Expert Guest Speaker

Join us for a new monthly series where we bring in guest speakers to discuss topics important to you and on a variety of issues that will help you age independently.

Advance Planning: Wills, Trusts, Estates Understand the importance of having a complete plan to manage financial decisions, health care decisions and estate distribution in the event of incapacity. Learn what policies and legislation have changed that may impact wills or trusts previously created that now may not include all your assets. This workshop includes lunch.

Legal Services A licensed Attorney from Southern Minnesota Regional Legal Services will provide free legal consultations. Participants wishing to make an appointment with an attorney should call the Senior Law Project hotline at 651-222-4731, Monday – Friday, 9am – 3pm, and provide basic information and legal question(s) you wish to be answered. An intake worker will pass along the information to an attorney who will then contact individuals to set an appointment time. Appointments are strongly encouraged, walk-ins won’t be guaranteed time with the attorney if the schedule is full.

Scam Prevention Listen to a representative from the Better Business Bureau – Safeguarding Our Seniors division on scams targeting senior adults. This speaker will discuss various scams and the best ways to protect yourself. Attendees will also learn to how to report scams if they do happen to you, family members or friends. This workshop includes lunch.

Medications Management and You Learn from a Pharmacist important information you need to know about medication as it relates to diet, hydration, generic brands, multiple medications, complications, storage and disposal. Education Food for Thought Join in on the ‘dish. This program is geared for those looking for social engagement, intriguing conversation (with others possibly holding varying perspectives) over a common enjoyment of cuisine! We will use local restaurants as our forum to not only enjoy cerebral discussion but also celebrate the fabulous and diverse cuisine throughout the area. This is a great opportunity for those who want to make use of their Dinner Club Cards! We will propose topics, issues or questions to spark thoughtful conversation. The only cost for the program is the meal you order plus tip. Please RSVP to help ensure we have adequate seating for our group.

The Driver Improvement courses are open to the public; pre-registration is required. A MN Highway Safety & Research Center certified instructor teaches this class. Those who complete the course qualify for a 10% discount on their auto insurance premiums for three years, according to Minnesota law. First time participants must complete the initial eight hours of training and a four hour refresher class every three years to maintain the 10% discount. All classes held at Veterans Memorial Community Center.


Day Trips Please note some trips noted are planned in collaboration with other communities and may include additional pick-up sites. Where you register for the trip is where you board the bus. To depart from Inver Grove Heights, please visit IGH Park and Recreation Office to register. No refunds will be issues after the registration deadline.

A member of the fitness center staff will introduce you to the cardio and strength equipment in the fitness center, recommend classes based on your preference and answer basic questions about working out. Free for new VMCC members; $35 for 10-time pass holders and non-members.

“Joint Friendly” Classes for Aging Adults:

Silver Sneakers, Silver and Fit, Joints in the Pool, Silver Splash, Sculpt & Stretch, Zumba Gold and more are held at the Veterans Memorial Community Center and are free for members or pay the daily rate to attend.

Indoor Open Pickleball

Mon/Wed/Fri, 1:30-3:30pm, Jan 3 – May 31, (excluding: 2/24, 3/30) held at VMCC Fee: Free for VMCC members, $3/non-members per day or 10xpunch cards for $25. This is a great opportunity for beginners to advanced players to be active with pickleball indoors during the cold winter months.
