PARK IMPROVEMENTS Lake Friendswood Park Lake Friendswood opened on February 6, 2017, surrounded by a concrete path, exercise equipment, and boardwalk, approximately one mile long. Fishing (with proper license and while exercising caution) is encouraged from both the floating piers and shore. A kayak launch is attached to one of the floating piers. The use of gas-powered engines in the park is prohibited. Swimming in Lake Friendswood is also prohibited. Lake Friendswood has become the “gem” for the public’s use, not hidden, that many people dreamed of for decades. Through a partnership with West Ranch, a pavilion and restroom building were completed in August 2018. The pavilion features 4 picnic tables, 2 barbeque pits, a large fan, electricty and is available for rent year round. Conveniently located near the pavilion is a new restroom building that features multiple stalls for both men and women. Additional benches, picnic tables, and a water fountain were recently added at intervals around the lake. For those interested in renting the pavilion, a $200 refundable deposit and a $75 rental fee for Friendswood residents ($175 non-residents) is required. The pavilion is available for rent for parties, company picnics, and family gatherings for up to 50 people. Lake Friendswood Park hours are sunrise to sunset daily. For rental inquiries, visit the Parks and Recreation website at www.friendswood.com/rentals or call 281-996-3220. 4 | CITY OF FRIENDSWOOD • 2018 - 2019

PARK IMPROVEMENTS Stevenson Park Pollinator Garden A new addition to Stevenson Park will begin construction this fall. Between the wall in the park and the basketball courts a 35’x 35’ space will be set aside for a Pollinator Garden. Pollinators are animals or insects that transfer pollen from plant to plant. The garden habitat will consist of plants, shrubs, grasses & trees that support lifecycles of bees and other insects, butterflies & birds. There will be a water feature and garden arch included in the garden. The purpose of the garden is to provide a stopping point or “waystation” for these pollinators to gather and take pollen to other areas in our community. Fewer and fewer spaces are available for pollinators because of human population growth and expansion and environmental damage to existing habitats. Ideally, residents will create pollinator spaces in their own yards and our community, as a whole, can help support these species. Following Hurricane Harvey’s damage to open greenspaces and residential areas Keep Friendswood Beautiful felt it was especially important to approve funding to begin the multistage process. Upon completion there are plans to hold events to educate the public on the importance of these gardens, the pollinators they support and how to create a garden at home. Maintenance of the garden will be done by the city of Friendswood and Keep Friendswood Beautiful in coordination with a number of local garden groups. For information on how to support our future Pollinator Garden contact Parks and Recreation at 281-996-3220.

KEEP FRIENDSWOOD BEAUTIFUL @keepfriendswoodbeautiful Keep Friendswood Beautiful is a city board made up of 20 volunteers dedicated to enhance the aesthetic appearance of Friendswood and to encourage residents to take an active role in maintaining that appearance. Awarded the Governor’s Community Achievement Award of $210,000 in 2015, Keep Friendswood Beautiful used the money to improve the 518 medians with new landscaping under the direction of the Texas Department of Transportation. The KFB directs and coordinates management and planning of projects and education of the community; recommends budget and project priorities to City Council; seeks grants for funding opportunities; makes suggestions for conserving and protecting natural resources; and performs such other duties as the City Council may reasonably request. Friendswood has won several recognitions such as Best Places to Live, Best Town for Families, Best Suburb to Retire, and Safest City in America. Keep Friendswood Beautiful, which is under the umbrella of the City of Friendswood Parks & Recreation Department, has been an affiliate of Keep Texas Beautiful since 2009. The beautification group was originally started in 1973 as the Civic Beautification Committee, later changed their name to the Community Appearance Board in 1977, and is now known as Keep Friendswood Beautiful. 2018 - 2019 • PARKS AND RECREATION | 23

KEEP FRIENDSWOOD BEAUTIFUL Adopt-A-Spot Adopt-A-Spot is a volunteer program where area volunteer groups are able to“adopt” a flower bed in one of Friendswood’s parks. This program creates opportunities for these groups to invest in the health and beauty of the community and increase the quality of life for residents and visitors. The adoptive group is responsible for planting and maintaining the bed during the spring, summer, and fall. If your group would like to adopt a bed, please contact the Parks and Recreation Department. For questions please call 281-996-3220.

Grant Incentive Program The Grant Incentive Program is a partnership between Keep Friendswood Beautiful (KFB), the City of Friendswood, and Friendswood businesses or Home Owner Associations, to initiate landscape improvement projects within the city for over all quality of life and beautification of the city. KFB supplies reimbursement for a landscape improvement project (not to exceed $2,000) and the business matches the contribution with cash or in-kind donations, such as local resources of volunteer labor, donated materials, professional services, etc. The grants will be awarded on a 50/50 basis, with a maximum KFB participation of $2,000 on any one project.

Figgy The most important member of Keep Friendswood Beautiful is Figgy, the ecofriendly squirrel. Figgy was born in 2012 and is now the face of KFB. Our furry friend attends all of the KFB educational programs and helps spread the word about the 3 R’s “Recycle, Reduce, Reuse”. If you see Figgy around the city, be sure to give a high five to show your support of the Keep Friendswood Beautiful mission.

Educational Programs This 30-45 minute presentation is to help expose students to ways to take care of Friendswood by recycling, saving water, conserving energy, keeping the air clean, reusing items, and preventing litter. The program provides a Keep Friendswood Beautiful pencil, a Figgy activity book, and an exclusive Figgy appearance. Presentations can be made to schools, scout troops, and day cares. This program can be made to fit any age. If you are interested in having a presentation please contact the Parks and Recreation Department at 281-996-3220 or email rec@friendswood.com. 2018 - 2019 • PARKS AND RECREATION | 25
