the school. During Catholic Schools Week, students and teachers prayed the rosary for each Catholic elementary and high school in the Greater Dayton area. The respective rosaries were then presented to each school as a gift from the CJ community. For the third consecutive year, a member of the CJ community was awarded the Spirit of Sister Dorothy Stang Award. Guidance counselor Susan Eichenauer was named one of the 10 award recipients by the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. EXCELLENT ACADEMICS This year’s graduates will be attending 54 colleges and universities including the University of Dayton, Purdue University, University of Notre Dame, and Yale University. They were awarded over $12.1 million in scholarships and contributed over 12,640 service hours during their four years at CJ. Three were recognized for their National Merit Scholarship accomplishments. Other student academic achievements include top finisher Silver Medalist Cari Meixner ’12 in the Scholastic Art and Writings Awards; four students qualified to compete at the State Science Day with three students earning an excellent rating and Pearse Scudder ’15 scoring a Superior. Eight educators from elite Russian academies met with faculty members to explore the offerings of CJ’s innovative STEMM program. The conference was made possible through collabora-
tion with Wright State University and its International Visitor Program, an initiative endorsed by the U.S. Department of State. Other visitors to CJ included internationally renowned artist, Curtis Mann ’98; Kyle Maynard, a quadruple amputee since birth who has excelled as a champion athlete, author and entrepreneur; Martin Sheen ’58, actor and social justice activist; Dr. Herbert W. Martin, University of Dayton English teacher and poet in residence; and Richard from Uganda, Invisible Children representative. The school received the Governor’s Thomas Edison Award for Excellence in STEM Education acknowledging its innovative curriculum. The Ohio Academy of Science awarded CJ a perfect rating of 10 following an external review by state businesses, government agencies and universities. CJ was officially recognized as a Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Nationally Certified School at the annual PLTW Ohio Fall Conference in early November. CJ remains the only Catholic high school and one of only 30 high schools in the nation to be dually certified in both the biomedical sciences and pre-engineering tracks. CJ PLTW students can earn college credit for their high school coursework. CJ STEMM continues to grow as 16 Dayton area professionals and educational leaders comprised this year’s roster of STEMM Idol speakers, with an additional 28 serving as high school classroom speakers, mentors or science fair judges, and 12 contributing to the K-8 outreach to other schools. Science teacher Amanda Ooten was selected by PLTW to become a Core Training Instructor for the organization’s Level 1:
Principles of Biomedical Science course and serve as a PLTW field test teacher. She will pilot a revised, updated version of the Principles of Biomedical Sciences curriculum during the 2012-13 school year. Ann Meyers ’76, math teacher, was one of five Miami Valley Catholic school teachers to be recognized for earning the designation of Master Teacher by the Ohio Department of Education. A master teacher demonstrates excellence inside and outside of the classroom through consistent leadership and focused collaboration to maximize student learning. Tony Ricciuto was selected by the Dayton Council on World Affairs to take part in a two-week immersion experience in Turkey. He joined about 30 other educators from across the United States who were chosen for this cultural study. ENRICHED COMMUNITY CJ was one of three area high schools selected to host the JCOWA 9/11 Memorial Program. It was an evening of community prayer, speakers, student reflections and slideshows commemorating the tenth anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001. Throughout the year, students shared their knowledge and love of performing arts, math, science and engineering as they lead sessions during several workshops held on CJ campus for elementary students. The varsity Quiz Bowl team finished the regular season with a perfect 11-0 record, winning the Greater Catholic Academic League Championship for the sixth consecutive season. The team qualified for the state tournament for the first time ever, finishing 7th overall. Ten visual arts and writing students were acknowledged for their award-
winning entries in the Max May Memorial Holocaust and Writing Contest which chose, “Reflections of the Holocaust: Your Thoughts on Bullying, Prejudice and Hatred” for it’s annual theme. CJ students placed best in show and finished top three in each of the two categories of art and writing. The performing arts department had an outstanding year of growth as the program presented its fall play, “The Suessification of Romeo & Juliet”, and spring musical, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat”. The Christmas Concert packed the house and an outdoor stage centerpieced all performing arts students during the Pops Concert. A second a cappella group, Age V, was formed while members of the varsity pop a cappella group, Vega, performed at the Voices in Harmony Festival at Lexington Catholic High School in Kentucky, taking home the award for best choreography by a group. CJ hosted the 4th annual Southwestern Ohio Catholic Honor Band concert on February 5. More than 65 of the top musicians from 14 high schools within the Archdiocese of Cincinnati performed for a crowd of about 300 people in the auditorium. The women’s golf team won the 2011 Division II State championship in just the program’s fifth full season of competition, a first for the women’s golf program. For the second consecutive season, the women’s track team took home the Division II/III indoor track state championship at the Ohio Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches (OATCCC) meet. The Eagles are the first team in school history to win back-to-back state championships in consecutive seasons. In all, five teams were represented in the State finals or
semi-finals: women’s golf (champs); women’s tennis (doubles); wrestling; men’s track and women’s track with one individual state winner, Cierra Brown ’12, in two events. Five teams won their respective GCL or GGCL league title: women’s golf; women’s basketball (co-champs); women’s track, men’s basketball and wrestling. The women’s crew team competed at the US Rowing Youth National Championships, finishing sixth in a field of 19. Six CJ coaches were named “Coach of the Year,” and seven student athletes were awarded “Athlete of the Year” honors. Jim Brooks, English teacher and head men’s and women’s varsity tennis coach, was selected by members of the Ohio Tennis Coaches Association (OTCA) to receive the 2012 Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity Award. Twenty student athletes, representing more than 12 percent of the class of 2012, signed or committed to play collegiate athletics across eight different sports at NCAA affiliated universities and colleges. Chaminade Julienne released the CJ Virtual Tour. This new tool offers prospective families and members of the community a unique way to learn more
about CJ from the comfort of their own home. Personalized virtual tours are available to anyone with Internet access at http://tour.cjeagles.org. CJ Eagle Summer Camp offerings grew to include baseball, lacrosse and a second session of CJ STEMM camp, and tennis camp was held on campus for the very first time. Participation in these camps incrased by over 30 percent from last year. Reunion Weekend was hosted on campus for the very first time. The weekend was packed with events for alumni who were celebrating milestone years and all alumni celebrating 50 or more years. CAMPUS CJ was presented with the 2011 Miami Valley Crime Prevention Association / Sinclair Police Department Corporate Award recognizing its commitment to campus safety. On September 15, 2011 the Eagle Tennis Center officially opened to a crowd of about 100 students, parents, alumni, faculty, staff and friends. In line with the Campus Master Plan, the CJ-owned building located on Washington Street informally known as “The Faust” was demolished. The site will eventually form a second full practice field for athletics, gym classes and community events. Campus expanded as CJ purchased the Layer Electric property at the southwest corner of Ludlow and Washington. A stained glass window preserved from the Sister’s Chapel from Julienne High School was installed in its new home at Chaminade Julienne for future generations to enjoy.

CJ IS SUCH A WELCOMING COMMUNITY, and that is evident when you first walk into the building. We instantly fell in love. The environment is totally different than any other. When we were searching for a high school that’s where our eldest, Kaitlyn ’14, wanted to be and that’s where we wanted her to be. We appreciated that there were many opportunities for Kaitlyn to experience CJ prior to us enrolling her there.
Eagle Council Rev. David A. Brant Dennis I. Meyer Key Society Robert H. Buechele Blue & Green Club
We were impressed by the types of classes that are offered. St. Christopher School had well-prepared Kaitlyn to take advanced placement and honors classes. She became involved in medical science classes and will have the opportunity to earn college credit. When we were looking at schools, we noticed the colleges CJ graduates attend, and were impressed by that, too.
Florence Kelble Beck Marilyn Sherman Hook Thomas L. Hopkins Robert A. McCarthy
The sense of community at CJ and the whole aspect of a Catholic education are very important. Kaitlyn is an Eagle Ambassador and is involved in her school, parish and community. CJ emphasizes service to others, and we’ve seen all of these strong positive influences transition in Kaitlyn.
Our daughter has grown and matured since she’s been at CJ. We look forward to the same for Brooke ‘16. Some of that maturity is a result of what’s fostered and promoted at school. Kaitlyn understands that to succeed she needs to mature at a high level. That’s what attracts families to CJ. They want to experience the school’s core values of service, mission and outreach to others, and then watch as these values take shape in the lives of their children.

Vice President of Mission Effectiveness Good Samaritan Hospital
IT’S CRITICAL FOR US TO ALWAYS LOOK TOWARD THE FUTURE Through CJ’s Project Lead the Way, students have hands-on experiences and encounter people who work in biomedical fields through an award-winning outreach program. These experiences give students insight into the fields and answers to their questions. It’s critical for us to always look toward the future and it’s important for young people to consider a career in biomedical science. The more our young people are exposed to the biomedical sciences, the more opportunities they begin to see. Students get a golden opportunity to understand the career options in biomedical science and healthcare. The more students learn related to their future careers, the better prepared they will be. The curriculum gives students a unique experience and an opportunity to excel in those fields. Healthcare is not the only opportunity, but is certainly is an important one. Both of our organizations, Good Samaritan Hospital and CJ, have a strong commitment to community, shared Catholic values and are both committed to an emphasis on careers in the healthcare field. Students can also build on the foundation CJ provides with college and medical school programs at universities right here in Dayton. In looking at the field of medical ethics, the constant growth of technology and techniques in health care have raised numerous, complex issues. CJ’s faithbased education provides a foundation and a platform for careful consideration of those ethical issues. When one thinks about it, those Catholic values also provide an invitation to share one’s talents in service of others.

MY FAMILY AND I IMMIGRATED TO THE UNITED STATES FROM YUGOSLAVIA IN 1949 after losing everything during World War II. From my earliest days, my parents instilled in me that education was the key to success. They said that no matter what material things are taken from you, the knowledge you gain stays with you forever. In their commitment to wanting this kind of success for me, they enrolled me at Chaminade. Graduating with a strong educational foundation, I went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Geology from the University of Dayton, and then a Master‘s degree from Bowling Green and a Doctorate from the University of Arizona. I learned that the ability to live out my version of “The American Dream” was made possible through my parents’ hope for my future, my education, and the result of learning the value of perseverance. I recently had the opportunity to learn that CJ continues to provide students with the kind of education that reminds me of my own experience — where science is balanced with a spiritual life. Catholic education helps students learn that it’s not difficult to accept science and be spiritual at the same time. For me, this has led to a better understanding of God’s creation of the world and how He reveals Himself in the earth’s processes and evolution. I recognize how Catholic education has shaped my life and what it can do for others. It is why I support Chaminade Julienne. The Marianists whom I encountered at Chaminade and UD gave me a feeling of self-worth and an understanding of creation. They provided the values that helped shape me as an adult. It is important to have a community of students and teachers who support you in those beliefs, and it’s what I find at CJ today.

JULIENNE WAS MUCH MORE THAN JUST A SCHOOL FOR MY FAMILY When I read that Chaminade Julienne had secured the stained glass windows from our dear old Julienne, I was flooded with memories of our beautiful building and the people who made it a special place. I feel blessed to have had the opportunity that thousands of young women shared during the 45 years that the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur spent at “Villa Julienne.” Those memories inspired me to help CJ with the restoration and installation of the first window at the exact location where the Sisters taught their first students 125 years ago — current day CJ! Julienne was much more than just a school for my family. It was a community, and the building became a second home. My mother, Evelyn Humpert ’32, was one of the first graduates that attended all four years. She believed deeply in the mission of the Sisters and joked with me that the Sisters would straighten me out — and they certainly did! They taught me responsibility, but more importantly, compassion. When my little brother died my freshman year, the Sisters and my Julienne classmates were there to help me through it. I will never forget their tremendous support. It was an experience that showed me the importance of our high school faith community. Today, I am thrilled that our family could play a role in preserving part of Julienne’s history. In honor of my parents and all parents who sacrificed to give their children an education in the tradition of Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, my hope is that the CJ community will enjoy this beautiful tie to our shared history.

While Chaminade Julienne piloted City Connects at the high school level, Our Lady of the Rosary had the opportunity to implement the model for elementary school students. Now in our fifth year, City Connects helps us identify the strengths and weaknesses of students and then create individual plans for each one. This includes directing them to resources that can help them improve as well as those that provide enrichment. It proactively addresses non-academic barriers so teachers can teach and students can learn. We have seen great improvement in our students as they move through the process year to year. We also see a direct benefit when our students go on to CJ. We help provide a seamless transition of services for them by passing along the information we have learned to our CJ City Connects counterparts. In return, we can track students’ progress through high school. We learn how well we are doing by knowing how well our students are doing. It’s a great exchange of ideas and information.
Through City Connects, students get time and attention from a group of people who are focused on them personally. They know somebody cares, and that somebody is noticing. It helps keep them on the right path. When students are successful, they feel better about themselves. When they are feeling good about themselves, they feel a part of the class. As they become more confident in their skills, they continue doing the right things. When they get positive feedback from parents and teachers — and even themselves, they learn that the sky’s the limit.

THIS SUMMER WE HELD OUR FIRST REUNION WEEKEND FOR ALUMNI CELEBRATING MILESTONE YEARS Holding the event at CJ – bringing it back home – gives alumni a chance to see how Chaminade Julienne has grown and to trigger memories of their own high school times. Reunion Weekend — provided classmates with fun ways to create even more great memories together. And, they had plenty of opportunities! Kick-off night featured “Taste of CJ” as alumni-owned businesses provided dishes of their specialties for all to enjoy. Alumni of all athletic abilities enjoyed some friendly competition at the golf outing and at the new Eagle Tennis Center, while families had lots of activities to try in the Student Conditioning Center. The Golden Eagle Luncheon brought together those who had graduated 50 or more years ago for fellowship and a delicious meal. Mass, concelebrated by two alumni, culminated all activities on campus though the celebrations continued with individual class parties at venues around Dayton. Hosting Reunion Weekend on campus reinforces the idea that a person’s high school isn’t just four years of life spent in an actual building. Students from Chaminade, Julienne, St. Joseph Commercial, or CJ built foundations for their lives together and developed friendships that, for many, continue to grow. Different classes came together as families will do to celebrate their connection to one another. You could feel the energy behind that. It reaches beyond buildings and brings to life chapters of our school’s story for all to retell, appreciate and savor.

THE NEW EAGLE TENNIS CENTER IS SUCH A BLESSING! Having the center across the street from school is so awesome for students and will really help expand our tennis program. We now have more fans coming to the matches (we could always use more!) and that means more cheers coming our way, which really boosts our confidence. The unique setting of our courts throws off our opponents. The Eagle teams are used to the trains passing and the familiar sounds of downtown. It is the same setting in which we take tests and do schoolwork — surprisingly calming to us! It completely gives us a leg up on our competition. The center also helps build team spirit because we spend more time together. We don’t have to travel to practice now, which enables our coaches to maximize practice time. Before the center opened in September, we would have to travel for home matches. We didn’t take a bus so the team wasn’t together to pump each other up. Afterwards, we drove alone. If we won, we’d celebrate alone on our way home, and even worse, if we lost, we’d have to sit in the car thinking about it. Having the courts on campus is great for morale! On behalf of all students, we thank every person who has supported the tennis program and for making the Eagle Tennis Center a reality. We thank our coaches and especially Mr. Brooks for everything he has done. You will never find a coach who cares about a team as much as he does. CJ tennis would not be where it is today if it weren’t for his dedication to student athletes and to Chaminade Julienne.

ALL THREE OF OUR CHILDREN HAVE GROWN UP IN A MUSICAL HOUSEHOLD We are both musicians and music’s been a part of our children’s lives since they were babies. Dylan ‘10, Mackenzie ‘12, and Cassidy ‘15 started singing at an early age and began playing musical instruments in middle school. Stepping into CJ’s performing arts program was a natural progression for them and has expanded their love of music. This is especially true for our daughters, who played in CJ’s band and orchestra, and performed with the a cappella groups.

This home atmosphere makes students feel comfortable and become an extended family to each other. These students spend so much time at school, not only in academics, but also music and sports, that the feeling of being comfortable is very important. It works well when your kids are spending that much time in a positive environment that instructors, students and parents all play a role in creating.
Edward G. Blair Sharon Papp Harness Suzanne Sedlock Segal Michelle Michael Sims
Challenging students motivates them. We really appreciate the fact that CJ’s program has different layers to allow students to develop and grow as their talents lead them. As musicians, it’s been very encouraging for us to see the musical arts program grow so dramatically in size and quality of production over the last five years. The bar is being raised at the same time more and more kids are being brought into a program. It’s so welcoming and inclusive, and much easier to make music when you have musicians who bond together.

the importance of friendships nurtured in an authentic community; the beauty of diversity as experienced an authentic community; and what true leadership looks like. Many of my friendships were cultivated through my involvement in athletics, but extended into classrooms and hallways where life was shared with classmates. It didn’t stop with students. Teachers, coaches, and staff members created room for developing dynamic mentor-mentee relationships. A very fragrant spirit of community permeated the school in addition to those cheering sections at athletic contests. One of the great things about CJ is its location. In a very good and healthy way, we came in contact with peers from differing backgrounds, home lives and socio-economic situations. We were all challenged and given room to grow. I not only learned a tremendous amount about them, but about myself. It ultimately taught and prepared me for life in New York City, the very epicenter of world-wide cultural expression and endless diversity! Of the countless lessons of leadership, the one that prevailed for me is the cost and responsibility of being a leader for the common good. In its truest sense, it is often at the sacrifice of the ego. Early in my athletic career I met with considerable personal success, but soon learned that I was not the greatest thing since sliced bread. It’s important to know when you aren’t the best in a particular skill, and make way for those who are. I spent my last two years as a role player with little playing time, yet I thoroughly enjoyed my responsibility of mentoring players. It was during this stretch that our teams met with even greater collective success than when I was “the man.” For me, these lessons were building blocks upon an already solid foundation established by my parents. They are the same lessons that will benefit current and future students and will well-prepare them to continue their learning in an increasingly global society.

IT’S A FAMILY EFFORT — EVERYONE CARES FOR EVERYONE ELSE As parents of a football player, you learn pretty quickly that you don’t just root for your child, you root for every player on the team because they all become yours. It’s a family effort. Everyone cares for everyone else. The boys feel wonderful and accepted when they know that everyone is supporting them. This is how it is with the school, too. Pretty early on, we learned the importance of parental involvement. It is a great way to support your child in what he or she is doing while getting to know other parents and students. You get that sense of contributing and knowing what else is going on in the school. You are part of a larger group that’s interested in what’s best for the kids. It’s CJ’s sense of family. Parents want to be a part of things and make a difference in the way that families do. You work together to achieve goals knowing that one person cannot carry the whole load. It takes all of us working together to accomplish some really great things be it the fish fry, concession, after prom, student recognition events or any other of a number of ways that we can make a difference. In return, you meet new friends who share your goals and who are committed to working to benefit our kids and the school. You develop lasting friendships with people with whom you keep in touch and socialize. Sometimes we see each other more than we do our own families!

WE DEEPLY APPRECIATE THE SUPPORT OF THOSE WHO RECOGNIZE THE NEED FOR THE KIND OF CATHOLIC EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE THAT HELPS SHAPE THE LIVES OF YOUNG ADULTS, AND SEE THE VALUE THAT THE SCHOOL’S MISSION BRINGS TO THE DAYTON COMMUNITY, AND THE GIFTS OF LEADERSHIP THAT STUDENTS CARRY OUT INTO THE WORLD.
I BELIEVE SERVICE AND MINISTRY GO HAND-IN-HAND Matthew’s Gospel sums it up so nicely: “Whatever you do for the least of my brothers, you do unto me.” My wife, Kathryn, and I believe that ministry is part of God’s work, and doing what you can for others is doing God’s work. For four years, I have helped lead a group of CJ students on a mission trip to Belize. They are encouraged to serve in ways that might be new to them, but are critical in the lives of others. Each night they reflect on why they are there and how they believe God’s mission is being accomplished through them. Their lives change. They become more appreciative for what they have and for what they can accomplish. They are amazed at how people living in poverty can be so happy and gracious. They learn that even though there are differences among cultures, we are all God’s children. By working through this process of doing and reflecting, they begin to understand that they can make a difference in our world, and that they need to make a difference.

This accountability of being Christ for each other is at the heart of the Catholic educational experience at CJ. Guided by the Marianist and Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur traditions, students learn that as those who are blessed with many gifts, they are called to serve God by serving others. The hope is that students will internalize the importance of God’s directive to help the poor, the needy, and the elderly during their formative years and continue that work throughout their lives.

VISITORS MAKE THE CLASSROOM CONTENT COME ALIVE Having Chaminade alumni come back and talk to students in our science, technology engineering, mathematics and medicine (STEMM) classes has been of great value. When we introduce these professionals as Chaminade alumni it gives our students additional motivation. The alumni are encouraged to share information that they took from Chaminade, particularly when they discuss the volunteer or faith work that they do. They also see how the seeds planted in former students bear fruit today. Students can also see that these professionals stayed in Dayton and built their careers here. Alumni visitors make the classroom content come alive in a real world context. It’s a chance for them to see and hear how professionals use concepts and calculations that they are studying. They see how professionals use the skills and concepts to solve problems and work as teams. Students can also connect with the alumni and begin to network with key professionals. The alumni also discuss how they use their talents to give back to the community and make a noticeable difference in Dayton. Students see how the mission and service that is such large part of Chaminade becomes a lifelong trait. Alumni encourage students to determine ways in which they could use their own talents to promote service. I think the students are impressed and interested to see how Chaminade formed alumni in their careers and lives. Alumni often make statements or relay some positive experience from their days at Chaminade. More often than not, those experiences resonate with the students and they begin to see how their own Chaminade experience will help form their academics career & faith

Board of Trustees
Ms. Janice Dorsey Allen ‘74
Treasurer, Trotwood Madison Schools
As a CJ parent and a member of the Board of Trustees, I hear common refrains from families who choose Chaminade Julienne: “There is an energy, a momentum, a sense of purpose.” “The sense of community is palpable.” “It feels like home.” I can say with confidence that these attributes — energy, purpose, momentum, community, home — are in dynamic abundance at CJ. With leading edge academic programming, mission-driven service, dedicated faculty and staff leadership, and, importantly, engaged students, alumni, parents and friends, the CJ experience is surging forward. Working closely with our founders and sponsors, the Marianists and the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, the Board of Trustees continues to plan, guide and provide counsel for the school’s continued success. I am pleased to report the Board’s tremendous confidence in the leadership of the school’s president, Dan Meixner, and our very capable leadership team. Chaminade Julienne has received national attention for its City Connects program, providing resources and engagement so every CJ student can successfully take advantage of all of the opportunities that prepare students for success in college. Likewise, our nationallycertified STEMM programming continues to be a leader in Catholic educational offerings. Faculty members continue to innovate and challenge our students to reach the potential God has in store for them. Their passion and commitment to Catholic education is spirit filled and inspirational. Our performing arts program has experienced a wonderful resurgence. Infectious sounds of music and laughter fill the after school hours as students flex their vocal, musical and theatrical muscles. Meanwhile, our student athletes continue to enjoy tremendous success. Women’s golf, tennis, indoor track, and track; and men’s track and wrestling were represented in State finals or semi-finals resulting in team championships for women’s golf and indoor track, and two individual championships in women’s track. League titles were claimed in women’s golf, basketball and track, and men’s basketball and wrestling, while women’s crew placed sixth in nationals. Commitment to service continues to be a defining CJ hallmark. Our students and faculty, and, indeed, our parents and alumni, are known for wide-ranging service in our Dayton community and beyond. CJ‘s outreach finds our students working with struggling families in inner city Cincinnati, the rural poor in southern Indiana, the impoverished but hopeful in Detroit, and the remote poor in Belize. Back at home, we continue to expand and refresh our campus and facilities. In the last year, CJ opened the six court Eagle Tennis Center on campus and purchased the long-abandoned Layer Electric building extending our southern border. The demolition of the Perry Street warehouse provides opportunity for the eventual expansion of Blue Green Field, adjacent to our stunning new Student Conditioning Center on our northern perimeter. Now, more of our students experience their athletic and extracurricular endeavors on our 16 acre campus rather than at satellite location.

Indeed, the stage is set for exciting near-term developments inside our academic buildings as well, with advanced planning underway for a best-in-class STEMM facility, enhanced learning spaces, further technology upgrades, revitalized performing arts and auditorium space, and the revitalization and re purposing of facilities. Effective stewardship of resources, strategic planning, efficient financial management and spreading our good news to Catholic and faith-filled families throughout the Miami Valley assures our continuing commitment of energy, purpose and momentum to our community and home. I hope many of you will visit campus this year at one of the many celebrations open to the entire community. Or, perhaps you would prefer to arrange to visit during one of our bustling school days. You can feel for yourself the energy, purpose, momentum and community that words fail to fully describe. It is the home and foundation that you have helped build and fortify for this and future generations. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I thank all of you, the thousands of CJ supporters recognized in this Annual Report. Your embrace of our students and faculty and staff are invaluable as you help strengthen the mission of our school through them. Each and every member of our community adds to the depth and richness of our tradition which we all should be very proud to claim as our own. May God bless you and may the CJ spirit continue to enrich your life.
