out Design Workshop by one point to be offered the planning contract by the city.

“I’ve done a number of park master plans … and this is the closest I’ve seen it,” Souza said.

Fourteen companies responded to a request for proposals (RFP) that the city posted in October, and staff interviewed the top three.

Souza said he was pleased about the response to the RFP. “That says a lot about our community – to have firms that work at the level they do to be interested in working with the community.”

City staff members graded the interviewees based on their understanding of the project and their creative approach and public engagement. Staff members also evaluated professional qualifications, answers to committee questions, quality of the presentations and other projects the firms completed.

Ohio-based MKSK developed a strategic plan in 2010 for downtown Columbus that will revitalize the area over a 10-year period. The plan includes park development as well as a “creative campus and mixed-use and residential district centered on museums, and educational and cultural anchors, and public realm improvements of the downtown’s signature thoroughfares,” according to the company’s website. The Columbus City Council unanimously approved that plan.

The city of Greenville will now enter into negotiations with MKSK to work out a final cost for the consultation services.

Souza said if the negotiations fail, the city would offer the contract to the nexthighest point-getter.

Once the contract is signed, the firm will have a planning period of six months to create a design scheme for how to develop about 350 acres on the city’s West End, a portion of which will be occupied by the proposed park.

Creation of a master plan does not guarantee that a park on the West End will become a reality, city officials say.

If development does move forward, Mayor Knox White said funds from the city’s hospitality tax would most likely pay for preparing the initial groundwork, and the city would then enter into publicprivate partnerships to develop amenities such as an amphitheater, playground, bridges and specialty gardens.

He said the consultant will offer “fresh eyes” on how to incorporate the Reedy River in the park plans and create more green space in the city.

“It should be a very inspiring and exciting process, and there are a lot of people involved,” White said.

Good health for the hungry IN MY OWN WORDS

Have you given your New Year’s resolution any thought yet? Soon enough, we will be inundated with ads for weight-loss products, health club memberships, home remedies, diets and other products to encourage a healthier you.

With countless options here in Greenville for living healthy and eating healthy foods, we can overlook those people in Greenville County who cannot necessarily live healthier lifestyles. Food insecurity may be partly to blame.

Food insecurity means people don’t know where they will get their next meal, much less be able to make a healthy choice for that meal. A recent study by the Food Research and Action Center found a direct correlation between food insecurity, obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. This research indicates a coexistence of food insecurity and obesity in particular, when both economic and social disadvantage are factors.

Those at highest risk are women who are food insecure, as they often forfeit meals to ensure their children are nourished. People who are food insecure often chose to skip meals to make the most out of their food budget, and subsequently may overeat when they

do acquire food. Prolonged patterns of eating deprivation and then overeating can lead to metabolic changes that promote fat storage.

Who cares? You should. The estimated cost of hunger to our nation is at least $167.5 billion.

Contributing factors include avoidable health care costs, lost productivity, more expensive public education due to poor education outcomes, and the cost to charities to feed people. We all benefit economically from a population that is adequately fed and healthier.

Loaves & Fishes rescued 1.8 million pounds of food in 2014. We project 1.9 million by the end of 2015. We rescue dairy, meats, produce, baked goods and prepared foods. We wondered if what we are delivering is impacting hunger.

With assistance from our Furman intern, Mariah, we surveyed 13 of our agency partners and posed the question to their clients, “How can we better serve you?” While we did not explore individual health issues, food pantry clients shared stories of diabetes, obesity and other health-related problems during our visits. They understood the links of their unhealthy diet to these issues, but frankly, did not have many other options. Food costs were cited as the main reason for purchasing fewer

healthy foods than they would like.

While most clients were thankful for the items they received, 96 percent were open to receiving more produce, items that were available less often.

Greenville can make an impact on food insecurity and we need to work together to do so. Community gardens, restaurants, schools, hospitals, colleges and corporations have the potential to contribute regularly to the more effective rescue of highly nutritional food. The food benefits those who receive it, but also it’s good business acumen to donate.

Numerous shelters, soup kitchens

and pantries feed the hungry; those who are the least amongst us. They do incredible work. Our food recovery system is complicated. It will take innovation and collaboration to broaden our community’s ability to rescue more highly nutritional food, so our neighbors who are food insecure can eat healthier foods that can improve their diets, potentially their health and that of all in our community.

Top tips for choosing safe toys IN MY OWN WORDS

If you’re like me, you may be left puzzled as to what gifts to buy the special children in your life this holiday season. Naturally, I try to purchase the coolest toys I can find, like a 100-piece

princess jigsaw puzzle I know my 2-yearold niece would absolutely adore.

However, I decided against that toy after I checked the toy manufacturer’s intended age range and realized my niece is too young for the puzzle. What if one of those pieces ended up in her mouth and put her at risk for injury?

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), roughly 251,000 toy-related injuries

took place in 2014. We can prevent such injuries, alleviate our worries and still be the coolest grown-ups around by remembering these tips when shopping for toys: Read the label. Warning labels give important information about how to use a toy and what ages the toy is safe for. Be sure to show your child how to use the toy the right way.

Think LARGE. Make sure all toys and parts are bigger than your child’s mouth to prevent choking.

Look for stuffed toys that are well made. Make sure all the parts are on tight and seams and edges are secure. Take off any loose ribbons or strings to avoid strangulation. Avoid toys that have small bean-like pellets or stuffing that can cause choking or suffocation if swallowed.

Buy plastic toys that are sturdy.

Toys made from thin plastic may break easily.

Avoid toxic materials that could cause poisoning. Make sure the label says “nontoxic.”

Avoid hobby kits and chemistry sets for children younger than 12. They can cause fires or explosions and may contain dangerous chemicals. Make sure your older child knows how to safely handle these kinds of toys and use them only under adult supervision.

Remember that toys are for outside of the crib. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that infants sleep alone on their backs in a bare crib, without pillows, blankets, toys, siblings or pets.

Beware of batteries and magnets.

Powerful small magnets and the acid from button batteries in many toys can be fatal if swallowed.

Don’t forget the helmet. Kids always need helmets for riding toys like that shiny new bicycle, scooter or fourwheeler.

Remain up-to-date on product recall announcements by signing up at cpsc. gov or safekids.org/product-recalls.

Remind children to clean up after playtime. Safely organizing toys can prevent accidents such as tripping or falling.

Examine toys routinely for safety hazards, pointed edges and broken pieces.

Most important, after finding that perfect gift, remember to keep up with toy safety at home. Stay attentive by incorporating safe practices at playtime.

For those who aren’t looking to join the rush to Greenville’s urban core, a comparison of the 2010-2014 American Community Survey and the survey from five years prior also shows that residential growth is continuing farther east and south in hot spots such as Greer, Mauldin and Simpsonville.

to 1,020. The growth in that tract is expected to continue, with several apartment and condonium projects under construction or planned.

North Main Street is also a hot spot with a 29.2 percent growth in estimated population.

GROWTH MOVES OUT

Greenville County residents are a bit older, a bit more educated and increasingly not from around here, according to the latest Census Bureau information.

Residents who find the downtown rents too high are looking at neighborhoods that are outside of downtown’s reaches but still close enough to take advantage of downtown’s allures.

A couple of Greenville’s old mill villages – Dunean, located near Mills Avenue to Anderson Street, and Woodside, near the Village of West Greenville – are some of Greenville County’s fastest-growing residential areas. Dunean’s estimated population grew more than 15 percent, while Woodside’s population increased by an estimated 28.6 percent. Young urban professionals have fueled some of that growth.

INTERSTATES DRIVE GROWTH Outside of downtown and the neighborhoods that surround it, Greenville County is growing farther east and south.

One census tract between Taylors and Greer grew more than 30 percent, while another in the Sandy Flat Road area between Greer and Travelers Rest grew by nearly 30 percent in those five years.

Other high-growth areas included a strip of land in the Simpsonville area from I-385 to S.C. 14 to S.C. 417 to I-185 and the area bordered by Old Spartanburg Road, South Batesville Road and the Enoree River. Hammett Bridge Road dissects the census tract, which includes Riverside High.

In addition, an area bounded by Woodruff Road to S.C. 14 and I-85 was also a quickly growing area.

Census tracts near Gantt and the South Carolina Technology and Aviation Center (the former Donaldson Center); the White Horse Road area near U.S. 123 and S.C. 124, City View and Paris Mountain State Park also showed population growth of 15 percent or more.

A comparison of the 2005-2009 and the 2010-2014 American Community Survey five-year estimates shows the median age of Greenville County residents has increased slightly and the percentage of those 65 and older has gone up.

A greater percentage of Greenville County residents have earned a bachelor’s degree or higher and a smaller percentage don’t have at least a high school diploma (18.8 percent in 2005-2009 vs. 16.3 percent in 20102014.

A growing percentage of Greenville County residents weren’t born here.

In the latest American Community Survey, 38 percent of Greenville County residents were born in a state other than South Carolina.

Of the estimated 158,038 residents who were born in other states, 76,826 came from other Southern states. The Northeast was next, then the Midwest and, finally, the west.

In the 2005-2009 American Community Survey, 36.7 percent of people who lived in Greenville County were born outside of South Carolina. In the 2000 Census, 30 percent of Greenville County residents were born in another state.

Other areas showing estimated population losses of 15 percent or more include a tract that includes the Pettigru Historic District, an area near the Greenville Amtrak station and Welcome.

bjeffers@communityjournals.com Consultants have proposed creating a $5.3 million exhibit for the Confederate flag at the S.C. Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum.

Representatives from two consultant companies, Watson Tate Savory Architects Inc. and British company Haley Sharpe Design, also proposed an additional $416,000 annually for operational costs and renting space for the display.

The exhibit would be in a room directly above the Relic Room.

The consultants presented initial details of the plan to a commission that legislators appointed when they voted to remove the Confederate flag from the Statehouse grounds, weeks after a shooter killed nine people at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston.

The nylon flag that was removed from the Statehouse grounds is being stored in a climate-controlled room in the museum that also stores other Confederate flags.

The commission’s purpose is to recommend how to display the flag in the museum. They must present a proposal for the exhibit to the General Assembly by Jan. 1.

The exhibit could also display Civil War memorabilia currently in storage and an educational area. Monumental decisions Bill would allow more freedom in changing historic monuments and memorials BENJAMIN JEFFERS | STAFF

bjeffers@communityjournals.com A bill prefiled by Sen. Darrell Jackson (D-Richland) would allow cities, counties, school districts and state colleges and universities to remove or change the names of buildings, monuments, streets and public areas.

Bill S. 909 comes after a turbulent end of session where legislators voted to remove the Confederate Battle Flag from Statehouse grounds. That move sparked debate around the state regarding whether to rename or remove monuments and buildings named after known racists or that recall moments of racism in the state’s past.

The Heritage Act, which Jackson helped draft in 2000, removed the Confederate flag from the Statehouse dome

and placed it at a monument in front of the statehouse.

That law requires a two-thirds vote by legislators to remove or change the names of monuments and memorials maintained by state-controlled entities.

Early this year, protestors at Clemson University called for the school to change the name of Tillman Hall, which is named after former state Governor and U.S. Sen. Benjamin Tillman, who was renowned for his white supremacist views.

A Greenwood American Legion tried to change a soldiers’ monument this year and leaders at the Citadel voted to move the Confederate Naval Jack from the oncampus chapel to another location.

“I would say to my colleagues who think it’s a slippery slope, ‘What if the federal government did that to us?’”

Jackson said, according to WJBF-TV in Augusta. “What if the federal government said to the state of South Carolina, ‘You can’t change the name of your streets. You can’t change the names that are on your buildings. You can’t do anything unless you get federal approval’?”

Clemson’s energetic football coach Dabo Swinney has repeatedly displayed his natural leadership ability and penchant for creativity during this historic season. Sunday, he personally treated a large crowd of excited fans to the epic pizza party he promised if the Tigers reached the College Football Playoff – and to witness his undefeated ACC championship team’s announcement as the No. 1 seed for the Bowl Championship Series that will kick off the three-game conclusion of the 2015 season on New Year’s Eve. “If you do the common things in an uncommon way,” Swinney told the crowd, “you will command the attention of the world.” His luncheon invitation was part of a long-held promise to “celebrate this special team and what Clemson University stands for; what it’s all about.”

Still electrified after an exciting win against North Carolina, many in the crowd of roughly 30,000 were travel-weary, having ventured to Charlotte Saturday night and returned home in the wee hours Sunday, only to head westward to Clemson after a few winks of sleep.

Sunday is already one of the stores’ busiest days of the week, Knapp said, and getting all the team members in the stores five to six hours earlier than a normal shift was a challenge.

The other big challenge was delivering 3,000 pizzas to the stadium in a one-hour window while still having a hot and fresh product, he said. Of the 3,000 pizzas, 60 percent were pepperoni and 40 percent were cheese.

“The pizza was kind of an excuse to get 30,000 people together and celebrate the success that Clemson has had this season,” he said.

Which Muschamp did USC get as head football coach?

How will new head football coach Will Muschamp perform at the University of South Carolina? It depends on which Will Muschamp we’re talking about.

DEFENSE Are we talking about the defensive wizard whose tough, take-no-prisoners style helped Nick Saban and LSU win a national title in 2003? The Gamecocks could certainly use him. Their defensive stats last season were pathetic: 96th in total defense, 110th in rushing defense (witness their inability to stop the run in their loss to The Citadel) and 59th in Red Zone defense.

In the four years Muschamp was head coach at Florida, the Gators never ranked lower than 15th in the defense column.

And his influence is still being felt even though he was let go last season; they’re sixth in total defense for the 2015 season and eighth in scoring defense, always a strong category for a Muschamp-coached team.

Unless we’re talking about the Will Muschamp who was the defensive coordinator at Auburn this past season, because this was a terrible year for that guy; the War Eagles never climbed higher than 90th in total defense.

TEMPERAMENT By and large, Muschamp seems to be beloved by many who have played for and worked for him. He’s respected for his incredibly intense approach to the game of college football, and no less a hard case than Nick Saban called Muschamp one of the best assistants he’s ever had. That 100 percent-all-the-time approach is no doubt what’s given him a reputation as one of the best recruiters in the country, and during his introductory press conference, Muschamp indicated he was starting on that path immediately.

A personality as fiery as his is what’s going to lure potential recruits away from schools like Clemson.

Unless we’re talking about the kind of fiery that tends to get Muschamp in trouble on the field. His last game with Auburn was highlighted, if you want to call it that, by Muschamp having to be physically restrained while yelling at a referee and drawing a 15-yard personal

foul that helped push Alabama into fieldgoal range, which they promptly took advantage of.

EXPERIENCE A PLUS USC’s Athletic Director Ray Tanner said near the beginning of the school’s head coach search that he wanted someone younger, which is understandable.

USC’s last two head coaches, Lou Holtz and Steve Spurrier, weren’t men so much as larger-than-life legends, and they brought a great deal of skill, trophies and media attention with them to Columbia.

But they were also entering the final stages of their careers, which inevitably hurts recruiting eventually. Tanner wanted to solve that problem with a fresher face that still commanded respect and, most crucially, had head coaching experience. As far as those criteria go, Muschamp seems like a good fit.

Until you take a closer look at his time as a head coach and realize that Muschamp didn’t seem to be that good at it.

His record at Florida was 28-21, with 11 of those wins coming in one season, which is impressive in one way and concerning in another.

TIME WILL TELL Ultimately, whichever Will Muschamp the Gamecocks get, it’s going to take time to figure out what we’ve got here. It’ll be a few years before Muschamp can get his recruits in place, especially given the late start he’s getting this year. This is a talented coach and he’s getting the opportunity to rebuild a team from the ground up, his way.

The only question is if his way will work.

New conceptual plans for the now-cancelled Reedy Point tourism complex downtown were released in March 2015.

sjackson@communityjournals.com After several unsuccessful attempts to secure a lead sponsor and lackluster fundraising results, Reedy Point, a proposed public tourism resource center and gathering place concept in downtown Greenville, has been canceled.

Plans were designed in 2010 for the multipurpose tourism complex, which was to border the Reedy River at the entrance to the Swamp Rabbit Trail and include an interactive visitor center, business and meeting spaces, event venue, pocket parks and public spaces. Public and private city leaders had been discussing the concept ever since, and the project went through several iterations under the names of Reedy Square and Dream Big Greenville.

So what went wrong?

“Reedy Point had a challenge from the beginning because of economics,” said Chris Stone, president of VisitGreenvilleSC. “These kind of projects have proven to take time, and this project tried to get up and going during the recession.

It never gathered the momentum needed to get off the finish line.”

Initially the project had a budget of $23.7 million, with funds to come from both public and private sources, Patti McAbee, president and CEO for Reedy Point, previously told the Greenville Journal. The project was spearheaded by a team of community leaders that included lawyer Tommy Wyche, businessman Stewart Spinks and economic developer Ben Haskew, who launched a $10 million private fundraising campaign. The complex was projected to attract more than

165,000 visitors a year and generate $14 million in associated revenues.

The city of Greenville also got on board.

In 2010, it adopted a resolution stating the city would provide up to $3.5 million of financial support for the project once it attained 85 percent of the overall fund raising goal. The funds were to come from local accommodation tax fees.

Greenville County Council threw its hat in the ring as well, setting aside $5 million for the project, which included schematic designs and a 1.2-acre parcel of land on River Street.

Now, the $2.7 million parcel will revert back to Greenville County ownership.

The county has no immediate plans for the land, said spokesman Bob Mihalic.

Stone says that even though the project is “a no for today and tomorrow, it doesn’t mean it’s a no for next week or next year. The idea will resurface.” Tourism in Greenville wasn’t at the forefront of people’s minds then like it is today, he said, and a place to “serve as a showcase and display our assets is an opportunity to come.”

A letter from the Reedy Point board of directors urged proponents of the project to “continue to advocate for the site to be used as public green space, as a connection point, as a place that welcomes everyone in an area surrounded by enormous private development.”

“It’ll all come into play again. It’s just not working today,” Stone said. “People will see the wisdom in the project.”

However, they are living with tube feeding or technological help such as ventilators, oxygen, special wheelchairs or CPAP machines, said Dr. Kent Jones of Greenville Health System’s Children’s Hospital.

To support these children and their families, neonatal physician Dr. Jerry Ferlauto and his wife, Natalina, announced this week a $1 million endowment for a complex care center. Ferlauto said as he worked outside the hospital’s neonatal

intensive care unit (NICU), he realized the need for continued supportive care for these children.

In addition to medical care, The Ferlauto Center for Complex Pediatric Care will help with social services, nutrition and care coordination. Jones, medical director for the center, said Ferlauto’s gift will help families who cope with a child’s care on top of additional medical expenses.

“These families are under tremendous stress,” he said, noting in the current age of two-income families, one parent often quits work to become a caregiver and income plummets. Children often need medical equipment and home nursing services, he added.

“It’s overwhelming the number of different entities, agencies, specialists and therapists they have to deal with,” he said.

The center will help coordinate multiple appointments in a centralized location if possible, he said. “What we do is see them frequently, stay up to date on where they are and try to help them with as many details as we can,” Jones said.

Ferlauto emphasized his passion for care for children with complex conditions, relaying a story about his time working with the Free Medical Clinic.

He said he encountered a girl who ran out of her asthma medication. When he asked how she addressed her symptoms without her medication, she responded that she would go into the bathroom and breathe the cold air coming in through the hole in the roof.

“Our hope for the center of complex care is to provide multidisciplinary, centralized care for these technology-dependent, complex children without regard to social economic status, nor to financial barriers,” Ferlauto said.

Judith Gravley attended the announcement with her 14-year-old son, Alan, who was a patient of Dr. Kent Jones before he moved into complex pediatric care.

Alan Gravley was born 10 weeks early, spent eight months in the hospital and arrived home with a feeding tube, ventilator and oxygen, said Judith Gravley. “He came off the ventilator when he was 2 and off the oxygen when he was 5,” she said.

“I think it’s wonderful – anything that is going to support the NICU families and children with complicated medical issues will be a great benefit to the hospital system,” said Gravley. “We had a lot of care and a lot of help when we were here … any program like this will be much appreciated.”

The event is expected to bring more than 900 athletes to the Upstate along with staff, family, friends, sponsors and spectators. Greenville won the bid to host this event due to the area’s desirable location, community support, and great partnerships at the city, county, university and local levels according to a press release.

“We are very pleased to bring together Notus Sports, VisitGreenvilleSC, Greenville County Parks, Recreation & Tourism (GCPRT) and Furman University for this event, and we look forward to making these two championships the best yet,” said Gary Cherrett, manager of Notus Sports, a private, nonprofit organization created to attract, create and manage high-profile sporting events in the Upstate.

The duathlon event will be put on by the governing body of USA Triathlon (a member federation of the U.S. Olympic Committee) and is composed of running and biking. The National

Championships format will be the standard for a duathlon: a run, bike, run combination. This means athletes will begin with a run, transition to cycling, and then transition back to running again.

Two race distances will be used for the event — a standard 4.6K run, 31.2K bike and 4.4K run, as well as a 2.9K run, 20.8K bike, 2.7K run for the sprint.

The course route will begin at Furman University and go through the foothills.

“This is an exciting first for Greenville and this championship plays a vital role in impacting the Greenville community, from an economic perspective to both incoming visitors and residents,” said Chris Stone, president of VisitGreenvilleSC. “We appreciate USA Triathlon’s trust in Greenville and look forward to welcoming duathlon enthusiasts from all over the country in just three short years.”

bjeffers@communityjournals.com Presidential candidate U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) on Monday went after President Barack Obama for calling for tighter gun restrictions in the wake of last week’s terrorist attack in San Bernardino, Calif.

“You don’t stop the bad guys by taking away our guns,” Cruz said. “You stop the bad guys by using our guns.”

Cruz made his remarks at a presidential town hall meeting hosted by U.S. Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) at Furman University.

“Now wait a second, this happened in California, which has among the strictest gun control laws in the country,” Cruz said. Instead of tighter restrictions on purchasing guns to limit terrorism, Cruz advocated for tighter controls on accepting foreign refugees.

“I think Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton’s plan to bring tens of thousands of Syrian Muslim refugees to the United States of America is absolute lunacy,” he said. Cruz said the refugees should be resettled in the Middle East.

Last week Cruz launched a Second Amendment coalition made up of people pushing for the continued right to bear arms for self-defense.

State legislation could affect licenses, gas taxes in city BENJAMIN JEFFERS | STAFF

bjeffers@communityjournals.com Greenville City Council heard updates from lobbyists who work with the city about state legislation involving business license tax reform, infrastructure finance and a state budget proviso that stops funding for municipal courts.

Council is also hoping to get legislation to allow the city to ask voters to impose a capital project sales tax on themselves for projects in the city.

BUSINESS LICENSES Miriam Hair, executive director of the Municipal Association of South Carolina (MUSC), said that bill H. 3490, which is awaiting a subcommittee hearing in the House Ways and Means committee, would standardize business licenses across the state.

Each city would have the same type of application and the due dates would be the same.

“So if you have a business that is doing business in several different cities, they don’t have to figure four different forms for Hair four different cities,” Hair said.

The MUSC board also is setting up a business license portal online that all cities would participate in where e-commerce businesses can pay business license renewals and submit gross revenue for each city.

INFRASTRUCTURE FINANCE Bill H. 3579 passed the House last year and sits in special order status in the Senate, which means it will be one of the first bills taken up when session starts.

H. 3579 would decrease the gas tax by 6 cents while raising the tax on the wholesale level. The measure would cost drivers an estimated 10 cents more per gallon at the pump. The bill also raises the vehicle sales tax cap from $300 to $500 and includes an income tax reduction that would save taxpayers about $48 per year.

The bill is expected to go through changes in the Senate.

MUNICIPAL COURTS A proviso in the state budget bars the state from allocating funds to compensate for appointed counsel in municipal courts. If a municipality chooses to have a municipal court system, it must provide the funds for a public defender.

Ted Riley of Riley Pope and & Laney said the firm is working with legislators to remove the proviso.

PROJECT SALES TAX City Council members are a looking for a legislator to work with to introduce a bill that would allow municipalities to ask voters to impose a capital project sales tax within the city limits to pay for projects such as roads and sewers.

Counties have that power, and Greenville County Council used that ability last year with the failed referendum to increase the sales tax by 1 cent to pay for road improvements.

Cities do not have that power, but the City of Greenville has been asking for it for 10 to 15 years, said Julie Horton, the city’s governmental relations manager.

She said city residents were more favorable to the failed referendum than the rest of county residents, according to the votes.

Greenville County Council marked its last meeting of the year with multiple economic development deals and debate over how to distribute additional hospitality tax funds.

HOSPITALITY TAX DISTRIBUTION Council members spent a good portion of Tuesday night’s meeting debating whether to approve suggested distribution for additional hospitality (or accommodations) tax to applicants. An additional $64,183 was available for distribution, and councilor Joe Dill objected to more funds going to entities located in the City of Greenville, which he noted also has a hospitality tax of its own. Dill suggested moving funds from the additional $12,500 Artisphere allocation to give $2,000 to the Travelers Rest Historical Society and $2,183 to the Travelers Rest Farmers Market.

Council members H.G. “Butch” Kirven and Liz Seman objected to council changing recommendations solicited from a committee charged with allocating the funds.

Kirven objected to Dill removing funds only from Artisphere’s allocation. Events or organizations must bring in hotel room nights, said Jim Burns, who added he also supported the committee.

Councilwoman Lottie Gibson said she supported the committee recommendations and many minority-focused events do not get funding, yet bring in tourism dollars.

The group struck a compromise by taking a portion from Artisphere and Metropolitan Arts Council’s allocations for the Travelers Rest requests. The amendment passed in a 9-3 vote with Liz Seman, Sid Cates and Xanthene Norris voting against.

The amended allocation passed 11-1 with Cates voting against.

Seman said she wanted to “reiterate her disdain” for council reallocating the funds recommended by the committee. Norris added the council “is being subjective rather than objective.”

USED TIRE ORDINANCE MOVES FORWARD Council gave second-reading approval to a used tire ordinance that will regulate businesses that sell used tires in the unincorporated areas of the county. The amended version does not require businesses to store used tires in buildings that must have a sprinkler system, but does require screening for businesses on more than one acre.

Councilman Willis Meadows said the requirements mirror those for junkyards in the county. Third reading is scheduled for the next meeting and council approved amendments at third reading.

FAMILY SUBDIVISIONS Council gave final approval to a change to the land development regulations that allows an exemption from the summary plat requirements for conveying land to immediate family members. This revision allows families to divide land for a child, stepchild, spouse, sibling, aunt, uncle, niece, nephew, grandchild, grandparent or parent of the owner, according to the ordinance, with a signature from the assistant county administrator of community planning development and public works or representative without obtaining preliminary approval first. THE NEWS IN BRIEF ANTHONY TO RETIRE AS MEYER CENTER DIRECTOR Louise Anthony, executive director for the Meyer Center for Special Children for 31 years, announced she will retire in June.

Anthony began serving as executive director in 1995 and began her tenure with the center as a part-time receptionist in 1984. The Meyer Center’s student population grew from 21 to 180 during Anthony’s tenure. Anthony helped helm a capital campaign that allowed the center to purchase its current building and expand to serve more students.

Anthony also led the center in becoming a member of the Greenville County charter school system and accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).

The Meyer Center for Special Children was founded by Dr. Leslie Meyer to provide early childhood education for children with disabilities along with speech, physical and occupational therapy.

“Dr. Meyer was my hero and I am so honored to have carried on his legacy,” said Anthony in a release. She will serve as executive director until June 30, 2016.

LEADERSHIP AWARDS GIVEN Three politicians who played key roles in the Emanuel Nine events in Charleston will receive awards for leadership from Furman University’s Riley Institute.

The late Rev. and state Sen. Clementa Pinckney, who was one of the nine people killed in the shootings that took place at the church in June, is this year’s recipient of the David H. Wilkins Award Riley Haley for Excellence in Legislative Leadership.

His widow, Jennifer, will accept the award. Pinckney served in the state legislature from the age of 23 until his death.

Gov. Nikki Haley and Charleston Mayor Joe Riley will receive the Wilkins Award for Excellence in Civic Leadership.

The pair will speak during the awards ceremony in Columbia on Jan. 12 about their collaboration as they worked together during the crisis.

Pinckney’s life was characterized by humility, intelligence and a commitment to those citizens left out of the economic mainstream in South Carolina, said Don Gordon, executive director of the Riley Institute, in a release. Haley and Riley Pinckney are being honored after they demonstrated critical leadership during the days and weeks following the shootings, Gordon said.

The awards are named after Greenville’s David Wilkins, who served as speaker of the S.C. House of Representatives and as U.S. Ambassador to Canada. Former U.S. Secretary of Education and former South Carolina Governor Dick Riley and Furman University President Elizabeth Davis will co-host the event.

CLEMSON JOINS ALAN ALDA CENTER Six-time Emmy Award-winner Alan Alda is best known as an actor. But he is a longtime advocate for science education.

Clemson University has become one of 10 universities in the country – and the only one in the Southeast – to be affiliated with the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science, according to a news release.

The affiliation signals Clemson’s commitment to communicating its research and gives faculty access to the Alda Center’s training programs, which range from seminars to accredited classes given in conjunction with Stony Brook’s School of Journalism.

Alda Alda has led workshops at the center that use improvisational theater games to help scientists communicate more directly and personally.

“Communicating science with clarity can only help scientists make their work better understood by voters, by policymakers, by funders; even by researchers in other disciplines, not to mention by the scientists’ own grandmothers,” Alda said in a video on the center’s website.

that mimics Hell Week for Navy SEAL trainees.

The petite 64-year-old, who wears a big smile and carries a burning desire to never quit, went through mental and physical tests such as log training, fullimmersion in ice water, surf torture and a 20-mile trek up Mount Palomar in Southern California with a weighted pack, called a “ruck.”

Hardwick said for her, the challenge was 60 percent mental and 40 percent physical.

LIFETIME COMMITMENT The program is called Kokoro and was founded by retired SEAL Commander Mark Divine for Spec Ops candidates preparing for training. Kokoro now serves more than three times as many professionals as military members, according to Divine.

Hardwick, who started training specifically for Kokoro in March, said she’s been dedicated to fitness and a

COMMUNITY | 12.11.2015 | GREENVILLE JOURNAL | 23 After the ruck, Hardwick said the participants were allowed no rest, but went straight into a 1-mile run followed by 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 squats and then another 1-mile run.

On the last night of training, participants repeatedly ran up and down the beach carrying their “will to live”—which was a rock—and also sat in the surf with linked arms as the waves crashed over them.

IN DEEP Hardwick said she never wanted to quit during Kokoro, but at times did fear she would be unable to complete the tasks.

One of those times came during “pool,” where participants had to repeatedly complete exercises in and out of the water. Hardwick said she isn’t a good swimmer and struggled with the task.

“I was like ‘I’m probably going to drown right here,’” she said.

Another time came at the end of the training, when she had to hold her head underwater in a tub of ice water. She said her head started lifting out of the water, so one of the coaches came by and shoved her face to the bottom.

During those times, she said, she controlled her mental focus and breathing to get through the challenge.

Hardwick said her reason for doing Kokoro was twofold: she wanted to honor her three brothers who served in the military, one of whom died in Vietnam.

She also wanted to prove to herself and others that if you believe in yourself and take care of yourself, you can do anything regardless of age, she said.

Twenty-four of the 31 participants in Hardwick’s group finished the training and were secured.

“Secured means you are done,” she said. “The coaches can’t cuss you anymore, they can’t do anything to you, they can’t yell at you anymore. You are done.”

Last year, she retired from her sales job at ScanSource and became a full-time fitness instructor at Alliance Champions Training Center.

The gym’s owner and head coach, Billy Fletcher, completed Kokoro himself, and helped prepare Hardwick and her teammates for the challenge.

One of her first challenges on arrival at Kokoro was the 20-mile ruck up Mount Palomar. Hardwick said she could feel her feet getting major blisters, but kept quiet about them because she didn’t want the coaches to make her stop.

clandrum@communityjournals.com A visit Fred Baus and his grandsons made to the Roper Mountain Holiday Lights inspired a children’s book, “Oh, Those Holiday Lights!”

This year, Roper the Ogre, the star of the book, will make weekend appearances in Roper Mountain’s Winter Wonderland.

The book was released last year and has entered its second printing. Proceeds from book sales will go to Greenville Rotary Charities and the Greenville County Schools’ Roper Mountain Science Center.

“Oh, Those Holiday Lights!” is set in the 19th century when Christmas lights were candles, not electric bulbs. An ogre named Roper didn’t know how to interact with people in the village, so he scared

children and adults alike.

Roper saw that the Christmas lights brought joy to the townspeople, so he decided to steal them and take away their joy. He hid them in his cave in the mountain. The adults looked and looked for the Christmas lights but they couldn’t find them.

The children, knowing that Christmas is the season of caring and sharing, decided to look

for the candles themselves.

Each of them decided to bring the ogre one of the gifts they had received for Christmas in hopes that their sharing would prompt Roper to give back the candles. After he sees the gifts, the ogre put the Christmas candles out on the mountain and re-lit them. The Christmas lights have been on the mountain ever since.

Safe Kids Upstate celebrates 20 years, honors Journal APRIL A. MORRIS | STAFF

amorris@communityjournals.com Safe Kids Upstate, a coalition devoted to preventing accidental injury and death in children, celebrated two decades with a gala and visit from Safe Kids Worldwide president and CEO Kate Carr.

The nonprofit honored the Greenville Journal with the Media Award for keeping safety in the forefront of the community According to Safe Kids Upstate, which is affiliated with Children’s Hospital of Greenville Health System (GHS), childhood deaths from unintentional injuries have dropped 43 percent and unintentional injuries have dropped 22 percent.

The organization has sponsored efforts in Greenville, Oconee and Pickens counties ranging from life jacket loaner boards on Oconee County lakes and car seat inspection stations to safe sleep education and bike helmet distribution.

Carr said the Safe Kids Upstate coalition was touted as an example because of its community partners, physician support and knowledgeable staff.

Safe Kids Upstate has fitted more than 24,500 bike helmets, distributed more than 2,000 portable cribs and checked more than 15,000 child car seats to date.

“The ideal way to treat childhood injuries and fatalities is to prevent them from occurring in the first place,” said Dr. William Schmidt III, medical director of Children’s Hospital, in a statement. “That is exactly what Safe Kids Upstate has done.”

5 moments that made Clemson’s 2015 season FOR 24 YEARS

A TRADITION OF HOLIDAY WONDER.

As Clemson stood on the field at Bank of America stadium Saturday night, enjoying their first ACC Championship since 2011 and perhaps thinking about their national championship playoff game against Oklahoma on Dec. 31, only one thing was going through my mind: “What the hell was the punter, Andy Teasdall, thinking trying to run the ball on fourth-and-forever instead of just, y’know, KICKING THE BALL, WHICH IS HIS JOB??”

But in addition to that moment, which really was one of the most mystifying things I’ve ever seen anyone do on a football field, I was also thinking about some other key points in Clemson’s 2015 campaign; events that past versions of this team would have handled quite differently. In the end, I think these moments probably defined Clemson’s season.

Here they are in reverse order: 5. SEPT. 17, CLEMSON AT LOUISVILLE KEVIN DODD SACKS KYLE BOLIN With less than 30 seconds to go in the game, with the score 20-17, Clemson and Louisville within field-goal range to tie it up, defensive end Kevin Dodd brought Cardinals quarterback Bolin to the ground behind the line of scrimmage.

That sack moved Louisville back out of field goal range and forced a desperate Hail Mary pass that was intercepted by the Tigers.

4. NOV. 7, FLORIDA STATE AT CLEMSON DEON CAIN SCORES For the first time all season, Clemson had gone into the locker room at halftime without the lead, and it was against their biggest division rival, at home, no less. And then early in the third quarter, DeShaun Watson completed a perfect screen pass to Deon Cain for a touchdown, and not only did they regain the lead, but they served notice that this was not your daddy’s Clemson Tigers; they were made of stronger stuff.

3. OCT. 24, CLEMSON AT MIAMI THE HURRICANES GET SHUT OUT Before an announced crowd of

around 44,000 (yeah, right) at Sun Life Stadium (a.k.a. Not The Orange Bowl), Clemson did everything about as perfectly as a football team could, massacring the ‘Canes 58-0 and getting Miami’s coach, Al Golden, fired the next day. When your third-string quarterback rushes for two touchdowns, you’ve had a good game. This is the one that caught the attention of a lot of skeptics, and let people know the Tigers were for real.

2. OCT. 10, GEORGIA TECH AT CLEMSON DABO BURIES “CLEMSONING” ONCE AND FOR ALL After beating an injury-plagued Georgia Tech team 43-24, Dabo Swinney was asked about “Clemsoning,” a.k.a. “The Art of Losing to a Lesser Opponent Immediately After a Big Win,” and that was all the ammunition he needed to take off on a rant for the ages, fiercely defending the team’s record against unranked opponents and rattling off an impressive list of big names the Tigers had beaten in the last few years.

“This football team has EARNED respect,” Swinney said angrily. “Ain’t nobody giving us anything.” If any Clemson fans out there ever doubted that this man bleeds orange, they didn’t anymore.

1. OCT. 3, NOTRE DAME AT CLEMSON CLEMSON’S DEFENSE SAVES THE TIGERS’ SEASON It seems like a long time ago now, but I have no doubt that this is the most important moment of the Tigers’ season. With seven seconds left in the fourth quarter, Clemson’s defense blocked an attempted two-point conversion by the Irish that would’ve tied the game. It was such an intense moment of down-and-dirty, rain-soaked, bring-your-own-guts football that you could hardly blame Coach Swinney for dropping to his knees when the defense came through.

When Greenville Civitan Club members went out to ring bells for the Salvation Army at Hobby Lobby recently, the location was missing the provided red kettle, aprons and bells.

Habitat Greenville was one of 40 Habitat affiliates selected by Publix Super Markets Charities to receive funding for a new home build in 2016. The donation is part of the foundation’s $4 million gift to Habitat for Humanity affiliates across the Southeast, which will fund the construction of 40 new homes. In South Carolina, six other affiliates will also receive funding.

Greer Community Ministries (GCM) is again offering its Gift with Purpose program, which allows donors to give $20 in honor of someone who blesses their life. Greenville Tech Foundation’s Empowering Tomorrow Capital Campaign exceeded its $3 million goal set in May 2014. The foundation announced it has received gifts, pledges and planned gifts totaling $3,070,700. Of the money raised, $1 million has been designated for scholarships, $484,000 has been donated for equipment needs and $1.6 million for other college needs.

The Greater Greenville Association of Realtors recently presented $9,000 from its annual Lobs, Links and Lanes fundraiser to Rebuild Upstate. The nonprofit helps low-income homeowners with home repairs and accessibility improvements. Clemson University Chief Information Security Officer Kevin McKenzie has been appointed to the International Consortium of Minority Cybersecurity Professionals Strategic Advisory Board. The nonprofit consortium launched in 2014 offers its members mentoring opportunities, professional development and networking resources to help bridge the cyber divide that results from the under representation of minorities in the fast-growing field of cyber security.

The Riverside High School Speech and Debate Team won first place at the 15th Annual Cougar Classic at Asheville High School. Furman University chemistry professor Lon Knight has been named a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in recognition of his accomplishments in the scientific community. Dr. Knight was among 347 Fellows worldwide to be honored in 2015 for their contributions to innovation, education and scientific leadership. The Fellows will be recognized in February 2016 at the AAAS annual meeting in Washington, D.C. Knight, who joined the Furman faculty in 1971, is the Charles Ezra Daniel Professor of Chemistry at the university. From 1981 to 2014, he served as the chair of the department, which consistently ranks among the top 10 undergraduate colleges in the country in producing Ph.D. candidates in chemistry.

Mitchell Road Christian Academy second-graders collected canned goods, non-perishable food and other items for Miracle Hill’s food pantry.

Stone Academy thirdgraders participated in the Pillowcase Safety Project. The project is a preparedness education program by the Red Cross for grades three through five. It teaches students about personal and family preparedness, local hazards and coping skills. Red Cross volunteers lead students through a “learn, practice, share” framework to engage them in disaster preparedness. Students receive a pillowcase upon completion of the program in which they are encouraged to build an emergency supplies kit.

R E A L E S TAT E N E W S Moderate Expansion, Easing Prices Expected for Commercial Real Estate Markets Sustained job growth throughout the country and improving credit conditions are forecast to help keep commercial real estate activity expanding into next year, but property prices are likely to slightly cool off after reaching their peak in some major markets, according to the National Association of Realtors® quarterly commercial real estate forecast.

National of�ice vacancy rates are forecast by Realtors® to decrease 0.8 percent to 14.8 percent over the coming year as continued job creation drives demand. The vacancy rate for industrial space is expected to decline 1.4 percent to 9.7 percent, and retail availability to decrease 1.3 percent to 11.3 percent. With new apartment construction projects coming through the pipeline in several markets, only multifamily vacancies are forecast to increase over the next year, from 6.1 percent to 7.3 percent.

Matthew Thrift, 2015 President of The Greater Greenville Association of Realtors® and Broker-in-Charge of Berkshire Hathaway Home Services in Simpsonville, SC, says the outlook for the commercial real estate sector continues to look bright despite the multiple headwinds that have held back the economy in recent months. “Temporary turbulence in the �inancial markets, a stronger U.S. dollar hurting exports and economic weakness overseas chipped away at third quarter growth and led to some deceleration in the pace of commercial investments,” he said. “The good news is that these deterrents are slowly residing, which should ultimately reawaken the growing appetite for commercial space heading into next year.”

According to Thrift, increases in lending and investment activity will be driven by steady job creation and slightly easier access to credit.

While healthier local labor markets are expected to slowly pull down vacancy rates while pushing rents higher, the modest opening of the credit box is an especially important development for Realtors®, who are mostly engaged in deals of $1 million or less and have clients that rely heavily on �inancing from local community banks and credit unions.

Although most Realtor® who practice commercial are still reporting tight lending conditions, an increasing share are saying that credit is becoming slightly easier to obtain.

Regionally, several states in the South and West have outperformed the rest of the country in job growth over the past year. Led by strong demand for apartments from faster household formation and rent growth, metro areas in those states are expected to see elevated levels of new construction, which will lead to a slight uptick in vacancy rates.

“The best days for multifamily housing could be winding down as new construction has already surpassed historical averages,” adds Thrift. “This sector has been the industry’s top performer over the past several years as a result of younger households struggling to become homeowners and the demand for apartments far exceeding supply in many markets.”

Even though rising occupancy and rents will continue, property prices are forecast to decline slightly in 2016 as the Federal Reserve starts to raise interest rates. With cap rates already compressed to very low levels, Thrift anticipates short-term rate increases in December, and then again in March, which could slightly temper market growth. However, investments are still expected to continue on an upward trend.

“Rising sales and investor optimism in recent years has pushed prices past their peak in many of the larger commercial markets,” says Thrift.

“Investors – especially those abroad – looking for better yields will likely seek to invest their larger sums of cash in smaller markets and into lowerend properties.”

An exhibition on display at Greenville’s Hampton III Gallery through Dec. 31 features more than two dozen of Blair’s works, including paintings and painted relief sculptures. Also on dis-

play is the work of Kevin Isgett and Diane Kilgore Condon, who studied under Blair at Bob Jones University, and Nancy Jaramillo and John Pendarvis, who were Blair’s students at the Greenville County Museum of Art. Well-known Greenville artist Sharon Campbell curated the exhibit.

Blair is a country boy. The rural landscape he grew to love in his hometown of Atchison, Kan., is without a doubt reflected in the abstract oil, gouache and acrylic paintings that have earned him state and national acclaim. He is also known for whimsical animal figures, birds of the poultry variety.

“Blair’s students learned humor; a generosity and lightness of spirit; to take art seriously, but not oneself; to hold your work to the highest artistic standards and to learn, rather than be disappointed, when things go awry,” Campbell wrote in a catalog for the exhibit.

Blair once described his style as “neither realistic nor abstract:” instead he called his art “visual poetry.”

Blair won the Verner Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2005. It is the highest award given by South Carolina in the arts.

KEVIN ISGETT

Isgett has been a full-time faculty member at BJU for nine years. Isgett’s art reflects his interpretation of his childhood homes and neighborhoods. As a child he lived with grandparents in old worn-out houses that stood on the edges of corn and tobacco fields in the lower part of South Carolina. He uses his childhood memories of the land and the homes as the catalyst for his abstract paintings. Isgett said in his artist statement that he is trying to capture the feelings he associates with those early homes and his carefree childhood day and creating a “poetry of remembrance.”

NANCY JARAMILLO Transience is integral to Nancy Jaramillo’s view of the world, the exhibit catalogue said. She’s traveled from Greenville to Philadelphia to Japan to Columbia.

Her work includes portraits enhanced with gold leaf, encounters with leaves and birds and variations on themes from various cultures, Campbell wrote in the program.

DIANE KILGORE CONDON When Condon and some other artists found themselves being priced out of Greenville’s prospering downtown, Condon found a new home in an old mill general store on Pendleton Street. When she bought the building for ArtBomb, she didn’t know she was taking the first step in creating an arts district in The Village of West Greenville.

JOHN PENDARVIS Pendarvis is a musician as well as an artist. Pendarvis’ works are representations of jazz band musicians, dancing, African ceremonial masks and spiritual themes.

Comedy without apologies What do comedian George Lopez and Donald Trump have in common?

clandrum@communityjournals.com George Lopez may not like what Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump says, but he likes that the outspoken billionaire doesn’t apologize for it.

“If you’re going to say it, stick by it,” said the comedian who will perform in Greenville on Saturday during the Comedy Get Down Tour with Cedric the Entertainer, D.L. Hughley, Eddie Griffin and Charlie Murphy.

The same is true for comedians, Lopez said.

“If you look at history, whenever a comedian apologizes for his behavior, you can look at it as the start of his demise.”

He points to Andrew Dice Clay’s tearful apology on the Arsenio Hall show as an example.

“If you’re in stand-up, say it and stand behind it,” he said, noting fellow tour performer D.L. Hughley’s refusal to apologize for saying on “The View” that Caitlyn Jenner looked like Mrs. Doubtfire. “We don’t apologize for our words. Stand-up is the freest form of conversation.”

Lopez said Trump’s outspokenness is actually helping people, not hurting.

“You can’t have a society where people tell you what you want to hear,” he said. “Political correctness is a veneer. It hides what people are really feeling.”

But while Lopez won’t apologize for something he says during his stand-up, he admits some topics won’t find their way into his act.

“Of course there are things that are offlimits,” he said. “Personal attacks on a person’s family, that’s off-limits. There is a line.

People are sick. People are suffering. I have a heart.”

Chorale continues Christmas tradition CINDY LANDRUM | STAFF

clandrum@communityjournals.com For many in Greenville, it wouldn’t be Christmas without the Greenville Chorale’s annual family Christmas program.

Dan Forrest, a well-known and nationally and internationally known composer who formerly taught at Bob Jones University, and the Blue Ridge High School Concert Choir will join the 150-voice choir in a concert Friday at Furman University’s McAlister Auditorium.

“He is an in-demand composer all over the world,” said Bing Vick, the Chorale’s longtime conductor. “He brings a fresh and beautiful approach to traditional carols.”

Margaret Blackwell will guest conduct the “Shepherd’s Pipe Carol,” a right she won at the Chorale’s gala.

The concert will pay tribute to Sir David Willcocks, a British conductor and composer whose name may not be that familiar to those outside of choirs. But his recording and television broadcasts of the Nine Lessons and Carols with the choir of King’s College Cambridge became a Christmas tradition for many around the world.

The concert will feature more than a dozen pieces, including several familiar carols, including “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” a tune that will turn the chorale into a much larger group when the audience sings along. The song has become a now-annual tradition for the chorale.

The high-energy Christmas concert will feature 27 Christmas tunes played by a live five-member band led by Joe Wehunt, a familiar name to audience members who have enjoyed similar music revue concerts at other Greenville theaters such as Centre Stage. Doug Norwine, an Upstate resident who was a staff musician for major motion-picture companies and was the baritone sax behind Lisa Simpson and her mentor, “Bleeding Gums” Murphy, on the Fox television series “The Simpsons,” will also appear.

Six cast members – Hannah Smith, Mary Evan Giles, Luke Smith, Aaron Pennington, Seth Crawford and Beverly Clowney – will be singing a wide variety of favorites from “Sleigh Ride” and “Jingle Bells” to “Blue Christmas” and “Silent Night.”

The concert features solos, duets and group ensembles.

Kimberlee Ferreira choreographed the show. Josh Morton is the show’s musical director and Kim Granner designed the set.

Huangry Sensual and Not-So-Sensual Meals with Andrew Huang

Rice is nice “Under-promise, over-deliver.” I live by this saying. You’re always going to be a hero when you blow away expectations. (Never mind the fact you’re usually the one setting those expectations at an all-time low.)

That’s more or less the reason why I love simple foods and hole-in-the-wall restaurants. They have the greatest potential for surprising and delighting – which is especially true when you subconsciously cap their potential based on factors like their location, say, in a strip mall that shares parking with a gas station.

This is exactly the case with Korean BBQ, a restaurant so simply named that you have to wonder if it’s an authentic Korean joint, or merely a meta-hipster interpretation of Korean barbecue. Spoiler alert: It’s pretty authentic, and there’s nary a hipster in sight.

I ordered the dolsot bibimbap, because, as I alluded to earlier, I’m a sucker for simple food, and it doesn’t get much simpler. Bibimbap is a staple Korean dish – literally translated, it means “mixed rice.” There’s a bowl of rice topped with vegetables and meat, arranged in perfectly distinct, colorful sections. In short, it’s just starch, vegetables and protein. My bowl has julienned carrots, pickled daikon, chopped romaine, soybean sprouts, bulgogi (slices of grilled marinated beef), and, on top, a fried egg over-easy.

And then there’s the dolsot part of the equation. Literally translated, it means “stone pot” – and while I don’t get a pot per se, everything is being served a sizzling hot stone bowl. (Seriously – I can hear the rice crackling well before the bowl arrives.) While the bibimbap part instructs me to mix everything together, the dolsot part demands that I wait.

Magic is the reward for such patience. That hot stone bowl turns some of the rice into a crispy, crunchy layer. (While I’m waiting, I break the yolk of the fried egg and let it run out because it’s better than doing nothing.) When I do mix everything together (I give the bowl about five minutes to work its magic), every spoonful delivers a kaleidoscope of flavor and texture.

Rice, coated in yolk, becomes silky smooth, though each grain remains distinct rather than gummy. On top of that, there’s crunch from the crisped rice, carrots, daikon and sprouts – enough to lighten the rice’s creaminess. Savory bulgogi adds substance and counters the sweetness and punch of the vegetables. I don’t really care for the romaine because I think lettuce sucks, but other than that, every bite is a perfect bite. I am feeling some kind of way about each bite.

It doesn’t matter that there’s someone pumping gas right outside, or that this dish isn’t highconcept and unique. Sometimes, simple food is just good food, regardless of expectations.

No-so-happy endings

Italian neorealism takes on ordinary life Italian neorealism is a style of filmmaking that came out of postwar Italy. It differs from Hollywood films of the time in that sets and stars were rarely used. Many of the actors were not actors at all, and the movies were mostly shot on location.

The stories often involved working-class, everyday people dealing with life as it had become after Mussolini. The style is often characterized by hand-held camera work, which is barely noticeable now that hand-held cameras have become so popular in American television. Italian neorealists also felt no need to have a happy ending, as their American counterparts of the time did.

The following examples can all be found on Amazon for rent, and “8 1/2” and “The Bicycle Thief” are also available at the Greenville County Library.

“8 1/2” 1968 | Directed by Federico Fellini This is listed as the 10th greatest film of all time by Sight and Sound magazine and won two Academy Awards.

The film is about a film director, played by Marcello Mastroianni, who’s creatively stuck and looking for inspiration. The title refers to the fact that Fellini himself had made eight and half other films when he embarked on this one.

“THE BICYCLE THIEF” 1948 | Directed by Vittorio De Sica Also known as “Bicycle Thieves,” this is one of the best examples of the genre. It’s about a man who gets a job as a bicycle delivery person, but then his bicycle is stolen, preventing him from earning a living. If you’ve seen the film “The Player,” which I mentioned in a previous column, there is a pivotal scene where the characters played by Vincent D’Onofrio and Tim Robbins go to see this movie.

“BLOW-UP” 1966 | Directed by Michelangelo Antonioni This one is actually in English. It stars Vanessa Redgrave and David Hemmings.

Hemmings plays a photographer who notices that he has inadvertently taken a photo that reveals a dead body in the background. He blows up the image to see it better, hence the title. The film was later remade by Brian De Palma (“Scarface,” “The Untouchables,” “Carrie”) into a loose adaption known as “Blow Out,” starring John Travolta. It’s about an audio engineer who is recording sound effects for a movie when he records the tire of a car blowing out. He later notices something about the audio that reveals there’s more to the story. It’s actually available for free with Amazon Prime.

“Wherever There Is Light” is the story of a newlymarried couple during the social upheaval and violence of World War II. Julian Rose leaves Germany in the 1920s for America where he meets Kendall Wakefield, daughter of the founder of an AfricanAmerican college. The college helps bring Julian’s family to safety during WWII, and the two families’ futures are forever intertwined.

An unlikely couple from the start, Julian and Kendall’s relationship spans three decades and multiple continents. Julian makes a fortune in turbulent times of postwar Europe and even works as an interrogator at the Nuremberg Trials. Kendall gains fame photographing liberated concentration camp survivors. Julian longs to settle down and hopefully experience the happiness his parents never had, but Kendall’s artistic pursuits bring intriguing encounters with some of the leading intellects of the age such as Picasso and Sartre. The enduring relationship of Kendall and Julian helps them overcome hatred and the horrors of Nazism and envision their own brave new world.

Golden’s background perfectly suits him to write historical fiction and nonfiction. During his career as a journalist, Golden interviewed U.S. presidents, several secretaries of state; three Israeli prime ministers; and Soviet President Gorbachev. Drawing from these experiences, Golden has written five books, all with international and political themes.

Outlaw country Greenville’s Brimstone Highway is pure honky-tonk Last Halloween, the local quintet Brimstone Highway took on quite a challenge at Greenville’s Gottrocks club: They opened for the Piedmont Boys. They stepped onstage in front of a full house of people who were there to see one of the most popular bands in the Upstate in their natural onstage element.

I was at that show, and I’m happy to say that Brimstone Highway came through with flying colors. Playing a rowdy brand of pure honky-tonk country, the band sprinkled in the requisite crowdpleasing Johnny Cash and Dwight Yoakam covers, but they also included a heavy dose of Brimstone singer /guitarist Quenton Mashburn’s originals.

The songs were so well-constructed and true to the ARTIST: Brimstone Highway classic outlaw country sound that they fit in perfectly VENUE: Smiley’s Acoustic Café next to the masters of the genre, and that’s about as 111 Augusta St. big a compliment as I can pay. By the end of the show, the crowd was on their feet and cheering, and it felt WHEN: Friday, Dec. 11, 10 p.m. like a very important moment for the band.

Brimstone Highway first came on my radar in 2014 as a rockabilly-leaning group, but Mashburn says that the band’s move towards more straight-ahead country was probably inevitable.

“We kind of evolved into this,” he says. “We came together as a rockabilly band, but as a writer, I’ve always been a country writer, and as a singer, I’ve always been a country singer. So what’s happened within the last year is that we just got the sound right. I’ve got a good band together that really understands that sound; that classic, old-school country sound.”

Perhaps one of the reasons that the original songs I heard at the Gottrocks show were so strong is that Mashburn sets his songwriting sights so high.

“My favorite writer is Hank Sr., but I like Guy Clark, Jerry Jeff Walker, Waylon and a lot of those kind of guys,” he says. “I don’t know if it comes out in what I write musically, but maybe lyrically it does. If you’re listening to people playing songs about everyday life, but not real heavy stuff, people get off on that. I’ve always said that when people have a long hard week and want to kick their heels up, I think we’re the right band.”

The band, who will play at Smiley’s Acoustic Café in downtown Greenville Friday night, has gone through some lineup changes, but Mashburn says that the current group, which features bassist Chuck Hughes, pedal-steel player Mike Bagwell and lead guitarist Mike Merck, is the strongest he’s had.

“Mike coming along on lead guitar has been a real godsend,” he says. “He understands when to play and how to play, and it leaves so much room vocally. I’ve never been as happy with any other guitarist. And what can you say about Mike Bagwell?

He’s a master of what he does. There’s a lot of talent up on that stage, and it makes it a hell of a lot easier to sing, when you’ve got that group of guys behind you.”
