Get Out! Greenville

THIS WEDNESDAY! OCT. 11 Will Crooks/staff

Greenville is a match made in heaven for outdoor enthusiasts, with the city and surrounding region offering biking and running trails, lakes, and mountains. Get Out! Greenville, presented by the Greenville Health System, is an annual celebration and showcase of that outdoor recreation culture.

“Our goal is to be the premier festival in the Upstate for individuals and families looking for outdoor activities,” says Joe Lanahan, program manager at Greenville County Rec.

Event competitions include trail races of 50k, 25k, and 10k that run through Lake Conestee Nature Park, as well as a 1.5-mile kid’s race, and cyclocross races for youth, amateurs, and professionals. Attendees can also explore and try out various outdoor activities, including stand-up paddle boarding, rock climbing, slack lining, and disc golf. Lanahan told the Greenville Journal that toss & fetch, a “sport [that] consists of throwing a Frisbee for your dog on a marked field for points,” will also be an event highlight. “The local club will be in the festival village all day with demos and info about the league starting in November here,” he added. The festival village will also have other outdoor games, food trucks, and vendors. Participating businesses and organizations include Sunrift Adventures, Greenville County Animal Care, Climb Upstate, Pine Bark Outfitters, Blazer Skate Shop, Muddy Sneakers, and several more. Additional entertainment includes live music from folk/rock duo Brother Oliver (11 a.m.), soul/ folk musician Vilai Harrington (12:15 p.m.), and pop/jazz trio Courteous Monk (1:30 p.m.).

“The True Grit Oyster Roast provides funds that are desperately needed to operate our emergency shelters. South Carolina is in the top five in the nation for the number of women who are killed by their partners, and Greenville County reports the most incidents of domestic violence in the state,” says Amanda Manly, director of development and communications at Safe Harbor. She adds, “There are women and children right here in our community who desperately need to escape a violent home, and this event helps to make sure that they have somewhere to go.” This year’s fundraising goal is set at $55,000. —Emily Pietras
