SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES Eastlink Centre has great opportunities for Naming Rights on many different components in the building. The value of Sponsorship versus purchasing of advertising, is more prominent locations for signage, and sponsorship rewards include employee discounts based on the value of the sponsorship. The other benefit is that a Sponsorship guarantees long term commitment. What does this mean? This means that it gives you an opportunity for a higher valued Sponsorship which may be amortized over the term of the sponsorship, allowing you even greater exposure. One other kind of sponsorship is our ‘EVENT’ Sponsorship. We are constantly creating new events at Eastlink Centre and we are always looking for Title Sponsors. How about a Racquetball or Basketball Tournament or maybe a Marathon named aˆer your business? Just let us know what interests you the most! These are great ways to get your name on a key component that speaks to your business goals, vision and community investment.

Our Assistant Manager, Carol Longmore has been working with the City for almost 25 years. She grew up working at The Leisure Centre. Her specialty is in aquatics and she has dedicated herself to ensuring quality programs for our community. Carol now supervises the Program and Services areas including our Aquatics Department but also Fitness & Wellness, Child & Youth Services, and the Field House Department. When The Leisure Centre re-opens, Carol will be managing that facility while continuing to oversee the Programs and Services department.

message from Char

By now, the community must realize how busy the Eastlink Centre continues to be. To keep on top, we have a dedicated team running things. Our actual department is called Aquatics & Wellness and we are responsible for Eastlink Centre, Bear Creek Pool and The Leisure Centre. We have a total of over 300 staff in our department alone. I would like to introduce a few of the Management members of our team.

Our Operations Manager is Richard Fletcher. Richard was well known at The Leisure Centre for instructing “Killer” spin classes. He is a dedicated athlete himself and committed to training and racing in numerous events including Canadian Ironman. Richard’s previous career was in the electrical & mechanical trade specializing in electric motors

• • • Dedicated management & staff with a love for what they do. • • • generator repairs. His expertise and knowledge brought him to our team. He works night and day ensuring all aspects of the Aquatics & Wellness facility operations run smoothly. Believe me, that wasn’t easy the first 18 months of dealing with a brand new facility. Good thing he is always in such good physical shape to keep up with the demands required for such a huge facility. Cheryl McKenzie is our Marketing & Events Manager and our creative genius. She has extensive background in fundraising, sponsorship development, marketing, events, branding and graphic design. Cheryl was a team of one when

4

she started with the City as the Capital Fundraiser and Marketing person for the Eastlink Centre project. She then joined seamlessly into a team of over 300 to take on all Aquatics & Wellness Marketing and Events. She oversees the continued success of sponsorship / advertising sales but also ensures each event and marketing campaign goes on without a hitch. Next on our Management team is Edlynn Hebert. Edlynn is our Finance Manager. She ensures our staff are paid, our bills are paid and anything else that is part of our financial department is handled properly. She also came with us from The Leisure Centre and we are all so lucky she did. She keeps our financial department running smoothly. Finally, we have with us Angela Redding who is our Customer Service Manager. Angela also grew up working with the City. Many of you will remember her from the Kids Place at Dave Barr. She came over to Eastlink Centre as the Child & Youth Manager and moved recently into the role of Customer Service Manager. Angela works tirelessly ensuring our customers are treated with Customer Service Excellence. She just moved into this new role in April and already has amazing new ideas on how we can serve our customers and community better. I am happy to share a little bit of our team with you. The Aquatics & Wellness department is dedicated to consistently improving our service to suit the needs of our community.

Charlene Kushner Aquatics & Wellness General Manager

• • • Eastlink Centre and the Grande Prairie & District Chamber of Commerce have partnered to bring you 20% off Memberships for all Chamber of Commerce Members and their employees. • • • Recently, the Eastlink Centre launched its ‘Group Discount Program’ which allows organizations, businesses and any community group to be eligible for a discount based on volume of prepaid annual memberships. By purchasing as part of a group, participants receive a discount of 10-20% based on the number of people in their group.

“We are thrilled to have the Chamber of Commerce on board as our largest ‘Group Partner,’ says Cheryl McKenzie, Marketing and Events Manager at Eastlink Centre, “with over 1100 members representing more than 19,000 employees, this certainly opens the door to many citizens who may not have previously been eligible for a group discount.”

Eastlink Centre’s partnership with the Chamber of Commerce will allow employers (and their staff) to be part of a larger ‘Chamber Group’, making the group discount accessible even to businesses with fewer than five employees, and ensuring that participating Chamber members receive the maximum discount of 20% regardless of how big their organization is, because their numbers are combined with those of other participating Chamber members.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for cost savings and we are excited to be able to extend our Group Discounts to be offered as a ‘Value Added’ Chamber Program.” McKenzie continues, “There are also other opportunities for businesses to further assist their employees by pre-paying their employee’s membership and offering payroll deductions or offering the membership as part of a Health and Wellness benefit program.

5

Though this isn’t necessary to qualify, the opportunities are very exciting for everyone.” The Chamber of Commerce will be promoting this new initiative to their membership as the organization’s first Local Value Added Program. “This will make a great addition to the already long list of benefits available to Chamber members,” says Shawna Miller, Chair of the Chamber’s Board of Directors.

Household Cleanse It was a windy and bitterly cold day, but in true Grande Prairie fashion you cameout in droves for our 1st Annual Household Cleanse (June 8th). You picked up your complimentary hot chocolate and faced the cold with a smile.

The Household Cleanse was our first ever outdoor flea market that filled the entire South Parking Lot. We had over 35 individual vendor selling things old and new with hundreds of people hunting for that special treasure. The mood was very upbeat and there were tons of laughs to keep us warm.

all things Eastlink Centre

Eastlink Centre has been open now for 21 months some of that time was pretty rough with contamination closures in the Aquatics Area. Well, GREAT NEWS, we have finally seen the light at the end of the tunnel. The Eastlink Centre Operations Department in conjunction with Alberta Health Services, together have resolved many of the issues of chemical balancing after a contaminations. This is evident in the fact that we have not had a major closure or required a super chlorination in over 4 months!! We have continued to exceed the high level of standards set by AHS as well as maintain open status on our tanks. We are very excited that we are now finally able to provide the product and service we always wanted to on a safe and consistent basis.

Eastlink Centre’s Own Registered Dietitian

photo: Catherine Hollingworth

With chronic disease and obesity on the rise, I am so excited to be a new member of the Eastlink Centre team and contribute to the overall wellness of the community of Grande Prairie and surrounding area! I have always had a strong personal interest in nutrition; how what we eat and drink affects us physically and emotionally. Conversely how our moods and sense of well-being can influence our eating habits. It’s time to be proactive about our health. After obtaining my BSc in Nutrition and Food Sciences from the University of Alberta, I completed a 12 month internship becoming registered with Dietitians of Canada and the College of Dietitians of Alberta. Working as both a clinical dietitian and an out-patient dietitian for 10 years emphasized how nutrition

plays a vital role both as treatment as well as prevention of many chronic diseases and overall well-being. I became increasingly interested in the preventative aspects of proper nutrition. I subsequently obtained my B.Ed, also from the University of Alberta, to enhance my ability to teach others the knowledge and abilities they would need to improve their personal nutrition and overall well-being. This can include preventing or managing a chronic disease, reaching peak performance as an athlete through optimal nutrition, ensuring adequate

As a mother of four children, I have a keen interest in nutrition requirements at different life stages, understanding that our nutrition requirements change as we age. I appreciate how difficult it can be to cook for picky little eaters and keep everyone happy ... especially with today’s busy lifestyles! Sometimes eating on the go is our only option, but it’s important to ensure we maintain our healthy eating even in those circumstances. I am a strong believer that all foods can fit into a healthy lifestyle…including chocolate :) It’s a matter of moderation and remembering to treat treats like a treat! I also have a strong passion for fitness and understand that to reach our optimum health, nutrition and fitness must go hand-inhand. Achieving balance in our lives will help us feel and be our happiest and best! - Tenille Millsap, RD

When should I place my child into private lessons? If you are finding your child is stuck in a certain level several times, private lessons can help them overcome what it is that might be holding them back. If it is a fear of water, working one-on-one with an instructor can help conquer that fear. We also have an adaptive swimming program to support the needs of those with different needs, or challenges in life. What is the difference between Adapted Swimming Lessons and Red Cross Swimming lessons? Adapted Swimming Lessons is an individualized swimming and water activity program offered to persons with physical, mental or behavioral limitations who might otherwise have difficulties in main stream swimming lessons. We can adapt the Red

www.eastlinkcentre.ca

Cross program to suit the students’ needs or focus on specific goals such as water safety, or getting active. We can provide one-onone lessons or join student in main stream lessons for support. Do the adapted swimming instructors have special training? Our instructors are certified as Water Safety Instructors from the Red Cross as well taken the Swimmers That Move workshop. We are continually learning and seeking more training to do the best we can for all of our students. We have also been working with the Canadian Red Cross on developing an Adapted

need adapted lessons?

Swimming course for instructors, Red Cross Swim Steps. What other programs are offered for my child with special needs? Currently we can offer 1-on-1 lessons, have an adapted instructor join your child in main stream lessons or organize smaller class sizes. If there is anything in particular you would like to see please do not hesitate to contact Rebecca McTavish at the Eastlink Center.

Award Winning Programs

Sandee Watson’S TAP Movement Therapy

Suzanne inspired me and planted an idea: medical professionals were suggesting that patients who found physical activity on land to be challenging, to “go to the pool”. However, there were no programs or individuals with the knowledge to instruct. In 2007, after some research and starting my certification in Aquatic Rehabilitation, I began offering Aquatic Therapy at TLC. Aquatic Therapy utilizes the properties of water, such as buoyancy, allowing exercise in water to become comfortable. With decreased stress on weight-bearing joints, individuals feel relief of muscle/ joint pain and swelling. Other properties of water help improve circulation, assist in joint range of motion, challenge core stability, balance and co-ordination.

Since 2007 TAP (Tailored Aquatic Program) Movement Therapy has provided the opportunity for children and adults with injuries and conditions such as: arthritis, fractures, joint replacements, back and neck pain, fibromyalgia, mobility and balance issues, Parkinson’s disease, M.S., stroke, C.P., along with pre and post surgeries, to restore, improve or maintain their functional fitness.

• • •

amazing things began to happen • • • As an Aquatic Movement Therapist, I design a program around the properties of water, and an individuals’ specific needs and goals. Individual assessments are completed, and then one on one sessions are tailored to the individual needs. Sessions continue until individual goals are met, or until the individual can progress to a group setting. Group sessions are designed for individuals who need continued rehabilitation or maintenance and are held in the river using the current for added challenge.

37

TAP Movement also provides the opportunity for persons with Development Disabilities to participate in the program, work on their individual goals and improve their functional fitness. This spring I was honoured to receive the Persons with Developmental Disabilities, Alberta North West Region, Community Disability Service Sector Award. This award is presented to “a Northwest service provider or individual from an agency that has introduced innovative or best practice strategies that have improved the delivery of services for adults with developmental disabilities”. TAP Movement team has expanded and the team is now made up of 6 individuals who are certified or in the process of becoming certified in Aquatic rehabilitation. If you are in the need for Aquatic Therapy, come check us out at the Eastlink Centre.

I met Susanne in 2005 at The Leisure Centre (TLC). A few years previous, Susanne had suffered from a stroke which affected her mobility. Feeling frustrated with the lack of progress in her recovery, her doctor recommended exercising at the pool. At the time, TLC offered aquatic fitness, geared to the able bodied and private swim lessons both of which she attended with disastrous results. Susanne was at the point of giving up on her doctor’s recommendation, when she observed me exercising with an older friend. She asked if I would work with her for a few weeks and I agreed. We began slowly, working on her balance, posture, mobility, and comfort in the water. Over the course of 4 weeks, amazing things began to happen. Susanne felt stronger. She gained muscle mass in her affected leg. Her fear of falling diminished. She was happy and her confidence returned.

The Muskoseepi Park Pavilion is the central administration building for the park, and also provides meeting and event space, and a cafeteria. Just outside the building, there is a pond used for winter skating and stocked for children's fishing in the summer. There is also a playground including a spray deck and a small climbing wall. The pavilion has direct access to the Muskoseepi Park trail system, and nearby areas for lawn bowling, horseshoes, a skateboard park, the Bear Creek Swimming Pool and the GP Museum.

Crystal Centre 780. 538-0334 The Crystal Centre is the “Centre of it all!” Family shows, trade shows, banquets, conferences, conventions and graduations are just a few of the special events that round out our growing annual list of activities. And don’t forget minor and industrial hockey and public and senior skating. We are proud of the distinctive variety of events showcased in the venue in the past and look forward to much more of the same in the future.
