Excursion tips

The picturesque island with its old town is unique, as well as its cultural diversity, the many fresh regional delights and the practically endless choice of things to do.

Lindau is an ideal starting point for varied excursions. Distances are short and the regional attractions can be easily visited by bus, train, ship and bicycle.

Classical concerts, international water sport events and holidays offering traditional or culinary expeditions: Lindau‘s calendar of events is filled with cultural highlights, tradition and lifestyle.

Southern ambience

ATMOSPHERIC OLD TOWN Bavaria, in its south-west corner, has such an Italian touch. A truly southern atmosphere, just perfect for sauntering through the picturesque narrow streets prevails in Lindau, particularly when the sun bathes the old town in soft pastel colours and makes the lake glitter on balmy summer evenings.

The Old Town Hall

Mang Tower

St. Peter’s Church

The Old Town Hall is one of the most significant places of interest at the heart of the island. This splendid building was built between 1422 and 1436 and it’s the most prestigious house in Maximilian Street.

The Mang Tower with its square foundation was erected at the end of the 12th century and served as a lighthouse being the end point of the town wall. Its strikingly pretty and colourful roof dates back to the 19th century.

It was built more than 1,000 years ago and is the oldest church in Lindau as well as one of the oldest churches anywhere on Lake Constance. The “Lindauer Passion” mural paintings by Hans Holbein the Elder are especially worth seeing.

Green paradise

THE GARDEN TOWN It is astonishing how many green spaces and parks can be found on the island with its limited area. The mainland offers plenty of opportunities for relaxation, recreation and lengthy walks with rambling lakeside areas and parks.

Magnificent villas

Juicy, crispy and healthy

Green oasis

Nearly 30 noteworthy villas in different architectural styles are strung along the shoreline, all bearing melodious names such as Villa Leuchtenberg and Villa Lindenhof, Villa Toscana and Villa Wacker, or, preserved in its original state, Villa Elena.

The symbiosis of sun, fertile earth and seasonl substantial changes in temperature makes the region of Lake Constance a famed fruit-growing area and offers a wide range of delightful varieties.

In spring, the fruit plantations and orchards are in full blossom, in summer, a refreshing breeze comes off the lake, in autumn, the region is draped in warm earth tones, while in winter the lake works as a heat accumulator.

Cultural diversity

“Haus zum Cavazzen”

Lindau’s puppet opera

The towns’ art collections have been housed in one of the most beautiful baroque town residences, since 1930. A special gem is the Mediterranean inner courtyard which invites to stay in summer.

The “friedensräume”, or Peace Rooms, in Villa Lindenhof are more than just a museum. It is an interactive forum which invites visitors to understand peace themes through vision, hearing and touch.

Lindau’s puppet opera is a special highlight of puppeteering. Today it is the only puppet stage in Germany to exclusively put on musical theatrical performances and is aimed to an adult audience.
