Chris Kemper and Molly Fortune Having most recently lived in Atlanta, GA, Chris Kemper and Molly Fortune are enjoying the quality of life that the City of Newberry has restored to their family. Molly says, “I can walk to work, the kids (Ellis and Mafra) can ride their bikes to the ice cream shop, and we can sit on our front porch and talk to neighbors.� Molly Fortune is the Executive Director of the Newberry Opera House.

John and Katherine Lake John and Katherine Lake had a desire to return to their roots and settle in a small town in South Carolina. John wanted a vibrant, friendly community for his dental practice. Newberry was at the top of their list because it offers the quintessential American small town experience but also the convenience to bigger cities.

or more than 160 years, Newberry College has been preparing students for successful careers and meaningful lives. Building on the Lutheran liberal arts tradition, Newberry prepares students to be engaged and informed citizens, ethical servant-leaders and well-rounded individuals ready to fulfill their vocational calling. Newberry College students, faculty and staff regularly partner with local schools, nonprofit organizations and area businesses to provide a variety of mutually beneficial support through a wide range of service-learning projects, volunteerism and philanthropic sponsorships. The College has forged strong relationships with the City of Newberry, area businesses and industry leaders to explore opportunities to partner on new ventures. “Newberry College strives to be a good neighbor,” said Newberry College president Maurice Scherrens. “We want to be more than just in the community, but rather to be a part of the community.” Newberry offers 32 majors, 29 minors and 31 areas of concen-

tration to give students a broad range of options for personalizing their program of study to their specific career/education interests for after graduation. The College provides a streamlined acceptance program for transfer students and recently launched an online degree-completion program for working adults. Founded in 1856 and affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Newberry College is a fully accredited, private college. Newberry offers an individualized undergraduate learning experience that allows students to have meaningful interactions with their professors. Students put their knowledge into practice through a focused program of internships, experiential learning opportunities and study abroad experiences. The Newberry Wolves compete in 20 NCAA Division II sports, cheerleading and dance. Elementary to high school our young people are excelling. School District of Newberry County The School District of Newberry County is the second largest employer in Newberry County. The District serves over 6,000 students in three attendance areas containing a total of 12 schools (one K-12 community school, two high schools, two middle schools, and seven elementary schools) plus a technologically advanced career center. The staff includes over 485 teachers who are supported by 350 other personnel and administrators. The District, with the recent release of the SC school and district report cards, boasts some of the best years since the inception of the accountability system. The District has received an absolute rating of Excellent two years in a row. Several of the schools are Palmetto Gold and Silver Award winners and have been for the past several years. These awards indicate notable improvements in student achievement. They are based on academic gains and closing the achievement gap. The brand “One District, One Team, and One Mission” is more than visible throughout the District—it provides direction for all we do at all levels. The district participates in AdvancED District Accreditation which advances Excellence in Education Worldwide. Not only did the district meet all expectations and responsibilities, but they also received the following recognitions;

Newberry Academy Newberry Academy is a private 3K-12 school. The education at Newberry Academy is best described as fostering a “total child experience” through a personalized approach to education. The school enjoys a 9:1 studentteacher ratio throughout the campus, so we can assure each parent that your child will be getting a great deal of attention both in the classroom and outside of it as well. This personal approach has resulted in the class of 2015 having an average SAT score of 1120 (on the 1600 scale) and is why nearly 96% of our recent graduates have been accepted to college. By having a 3K-12 campus, we have the luxury of properly aligning the entirety of the curriculum and by training our faculty to meet the high expectations of our parents and students.

Seth and Allison Yi Born and raised in Seoul, South Korea, Seth Yi’s family moved to the U.S. when he was 6 years old. Prior to his start as pastor of Newberry ARP Church in 2015, he served congregations throughout South Carolina and Louisiana. He now lives in Newberry with his wife Allison and the four of their six children—Joseph, Noah, Abigail and Elizabeth. As a pastor, he also sees the role the faith community plays in the lives of Newberry residents. “Churches and their members serve the community by providing for both physical and spiritual needs,” says Seth.

Don Russell Don is your typical executive— he is a General Manager who works 60 hours a week for a company he has been with for over 30 years, but unlike many executives—his commute to work is five minutes…or less. Lynch’s Woods Park - Lynch’s Woods, a nearby 276 acre forest

preserve, has hiking, biking and equestrian trails, sheltered picnic areas, two primitive campsites, and serves as the Gateway to the Upstate for the Palmetto Trail. The park is open 24 hours a day and admission is always free. Lynch’s Woods is an outdoor treasure, just on the edge of town. From the intersection of Main and Wilson Road, go south 1.5 miles. Look for a large sign on the left for “Lynch’s Woods Park.”

Golf - Newberry County has two 18-hole golf courses: Country

The Mid Carolina Country Club is located on the frontage road of Exit 82 on I-26 near Prosperity, SC and is open for public play on weekends and after 2 pm on weekdays. Lake Murray - This 50,000 acre popular lake is just a short drive

from Newberry and offers boating, swimming, and some of the finest large mouth and striped bass fishing in the south. Public access can be found at Sunset Road Recreational Area and Kempson’s Bridge on Hwy 395. Visit for more information.

Saluda River - Newberry County is bordered on the south by the Saluda River, which offers natural beauty. A public boat ramp for the Saluda River is located at Higgin’s Bridge just off Hwy 121, south of Silverstreet. Access is also available at the Saluda River Resort, 1283 State Road, Silverstreet.

Sumter National Forest - The Sumter National Forest covers 56,595 acres in Newberry County alone and provides complete outdoor recreational activities including: hiking, boating, fishing, hunting, equestrian trails, picnicking, bird watching, and primitive camping. Dreher Island State Park - This state park consists of three

islands in Lake Murray linked to the shore by a causeway and two bridges. Enjoy fishing, boating, hiking, and picnicking at this beautiful, must-see park. The park offers fully furnished lakeside villas as well as two lakefront camping areas. Visit the park website for more information:

Lake Greenwood - Discover Lake Greenwood’s miles of scenic shoreline, located in the southwestern corner of Newberry County. This lake is a great place to enjoy year-round boating and fishing. It’s also home to the Lake Greenwood State Recreation Area which provides camping facilities (for both tent and RV camping), playgrounds, several large picnic shelters, and an educational center, the John and Holly Self Drummond Conservation Education and Conference Center, that teaches about the history of our nation’s state parks and other conservation projects. Tennis - The Oakland Tennis Center is a City of Newberry facility that is home to City of Newberry Tennis Programs and the Newberry College Wolves Tennis Teams. The center features a pro shop, restrooms, 6 asphalt hard courts and 3 hybrid ClayTech tennis courts. All 9 courts feature an LED lighting system. The center is located at 1448 First Street. Wells Japanese Garden The Wells Japanese Garden is a Newberry landmark that was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. Designed by W. Fulmer Wells, an architecture graduate, and largely implemented by his father Henry B. Wells, Sr. the garden is an excellent example of both a historic designed and a vernacular landscape.
