The South Carolina Supreme Court will not rule on the legality of a governance change proposed by Greenville Health System’s (GHS) board of trustees, saying the proposal was too unformed for the justices to evaluate.

“Because GHS has not finalized a proposal as to the restructuring nor even made a final decision to reorganize, the Court cannot determine whether a restructuring plan would violate any statutory or constitutional provisions,” the court said in a document issued Jan. 15.

Rep. Mike Pitts (R-Laurens) created an uproar this week when he filed a bill that would require all journalists to register with the state government.

Tyler Jones, spokesman for the South Carolina House Democrats, called the bill “bizarre” and “the latest in a series of exceptionally dumb and unconstitutional proposals we’ve seen from South Carolina Republicans for years.”

Bill Rogers, executive director of the S.C. Press Association (of which the Greenville Journal is a member), told The State newspaper the bill is “totally unconstitutional.”

But Pitts said in a statement on his Facebook page that he filed the legislation to highlight hypocrisy in the media, especially the way reporters cover Second Amendment gun rights.

“I filed this legislation as an experiment to make a point about the media and how they only care about the Constitution when it comes to their portion of the [First] Amendment,” Pitts said. “In doing so, it put the

media under the microscope, and they did not like it.”

He said members of the media ignore other parts of the Constitution and only care about freedom of the press.

“They constantly attack people who follow their Christian beliefs and attempt to portray them as bigots, and they certainly do not like the fact that normal everyday Americans gather to petition the government and air grievances,” he said.

He added that the media appears to wish the Constitution didn’t include the Second Amendment.

“It strikes me as ironic that the first question [regarding his bill] is constitutionality from a press that has no problem demonizing firearms,” Pitts told the (Charleston) Post & Courier.

clandrum@communityjournals.com After this Saturday, the SAT – long considered the gold standard of college admission tests – gets a whole new look.

But that doesn’t change the advice Bill Dingledine, a certified education counselor, gives to the age-old question from prospective college students: Which admission test should I take – the SAT, or the younger but increasingly popular ACT? “It’s absurd there are two college admission tests,” Dingledine said. “I advise students to go online, download the SAT and ACT free practice tests, take them and see which one they like and do better on, and concentrate on it.”

The current SAT is generally considered a test to evaluate a student’s aptitude for college work, while the ACT is said to measure how well a student learned the material taught in high school.

The new SAT “will be more like the ACT,” said Jason McCreary, Greenville County Schools’ director of accountability and quality assurance. “I think the change was to make the SAT more relevant. The ACT surpassed the SAT in the number of test-takers in 2012.”

McCreary said a student’s grade point average predicts how well a student will do in his first year of college better than his SAT score.

The new SAT is now aligned to Common Core standards and will feature several updates and changes, says the website of the College Board, the company that runs the SAT. The test is moving away from obscure vocabulary words that past students memorized solely for that one-day testing experience, to words they are likely to encounter in college or

• Scaling back The SAT is scaling back to the iconic 1,600 max score, down from the current 2,400. Students can score 800 points on each of its two sections: math and verbal, which includes writing and language.

• Calculating help The math portion has two parts – one that allows a calculator and another that forbids it. The old test allowed calculators on the entire math portion.

• Fewer choices Each multiple-choice question has four possible answers, down from five on the old SAT. • Vocabulary words Gone are the infamous SAT vocabulary words that prompted students to memorize definitions just for the test.

Now, students will be asked to identify the meaning of a word or phrase as it used in reading passages.

• “Real-world” problems The math section no longer has brainteasers; instead, it will include more school-based math such as geometry, trigonometry and algebra.

The national SAT test will be administered the final time in its current form on Saturday, Jan. 23. Beginning March 5, a new test will be given.

Say yes to after-school programs IN MY OWN WORDS

At United Way of Greenville County, our work is focused on building a Cycle of Success through school readiness, high school graduation and financial stability so all in our community can live safe, stable, successful lives. Education – from infancy through adulthood – is an elemental part of this work.

We know that high school graduation is a key indicator of a person’s long-term financial stability. We also know that low-income children who are at risk for dropping out of school need more resources and support than schools alone can be expected to provide.

We believe, and research proves, that after-school and summer learning programs can help kids stay on the Cycle of Success by keeping them engaged in school and enabling them to graduate from high school equipped with 21st-century skills.

In 2009, United Way established BOOST as a strategic education initiative. BOOST works to expand access and improve the quality of afterschool programs for children in grades K-12 in Greenville County. The vast majority of research over the past two decades has

BOOST partners with a wide range of after-school program providers: schools, YMCAs, Salvation Army Boys & Girls Clubs, city and county parks and recreation programs, and a host of independent organizations to improve the quality of their programming and to encourage collaboration. This is making a measurable impact on the students who participate in these programs.

Unfortunately, like most communities across the nation, Greenville County’s 200plus after-school and summer programs remain largely disconnected from one another and operate with limited capacity. Many cities and communities across the country have established entities like BOOST to build a stronger, more connected after-school system that is aligned with the public school district and adheres to best practices and shared standards of quality in order to gauge success.

School choice matters for SC families IN MY OWN WORDS

In a society where Americans have numerous choices from the brands of coffee they drink to the types of cars they drive, it is understandable that parents are demanding more of a say in where they send their chil-

dren to school.

Every child is unique, with distinctive interests and learning styles. Parents know that a school that might work for one student may not be a good fit for another.

In many states, South Car-

School Choice Week, Jan. 24-30, the largest celebration of opportunity in education in U.S. history.

National School Choice Week provides parents a good opportunity to review the six different education options now available in the Palmetto State.

First: South Carolinians can choose traditional public schools for their kids. With some limitations, the state allows parents to choose traditional public schools outside of their existing school zones.

Second: Magnet schools, which focus on themes such as math, science, technology and the performing arts, also exist. Both are part of open enrollment, or public school choice.

Third: The Palmetto State also offers a variety of charter schools – tuitionfree public schools that are given the leeway to be more innovative.

Fourth: South Carolina is one of 41 states with a tuition-free online academy, allowing students to go to school entirely online.

Fifth: Parents in South Carolina can also send their children to private schools, and the state offers assistance in the form of scholarships or tax deductions to qualifying families.

Sixth: Parents have the freedom to educate their children at home, a choice more parents are making than ever before.

Parents who are not happy with their children’s current schools, or would

like to explore other options, should use January to consider the alternatives available to them. National School Choice Week offers an opportunity to visit schools, ask questions of teachers and administrators, and talk with other parents to find a school that may be a better fit.

Why is this process important? In addition to ensuring greater peace of mind, research has shown that when parents actively choose the schools their children attend, or choose to educate their children in the home, high school graduation rates increase dramatically.

A student with a high school diploma will, over the course of his or her life, earn more than a quarter million dollars more than a student who has dropped out. High school graduates are far less likely to be incarcerated, and are six times more likely to participate in community and civic affairs, than individuals without high school diplomas.

Most importantly, school choice matters because every child in America has potential. Today’s students are tomorrow’s leaders, and together, we must do everything possible to prepare them for success.

Projections show the state will receive more than $1 billion in added tax revenues in fiscal year 2016-17, which starts in July.

Haley said she wants to spend $345 million more on the state’s crumbling road system. Of that, $231 million is from one-time money and $49 million from her proposed gas tax increase.

Included in the budget is $131 million to phase in the first year of an income tax reduction. Haley said she would veto any legislation that imposes a net tax increase.

Meanwhile, legislators are under fire to address public education in light of a recent state Supreme Court ruling in favor of rural school districts that sued the state in 1993 for failing to provide their students the opportunity to get a quality education. Haley’s budget calls for $300 million more for schools.

The big concern from educators is that Haley’s plan and the others being floated in the Legislature confer all revenue from any gas tax hike to road maintenance and improvements. Meanwhile, each plan that cuts income taxes takes all of the reductions from the state General Fund – the pot of money that pays for K-12 education, higher education, health and social services, public safety and general government.

Despite fervent promises at the time, the penny sales tax implemented by Act 388 in 2006, has not generated the amount of money needed to reimburse school districts for the property tax revenue they lost in the tax swap. Consequently, school boards have shifted the tax burden to business property and vacation or rental homes, leaving business owners howling.

“Education has been getting the short end since Act 388 was passed,” Saylors said.

Part of the problem is that Act 388 relies on a revenue source that is not as stable as the one it replaced, Saylors said. Saylors and other board members are concerned schools will see a repeat if this tax swap goes through and the economy takes another downturn, forcing people to spend less money and buy less gas.

“What happens to services funded by those sources?” he said. “Act 388 looked good on paper to some people, too.”

State Sen. Greg Hembree (R-Myrtle Beach), however, calls the tax swap “a good idea.”

“It’s a net tax cut for South Carolinians,” he said at a recent legislative workshop for the media.

“That’s a good way to fund road construction. That’s a smart way to fund road construction.”

While Haley’s budget does provide more money for education, school districts may not see much of a bottom line increase.

Haley’s budget also includes $12 million from the state’s capital reserve fund for school bus leases or purchases. Legislators passed a law in 2007 that required the state to buy enough new school buses to replace the entire fleet every 15 years. But the recession hit shortly afterward and lawmakers have ignored the law.

The governor’s budget calls for raising the base student cost in the Education Finance Act by $80 per student – but that doesn’t mean the district will actually get that much additional money, said School Board Chairwoman Lisa Wells. The governor wants to increase the base student cost by taking money from other pots of money school districts already receive, she said.

“The last time there was a big increase in base student cost, it ended up basically being a wash for the school district,” Wells said.

Haley wants $15 million for teacher incentives, including $7,500 annual scholarships for students who commit to teaching in the state’s poor districts that have more than 12 percent teacher turnover. A teacher would have to work in those schools for two years for each year they receive the scholarships.

SCHOOL BUILDINGS The governor wants to set aside 1 percent of the state’s general obligation debt capacity for K-12 schools. The bonds would be issued for no more than $200 million per year so districts with the most need would be able to renovate schools or build new ones. It is unlikely Greenville County would benefit from this. The district completed a billion dollar school construction plan in 2010.

In Greenville County, some students ride buses that were on the road when their parents were in school. The average age of Greenville’s fleet is 15 years, with 203 of the district’s 346 route buses at least 2001 models or newer. Another 101 buses are 1995 models. Four date back to 1988, and 16 of the district’s spare buses are 1988 models.

Breakdowns account for 42 percent of the late buses in the district.

BUS DRIVER PAY Haley’s budget also seeks to increase bus driver pay to $10.96 an hour in steps over several years.

That would leave out Greenville County Schools, which raised pay for starting bus drivers to $13 an hour this year to try to combat turnover. Over the last four years, the district has lost an average of 105 bus drivers per year.

Greenville County could benefit from Haley’s proposal to reimburse districts that bus students who live on busy roads closer than 1.5 miles to their school.

Haley’s proposed budget also includes more money for technology for schools.

Legislators will begin writing the state budget in February.

The state’s pay scale for teachers is “out of whack,” state Superintendent of Education Molly Spearman told a panel of lawmakers working on school reform proposals in light of a Supreme Court ruling that the state must do more for poorer school districts.

“I’m particularly stressed by our low starting salary,” she said.

The state’s top elected officials and education advocates have floated several ways to address teacher recruitment and retention.

Gov. Nikki Haley’s executive budget calls for $13.5 million in additional funding to scale up a rural teacher recruiting initiative. That program provides subsidized tuition for college students who teach in a district with an average 12 percent turnover in five years, enhances the student loan repayment program for recent graduates, pays for graduate coursework and degrees for career educators and gives teaching mentors technical assistance and salary supplements.

the number of years covered in the statewide minimum salary schedule, which would give a pay boost to the state’s most veteran teachers.

The state’s minimum salary schedule raises pay for each year of teaching experience and for each advanced degree. But that schedule only has 22 steps. Some districts extend the salary steps on their own initiative; Greenville County Schools, for instance, adds steps 23 through 27. But not all districts can afford to do so.

The South Carolina Department of Education wants the Legislature to extend the minimum salary schedule to 23 years, a move that would affect about 20 percent of the state’s public school teachers.

But members of the independent Education Oversight Committee, comprised of educators, business leaders and elected officials, said while such a change may help retain some of the state’s most veteran teachers, it would do nothing to get more teachers into the pipeline.

The EOC instead wants to reallocate some state education money to raise the minimum salary schedule for teachers with fewer than five years experience.

The minimum salary schedule is exactly that – a minimum. Some districts pay more in order to compete with neighboring districts or private industry for teachers. The Greenville school district pays 12.6 percent to 16.8 percent more than the minimum, depending on a teacher’s years of experience and degree.

bjeffers@communityjournals.com At a press conference this week, Mayor Knox White declared Jan. 19 as Solarize Greenville Day, in what he said is an effort to encourage residents and business owners to consider using solar energy for power.

The announcement precedes an event on Saturday hosted by Solarize South Carolina that allows people go on a selfguided Upstate Solar Tour of three homes retrofitted with solar panels and a new home constructed with solar shingles.

The tour is available from noon to 4 p.m., and the homeowners will showcase their systems and discuss why they decided to use solar energy.

Ashley Edwards, marketing and outreach manager for Solarize South Carolina, said solar energy use is growing and is up from 580 solar installations in the state in 2014 to 830 currently.

The organization, which is part of SmartPower, was responsible for 92 of those installations, Edwards said. The company offers free assessments for residents considering solar energy and also helps provide financing through Dividend Solar.

Former U.S. Rep. Bob Inglis said the state is helping to support solar energy with a law passed in 2014 that allows third-party financing of rooftop solar panels. That law

also allows net metering, a process where homeowners sell unused solar energy to an energy company.

Inglis is executive director of RepulicEn, a politically conservative organization that promotes clean energy and solutions to climate change. Inglis said while his organization promotes clean energy, he wants to see subsidies that support the industry eliminated and allow the energy industry to become more market-driven.

But he added after the press conference that energy companies such as those that use coal-fired plants should be charged a carbon tax due to costs that “aren’t seen on the meter,” such as long-term damage to the environment and public health.

“When [companies] put that soot in the air, somebody ends up at GHS [Greenville Health System],” he said.

Inglis would like to see the carbon tax paired with a dollar-for-dollar reduction of taxes in other areas so the government doesn’t grow any larger. The former congressman didn’t suggest a dollar amount for the carbon tax, but noted a “huge debate” is raging over what it should be.

gent, hypothetical or abstract dispute,” the justices wrote.

The GHS board voted last month to give final approval to a plan that paves the way for GHS to become part of a multiregional health system governed by a private nonprofit board. GHS would continue as a public entity, but would lease its facilities and grant operational control to this independent board, which would be based in Greenville, GHS officials have said.

However, the trustees agreed to wait on action from the Supreme Court before finalizing the changes. GHS officials and board members insist that GHS has the authority to take these steps without the blessing of the legislative delegation, which currently approves board nominees.

GHS board chairman Jim Morton said Wednesday in a statement, “In light of this action by the court – and the two Attorney General opinions that concluded this was a decision to be made by the trustees – the GHS Board of Trustees will be finalizing the details of the

proposed organizational changes in the near future.”

Greenville County legislators insist the board lacks the authority to lease GHS facilities and operational control to a private nonprofit board. Doing so gives away governing authority, which is not allowed under the legislation that created the GHS board, lawmakers say.

Burns said Wednesday that legislators will formulate a plan moving forward this week. He said he was “very disappointed” that GHS did not send the plan that it approved in December to the Supreme Court for consideration.

In response to the governance move, state Reps. Garry Smith, Mike Burns, Bill Chumley and Dwight Loftis prefiled a bill that says any government agency, body, commission or council whose board is appointed by a legislative delegation cannot convey its authority, duties and responsibilities to another entity, and creates a penalty for any that do so.

Burns said GHS’ actions sets a precedent for other state political subdivisions.

The bill is now in the Legislature’s Judiciary Committee waiting on consideration, Burns said Wednesday.

South Carolina ranks lower than the national average in the percentage of students who enroll in community colleges and transfer and graduate from fouryear schools.

While the vast majority of students who enter higher education through community colleges intend to earn a bachelor’s degree or higher, only 14 percent do nationally, reports the Aspen Institute.

In South Carolina, only 10 percent of students who started in community colleges in the fall of 2007 transferred and earned a bachelor’s degree within six years of their original enrollment.

South Carolina ranked 24th among the 43 states studied by the Community College Research Center at Teachers College, the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program and the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center.

bjeffers@communityjournals.com The proposed West End city park is moving forward; the Cancer Survivors Park may have hit a snag.

Greenville City Council members heard updates on both projects during the council workshop this week.

City park in the West End The city has agreed to pay the Columbus, Ohio-based landscape architecture firm MKSK $574,000 to design a plan for a proposed city park and surrounding area in the West End. Darren Meyer, a principal with MKSK, has family in Greenville and is familiar with the area after visiting often. He said he wants the park to protect the Reedy River. “It’s a great amenity, but it could use a little bit of help,” he said.

Meyer said he wants the new park to be a regional and national draw.

One of the firms that MKSK is partnering with is Endrestudio Architects and Engineers in California, which specializes in unique bridge designs. He said the new park could potentially include multiple bridge crossings.

MKSK is also tasked with developing an affordable housing strategy for the city in the process of designing the area around the park.

City Council is set to give final approval to appropriate the funds for the planning process in February. Once council approves the funds, MKSK can begin the six-month design process.

Cancer Survivors Park Some council members have concerns about allocating additional money for the Cancer Survivors Park.

The city entered into a public-private partnership to complete the park and has given $1.3 million toward its development. Half of those funds went toward a boardwalk, which is now completed and connects the trail to Church Street. The other half will be used for the bridge and realigning the Greenville Health System Swamp Rabbit Trail.

However, overages in creating the boardwalk, which formally opens to the public on Jan. 26, forced park organizers to use money intended for the second phase of the project, which included the bridge.

Edward Kinney, senior landscape architect for the city, said the city did not spend

any additional money on the project. Instead, park organizers used money they raised to cover the overages, but now they are short $500,000 for the second phase.

Park organizers have raised $4 million from private and corporate donors and received $500,000 from Greenville County Council.

Additional funds would come from the hospitality tax, and Kai Nelson, director of the Office of Management and Budget, said allocating the money would not hamper any capital improvement projects already scheduled by the city.

Mayor Knox White supports allocating the additional money, saying the money the council allocated is for infrastructure improvements the city asked park organizers to include.

White said plans have been in the works for about 10 years to redo the bridge over the Reedy River, which connects the trail from Falls Park to Cleveland Park.

Councilwoman Gaye Sprague asked for the city manager to gather more information about how Cancer Survivors Park organizers are spending money before council makes a decision whether to allocate more money for improvements.

Councilwoman Amy Ryberg-Doyle voiced concern about putting more hospitality tax toward new projects and neglecting established neighborhood parks like Cleveland Park, which she said needs updating.

“I feel very uncomfortable with a midyear appropriation of half a million dollars knowing what we know about the other planned spaces,” Doyle said.

White said the city already put over a million dollars into updating Cleveland Park several years ago, adding that the bridge connection is “critically important” to the trail.

White said the No. 1 complaint he hears about Cleveland Park concerns the bridge, “so I can’t think of anything more critical to Cleveland Park than getting this connection made, which right now basically is a barrier. People don’t go any farther than Falls Park.”

New Hampton Avenue bridge set to move forward APRIL A. MORRIS | STAFF

amorris@communityjournals.com Greenville County Council moved swiftly through its agenda on Tuesday night, wrapping up in just about an hour. Councilowoman Lottie Gibson’s seat was again vacant after her reported stroke earlier this month. Council members said she is recovering and has

moved from the hospital to a rehabilitation facility.

New Hampton Avenue Bridge Council voted unanimously for Greenville County to accept an 0.835mile portion of Hampton Avenue Extension as a county road from the SC Department of Transportation (SCDOT).

Accepting the road is part of the pro-

cess to install a new pedestrian bridge across a set of railroad tracks that would again link the Southernside community with City View.

SCDOT had removed the vehicular bridge, which was used by pedestrians, in 2012, calling it unsafe. Residents protested the bridge’s sudden removal with no input from the community.

Residents filed a federal complaint

alleging that SCDOT violated the Civil Rights Act by adversely impacting the neighborhood by cutting off access to health care, transportation and economic opportunity. The complaint was withdrawn in 2014 after SCDOT agreed to work with Greenville County on replacing the bridge.

er, assistant county administrator for community planning, development and public works. She said the county will solicit construction bids as soon as the construction drawings are complete, and estimates the bridge could be installed within a year.

Estimated total project costs are $1.3 million. The bridge was listed as one of the top priorities in the roads funding referendum that failed in November 2014.

Now that the county will maintain the section of road, crews will landscape both approaches to the bridge, which may create a potential connection to the GHS Swamp Rabbit Trail and Poe Mill neighborhood, Gucker said.

“It’s been a long time and we appreciate planning working with us,” said councilor Xanthene Norris, who represents the area. Norris added that she hoped to see the bridge installed before her term expires in two years.

Rezoning requests Council gave final approval to a rezoning request on Tanner Road, paving the way for a developer to build approximately 27 homes. Residents of the nearby Edwards Forest neighborhood protested the rezoning, citing traffic and the project’s high density. The developer agreed to decrease the density and council approved the rezoning in a 9-2 vote, with Sid Cates and Liz Seman voting against.

The council’s planning and development committee will consider a slate of 11 rezoning requests, including a mixeduse development near the intersection of Garlington and Pelham roads.

EMS award Greenville County adm i n i s t ra t o r Joe Kernell reported that re p re s e n ta tives of the county’s emergency medical system (EMS) attended the National Association of EMS Physicians annual meeting in San Diego this month. Training coordinator Jason Walchok received an award for best EMS research presentation focusing on treating patients with sepsis, he said.

In addition, Greenville County EMS has shared all their sepsis protocol research and educational materials with the SC Department of Health and Environmental Control, which has in turn shared them with the rest of the state, said spokesman Bob Mihalic.

The Turning Point is a nonprofit that offers residential recovery and is launching a women’s facility to help fill this critical need. Passersby on Pendleton Street may have noticed construction work going on at the former Harmon house, which is the facility’s new location and called Harmony House.

Harmony House Up to 30 women can live together in the historic home on Pendleton Street, where they will contribute to the household, find work and participate in a 12-step program, said Garzone.

Harmony House’s residential recovery model is different from the medical treatment model in that it does not involve medi-

However, “even in addiction and alcoholism, things are different and they [men and women] recover differently,” she said. Instead of the motel model, the new women’s facility features a home-like environment with a central kitchen and bedrooms along a hall.

getting and staying clean and sober. I think that’s a huge part of their recovery,” she said.

The program asks for a 90-day commitment, but Turning Point sets no time limit for staying in the program and no funds are needed to join. Women initially cannot leave the campus alone, but are transported to work and recovery meetings by staff.

Participants work initially for approximately three months to help pay program fees that cover rent, utilities and transportation, then begin earning their own money.

Transformation Crews wielding concrete saws were at work recently in Harmony House to convert the former flower shop on

the front of the building into a front desk, conference room and apartment for the on-site manager. The twisting staircase clad in floral wallpaper will be removed, and the two floors will be converted to bedrooms shared by two women at a time, said Garzone.

Four rooms will be added to the back of the house and an attic with vaulted ceiling and dormer windows could be converted to an overflow space, she said. A wrought-iron security fence will be built around the property to keep both the women and neighborhood safe, she added. Greenville Building is acting as general contractor for the project.

Garzone has been working for two years to bring the women’s facility to this stage and anticipates it opening this year. Finding an existing building to convert for a women’s facility was challenging, she said, but the Harmony House was the perfect size to create a self-supporting program.

She said she expects Harmony House to be filled right away, and she is already looking for another women’s facility to launch – ideally with 100 beds.

In the most recent State of Obesity report by HealthyAmericans.org, South Carolina ranks seventh in the nation for obesity rates. According to the report, obesity is much easier to prevent than reverse, and starting in childhood with healthy lifestyle factors is key to enacting a downward trend in the problem.

As a city, we devote huge amounts of real estate to car parking and we continue to build more and more large parking garages in business districts. Autonomous cars are coming within 10 years, many experts say, and we will wonder why we built all those parking garages. Are we seriously considering larger investments in transit, sidewalks and bike lanes rather than parking?

We don’t have funds to build sidewalks or bike paths to our schools, yet we continue to make highway-widening projects our top priority. We spend hundreds of millions on such projects, despite many studies that show you cannot build your way out of traffic congestion. amorris@communityjournals.com When Steve Grant, founder of Chris and Kelly’s HOPE Foundation, told an acquaintance that he had been hoping to receive the degree his son Kelly had been working on at College of Charleston, it was spoken in passing.

Grant had lost Kelly to drug addiction in 2010 just short of graduation; and just five years before, his son Chris had died from the same cause.

Grant launched Chris and Kelly’s HOPE Foundation in 2012 to support addiction treatment programs for adolescents and young adults, including the White Horse

Academy treatment facility for teenagers.

Grant had been talking with Steve Pulley, a 28-year-old student at Medical University of South Carolina, who was in long-term recovery from addiction.

Grant had connected with Pulley while he was working with programs to support students in recovery.

“I had commented that I regretted not getting Kelly’s degree,” Grant said, and was surprised when Pulley “called me two weeks before Christmas and said College of Charleston was going to award Kelly’s degree.” He traveled to Charleston Dec. 22 to pick up the degree.

“Kelly was a good student and in good standing. It was a great Christmas present,” he said.

In addition to raising funds for Chris and Kelly’s HOPE Foundation, Grant is involved in helping launch the College of Charleston Collegiate Recovery Program.

College recovery Steve Grant learned from Steve Pulley about campus recovery programs that support students recovering from addiction. Pulley completed a Ride 4 Recovery fundraiser in 2014, cycling 3,133 miles across the country in 57 days to mark his long-term recovery and benefit his alma mater Georgia Southern University’s Center for Addiction Recovery.

College of Charleston is in the early stages of a Collegiate Recovery Program with the support of the administration, Pulley said. When launched, it will be the first in the state, he said. Nationwide, more than 100 programs support students, including Penn State’s on-campus program and Vanderbilt University’s recovery housing.

The peer-to-peer support offered by these programs is essential and effective, and the programs can also attract out-of-state students, he said. Pulley is now a Medical University of South Carolina doctoral student studying physical therapy. He said he never would have made it to where he is now without the Georgia Southern program.

“It gives college students in recovery the chance to succeed and pursue their dreams,” he said.

Everyone from dance newbies to seasoned artists is invited to Pura Alegría Dance Company’s Salsa Night at the Zone premiere event on Jan. 29.

The premiere and workshops the following day will kick off the dance group’s monthly salsa socials, to be held every fourth Friday of the month at Greenville’s Empowerment Zone.

Pura Alegría, the dance company that organized Salsa Under the Stars, has brought in a showcase of international and regional dancers and performers for the event.

These performers include Jose Campaz, founder of Step-by-Step Dance Company in Greenville, and Rodrigo and Wendy Jimenez, ESPN World Salsa and Argentine Tango Champions.

The evening kicks off with a free beginner’s salsa lesson where salsa rookies can learn basic steps. The showcase follows at 10 p.m. and wraps with a Latin dance party featuring DJ Jim Sejas until 2 a.m.

Rebecca Ragland is a member of the Pura Alegría Dance Company, and has helped organize the premiere event and workshops. She encourages people with no previous dance experience to step out of their comfort zones and try the salsa.

“We want to have a welcoming, inclusive environment. We’re not salsa snobs,” Ragland said. “We want people to get exposure to salsa and find a new hobby and a way to socialize.”

On Saturday, the dance workshops will feature two salsa lessons. The Jimenezes will teach Kizomba and Sensual Bachata. Kizomba is an erotic dance originating from an Angolan musical style where partners lean intimately into each other as they move across the floor. Sensual Bachata is a mix of dance and theater with a strong leader and strong follower.

Campaz will then teach Columbian Salsa, in which dancers sway from side to side, instead of forward to back.

Ragland said she loves the way salsa brings people from diverse backgrounds together with a common interest.

“Salsa Zone helps to create opportunities for people to get together and grow, and dancing brings joy to people’s lives,” Ragland said. “It’s impossible to dance and not have my spirits lifted by the music and conversations with my partner on the dance floor.”

Whether you have years of dance experience under your belt, or are just entering the world of salsa, Ragland recommends coming to the premiere event to either learn the basic steps, or to enjoy learning from the professional dancers as they perform.

“You can never stop learning with salsa. You’re never the best dancer on the floor. You can always learn and grow,” said Ragland.

Faced with a daunting selection of health and fitness-focused gadgets and apps, how do users figure out which are the best fit for getting fit?

Kim Hein, program coordinator at Greenville Health System’s Life Center and council director for Girls on the Run, did in-depth research for her “Be Healthy, Be Appy” program and shared some of the best apps that she discovered work for many people.

My Fitness Pal app is a favorite of trainers and nutritionists, Hein said, with high functionality when it comes to tracking activity and food consumption. Other apps that offer food logging are helpful in creating a “food diary,” which lays out exactly what a person consumes and can greatly influence behavior, she said.

For tracking micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) and macronutrients (calories and energy), Hein recommends Cronometer, which provides very detailed information.

If you’re a runner, Hein said Map My Run helps lay out routes with a map. She uses it for the SoleMates group that raises funds for the Girls on the Run program. Run Keeper also keeps track of mileage and has GPS tracking; Hein said she favors this app while running or hiking.

Hein said a personal favorite is Sworkit, which shows videos of varying lengths, some as short as five minutes, that can be used to fit in

a workout. Hein said she also discovered Strava, a useful app for cyclists that lets you track your running and riding with GPS.

Watch the watchers Users should be cautious, however, because some apps can be inexact when it comes to calorie estimates of packaged foods and fresh foods, Hein said. These apps are not perfect, but close, she said.

Same thing goes for physical activity estimates, she said. “If an athlete and an overweight male, both weighing 230 pounds, each run 30 minutes, it would register they burned the same number of calories,” she said. With that same level of activity, the overweight man actually burns more calories, she said.

“The good thing is that technology is always improving,” Hein said.

While activity trackers from FitBit, Garmin and Jawbone can be attractive, apps can log your activity without the gadget, some of them using your smartphone, she said.

Some fitness tracker devices can be out of reach cost-wise for many people, Hein said. “It comes down to a personal choice that fits your lifestyle and budget.” She encourages users to try out different apps to find the one they like.

For some people, the best bet may be the low-tech option of encouragement and monitoring from a personal trainer, she said.

The Lego KidsFest tour is making a stop in Charlotte for the first time since its creation in 2009, with a three-day event spanning more than 3 acres where kids can build and participate in creative activities that might have even Mom and Dad joining in, KidsFest announced.

Each stop on the tour includes five handson and minds-on sessions that are each four and a half hours long.

Builders of all skills and interests can get creative in the Lego and Duplo Construction Zones, meet and learn from Lego Master Builders, participate in group builds, see dozens of large-scale and miniature models and displays made entirely from Lego bricks, and more, according to KidsFest’s website.

GAME ON TALKING POINTS ON SPORTS WITH VINCENT HARRIS

With the Panthers, it’s déjà vu all over again Playoff football is its own animal, separate from the chaos and carnage of the regular season. It’s a world where nothing is guaranteed, or even predictable.

Only in the playoffs could the Seattle Seahawks, one of the most unstoppable forces in the NFL for the past three seasons, spend the first half of their game against the Panthers looking as if they’d never seen a professional football field before. Only in the playoffs could the Panthers, who went into halftime up 310, come back out and completely lose whatever momentum they had, getting blanked in the second half and holding on by their fingernails to win 31-24.

Meanwhile, the bruised and battered Steelers somehow managed to make it to the second round, only to be edged by a touchdown against the equally bruised and battered Peyton Manning, meaning that if the Panthers get past the Cardinals this weekend, they’ll either be facing the Patriots or the Broncos in the Super Bowl.

Remove the Broncos from this equation and the Panthers’ immediate future has got to feel like a terrifying case of déjà vu to any die-hard Panthers fan.

There, awaiting the team in Charlotte this weekend, are the Cardinals: the team that drove a 12-4 Panthers team into absolute disarray in 2009, intercepting QB Jake Delhomme at every turn and humiliating Carolina at home, 33-13.

Just past the Cardinals lie, potentially, Tom Brady and the New England Patriots, the team that traded blows with the Panthers in one of the greatest Super Bowls of all-time, eking out a 32-29 win and bolstering a dynasty that’s continued to flourish for the last decade.

Most certainly, this is a better-equipped, better-prepared Panthers team that’s heading into these scenarios. Jonathan Stewart is clearly back at 100 percent, as his 106-yard game against Seattle demonstrated, and Cam Newton is superior to Jake Delhomme in just about every mea-

surable category except for out-of-control finger-licking, where Delhomme will always have the edge. They are miles deeper on offense in general, and the defense is the epitome of Coach Ron Rivera’s “Keep Pounding” philosophy.

And let’s talk about our esteemed opponents for just a moment, shall we? How about that Cardinals/Packers game? Has there ever been a weirder, more poorly officiated (they messed up a coin toss), oddly paced, more confusing, and ultimately more enjoyable playoff game than this one? This was a game in which Aaron Rodgers managed another 50-yard Hail Mary to send the game to overtime, only to have Larry Fitzgerald, the accursed, amazingly unstoppable Larry Fitzgerald, take over the game and singlehandedly send the Packers back to Green Bay. But despite the Panthers and the Cardinals having two of the most potent offenses in the NFL, I don’t think it’s going to be a shootout in Charlotte this Sunday,

simply due to the fact that both teams also have strong defenses.

But the Cardinals have more than Fitzgerald in their pocket this time; John Brown and Michael Floyd are both potentially deadly. It’ll be up to Josh Norman, Luke Kuechly and Thomas Davis to try to slow that trio down. Also, look for the Panthers D to put as much pressure as possible on Carson Palmer throughout the game. DT Kawann Short has 11 sacks this season, and Palmer repeatedly proved in the Packers game that he makes poor decisions when he’s rushed or when the pocket collapses.

On the offensive side for the Panthers, it might be all about the run. The Cardinals have allowed 381 rushing yards in their last three games, and that’s got to be music to the ears of Cam Newton and Jonathan Stewart.

SCHOLARSHIPS Polar Plunge benefits Antonakos Foundation A total of 158 people raised more than $7,100 through a Polar Plunge that benefitted the Antonakos Foundation. The Antonakos family – Melet, Kim, Olivia, Mills and Ana – was killed in a plane crash during an Alaskan vacation in the summer of 2013. A group of family, friends and community leaders formed a scholarship fund in their memory.

The foundation awards scholarships to students who best exemplify the characteristics of the family – a willingness to

serve, dedication to education and athletics and love for their community. The first scholarships were awarded in 2015 to five students.

Vance Jenkins, instructor in English and TAP Master Teacher at Greenville Technical Charter High School, has been awarded a full scholarship to Phillips Exeter Academy’s Humanities

Institute. The Academy is one of America’s most prestigious preparatory schools, known especially for the Jenkins Harkness table method of dialectical instruction, a method that Mr. Jenkins uses in his own classes. The scholarship is for the summer session and covers tuition, room, board, and travel for the Institute.

The annual award of $3,500 is applied for each year of a four-year bachelor’s degree program. Saying ‘I do’ in style: Today’s weddings are all about personality As Cupid sits sharpening his arrows for his big day next month, I’m reminded that 4,161 brides and grooms applied for marriage licenses in 2015, according to Greenville County Courthouse records, so suffice it to say that Cupid is already one very busy cherub.

Consequently, I thought that 2016 brides and grooms might want to take a look at trending wedding styles and options for that most magical day.

THE TREND IS PERSONALITY-PLUS Today’s weddings have a personality to them that mirrors the personalities of the bride and groom and are very customized events. These upscale, magazine-worthy events aren’t just for the jet set crowd anymore. Some of the most très chic weddings anywhere can be found in the Upstate.

I spoke with highly sought after wedding planner and coordinator Alexandria Barham of Upstate I Do. Barham heads a team of 15 full-time wedding planners, contract coordinators and assistants, and was kind enough to walk me through some of the wonderful choices that couples have these days.

As far as trends go, “Whatever is trending in interior design will implement itself in weddings the following year,” Barham says. More recent weddings are seeing an overall shift from the traditional rustic-country burlap and Mason jar candles into more high-end and classic – outdoor event or not – and “even with smaller budgets, you’re still going to choose things that have a high-end chic feel. Metallic and Lucite finishes in seating, tablescapes, chargers and glassware; with gold and rose gold being incredibly popular.”

Sharing a venue means cutting the travel time between wedding and reception. “It’s nice to have phases to your wedding, one area for the ceremony, another for the cocktail area and another for the reception and dance area,” Barham says. “This keeps people engaged, interested and wondering what the next phase will look like.”

“The guys are often overlooked when it comes to weddings because so much focus is on the bridal gown, but I love to see a really well-dressed groom,” Barham says. “I love it when he knows what looks good on him and … didn’t just get a black tux that sort of fit.” Tailoring a suit is a must because “he needs to look on point for his day as well; he’s in photos that will be around forever, too.

“I also like seeing combos that fit the venue; we’ve got this upscale look moving forward, but not every bride wants the basque James Bond high-end chic feel. Grey suits, sandy linen suits, a two-tone navy jacket with black lapels looks so sharp. It’s a great look to have the groom stand out from his groomsmen when they’re all in a grey and the groom is in a darker shade of grey or charcoal. It’s stunning.”

Bridesmaids are no longer wearing the exact same style of dress, either. Choosing a style that compliments each bridesmaid is key to a happy bridesmaid, Barham says. “Her smile is going to be a lot more genuine in the pictures if she feels good about the way she looks. Designers have realized this and now offer the same overall length, color and fabric of dress but in different styles, providing continuity while allowing each woman to look and feel her best.”

Why Use a REALTOR®?

Real estate transactions involve one of the biggest financial investments most people experience in their lifetime. Transactions today usually exceed $100,000. If you had a $100,000 income tax problem, would you attempt to deal with it without the help of a CPA? If you had a $100,000 legal question, would you deal with it without the help of an attorney? Considering the small upside cost and the large downside risk, it would be foolish to consider a deal in real estate without the professional assistance of a REALTOR®.

But if you’re still not convinced of the value of a REALTOR®, here are a dozen more reasons to use one: 1. Your REALTOR® can help you determine your buying power -- that is, your financial reserves plus your borrowing capacity. If you give a REALTOR® some basic information about your available savings, income and current debt, he or she can refer you to lenders best qualified to help you. Most lenders -banks and mortgage companies -- offer limited choices.

2. Your REALTOR® has many resources to assist you in your home search. Sometimes the property you are seeking is available but not actively advertised in the market, and it will take some investigation by your agent to find all available properties.

3. Your REALTOR® can assist you in the selection process by providing objective information about each property. Agents who are REALTORS® have access to a variety of informational resources.

REALTORS® can provide local community information on utilities, zoning. schools, etc. There are two things you’ll want to know. First, will the property provide the environment I want for a home or investment? Second, will the property have resale value when I am ready to sell?

4. Your REALTOR® can help you negotiate. There are myriad negotiating factors, including but not limited to price, financing, terms, date of possession and often the inclusion or exclusion of repairs and furnishings or equipment. The purchase agreement should provide a period of time for you to complete appropriate inspections and investigations of the property before you are bound to complete the purchase. Your agent can advise you as to which investigations and inspections are recommended or required.

5. Your REALTOR® provides due diligence during the evaluation of the property. Depending on the area and property, this could include inspections for termites, dry rot, asbestos, faulty structure, roof condition, septic tank and well tests, just to name a few. Your REALTOR® can assist you in finding qualified responsible professionals to do most of these investigations and provide you with written reports. You will also want to see a preliminary report on the title of the property. Title indicates ownership of property and can be mired in confusing status of past owners or rights of access. The title to most properties will have some limitations; for example, easements (access rights) for utilities. Your REALTOR®, title company or attorney can help you resolve issues that might cause problems at a later date.

6. Your REALTOR® can help you in understanding different financing options and in identifying qualified lenders.

7. Your REALTOR® can guide you through the closing process and make sure everything flows together smoothly.

8. When selling your home, your REALTOR® can give you up-to-date information on what is happening in the marketplace and the price, financing, terms and condition of competing properties. These are key factors in getting your property sold at the best price, quickly and with minimum hassle.

9. Your REALTOR® markets your property to other real estate agents and the public. Often, your REALTOR® can recommend repairs or cosmetic work that will significantly enhance the salability of your property. Your REALTOR® markets your property to other real estate agents and the public. In many markets across the country, over 50% of real estate sales are cooperative sales; that is, a real estate agent other than yours brings in the buyer. Your REALTOR® acts as the marketing coordinator, disbursing information about your property to other real estate agents through a Multiple Listing Service or other cooperative marketing networks, open houses for agents, etc. The REALTOR® Code of Ethics requires REALTORS® to utilize these cooperative relationships when they benefit their clients.

10. Your REALTOR® will know when, where and how to advertise your property. There is a misconception that advertising sells real estate. The NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® studies show that 82% of real estate sales are the result of agent contacts through previous clients, referrals, friends, family and personal contacts. When a property is marketed with the help of your REALTOR®, you do not have to allow strangers into your home. Your REALTOR® will generally prescreen and accompany qualified prospects through your property.

11. Your REALTOR® can help you objectively evaluate every buyer’s proposal without compromising your marketing position. This initial agreement is only the beginning of a process of appraisals, inspections and financing -- a lot of possible pitfalls. Your REALTOR® can help you write a legally binding, win-win agreement that will be more likely to make it through the process.

12. Your REALTOR® can help close the sale of your home. Between the initial sales agreement and closing (or settlement), questions may arise. For example, unexpected repairs are required to obtain financing or a cloud in the title is discovered. The required paperwork alone is overwhelming for most sellers. Your REALTOR® is the best person to objectively help you resolve these issues and move the transaction to closing (or settlement).

Allen Tate Raises $1.65 Million for Public Education in the Carolinas FUNday proceeds will fund resources, programs and instructional training.

Each fall for the past 18 years, Allen Tate Realtors® and employees have raised money for public education through the Allen Tate FUNday event. This year, the company raised more than $128,000, bringing the FUNday lifetime total to $1.65 million.

FUNday, which began as a one-day field day where agents “pay to play,” has evolved to four unique regional events in North and South Carolina. Actor Ronn Carroll has come full circle.

A veteran actor who built up dozens of credits on Broadway, in film and television during a 50-year career in New York, Carroll got his start in community theater while he was conducting the U.S. Navy Chorus in Washington, D.C. He returns to regional theater with a role in The Warehouse Theatre’s production of “Uncle Vanya,” opening on Jan. 29. It is Carroll’s second appearance on the Warehouse stage, the first coming many years ago in “The Cherry Orchard,” another Chekhov play.

“Uncle Vanya” tells the story of a retired college professor who returns to his countryside home with his new, younger wife. He decides to sell the estate and reinvest the money in an interest-bearing account, causing uproar among his relatives. Carroll plays the professor.

“In the play, I’m talked about more than I talk,” he said.

Carroll, who moved to Greenville two years ago, left Washington in 1964 and went to New York to pursue acting, which he discovered was his passion after he and others started the American Light Opera Company.

“I was very lucky,” he said. “I was fortunate to make some good connections in my first job.”

Carroll was singing and acting in a regional theater’s production of “Oliver!” The producer was the son-in-law of Richard Rodgers of Rodgers and Hammerstein fame.

Carroll landed a role in “Annie Get Your Gun” with Ethel Merman. “I got three years of work with that first audition with Mr. Rodgers,” he said.

Carroll, who did not go to school for theater, remembered when he walked into a room to do an early scene with Merman in “Annie Get Your Gun,” and there sat Irving Berlin and Dorothy Fields.

“They were the crème de la crème of musical theater,” he said. “It was a wonderful experience. I learned a great deal from working with people who were tops in the field.”

Carroll calls “Uncle Vanya” one of the greatest plays of all time.

“It’s surely Chekhov’s best,” he said.

“Like many Shakespearean plays, it can be done with many slants. Director Roy Fluhrer maintains the play’s classic integrity but gives insights to the modern era.”

Carroll, who said he agreed to be in the play “because I was asked and I was available,” met his physician wife, Anne Calhoun, who is related to John C. Calhoun, at a wedding in Greenville.

Motown music comes to life at Centre Stage

lgood@communityjournals.com Centre Stage Theatre’s annual rock show, “Heart and Soul,” is reviving Motown music with a twist.

Ten local artists headline the show, singing and dancing to songs by artists such as Gladys Knight and the Pips, The Temptations, and The Jackson Five, with a rock ’n’ roll flair from a live band, according to a release.

“It’s the kind of music that makes you go, ‘Oh – I remember what I was doing when I heard that song,’” Kimberlee Ferreira, director and choreographer of “Heart and Soul,” said in a phone interview. “It’s music of my generation.”

pher at the Greenville Little Theatre. She said she has been involved in theatre for many years, but her favorite shows to do are concerts.

“The choreography just makes it so much more exciting to watch,” said cast member Jessica Eckenrod, who plays Michael Jackson in one of the segments.

3 films that make an art form of deception Last week I discussed the exaggerated information presented in the first documentary film, “Nanook of the North.” This week I’d like to tell you about three films about notable fakery.

“The Last Broadcast” Directed by Stefan Avalos and Lance Weiler | Available for purchase on Amazon.

This film was made for $900 and shot on a VHS camera. It’s presented in a similar fashion to the “Blair Witch Project,” as a found footage film, although it was released the year before.

It involves two guys who have a public access show and decide to do a live broadcast from the Pine Barrens in New Jersey in hopes of finding evidence that a creature called the Jersey Devil actually exists. Needless to say, things go awry.

The film appears to be an actual documentary about a real case, but it isn’t. Unlike the Blair Witch, which is a myth created by the filmmakers, the Jersey Devil is believed to be real by some people.

Edgar brings the reader to a critical time in the War of Independence. After the fall of Charleston, many thought South Carolina would collapse and lead to the fall of the rest of the colonies. However, Edgar explains that the Battle of Huck’s Defeat turned the tide, leading to successes at better-known battles.

Another aspect of Edgar’s meticulous research is his emphasis on the contributions of women: He includes Martha Robertson Bratton, Elizabeth Hutchinson Jackson (the mother of the nation’s future president) and Jane Black Thomas.

“The American Revolution: A Historical Guidebook” edited by Frances H. Kennedy is a comprehensive sourcebook and intriguing study of the remarkable leaders of the time. The guidebook lists landmarks and geographical places along with a wellresearched focus on nearly 150 of the war’s most significant battles.

From this context, readers are reintroduced to the remarkable individuals who founded our nation and the relevance that their words and struggles have in today’s times. Kennedy’s book includes historical maps and primary documents such as letters from John Adams and George Washington, along with a timeline that offers a comprehensive picture of events before, during and after the war.

“An Honest Liar” Directed by Justin Weinstein | Available on Netflix.

In the 1970s, illusionist Uri Geller was making a name for himself by appearing on “The Tonight Show” and pretending to bend spoons with the power of his mind. This film is about a magician, The Amazing Randi, who successfully unmasked Geller and proved that he was a fraud.

The film is a biography of Randi, whose real name is James Randi, and discusses his career and his life with his partner, José Alvarez. Randi made a career of creating frauds for the purpose of then demonstrating how he did it so as to educate people.

What’s fascinating about the film is that Randi himself was hoodwinked on a very personal level, and he is unaware of this until the filmmakers uncover it.

In 1938 Orson Welles shocked the nation by presenting a radio play of H.G. Wells’ “War of the Worlds.” He presented it as a newscast so as to fool people into thinking Martians were actually invading the Earth.

In 1973, he made the film essay “F for Fake” about frauds and fakery, which includes art forger Elmyr de Hory, who sold over 1,000 forgeries of famous works to art galleries all over the word, and Clifford Irving, who wrote a fictional “autobiography” of Howard Hughes. Welles

Kelly Jo throws curveball with new EP, ‘Songwriting’ VINCENT HARRIS | CONTRIBUTOR

vharris@communityjournals.com When Kelly Jo Ramirez, aka Kelly Jo, takes the stage this Saturday night at Gottrocks, she’ll be throwing Upstate music fans a bit of a curveball.

Any dedicated Greenville music fan will know Kelly Jo from her numerous performances around town and her powerful, passionate voice. But for the first time in several years, she’s begun concentrating on original music, preparing to record and release a new EP of original songs called, aptly enough, “Songwriting.”

Ramirez has always been a popular performer, and has spent most of the last few years playing shows with a multifaceted group called The Kelly Jo Connect.

But they mostly concentrated on covers during her tenure with that group, and she says she now regrets not working on original material.

“We never actually released any product,” she says. “Fans would have to come to our shows to learn our original songs, which became a very humbling experience.”

With the Connect on hiatus since last year, Kelly Jo has been concentrating more on writing than performing, and says her true musical style has started to emerge.

“The songs I was producing before were with one motive: I wanted to get people’s butts out of their seats,” she says. “I wanted to get people moving. And it doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re bad songs, but songs like that don’t have to be as genuine as when you have the motive of, ‘I want to get to the feeling of a song.’ I think I’ve found my niche in pop music with a little Latin threading in there. I think it comes most naturally to me as a songwriter.”

As far as getting a band together and recording these new songs – well, that’s a big part of what this weekend’s show is about.

“This is just an introduction of these

songs to an audience,” she says. “I don’t necessarily want this to be a crowdfunding thing, but I want people to know that this is all coming out of my pocket, and that any help they could give me would be greatly appreciated. I want to capture an audience that will help me fund this EP.”

Kelly Jo’s band for the show will feature Greenville Jazz Collective guitarist Matt Dingledine, singer/guitarist Darby Wilcox, singer/keyboard player Audrey Hamilton, bassist Sam Kruer, drummer Josh Joyner and keyboard player Da’Ryll Searles.

The show is part of an ongoing Local Showcase series organized by John Durham of the Upstate group the LOZ Band.

Over the past year or so, a group centered around the LOZ Band, Kelly Jo and Wilcox has coalesced into a musical collective called Local Green, and the various musicians often perform shows together.

“The family unit is definitely strong, and we’re glad that it’s become evident to people,” Ramirez says. “Especially people that followed us in from our solo careers. We get to cross-pollinate fans, and it’s been a really encouraging atmosphere to be in.”

We meet at Vic’s in downtown Greenville. It’s a little New York-style pizza joint with fauxwood laminate tables (the kind you’d find in a school cafeteria from the early ’90s), well-used ovens on full display, geographically misleading signage that says “Brooklyn, SC,” and a guy named Kevin who has over a decade of experience making pizza in New York. It feels a little grimy – I think they call that “character” – but the tables are clean and the service is quick.

We order a 20-inch pie – half-Margherita, halfSpicy Sausage – to share. On the Margherita side: a thick layer of mozzarella, tomatoes, and fresh, hand-torn basil. On the Spicy Sausage side: a healthy sprinkling of chopped peppers (a 60-40 cayenne-to-habanero ratio, Kevin tells me), red onions, and Italian sausage.

Underpinning it all: a thin crust, crisp on the edges, but with a little bit of chew once you get to the topping-covered center. The slices are massive (40 square inches each, for those keeping score), floppy and hot.

I think the Spicy Sausage is delicious: not too spicy, and you don’t get that rank onion odor after eating a few slices. The Margherita is a bit bland for my taste, but the comparison is probably unfair so close on the heels of the Spicy Sausage. The crust has great presence, and it doesn’t leave me feeling bloated with regret.

There’s a saying about pizza and sex: Even when it’s bad, it’s still pretty good. When it comes to sex, no comment. But as far as pizza goes, I wholeheartedly concur.

Mary Cathryn’s verdict: “Very balanced blend of toppings, cheese and dough, and I am always excited to fold my slices in half.” Will concurs for the most part: “I liked the dough.

Liked the spice levels. Cheese is meh. The basil was nice, but I wanted more.”

It’s hard to get much more out of them – not for lack of things to say, but because it’s a challenge (not to mention rude) to talk when your mouth is stuffed full of pizza. Which, when you think about it, is really all you need to know about Vic’s: The slices are too good to waste time talking.

PROS + Big, floppy slices. + Nice distribution of toppings – not barren, not overloaded. + An honest-to-God New Yorker makes these pizzas. + Time for some pizza math: $25 gets you 2.18 square feet of pie, which means at $11.46 per square foot, it’s the cheapest (and least likely to disappoint) real estate investment you can make.

Local musicians pay tribute to a visionary What can you possibly do in print that would do justice to a man who invented whole chunks of rock ’n’ roll, inspired generations of outcasts and misfits to find themselves through their art, tried on musical genres like outfits and followed his own artistic vision whether anyone was listening or not?

Instead of trying to pay tribute to him myself, I decided to speak with some local musicians about what David Bowie meant to them.

Big Game redux: A tale of supporters and fans of hand gestures.

Most rooters couldn’t find the school they claim to love with a squad of Boy Scouts and a GPS. Fans who do visit limit their time to the stadium, around which they gather for ritualistic feasts before flat-screen altars, charcoal smoke swirling around their heads like the Oracle at Delphi while they opine on play-calling, recruiting and conditioning.

Nothing crystallizes the game like overweight men in canvas chairs talking about how out of shape the players are.

Fans have little interest in academics, except as they pertain to eligibility; nor do they understand the financial bedrock underlying the green turf that supports their desires. They invest only emotion and they desire only victory, both worth less than Lee Corso’s predictions.

Supporters, on the other hand, are people who write checks – big checks building eponymous towers and smaller ones paying tuition, money that teaches children how to backsass their parents using words the latter cannot understand.

The money goes to the colleges who hire the coaches, who recruit the teams, who run onto the field so the fans can cheer. Some fans are supporters, but not all supporters are fans. As one parent expressed it, “I had to write them a five-figure check. You want I should root for them, too?”

Those who pay also pay attention.

The Christmases of my youth were preceded by endless road trips to Florida, followed by even longer drives back, time-space disruptions caused when Alabama lost bowl games.

My father, an Alabama grad, reacted to each loss by throwing luggage (some of it ours) into the station wagon and driving home with whomever was nimble enough to jump in before he shifted into second. (Note to millennials: Station wagons were great iron beasts, herds of which once blackened the highways of America.)

For eight years in a row, Alabama came up short. That’s eight treks, 105 road hours, and 5,184 miles of highway punctuated by alligator farms, glassbottom boats, the Mermaids of Weeki Wachee, and my father’s cries of “Why, Bear, why?”

Pain is educational: I learned to be an Alabama fan.

Streaks end. Alabama started winning and (much later) I found a girl who could tolerate me. A Clemson girl.

We’ve now sent two kids to Clemson.

I am an Alabama fan, but I’m also a Clemson supporter.

Fans and supporters are part of the cavalcade of college football – players, coaches, parents, cheerleaders, bands, students and the Aflac duck – not to mention the media, who before each game expound, predict, adumbrate and explain, all with the accuracy of cannabis-fueled monkeys throwing darts at a bulletin board.

Back to the fans, a diverse gallimaufry sharing but a single trait: rooting for the team. This they mostly do by donning Life Saver-hued outfits reminiscent of 1970s cop show pimps. Fandom has no prerequisites, no tests, no minimum proficiencies. It takes less prep to be a fan than to be a licensed driver, a subject for at least three more columns and a like number

tions no one wants to answer, like “Who’s going to pay for this?”

It’s now a new season and another sport, one with a big game in November. As with football, the outcome depends on fans and supporters, or as they’re known on Election Day, voters and taxpayers.
