Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Festival Hue in April 2012 in Hue City, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said that the tourism sector should welcome more than 10 million international travelers, service 48 million domestic tourists, create three million jobs and contribute 7% of the country’s gross domestic product by 2020.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam said more foreign airlines are going to expand their service in Vietnam, with Silk Air of Singapore eyeing a route to Hanoi in addition to its current service to Da Nang in central Vietnam. While Laos Airlines makes connections from Pakse to Danang three times per week at the new international Danang airport.

Vietnam’s tourism development strategy for the next decade is to enhance the professionalism, quality and efficiency of the Vietnamese travel industry. The target projections in the national tourism strategy are seen as obtainable given what the industry achieved in 2011. Last year, the industry serviced more than six million international visitors and 30 million local tourists, and registered earnings of VND130 trillion (some US$6.25 billion), and the number of tourists’ increases on average 20% year after year.

In late March 2012, United Airlines and Japan's All Nippon Airways announced their agreement to cooperate in an effort to open the Vietnam-US route as of April 1, with flights transiting in Hong Kong, Japan or both. On March 23, 2012 the Filipino airline Cebu Pacific opened two weekly flights between Manila and Hanoi. The first ever direct flights from Hanoi and HCM City to London three times per week will bring UK travelers to the region, increasing arrivals by 30%.

The tourism industry is looking to 6.5 million international arrivals, 32 million domestic travelers and revenue of VND150 trillion in 2012. The already approved tourism development strategy envisages the number of international arrivals will be 7-7.5 million, domestic travelers 36-37 million, revenue of US$10-11 billion by 2015, and the tourism sector will contribute 5.56% of the country’s GDP by that year. hoTels The number of hotel rooms is expected to reach 390,000 with 30-35% being three to five-star rooms by 2015, and 580,000 rooms with 35-40% rated as three to five-star rooms by 2020. Once perceived as a budget to mid-range destination, Vietnam has become more uscale in recent years. A development reflected in the growing number of luxury hotels and resorts across the country. Ha Nguyen, Operations Executive, Luxury Travel Ltd. “Luxury travelers have particular requirements and are people with time and money for their holidays. They are usually FITs and not group travelers, seek qualitative experiences and demand personal and confidential service. They often have requirements that, to the average person, seem absurd, but which should be evaluated in relation to the amounts spent for their acquisition. Today’s luxury traveler is not only sharp, experienced, informed, welltraveled and adventurous, but also has an eye for value-for-money. He is often much younger than not so long ago. Beyond these common characteristics, luxury travelers are not homogeneous with regard to their income and wealth, nor with regard to their psychographic profile.”

Ha Van Hiep, Luxury Travel Ltd Danang. “Luxury travelers are seeking out ways to stay active and healthy on the road, carving out time for bike rides, hiking, and water sports. Clients want to go to places where they have plenty of options to take day trips and enjoy active excursions such as trekking, kayaking to diving. We also see increased lengths of stay and multiple room bookings to accommodate multi-generational travel. Bespoke itineraries with a sense of place are very trendy now, and travelers always seek out what’s next and new in exotic destinations.”

Brenda Sunoo, US. Overseas Representative, Luxury Travel Ltd USA “We are specialists in the art of travel, serves today’s most sophisticated travelers, in privately guided and fully customized holidays led by native-born, multilingual travel professionals. n estimated 2.8 million tourists visited the country in 2011 and Cambodia’s government is in talks with various airlines to open new routes to its capital, as part of a strategic plan to boost tourist arrivals. Further, Cambodian developers are betting that casinos can make the tiny Southeast Asian country a bigger draw for high-spending tourists. Cambodia's best-known casino, Naga World in Phnom Penh, is adding 220 rooms to its current total of about 500. It is adding as many as 30 new gambling tables to its total of 131 and around 275 new slot machines. The best time to visit the Kingdom is the cool season from November to February There are four annual seasons: cool and dry between November and February; hot and dry between March and May; hot and wet between June and August; and cool and wet between September and early November. The best time to visit is the cool season, when the weather usually benefits from a pleasant dry heat and the countryside is still green from the rains. As February turns into March, the heat begins to build until April and May, when it can be quite oppressive and uncomfortable. In May and June, the rains come and bring a measure of relief. It rarely rains all day, and mostly it will rain for an hour or two in the afternoon or evening. By early September, the heat begins to dissipate and the evenings are cooler. Through October, the frequency of the showers slows and the humidity starts to lower. Although the wet season is low season for tourism throughout most of the region, visiting at that time does have its advantages. It is when the Angkor complex is at its most beautiful, the vegetation is lush, and the crowds are relatively thin. Visas

top highlightS The Plain oF Jars Scattered in groups across the undulating countryside in northern Laos's xieng Khuang province, there are hundreds of ancient stone cylinders whose origins and purpose is still something of a mystery. This massive site also bears the scars of a tragic time in the country’s history, what's become known as the Secret War. While the Vietnam War dominated news headlines in the 1960s and 1970s, the US showered Laos with more missiles than it dumped on Germany and Japan combined during World War II, as part of Washington's campaign to halt the spread of communism through Indochina. As many as 450,000 people in Laos lost their lives, while 600,000 died in Cambodia. The nine-year campaign wiped out countless villages and left much of the landscape irretrievably damaged. There are five major sites, but only sites 1, 2 and 3 are considered to be reasonably free of UxO (unexploded ordnance), yet it always important to stick to the footpaths. The 4000 islands Laos is known for its laid-back vibe, but this is especially true in the southern portion of the country, where a visit to Si Phan Don (4000 Islands) will have you slowing down considerably. The scenic, 50km long stretch of the Mekong is home to countless islands and islets (sand bars included)), although this is only

true during the months between monsoons, when the waters recede. During the rainy season, the river widens to as much as 14km. The largest of the permanent islands are inhabited year round and their tranquil villages are largely self-sufficient and tourism is only starting to be developed here. Islands like Don Khong boast the remnants of the French colonial era, including an old pier and railway station, as well as the spectacular Li Phi Falls. The region also has mighty rapids and the chance to spot the elusive Irrawaddy dolphin in the Mekong. WaT PhU This World Heritage listed ancient temple complex is even older than Angkor Wat and sits in a scenically splendid location. It is on a peaceful hillside with views out over the Mekong, not far from the 4000 Islands. Wat Phu was the most important Hindu sanctuary of the Khmer Empire between the 9th and 13th centuries. While restoration is being done to restore the temple complex, much of it is remarkably intact, with much detail to behold, such as sacrificial stones, ornate carvings and cleansing pools. The bolaVen PlaTeaU Green all year round and cooler than the rest of Laos, the Bolaven Plateau is located in an ancient volcano that erupted millions of years ago. It covers 50km of Southern Laos's most vegetated area, home to national parks, waterfalls and

dense jungle, as well as remote hill tribes. The small and charming town of Paksong, located 1300 metres above sea level, is the heart of the plateau and it's also known as the coffee capital of Laos which has ideal growing conditions. A trip higher up into the hills will bring you to the area's small coffee farms where you can take a tour of a few farms and sample a freshly brewed cup. The most picturesque waterfall in the Bolaven Plateau is the Tat Fane Waterfall, which is over 100 metres in height. Hiking into the jungle and finding its hidden waterfalls is also a must, for anyone with a spirit of adventure. lUang naM Tha This town in northern Laos isn't yet on the agenda of most tourists when it comes to itineraries, but the eco-trekking opportunities in the area surrounding it are getting the attention of travelers. The 222,400 hectare Nam Ha Protected Area is a place of enchanting evergreen forests, woodlands and rivers, with an array of wildlife including many species of birds. We offer treks in different areas of the park, with some including an overnight stay in a local village. Other ways to experience this pristine wilderness include river rafting, kayaking and mountain biking. The town of Luang Nam Tha itself is an enjoyable place to explore, with its surrounding rich rice paddies and ethnically diverse villages.

The country is gearing up for an actionpacked year ahead, banking on three major events to raise its profile among international tourists. Four key provinces (Luang Prabang, Vientiane, Savannakhet and Champasak) will be the recipients of infrastructure investments, which include new hotels, airports, roads and bridges across the Mekong River, easing travel to neighboring Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand. A new convention centre is also under construction in Vientiane and is expected to be completed at the end of 2012. Also, new airlines have expressed interest in launching flights to Vientiane, such as German charter carrier Condor and Jin Air, which already operates charters from South Korea, but is intending to have regularly scheduled services. Lao Central Airlines ( takes off. Attapeu Airport in the South Laos opens. Laos Airlines was also able to deploy its new Airbus A320s on its thrice-weekly Singapore-Vientiane flights launched in November 2011. Also, several hotels have been opened in Luang Prabang, such as xieng Thong Palace, Luang xay Residence, Hotel de la Paix. the country guiDe When is The besT TiMe To VisiT Thailand? It very much depends on each individual traveler's priorities. Some might want nothing but sunshine and beaches with little worry for cost and head there during the high season. Others on a tighter budget, or simply wishing to avoid the crowds, might prefer to go during the rainy season. With lots of special hotel deals on offer, it’s possible to get luxury accommodations at very low prices. As there is no simple answer to the question, the following calendar will hopefully help you decide which month would best suit you. JanUary To MarCh This is the most popular (and therefore the most expensive) time to visit Thailand. Humidity is at its lowest for the year and temperatures are slightly lower than normal, averaging around 32° from Bangkok southwards. In the north, the temperature can drop much lower overnight but during daylight, hot sunny days are the norm. If you wish to go there at this time of year then booking your accommodations and flights at least three months ahead is advisable to be sure you get the lowest air fares and widest choice of rooms. In the most popular destinations such as Phuket it is common for the best hotels to be fully booked several months in advance. If you do leave it to the last minute, then you can usually still find somewhere decent to stay but it is more difficult and choices can be limited. January being the peak-month of the year, hotels often charge more than double the rates they do at other times, though better value is possible in February and more so in March . The other downside for some people, will be the crowded streets and nightlife venues, plus the increased traffic, which in some places makes simple things like crossing a road quite a chore. aPril This is the last month before the rainy season starts, and often the hottest month of the year. It is also the month of "Songkran" festivals, where Thai citizens celebrate their new year by enthusiastically dousing each other (and tourists) with cold water. There is nothing like this anywhere else in the world, and as it attracts large numbers of tourists, expect big crowds and increased prices. For most visitors, it's a time of incredible fun, but if you are not prepared to take part, then be prepared to stay in your hotel room all day as you will not get far along the street before you are completely soaked. You have been warned! May To aUgUsT These are usually the more pleasant months of the rainy season. The humidity will creep up, the temperature will stabilize at around 35° C. and rain will likely be a daily event. However, a common pattern can be a mixed cloudy /sunny day with an intense rain storm that lasts for a couple of hours in the late afternoon, so depending on your luck, it’s still possible to get a good suntan. With the high season crowds absent, this can be a wonderfully relaxing time to visit. Bargains abound everywhere, from hotels offering special deals, to rock bottom prices in the shopping markets. sePTeMber and oCTober The wettest months are from September to October with very high humidity. Although you can still catch some nice weather, the only real advantage to choosing these months would be that you can get very nice accommodations at extraordinary prices. noVeMber and deCeMber This is the start of the high season, and the rains should clear up. The humidity level should go down, but it can't be guaranteed to work out that way, so an element of luck applies. Still, it's a pretty safe bet that you will get good patches of sunshine and calm clear days. Tourism numbers will increase, but are still far below January and February. These months can offer the best of both worlds, with a very pleasant climate, moderate numbers of tourists and good prices. Thailand Visa A tourist visa can be used to stay in Thailand for more than 30 days and up to 60 days and can be extended by 30 days at the nearest immigration office. A tourist visa is needed when a person plans to stay in Thailand for tourism purposes longer than is allowed when entering under the visa exemption, or if a person is from a country that has no visa exemption agreements with Thailand. The Thai government allows a tourist visa for 41 nationalities to enter the country without a prearranged visa(check on The visa on arrival is valid for 30 days. If you want to stay longer in the country, you need to ask for a visa in your country at the embassy of Thailand.

uch like its neighbor Thailand, Myanmar has much more to offer outside of its capital city, Yangon. A country with a rich history and culture, Myanmar now has a host of options for the luxury traveler wanting to explore its archaeological wonders, cruise the great Ayeyarwaddy River, or relax on pristine white sand beaches. Myanmar is the cool new place for savvy travelers who want to be the first to discover new destinations. History buffs will be well aware of the many cultural relics found in Myanmar. Known as the ‘Land of a Million Temples’, the country’s strong Buddhist tradition and history can be explored in hundreds of pagodas, stupas and monasteries, particularly in Mandalay (the cultural capital) and Bagan. Mandalay, Burma’s second largest city was the last royal capital and is rich in monasteries, architecture, crafts, food, and various modes of transport. Lying on the Ayerwaddy River it is awash with monks, markets, people and goods with

everything from jade markets to football games in monasteries to age old palaces to see. Founded as a kingdom in 1044, Bagan is the archaeological crown of Myanmar. Twice a day - just before sunrise and sunset - Balloon over Bagan is a unique experience, giving visitors an incredible bird’s eye view of ancient pagodas, 11th century kingdom ruins and the mighty Ayeyarwaddy River from, you guessed it, a hot air balloon. Further south on the Arakan Coast lie the 15th century ruins of Mrauk-U, once the capital of the Rhakine Kingdom. This rarely - travelled destination is accessible only by boat along the Kaladan River and represents an exciting alternative (or supplement) to Bagan for historical and architectural enthusiasts. Those keen for a slice of serenity will appreciate a visit to Lake Inle, Heho, which the modern world has yet to claim within its grasp. Roughly 7,000 people live in hundreds of small villages bordering the

lake, which is still fished by rowboat fishermen. A boat trip on the lake or a bicycle ride through surrounding villages will leave you much less stressed than if you had actually built a time machine and travelled back to a simpler time. On the other hand, travelers with an urge to relax with a touch of luxury will be tempted to while away the hours at the beachfront Amazing Ngapali Resort in Zee Phyu Gone. Its 40 rooms are decked out in traditional wood and cane décor and they all boast sea views for those who, for whatever reason, can resist lounging in the coconut groves or just jumping in to Ngapali Beach. For re-luxe-ers who prefer changing scenery, the Road to Mandalay cruise between Mandalay and Bagan lets you enjoy the passing riverside landscapes from the comfort of a swimming pool, sun deck or observation lounge. It has three different cabin types for 110 passengers, all fitted with air conditioning, en suites, satellite TV and telephone.

yanmar’s gradual emergence from political isolation is not only being watched keenly by political pundits, but also by travelers looking for a luxury destination off the beaten track. A far-sighted new government in Myanmar has revealed that it is studying the implementation of several tourist-friendly changes in the areas of hotel development, air access and visas. At the World Economic Forum in Davos in January 2012, two large hoteliers, Starwood Hotels & Resorts (which runs chains such as Westin, Sheraton and Le Meridien) and Marriott International (which owns luxury hotel brand Ritz Carlton) both expressed an interest to build hotels in Myanmar, Southeast Asia's second largest country after Indonesia.

of 2013, in preparation for the foreign visitors expected to attend the 27th Southeast Asian Games. It is little wonder that hoteliers and travel agencies alike are hungry to pounce on newly available opportunities. Myanmar, after all, has been spared the steroidal development that has afflicted most of its Southeast Asian neighbors, and so retains untouched, with pure white beaches, towering mountains and impressive Buddhist architecture, such as the iconic Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon and the 4,000 pagodas and stupas scattered across Bagan. Travelling here is safe, and the people are helpful, especially in the outskirts. The only hassle may be the currency, but the first ATM has been installed in Yangon. The U.S. dollar is the currency of choice, but

your notes must be crisp and without markings. The banks are extremely particular about this and will not accept folded, scribbled or shabby notes. Today it is easier to do money exchange in others currencies in the major destinations in Myanmar. The UK, US, Australia, Canada, EU have suspended sanctions against Myanmar and the UN will lift the embargo in the very near future in the wake of reforms in this Southeast Asian nation. Vietnam Airlines provides connections three times per week from Hanoi and HCM City to Yangon, making Myanmar more accessible to travelers. ANA is also resuming flights to Myanmar soon. Myanmar is trying to attract more international airlines to fly to the country, and with open sky policies in Asean, more airlines will fly to Myanmar in the near future. MAI is expanding its networks

What’s NeW ? This will bring a long needed touch of travel glamour to the reclusive country, which currently only has Asian-based hotel chains such as the Shangri-La Group (which runs Traders Hotel), Singapore's Sedona Hotels International, and GHM Luxury Hotels, a Burmese company that owns the Strand in the commercial former capital, Yangon. Hailed by everyone in the Western press (from CNN to Lonely Planet to Travel & Leisure magazine) as one of the world's “in” places to visit, Myanmar finds its tourism industry ready to increase exponentially in the next three years, if its infrastructure can match the demand. The few five-star hotels outside Yangon are, for the moment, scattered in tourist centres and beach resorts such as Ngapali, Mandalay, Bagan and Inle Lake. Myanmar’s Ministry of Hotels and Tourism intends to implement an updated star rating system for hotels in the country. The country now has 691 licensed hotels, with a total of 23,454 rooms. Increases in business and leisure travel are expected to raise rates as the country looks for foreign investments. Myanmar expects 50 new hotels will open across the country ahead

and offers connections between Yangon and the famous Angkor Temples three times per week. At present, MAI has direct flight linking Yangon with Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Gaya. Myanmar introduced an e-visa system beginning in April 2012, check it out here: system will allow international visitors to apply for a visa from anywhere via the Internet, before visiting Myanmar. Travelers will no longer need to go to a Myanmar embassy to apply for a visa. Travelers can not only fly from Mandalay to Chiang Mai, but can now cross borders from Myanmar to Thailand. However, tourists wanting to enter Myanmar by land currently face some restrictions. Only a handful of border crossings are open to foreigners and a regulation introduced in mid-2011 requires tourists to enter and exit at the same checkpoint. Opening Myanmar will let travelers discover one of the most fabulous destinations in the region, which is still completely unspoiled. With its rich cultures, amazing natural and historical heritage, its mountains and its coastline, Myanmar has all the ingredients to turn into a major world destination.

You can visit Myanmar all the year round but the best time to come is between October and February as the weather during this period is neither too hot nor wet. Visiting Myanmar during the monsoon season from June to September, the climate in central Myanmar (Bagan, Mandalay, Hsipaw, Kalaw, Inle Lake) is similar to Northern Thailand. This means refreshing rain from June to September. The rest of the day the weather is clear. It is always comfortably warm (but not as hot as MarchApril). There are fewer tourists (so you have a much better choice of hotel rooms). June to September is cheaper and best of all, Myanmar is at its best – green and refreshing (less dusty and dry than in the winter here).
