MMA seniors Emma Lynch of Haverford and Nadia Carlino of Haverford dance for a cause and remind us that “Peace Begins with Mercy.”

MMA event leaders Maida Panepacker of Havertown, Alay'na DiSanto of Philadelphia, and Mairead Collins of Havertown, enjoy the mixer and some of the photo booth props that reflects MMA’s school year, 1960s inspired theme: “Peace Begins with Mercy.”

he MMA community has been involved in “The Mercy Girl Effect,” a project combining the efforts of Mercy schools across the nation, for several years. Together, a group of Mercy-sponsored schools collaborate to improve the quality of life for females in developing nations with a special emphasis on girls and education. In recent years, the MMA students helped to raise money to build a library in Kenya and schools in Cambodia and South Sudan. This year, students focused their fundraising efforts to fund housing for refugees in Nigeria. Sisters of Mercy are currently ensconced with more than 1,000 women and children who were forced out of their homes and had to relocate to the grounds of a local church. The goal was to raise money to build hut-houses for these families. Once the children have housing, they get an address and are then eligible to enroll at the local school. Starting Monday, March 13, daily fundraising activities took place at MMA, culminating on Friday, March 17 with “Night for Nigeria” – a dance mixer held with St. Joseph’s Prep. MMA students raised more than $10,000 for this years initiative.
