Our Past & Present Present: Living in Newberry ...

Past: History of Newberry

Those who live in Newberry, SC enjoy a comfortable pace of life. Picturesque historic surroundings, scenic countryside, and abundance of entertainment options are just a few of the things Newberry has to offer.

Newberry was founded in 1789 as the county seat. Though German, English, and Scotch-Irish settlers had made this area their home since the 1740’s and 1750’s, there were no towns when the county was originally formed. After much debate the decision was made to accept John Coate’s offer of two acres for the construction of a court house near the center of the county. This is now the area bounded by Main, Caldwell, Boyce, and Nance Streets. The surrounding lands were subdivided into quarter acre lots and sold for stores and houses. This was the beginning of Newberry Court House Village.

Quality of Life in Newberry ... Newberry offers a remarkably high quality of life and it is one of the safest cities in South Carolina. In recent years, Newberry has earned recognition in both Crampton’s The 100 Best Small Towns In America and in Sweitzer & Fields’ The 50 Best Small Southern Towns. A pleasant climate, beautiful natural surroundings, ease of transportation, affordable homes, good schools, and a growing local economy are just a few of the reasons why so many people are finding Newberry, South Carolina a wonderful place to call home.

City of Newberry, South Carolina Just off Interstate 26 in the scenic Midlands of South Carolina lies the City of Newberry–one of South Carolina’s cultural and historic treasures. Newberry, founded in 1789, is a town rich in history with its antebellum mansions and tree-lined streets, and it is known for its rural beauty and small town charm. Although it is a place where the past has been carefully and beautifully preserved, it’s also a town with a vibrant present. Newberry’s thriving downtown boasts an array of unique shops and restaurants, the Newberry Opera House, the historic firehouse converted to a conference and events center, and one of the Southeast’s finest private colleges. The surrounding countryside offers diverse outdoor activities from our local vineyard, to nearby lakes, rivers, forest preserves and golf courses. Newberry is located midway between Columbia, the state capital, and Greenville, a cultural and economic hub of South Carolina, so visitors and residents can enjoy the small town pace of life, but also know that the hustle and bustle of a larger city is just a short drive away.

The City of Newberry welcomes you to stop by and stay a while! You may find that Newberry is just the place you’ve been searching for.

The City of Newberry is featured in Norman Crampton’s The 100 Best Small Towns in America.
