Information

I N F O R M AT I O N

In Detail This guide is organized by recreation program category. Once you have selected a recreation program of interest, please refer to the registration details below the general description. Some courses fill up quickly, so be sure to register promptly. “Summer Splash” is produced by the City of Orillia Parks, Recreation and Culture Department and is printed and distributed by the Orillia Packet & Times. Department staff have worked hard to ensure this guide is accurate. However, due to the seasonal format we follow, changes might occur after we have gone to press. Additional copies of this brochure are available from the Parks, Recreation and Culture office at 50 Andrew St. South, Suite 300, Orillia or view the online version at orillia.ca.

First Come - First Served Submission of a registration form does not guarantee a place in the recreation program. All registrations will be processed in the order they are received. Please note: online and touch-tone telephone registrations take place 24/7. Registrations are not confirmed until you receive a receipt. If a registration form is received by the office prior to the registration start date, it will be processed, as time allows, starting on the applicable registration date.

Non-City Resident Policy All recreation programs have a rate for City of Orillia residents and a rate for non-residents. A non-resident is defined as anyone who does not pay taxes directly to the City of Orillia. The recreation programs offered by the Parks, Recreation and Culture Department are subsidized by municipal taxes, so we keep the cost as low as possible for those who already contribute to the municipal tax base. Twenty five percent will be added to the registration costs of non-residents. The Parks, Recreation and Culture Department reserves the right to request proof of residency.

Prorating of Recreation Program Fees Parks, Recreation and Culture does not prorate fees for late registration of recreation programs.

HST HST is not included in the pricing shown and is only charged on recreation programs for adults.

NSF Cheques The City of Orillia charges an administration fee of $31.00 for each NSF cheque received.

www.orillia.ca or 705-325-4SUN (4786)

Waiting Lists Once a class is filled, interested registrants will be placed on a waiting list in the order the registration is received. It is recommended to go on the waiting list as we endeavour to accommodate people by expanding the class size or creating an additional class.

Be An Early Bird! Register for camp now and get 5% off before May 5, 2014!

Camp Payment Plans Pay in easy monthly installments. A $25.00 deposit per child/per camp is required to hold your child’s spot in camp, then post-dated cheques must be submitted for future payment. For those camps taking place in July the cheque must be dated no later than June 1st and for those camps taking place in August the cheque must be dated no later than July 1st. This payment plan is only available by registering at the City Centre.

Photographs / Video Unless the participant or guardian indicates otherwise, Parks, Recreation and Culture will assume permission for pictures to be taken during recreation programs to be used to promote recreation.

Personal Information Personal information is collected in accordance with the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, R.S.O. 1990, c.M. 56 under the authority of the Municipal Act 2001, S.O. 2001, c 25 and will be used by the City of Orillia Parks, Recreation and Culture Department for the operation of recreation programs. Inquiries about the collection or use of this information should be directed to the City’s Freedom of Information Co-ordinator.

Class Postponement / Cancellations If it is necessary to cancel a class due to inclement weather, school board cancellations, pool closures, instructor illness, etc. every attempt will be made to re-schedule the class. However, if the class cannot be re-scheduled, a pro-rated refund will be issued. The Parks, Recreation and Culture Department reserves the right to withdraw, postpone, cancel or combine classes, to limit/increase registration or change course locations at any time.

Refunds A full refund will be issued prior to the start of an activity, only: • When an activity is cancelled by the Parks, Recreation and Culture Department. • When the date, time, or location of the recreation program is changed by the Parks, Recreation and Culture Department and prohibits attendance. Medical refund requests must be accompanied by a doctor’s certificate. It will only be processed up to the half-way point of any recreation program or camp. Besides medical reasons, absolutely no refunds will be given after the half-way point. The refund will be pro-rated based on the number of classes left in the recreation program or camp at the time the request is received, regardless of the date the registrant stopped attending the recreation program or camp. All refunds will be assessed an administrative fee of 10%. No other refunds, changes or transfers will be issued after the half-way point except for medical reasons. The amount to be refunded can be left “on account” and may be used for a future payment. Due to the Credit Card cardholder agreement, payments made by Credit Card will only be refunded back to the same Credit Card account. Refunds will never be issued by cheque - only by cash, debit or credit card.

Transfers Transfers from one course to another are permitted up to five business days prior to the start of the recreation program. In the case of swimming lessons, transfers are permitted after the first lesson, and only if there is space, upon approval of the Parks, Recreation and Culture Department. All transfers will be subject to a minimum $3.00 transfer fee.

Parent & Tot 2

13M-24M

Parent & Tot 3

2Y-3Y

Spend quality time with your child and have fun while learning to socialize through the following skills: jump entry, entry from sitting, blowing bubbles, attempt to recover object from bottom, under water passes from instructor to parent.

Preschool Prep

3Y-5Y

Unsure if your preschooler is ready to go it alone? Preschool prep offers the same content as Preschool 1 but allows the parents to participate for as many classes as your preschooler needs to feel comfortable on their own. Parent participation is required.

Preschool 1

3Y-5Y

These preschoolers will have fun learning to get in and out of the water. We will help them jump into chest deep water. They will try floats on their front and back, and glides on their back while wearing a PFD. They will learn to get their face wet and blow bubbles underwater.

Preschool 2

3Y-5Y

These preschoolers learn to jump into chest deep water by themselves, and get in and get out wearing a PFD. They will submerge and exhale underwater. They will glide on their front and back while wearing a Personal Flotation Device (PFD).

Preschool 3

3Y-5Y

Preschool 4

3Y-5Y

Advanced preschoolers will learn to do solo jumps into deeper water and get out by themselves. They will do side roll entries and open their eyes underwater. They will master a short (3–5 m) swim on their front and gliding and kicking on their side.

Preschool 5

3Y-5Y

These youngsters get more adventuresome with a forward roll entry wearing a PFD and holding their breath underwater for up to 10 sec. They will work on longer front and back crawl swims, interval training and get a giggle out of whip kick.

6Y-12Y

These beginners will become comfortable jumping into water with and without a Personal Flotation Device. They’ll learn to open their eyes, exhale and hold their breath underwater. They’ll work on floats, glides and kicking through the water on their front and back.

Swimmer 2 - Shallow

6Y-12Y

This is a shallow water class. Participants will jump into chest deep water, front and back float (3-5 sec), surface support (10 sec) , recover an object in shallow water, submerge and hold their breath (5 sec), kick with an aid on their front, back (5m), vertical whip kick (5 sec) and complete front and back crawl (10m).

Swimmer 2 - Deep Water

6Y-12Y

This is a deep water class. Participants will jump into deep water, enter sideways wearing PFD, front and back float (10 sec), surface support (20 sec) , recover an object in chest deep water, submerge and hold their breath (10 sec), kick with an aid on their front, back (10m), vertical whip kick (10 sec) and complete front and back crawl (15m).

Swimmer 3

6Y-12Y

Swimmers will complete the Canadian Swim to Survive® Standard. They’ll work on 10–15m of front crawl, back crawl and whip kick and flutter kick interval training up to 4 x 25m.

Swimmer 4

6Y-12Y

These intermediate swimmers will swim 5m underwater and lengths of front, back crawl, whip kick, and breaststroke arms with breathing. They’ll cap it all off with front crawl sprints over 25m and 4 x 25m front or back crawl interval training.

Swimmer 5

6Y-12Y

Swimmers will refine their front and back crawl over 50m swims of each, and breaststroke over 15–25m. Then they’ll pick up the pace in 25m sprints and two interval training bouts: 4 x 50m front or back crawl; and 4 x 10–15m breaststroke.

Swimmer 6

6Y-12Y

These advanced swimmers will rise to the challenge of sophisticated aquatic skills including stride entries, compact jumps and lifesaving kicks like eggbeater and scissor kick. They’ll develop strength and power in head-up breaststroke sprints over 25m. They’ll easily swim lengths of front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke, and they will complete a 300m workout.

www.orillia.ca or 705-325-4SUN (4786)

These youngsters will try both jumping and a side roll into deep water while wearing a PFD. They will recover objects from the bottom in waist-deep water. They will work on kicking and gliding through the water on their front and back.

WELCOME TO cAMP Things You Need To Know

Age Range for Camps

The City of Orillia Parks, Recreation and Culture Department is proud to offer our dynamic day camps. We strive to help you in your quest to find the perfect activities to keep your child busy in a fun, safe, educational and exciting environment.

Each camp has specific age ranges to facilitate quality programming. Participants must turn the specified age by the end of the summer in order to be qualified to register for the specific camp. Camp supervisors take age differences into account when programming camp activities.

Quality Supervision

Location, Location, Location

Regular camp ratio is 1:10 | Pre-school camp ratio is 1:8

Please note that locations are subject to change. Staff may walk the children to other locations in the city, including the beach or park. Drop off/pick up locations may also change, however parents will be notified of any location changes. In the case of location change due to inclement weather, campers may be bused to a safe place.

Our camp ratios are also supplemented with support from responsible leadership volunteers.

Our Leaders • Value children, treat them with respect. • Create environments that nurture healthy development. • Are committed to your child’s safety and well-being. • All receive training in High Five Principles of Healthy Child Development, possess Standard First Aid and CPR-C, and have completed a vulnerable sectors check.

Monday is Mail Day! On the first day of camp, parents/guardians will be given a weekly newsletter outlining the activities for the week, including special themes, trips or outings. All information will also be available at the camp location’s welcome table.

Photo Release Photographs of participants may be taken at any time for promotional purposes. If you do not wish to have your child’s photo/name used, please call 705-329-7251.

CAMPS

Medical Information & Medicines at Camp Please ensure the medical section of the Camper Information Form is fully completed, and that everything is up to date with current doctor’s name and an emergency contact that can be reached during the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Campers requiring medication at camp need to have a Medication Release Form signed. Medication must be stored in original containers only and camp staff will keep them in a secure location. Medication Release Forms will be available during sign in.

Program Conduct and Goals

www.orillia.ca or 705-325-4SUN (4786)

We aim to provide enjoyable activities in a safe and positive environment. We expect all campers to be courteous and respectful to all participants and staff; use non-offensive language at all times; support and appreciate each other; solve problems in a fair and peaceful manner; include others in their activities; and play without bullying or teasing others.

Parent Handbook

new

The Parent Handbook will outline program information and expectations. Please review and ensure that your child is aware of what is expected of them, other participants and staff. Hard copies will be available at the City Centre or online at orillia.ca.

Lunches should be Nut-Free! Pack a litterless lunch, snacks and drinks daily. We suggest a reusable water bottle (no glass please) so children can fuel up and have the energy to go, go, go! Due to the number of nut related allergies, peanut butter, nuts and any food that contains nut by-products will not be allowed at camp. Please pack your lunches with care.

CAMP BACKPACK CHECK LIST Remember, your children are at camp. Their clothes should be comfortable and able to withstand the rigors of camp life! Please ensure that everything your child brings to camp, including clothing, is fully labelled with their full name. All electronic devices are not permitted at camp. Parks, Recreation and Culture is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Please do not send valuables to camp.

Things to Bring toCamp: Nutritious lunch and drinks Additional snacks for morning and afternoon Proper outdoor attire (indoor running shoes, no flip flops) Extra change of clothes (just in case) Sunscreen and bug spray Bathing suit, towel and an extra t-shirt on days with high UV index

Extended care is available from: 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The fee for this service is $15.00 per week or $7.50 per week for half-day camps.

Extreme Heat Days Not all camp locations have access to air conditioning. Staff will ensure children are in shaded areas, have access to water and will focus on low intensity games and activities on extreme heat days.

YOUth Decide

11Y- 16Y

Calling all Youth! In Partnership with the Orillia Youth Centre, youth help design their own camp experience! Tired of being told what to do? Work as a team, with the coordinator, to establish your schedule, activities and out trips. The catch? Each day must consist of a new sport, life skill, leadership skill, and team building activity. This is a great opportunity for youth to become leaders in their own community.
