Red Square is a large open square in the center of Moscow. It is located in front of the Kremlin's western wall. The square is fenced by the State Historical Museum building, the GUM building, and St. Basil Cathedral. For many centuries Red Square has served as the place for important historical events. Red Square ensemble formation was closely connected to the Soviet period of Russian history, especially after Mausoleum of Vladimir Lenin was put up on here in 1924. Nowadays it is a place for parades, star-group concerts in Summer and the ice-skating in the Winter-time. The main religious attraction of Moscow is the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour. It was dedicated to Russia's victory over Napoleon in Moscow. The first Cathedral of Christ the Savior existed 44 years. Then Iosif Stalin ordered to disrupt the temple and construct the so called “Soviet Palace” instead - a giant tower topped with the statue of Vladimir Lenin. However, the World War II interrupted the plans. On the spot a swimming-pool was built. It has existed for 30 years till the authorities decided to rebuild the original Cathedral . During the years 1995-2000. it was totally reconstructed and again became a symbol of the city.
